  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: With volume 44.2 our readers will see that La corónica is now publishing abstracts of our articles in print. We hope this addition will provide added convenience for our readers, and it will certainly improve our visibility online through ProjectMuse, where searchable keywords and abstracts will appear in place of a selection of text, as in previous volumes. The outstanding research and writing our contributors provide deserves the attention of audiences across disciplines, and our partnership with ProjectMuse continues to grow our readership, but we want to do everything we can to strengthen our online presence as well. Fortunately, we can rely on an editorial staff that is much more expert at using social media ... Read More

  • The Hidden Polemic in Juan Manuel’s Libro de los estados
    • Abstract: What are the stakes for being an author in late medieval Iberia? For Juan Manuel (1282-1348), whose military and administrative responsibilities rival those of the kings of his age, writing books is a pursuit that requires a strong defense. … ... Read More

  • Punning on the Mind as Çela in the Libro de buen amor
    • Abstract: The Libro de buen amor (1330/43; LBA) is fundamentally concerned with the life of the mind.1 Two of the core themes of the book are interpretation as a cognitive process and product and the capacity of reading to alter one’s psychological constitution. The LBA investigates the rhetorical power of words to corrupt and enlighten and, therefore, to influence the way human beings act. As a rhetorical text the LBA has lessons to impart and teaches primarily through comedy. One of the principal tools of the book is the pun, the most ostensible of which, buen amor, is encapsulated in the title and refers to all shades of caritas and cupiditas. Over the course of this article, I will argue that the term çela, as used in ... Read More

  • The Conniving Poor in Early Castilian Wisdom Literature
    • Abstract: The Siete Partidas is considered one of the legal works of the court of Alfonso X, and rightfully so. But it was always meant to be more. Scholars have found a variety of ways to characterize it and its purpose beyond the legal realm,1 and its commentators have noted its literary self-consciousness.2 Robert I. Burns even called it “a monument of wisdom literature” and preferred to think of each “law” as an “essay incorporating folk wisdom” (xi, xix).
Read More

Read More

  • Ramón Menéndez Pidal: The Practice and Politics of Philology in
Twentieth-Century Spain by Steven Hess (review)
    • Abstract: Hess’ Ramón Menéndez Pidal: The Practice and Politics of Philology in Twentieth-Century Spain (hereafter Practice and Politics) captures the many facets of the scholarly trajectory of one of Hispanism’s most influential figures: Ramón Menéndez Pidal. By relating political moves in Spain’s academic spheres to larger political phenomena, this book situates Menéndez Pidal’s scholarship within the context of a changing political environment, from the Spanish-American war to the Franco regime. From Hess’ latest research on Don Ramón an interesting (and previously unknown) fact emerges: from 1940-1944 the Tribunal de Responsabilidades Políticas excluded the aging scholar from all Spanish institutions except the Royal ... • Lucas Fernández: Farsas y Églogas ed. by Françoise Maurizi
           (review)
Read More

ed. by Muñoz Jiménez, María José (review)
    • Abstract: The ten chapters of this anthology are by members of the editor’s research groups, several of which began as conference papers, here brought up-to-date and combined with chapters on newer areas of research. Muñoz Jiménez begins the volume in an essay that defines the basic concept of the research program, expressed clearly in the title of the book and the essay: “Formas de coexistencia de los autores y obras en los florilegios latinos”, meaning the florilegium is here conceptualized as a space in which the compiler functions as an author who has produced a purposeful new work, creating dynamic interaction of the various extracts brought into the new circuit of meaning. The anthology as a whole presents both Latin ...

    • Abstract: Scholarship on Hernando de Talavera (1430?-1507), confessor to Isabel I, one of her chief political operatives, and first archbishop of Granada, has burgeoned since the 1492 quincentenary of the kingdom’s annexation to Castile, but he remains one of the most under-studied major figures of his era. Carmen Parrilla’s edition of two unpublished writings by Talavera is therefore a welcome addition to the very limited modern library of his vast written oeuvre.Parilla’s introduction to her edition begins with Talavera’s biography (11-32), critically evaluating modern conjectures about key details of his obscure early life, such as his birthdate and converso ancestry (12-3), as well as the still uncertain date (probably ... • Inscribing the Environment: Ecocritical Approaches to Medieval Spanish
           Literature by Connie Scarborough (review)
    • Abstract: Connie Scarborough’s study - volume thirteen in the Fundamentals of Medieval and Early Modern Culture series, edited by Albrecht Classen and Marilyn Sandidge - is more than just the first major volume of ecocriticism applied to medieval Spanish literature (that I know of). It is a rally call for scholars of medieval Hispanic literatures to follow her lead; and as a germinal study, it serves not only as an invitation to fellow scholars to contribute to and/or to challenge her assertions about and interpretations of the canonical texts she has chosen to analyze, but it also serves as an invitation for others to apply an ecocritical approach to other canonical and non-canonical works of medieval Spain. In the ... • Breve historia de la lengua española. Brief History of the Spanish
Language by David A. Pharies (review)
Read More

  • Double Diaspora in Sephardic Literature: Jewish Cultural Production Before
and After 1492 by David A. Wacks (review)
    • Abstract: Traditional historiography has considered the year 1492 - when the Catholic Monarchs signed the Edict of Expulsion - as a point of rupture dividing the experience of Sephardic Jews into two different realities. On the one hand, there is the pre-1492 Hispano-Jewish experience, both in al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms; on the other, the post-1492 Sephardic experience, in those places where the expelled Iberian Jews settled: North Africa, Western Europe, and the Ottoman Empire.David A. Wacks calls into question this understanding of the year 1492 as radically disruptive in his fascinating analysis of Jewish cultural production between the 13th and the 16th centuries. By applying the critical concept of diaspora ... Read More

  • Conversion and Narrative: Reading and Religious Authority in Medieval
           Polemic by Ryan Szpiech (review)
    • Abstract: Ryan Szpiech’s Conversion and Narrative deftly analyzes medieval conversion narratives from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries, focusing its inquiry on the Western Mediterranean in geographic, linguistic, and religio-cultural terms. The central aim of the work is an investigation of first-person stories and their place in religious apologetic and polemical discourse. Of particular importance is Szpiech’s attempt to blur or dissolve the boundaries between historiography and literary studies, between the historical artifact and the literary text. By questioning the notion that the reader must assume that a personal account of conversion “happened” as it is narrated, Szpiech directs the reader towards the texts as ... Read More

  • Ritus infidelium: Miradas interconfesionales sobre las prácticas
religiosas en la Edad Media ed. by José Martínez Gázquez, John Tolan
           (review)
Read More

  • Textual Agency: Writing Culture and Social Networks in Fifteenth-Century
Spain by Ana M. Gómez-Bravo (review)
    • Abstract: In this ambitious and meticulously documented study, Ana Gómez-Bravo asks readers to take an interpretive step back from “the book” and “the work” as units of meaning and, instead, consider the independent lives of loose papers. She observes that notwithstanding the valuable insights of the material turn in literary and cultural studies, focus on “the book” as the primary object of study has obscured one of the primary, yet volatile supports of literary and cultural production in the fifteenth century, loose papers (6). In the final analysis, however, Gómez-Bravo’s shift in focus comes back around to books as objects and books as works that not only function as archives, but also as strategies for showcasing ...
