  • From The Editor
    • Abstract: With volume 45.2, we begin a new venue for publication that will be of great interest to the readers of La corónica and medievalists in general. The section titled "Texts and Translations" will be dedicated to short editions and translations of works that are difficult to access, but of particular interest to students of Iberian medieval literature. Our first publication in this series, "Romance Literature in Hebrew Language with an Arabic Twist: The First Story of Jacob ben El'azar's Sefer ha-meshalim, is an excellent example of the kind of works we hope to continue publishing in "Texts and Translations". As an original English rendition of the first chapter of Ben El 'azar's Book of Stories, Isabelle Levy and ... Read More

  • In Memoriam: Angus Mackay, 1939–2016
    • Abstract: Angus MacKay was a scholar of unique insights and generosity. He was also an engaging and selfless friend. His death on 29 October 2016 represents an immense loss to those who work on European medieval literature and history in general and that of the Iberian Middle Ages in particular. His absence is also one deeply felt by the many of us who knew him personally; who benefitted from his capacious intellect; and with whom he so gracefully shared his knowledge and bonhomie. Born in Lima in 1939, the child of missionary parents (originally from one of the rugged islands on the west coast of Scotland) who had followed their religious calling in rural areas of Peru, Angus' early love for Spanish history and literature ... • Embodied Authority: The Virgin, Audience, And The Body Of The Devotee In
           Marian Miracles
    • Abstract: The fate of the body of Sebastian I of Portugal (r. 1557-1578) following the battle of al-Qaṣr al-Kabīr (August 4, 1578) was a contentious point of dispute among its narrators on the Iberian Peninsula in the decades following the Portuguese defeat at the hands of the North African army of Abū Marwān ʿAbd al-Malik (r. 1576-1578). The young king's death and the difficulty and delay in recovering and then laying to rest his body in the royal mausoleum at the Hieronymite Monastery in Belém gave rise to rampant speculation about whether the king might even have survived the disastrous battle, as well as intense interest in the state of Sebastian's corpse. Such speculation was not merely idle gossip, but central to the ... Read More

  • The Redes Petristas Project: Mapping Petrista Networks Past and Present
    • Abstract: In his introduction to Luis Vicente Díaz Martín's Itinerario de Pedro I de Castilla, published in Valladolid in 1975, Luis Suárez Fernández predicted that the important archival work carried out by the young historian soon "har[ía] caer muchas de las ideas estereotipadas que acerca de este discutido personaje y de su época, todavía circulan por los libros en uso" (5). These prospects were confirmed by a steady flow of works investigating the institutions—social and political—as well as the economic and financial organization of the "infamous" Castilian king. Such a focus, even if at times narrow in scope, as subsequent generations of historians would notice (see Estow xv), had the value of providing a much-needed ... Read More

  • La Historicidad y la Historiografía Sobre Pedro I de Castilla: Crónicas
Perdidas y Memorias Construidas (Siglos XIV a XVI)
Read More

    • Abstract: The tumultuous life and violent death of Pedro I of Castile (r. 1350–1366, 1367–1369) captured the imagination of writers across Western Europe. During his life and in the years following his death, Pedro became a central figure in a wide range of historical narratives composed in Castilian, French, English, Catalan, Latin, and Arabic. These accounts present contrasting depictions of Pedro; however, as it is well known, the lasting image of the Castilian king would eventually be shaped by a chronicle written for his half-brother and bitter enemy, Enrique de Trastámara. Before his death in 1379, Enrique, better known to history as Enrique II of Castile (r. 1366–1367, 1369–1379), asked Pero López de Ayala to write the ... • Pedro I y La Propaganda Antipetrista En La Génesis y El Éxito De La
           Poesía Cancioneril Castellana, I
Read More

  • Architecture And Artistic Practices In Fourteenth Century Castile: The

    • Abstract: In 1369, after several years of armed conflict, the Castilian Civil War came to an end when the legitimate Castilian king, Pedro I, was murdered by his stepbrother, Enrique II, the first king of the Trastámara dynasty. The change in dynasty was followed by a transformation also in the Castilian nobility. After the war, major titles and gifts of land were granted to emerging secondary families, which had supported Enrique II and which were, after his victory, promoted to the highest ranks of the court. The importance of the artistic patronage carried out by Pedro I and some of his courtesans is well known. The close relationship between Castile and Granada during those years, in which innovative ideas crossed back ... Read More

  • Redes Femeninas En La Corte Castellana: María De Portugal (1313-1357)
Read More

