  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: With every volume we publish, I find the need to thank all those who contribute to our pages as authors, jurors, and editors. With this volume, I have the bittersweet task of thanking two dedicated colleagues who have guided La corónica for many years, and will be stepping down in 2017: Associate Editor Emily Francomano, and Book Review Editor Mark Johnston. We have already announced our search for editors through social media, and you can read the calls for these positions in the back matter.Mark joined the editorial staff in 1994 as the editor of a new section on “Information Technology and Hispanic Studies”, and he took over as Book Review Editor in 2007. Mark will be retiring from DePaul University in 2018 ... Read More

  • In Memoriam: David Mackenzie, 1943–2016
    • Abstract: David Mackenzie passed away on 26 February 2016, in his beloved city of Santiago de Compostela where he had lived since his retirement from University College Cork in 2008. David first visited Santiago, by chance he said, in his teenage years but so thoroughly did he fall in love with the city, the Galician language and culture that he returned there practically every year of his life. He was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield (Nottinghamshire) on 8 September 1943, but it was Celtic blood that coursed through his veins: his family was of Scottish ancestry and he spent the majority of his professional life in Ireland before retiring to Galicia. In 1966, he graduated with a B.A. degree in Spanish from Oxford University and ...
           Lozana andaluza
    • Abstract: La Lozana andaluza (1528) chronicles the fictional life story of the Cordovan prostitute Lozana who, after an attempt upon her life, escapes to Rome where she earns a living as a prostitute, procuress, and purveyor of medicinal and beauty products to her clients in the flesh trade and to the city’s elite courtesans. This enigmatic character is perceived as enchantingly beautiful even though her body is marked by visible signs of mal francés, or syphilis.1 Paradoxically, Lozana functions throughout the text as a healer, treating the very disease from which she suffers. Despite her illness, she does not lack for clientele as a prostitute, attracting men from a wide range of professions including the fictionalized ... Read More

    • Abstract: Ibn Tufayl’s knowledge and pursuit of Eastern Philosophy, his use of “oriental” sources, a la Ibn Sīna, and his twelfth-century reimagining of WāqWāq Island, reveals a world of Islamic trade, travel and cross-cultural exchange which inevitably affected Hispano-Arab spatial consciousness, and led to the conception of a much broader intellectual Mediterranean space. Moreover, it reveals a world of intellectual travelers who were enchanted not by far off lands, but far off seas, at the very edges of their world, and their imaginations. As such, I argue that the imagined island of Ibn Tufayl’s text, as an antipode to the philosophical space of authoritative knowledge (civilization), is inextricably linked to a growing ... Read More

and the Arcadia Translations as Cultural Capital in Sixteenth-Century
           Spain
    • Abstract: No translator or institutional initiator of a translation can hope to control or even be aware of every condition of its production. And no agent of a translation can hope to anticipate its every consequence, the uses to which it is put, the interests served, the values it comes to convey. Nonetheless, it is these conditions and consequences that offer the most compelling reasons for discriminating among the stakes involved in translating and reading translations. In literary historiography, translations typically take second stage to original works. However, as Itamar Even-Zohar reminds us in “The Position of Translated Literature within the Literary Polysystem”, translated works often play pivotal roles in shaping ... Read More

  • Biblioteca Clásica de la Real Academia Española, vol. 2 by Libro
           de Alexandre (review)
    • Abstract: In the brief introductory pages that open his second edition of the Libro de Alexandre (hereafter Alexandre), Juan Casas Rigall imagines the poet as he considers composing a work on the Trojan War, and, finally discarding that possibility, he prefers instead to write on the life of Alexander the Great–or rather–on both topics at the same time (ix-xii). The scene provides an apt and vivid image of the sheer breadth and ambition of the Alexandre, whose foundational status and enduring influence in Castilian literature can hardly be overstated. The publication of this revised version of Casas Rigall’s excellent edition (originally published with Castalia in 2007) will, with any luck, contribute to create a wider ... Read More

  • Grial: poética y mito (siglos XII-XV) by Victoria Cirlot (review)
... • A Scholarly Edition of Andrés de Li’s Thesoro de la Passion (1494) by
           Laura Delbrugge (review)
    • Abstract: Laura Delbrugge’s new publication crowns many years of hard work on Andrés de Li with the edition of the last of the three books written by him for Pablo Hurus’s printing shop in Zaragoza. She had already produced editions of his two previous works, the Reportorio de los tiempos and the Summa de paciencia, and now adds the Thesoro de la Passion, the first printing of which was finished on 2 October 1494. Her pioneering work must be greeted as a major advance for our knowledge of a wrongly overlooked author and his troubled times, even if it is expected that further research by other scholars will complement or even call into question some of her ideas.Delbrugge’s book offers a lengthy introduction in three ... • Between Desire and Passion. Teresa de Cartagena by Kim Yonsoo (review)
    • Abstract: The words that open this volume give a good idea of its purpose: “This book aims to introduce the fifteenth-century Spanish writer Teresa de Cartagena (ca.1425-?) to a wider audience as well as to offer new interpretations of her writings” (1). It is certainly necessary to bring her life and works to the attention of all those non-Hispanist scholars who study late medieval female literature, since she is, largely and sadly, conspicuously absent in general studies exploring the territory of women’s writing in that period of European history. Teresa de Cartagena, and her works, certainly deserve this. The first chapter of the book, “Writing to survive and heal: Teresa de Cartagena’s life and works” (11-34) is a short ... Read More

    • Abstract: This collection of highly informative articles comprehensively surveys a significant and wide-ranging topic in medieval and early modern Spanish literary and cultural history. In a substantial introduction, Alberto Montaner and Eva Lara closely define and usefully nuance the essential terms and concepts needed to explore the broad field of arcane knowledge and its many-sided and enduring impact on European culture. Pointing out the distinction between magic, sorcery (hechicería), and witchcraft (brujería), the authors note the encompassing amplitude of the first term, the narrower specificity of the second and third. After tracing the etymology of magic to magus and its ethnic association with an ancient Persian ... Read More
