  • Introduction
    • Abstract: The essays in this volume use the methodology of gender theory in order to interrogate the category "Jewish." Gender studies has for decades critically examined the categories "male" and "female" and has created an entire body of theoretical approaches to analyze their operations,1 while the theorizing of "Jewish" is a relatively recent development in the field of Jewish studies. Thus, a group of scholars has set out to explore whether this gender studies tool kit might be deployed productively to investigate Jewish difference and Jewish coherence. Lisa Silverman and I first organized a 2010 Association for Jewish Studies (AJS) roundtable on the issue, and then together with Beth Berkowitz and Chaya Halberstam we ... Read More

  • Gender Theory, Intersectionality, and New Understandings of Jewishness
    • Abstract: I had worked for many years in gender studies and in sociology, the fields in which I had trained, when I embarked on a research project on collective memory among German Jewish refugees who fled their homeland during the Third Reich.1 This new endeavor obviously called for expertise in Jewish studies, which heretofore had occupied only a minimal position in my academic portfolio. To expand and deepen my knowledge, I started reading canonical texts and grappled with key concepts and intellectual debates. Looking back on those first years of research and writing on this new project, I recognize how my work maintained a clear yet ill- considered distinction between my efforts to immerse myself in the scholarship ... • Jewish Buddhists, Gender, and Social Scientific Perspectives
    • Abstract: In the cool, drizzling rain, I mill around outside the dining hall at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, a vipassana (insight) meditation center in Woodacre, California. The contemporary-style pagodas set in the green hillside give Spirit Rock the feel of a rustic Northern California resort infused with an Asian spirit. I am waiting to meet with Sylvia Boorstein, a leading Buddhist teacher at Spirit Rock and a committed, practicing Jew. She is currently leading a month-long silent retreat but has offered to break the silence to talk with me.When Boorstein walks out of the dining hall, I immediately recognize her warm smile and spiky grey hair from pictures. Though short in stature at maybe five-feet tall, she has a big ... Read More

  • The Challenge of Jewish Difference in Québec
    • Abstract: In May 2015, a group of gender studies and Jewish studies scholars were invited to Milwaukee to participate in a conference called "Grammars of Coherence and Difference: Jewish Studies through the Lens of Gender Studies." The goal of the conference was to explore whether gender studies methodologies might be useful for theorizing Jewishness. The conference organizers proposed the term "Jewish difference" to refer to the relationship between the constructed poles of Jew/non-Jew, in the way that "gender difference" explores the relationship between the presumed categories of "man" and "woman." Jewish difference and gender difference in these cases are predicated on the relationship between terms set as binaries ... Read More

  • The Fabric of Jewish Coherence: From Glikl of Hameln to Franz Rosenzweig's
           Grandmother
    • Abstract: At the conference "Grammars of Coherence and Difference: Jewish Studies through the Lens of Gender Studies," we interrogated the apparent naturalness of the category "Jewish," in the manner in which gender studies in the 1970s began to denaturalize male and female, and we made this parallel between gender studies and Jewish studies explicit.1 Yet at the conference and in follow-up discussions, examinations of the concept of Jewish difference have stood at the center of the project. Thus in this short essay, I argue that Jewish coherence is an equally crucial concept for theorizing Jewishness. The move that I propose within Jewish studies, from investigating the workings of difference to exploring the operations of ... • How We Become Real: The Making of Jewish and Transsexual Identities
    • Abstract: The American poet Marianne Moore said that a poem is "an imaginary garden with real toads in it."1 That is the way I understand the symbolic systems that define and sustain gender and Jewish identities, giving meaning to terms such as "Jew," "man," and "woman," and enabling us to recognize, signify, and express these identities. These symbolic systems are "imaginary gardens" with "real toads"—real people—living in them, people who depend upon the identities those symbolic systems define and sustain in order to understand themselves in relation to others. The fraught, fascinating intersection between symbolic systems and those who live in and through them has been a focus of feminist, queer, and trans-gender theory. ... • The Rabbinic Androginos as the "Sometimes Jew": Investigating a Model of
           Jewishness
    • Abstract: It felt like the same kind of policing of the community. You only trust those who are absolutely like yourself, those who have signed a pledge of allegiance to this particular identity. Is that person really Jewish, maybe they're not so Jewish. I don't know if they're really Jewish. Maybe they're self-hating. Is that person lesbian' I think maybe they had a relationship with a man. What does that say about how true their identity was'1The category "Jew," and its derivatives "Jewish," and "Jewishness," while considered by most to be straightforward and stable when used commonly, continue to undergo thorough analysis, from sociological to anthropological to historical.2 This brief thought piece sets out to explore ... • Queerly Sectarian: Jewish Difference, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Marital
           Disciplines
    • Abstract: In her essay, "Queer and Now," Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick explores the potential for queer theory to identify and deconstruct uninterrogated categories of cultural power. Modern heterosexuality, she explains, gains social authority in large measure from its apparent naturalness.1 "If we are receptive to Foucault's understanding of modern sexuality as the most intensive site of the demand for, and detection or discursive production of, the Truth of individual identity," she writes:… it seems as though this silent, normative, uninterrogated "regular" heterosexuality may not function as a sexuality at all. Think of how a culturally central concept like public/private is organized so as to preserve for heterosexuality the ... Read More