  • "E El Señor De Galicia Era Del Linaje De Troya": El Victorial And The
           Cultural Memory Of Petrismo
    • Abstract: Gutierre Díaz de Games's El Victorial is one of the most idiosyncratic works in fifteenth-century Castilian literature. A chivalric biography recounting the life of Pero Niño, count of Buelna, Díaz de Games's creation is also a treaty on chivalry that uses its avowed subject as an extended exemplum; a rich compilation of interpolated stories with historiographical and fictional topics; and a detailed, first-hand chronicle of a military expedition. This hybridity stems in part from El Victorial's combination of the interests of its commissioner, Pero Niño, and its author, Díaz de Games (Gómez Redondo 2350; Heusch; Rodríguez Velasco), which evolved during the work's protracted composition process.1 The result is a ... • What's in a Name': Reflections on, and Echoes of, the Reign of Pedro I
           of Castile
    • Abstract: In choosing a name for an heir to the Castilian throne, a well-established medieval tradition would select the name of an honored and admired predecessor –which explains the number of Sanchos, a few Enriques and Fernandos and the multiple Alfonsos. Yet there has been only one Pedro, Pedro I of Castile, the focus of this critical cluster in La corónica. This was no accidental oversight. The circumstances of his reign, and the passions and animosities he unleashed, assured that his name and memory would not be honored by this convention, sparing future monarchs of the taint of Pedro's tumultuous reign. Not coincidentally, Pedro I of Castile has also enjoyed the dubious historical distinction of having earned two ... • Romance Literature in Hebrew Language with an Arabic Twist: The First
Story of Jacob ben El'azar's Sefer ha-meshalim
    • Abstract: Jacob ben El'azar's Sefer ha-meshalim (Book of Stories),1 was written inthe first half of the 13th century in Toledo, a place where Arabic, Hebrew and Romance literary traditions had the opportunity to intermingle, most notably in the works of Jewish authors. Ben El'azar exemplifies the figure of the Jewish author who straddled the diverse traditions of this time and space: he translated works from Arabic into Hebrew and composed original works in Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew. Further, while some Jewish authors of the period, such as Judah al-Ḥarizi, felt a close connection to the Arabic intellectual environment and largely ignored developments in Romance language practices, Ben El'azar demonstrated an awareness of the ... • Carajicomedia. Parody and Satire in Early Modern Spain, with an Edition
and Translation of the Text by Domínguez, Frank A (review)
    • Abstract: This admirable and complete study of the Carajicomedia is a magnum opus and represents years of study and work on the part of Frank Domínguez. It consists of a long introduction, a paleographic-style edition of the text with very extensive notes, followed by an appendix with a Modern Spanish version facing an English translation. The unique copy of Carajicomedia appears in the Cancionero de obras de burlas provocantes a risa (Valencia, 1519) and contains the text of the poem along with extensive glosses which burlesque those of Hernán Nuñez's (aka El Comendador Griego) learned 1499 edition of Juan de Mena's El laberinto de Fortuna (1444). It is one of the few "dirty" poems that survives from pre-counter-reformation ... Read More

Corella's Tragèdia de Caldesa, a Fifteenth-Century Spanish Tragedy of
Gender Reversal by Cocozzella, Peter (review)
    • Abstract: With his Text, Translation, and Critical Interpretation of Joan de Roís de Corella's Tragèdia de Caldesa, a Fifteenth-Century Spanish Tragedy of Gender Reversal, Peter Cocozzella offers English-speaking non-specialists access to a dramatic monologue written in Catalán from fifteenth-century Valencia. Cocozzella, in his treatment of Roís de Corella's Tragèdia de Caldesa (1458), aims to demonstrate that it possesses theatrical qualities which could have found an outlet in late-medieval performance. Moreover, he proposes that Roís de Corella's Tragèdia, a dramatic monologue that could have been simultaneously acted in pantomime, was informed by Isidoro de Sevilla's definition of tragedy, rather than Aristotle's. • Història de Jacob Xalabín / History of Yakub Çelebi: A Critical
Edition, with an Introduction, Notes, and English Translation ed. by Bayo
           Julve, Juan Carlos (review)
Read More

  • Narratives of the Islamic Conquest from Medieval Spain by Hazbun,
           Geraldine (review)
Read More

  • Filosofía de Virgilio de Córdoba. Aristotélico-averroísta del siglo
XIII by Martínez, H. Salvador (review)
Read More

Read More

    • Abstract: At almost seven hundred pages, readers of this volume have before them a presentation, description in detail and defense of the vernacular humanism fostered by Alfonso X and his court in the thirteenth century. Scholars familiar with the Latin humanism of the twelfth century "renaissance" in France and the Latinate or Florentine humanism of the fifteenth century will discover a complete exposition of the roots of "el humanismo alfonsí" and its later continuations and practitioners into the sixteenth century. And complete it is: its 1,094 footnotes, 99 pages of bibliography and thirteen pages of an onomastic index are strong affirmation that H.
