  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: In 2012 I was thrilled to accept the invitation to work with the MLA Forum, LLC Medieval Iberian, and the rest of the editorial staff at La corónica. What motivated me the most to accept the position was the opportunity to connect more personally with all the scholars who contribute their research and service to the journal. In addition to the annual meetings and award ceremonies, working with the authors, jurors, editors and editorial assistants has been the best part of the job. Now it's 2018, and I will be finishing my second term as Editor-in-Chief, and with the completion of volume 46, I will be stepping down. We have published a call for the position of Editor in the back matter of this volume, and readers ... Read More

  • Like a Fish Out of Water: The Paremias of Luis De Aranda'S Glosa De Moral
           Sentido (Valladolid: 1552)
The gloss as a philological strategy to establish and interpret canonical literary texts was an essential tool of scholarship promoted by Renaissance Humanists, and glosses were widely disseminated in early modern Spain for those literary texts viewed as seminal. One text which received extraordinary attention in the sixteenth century was Jorge Manrique's fifteenth century Coplas a la muerte de su padre.1 Luis de ... Read More

  • Sobre Héroes Y Monstruos: La Decoración Escultórica Del Castillo De
Vélez Blanco Y La Literatura De Su Tiempo
• The Infantes In Sevilla: The Alphonsine Rewriting of the Siete infantes de
           Lara
    • Abstract: The Estoria de España (EE), in its multiple versions, provides insight into the nature of heroic texts produced in medieval Spain and indicates how epic legends like the Siete infantes de Lara (SIL) may have been used to achieve Alfonso X's political and didactic objectives. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Ramón Menéndez Pidal and Diego Catalán, as well as the scholars who have followed their lead, today we better understand the Alphonsine historiographical workshop and the complicated web of manuscripts it produced. In 1906, Menéndez Pidal published the Primera crónica general (PCG), his edition of the EE based on manuscripts E1 and E2, texts he believed King Alfonso himself reviewed and approved.1 Nearly six ... • Abstract: The earliest surviving mention of Bernardo del Carpio, the legendary illegitimate nephew of King Alfonso II of León, is found in Lucas de Tuy's Latin chronicle, the Chronicon mundi (c. 1239).1 He is first referenced as Lucas reports Bernardo's clandestine origins in Book IV, Chapter 14 (232-35), though his own feats are not described until the following chapter of the Chronicon (235-36), when he angrily allies himself with Marsilio, Muslim King of Zaragoza, in response to Charlemagne's pending invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. The initial alliance with Marsilio to defeat the French is not altogether surprising; after all, texts such as the Chanson de Roland and Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi (Pseudo-Turpin) ...
Read More

  • Celestina según su lenguaje by Raúl Álvarez Moreno (review)
    • Abstract: Fernando de Rojas's masterpiece, Celestina, has been scrutinized from nearly every possible angle. Raúl Álvarez Moreno's monograph, Celestina según su lenguaje, adds yet another dimension of epistemological inquiry to Rojas's work. Álvarez's overarching thesis is that readers have to read and interpret Celestina on the premise of its language as it emerges from the characters' dialogue. Álvarez's title, Celestina según su lenguaje, is a reference to Marcel Bataillon's La Célestine selon Fernando de Rojas. In his monograph, Bataillon argues that Celestina has to be interpreted as a moral work that Rojas wrote to warn his readership against the deception of "falsos sirvientes / y malas mugeres". Bataillon bolsters ... Read More

• Chariots of Ladies: Francesc Eiximenis and the Court Culture of Medieval
and Early Modern Iberia by Núria Silleras-Fernández (review)
    • Abstract: The "chariots" named in the title of this fascinating book are the many iterations of Francesc Eiximenis's Llibre de les dones. First composed at the end of the fourteenth century, when it circulated in manuscript copies, the Llibre was reworked by the author as the basis for another treatise, the Scala Dei. Both the Llibre and the Scala Dei proved to be popular and were printed in the incunable period, with additional editions of the Scala Dei appearing in the sixteenth century. The Llibre was translated into Spanish and printed in the fifteenth century, and then again in the sixteenth, when it came to be known as the Carro de las donas. Silleras-Fernández holds Eiximenis's treatises and their afterlives as ... Read More