  • Gendered Language and the Construction of Jewish Identity in 2 Maccabees
    • Abstract: When thinking about Judaism and gender, it is a common misconception to assume that the interface between the two is an exclusively modern phenomenon. According to conventional wisdom, Judaism is an ancient construction steeped in the scientific and sociocultural sensibilities of people who lived long before the contemporary distinction between sex and gender came to be articulated as such. Yet as that distinction has made its way into the discipline of Jewish studies, several scholars have observed that the ancient sages who authored Judaism's Talmudic intellectual canon exhibited acute anxieties about the instability of gender binaries analogous to those detected by contemporary gender theorists in modern texts. ... • Jewish Bodies in Divine Form: Jewish Difference and Historical
           Consciousness in Medieval Kabbalah
    • Abstract: The struggle over the place of Jews in Christian society, especially as it developed between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, was a negotiation over the religious meaning and political place of the Jewish body within the body politic. This cultural tension created the space and the need for the development of a religious discourse of Jewish bodily otherness by both Jews and Christians. The first section of this article considers how kabbalistic discourses of the Jewish male body constructed in the late-thirteenth and early-fourteenth century were inversions of Christian depictions of Jewish maleness. Kabbalistic constructions of Jewish male identity are in this sense counter-theologies formulated in light of ... Read More

  • This Power Which Is Not One: Queer Temporality, Jewish Difference, and the
Concept of Religion in Mendelssohn's Jerusalem
    • Abstract: Of all the various ways to describe Jewish difference in Western modernity—cultural, ethnic, national, racial, and so on—the designation "religious" is particularly vexed. In the context of the rise of the nation-state in Europe, religion was, we are often told, a way for Jews to become just like their Protestant neighbors. In the context of Jewish immigration to the United States, framing Judaism in terms of religion, rather than race or ethnicity, was a way for Jews to benefit from white privilege by distancing themselves from black Americans and other racially and ethnically stigmatized groups.1 In both the European and the U.S. case, parsing Jewish difference in terms of "religion" proved to be the least ... • Not in My Name: Jewishness, Womanhood, and the Ethics of Identification
    • Abstract: To challenge the way things are is always difficult. Yet many people in Palestine/Israel, the diasporas, live the courage to reclaim another future. They refuse to abide by actions committed in their name, in our name, in my name.In the meantime, however, it is important to come to a better understanding of how it is exactly that many of us resist and survive in this world. Given that we are systematically constructed in ways that run contrary to our own self-identifications, given that we are fundamentally viewed as illusory—as either evil deceivers or as openly bogus—how do we find the moral integrity and real-ness which has been taken from us' When we claim "reality" what do we mean' In what sense, specifically ... • Precarious Pasts and Jewish Collective Memory: "Trapped in History" in
           2017 America
    • Abstract: People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them. The past does not exist independently of the present. An alarming wave of antisemitism kicked off 2017, leaving many American Jews longing for stability, for a sense of identitarian coherence amidst mayhem. The Anti-Defamation League documented an 86 percent increase in antisemitic incidents—including bomb threats, cemetery and synagogue desecrations, and general harassment—compared to the same period in 2016. White nationalist and neo-Nazi mobilization has become increasingly visible nationwide.1 Against this menacing backdrop, enter DC-Comics inspired Wonder Woman—the first major superhero movie directed by a woman and featuring a female lead—in June ... • Final Reflections
    • Abstract: Schver zu sein a yid (It's hard to be a Jew).1 This pithy Yiddish expression embodies the exasperation, and also humor, of centuries of Jewish identity. The struggle of being (zu sein) relates mostly to the physcial existence of a people in exile, often despised and just as often the victim of economic hardship coupled with the burden (in Hebrew, the yoke‚'ol) of a demanding tradition. It is telling that the rabbis define the mitzvoth (ritual commandments) simultaneoulsy as an object of servitude (a yoke) and a sign of freedom (in reference to the Tabets of Law they say, "do not read engraved [ḥ arut] but free [ḥ erut]").2 The humor in this phrase schver zu sein a yid is that this difficult state is not understood ...
