  • Toward Religious Pluralism and Catholic Diversity: Catholic Involvement in
the 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions
    • Abstract: Atension has marked the Catholic Church's attitude towards other religions. On the one hand, the Church sees itself as a chosen depository for the message of salvation. It believes that it was given a divine mandate to baptize all in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thereby incorporating all into the community of salvation. Therefore, it is a duty to bring Jesus' message of salvation to those outside the Church. On the other hand, since the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), the Church officially acknowledges truth and goodness in other religions. Thus, the Church's evangelizing mandate and its commitment to inter-religious understanding exist in tension. From its very origins and throughout its ... Read More

  • America's Teilhard: Christ and Hope in the 1960s by Susan Kassman Sack
           (review)
    • Abstract: When French Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin died in New York City in 1955, the nearly two hundred essays he wrote between 1916 and his death became the property of his long-time secretary and archivist Jeanne Mortier. Since she had already organized an international committee to oversee their publication, Le Phénomène humaine rolled off French presses later that year. Its translation into English (The Phenomenon of Man) appeared in the U.S. in 1959, beginning the availability of Teilhard's long-suppressed work in the country that was his home during his final exile. Twelve more volumes of Teilhard's essays followed, as did volumes of his correspondence with family and friends. In America's ... Read More

  • About This Issue
    • Abstract: In an increasingly pluralistic United States, Catholics have often interacted with and cooperated with non-Christians. And while there have been many historical studies of ecumenical outreach by U.S. Catholics, there have been far fewer explorations of inter-religious collaboration. The essays assembled here offer insights into relationships with Indigenous peoples, Jews, Buddhists, and Hindus, among others. We are, as always, grateful to our contributors and peer ... Read More

  • Kindred Spirits and Sacred Bonds: Irish Catholics, Native Americans, and
the Battle Against Anglo-Protestant Imperialism, 1840–1930
    • Abstract: On a dark night in 1859, the Irish-born Father Patrick O'Reilly boarded a canoe to visit the Hupa, a Native American tribe near Hoopa, California.1 Father O'Reilly had been sent to the American West from All Hallows College, a seminary in Dublin, Ireland, that trained priests for both ministry to Irish worldwide and to combat Protestant and Anglo-Saxon influences. O'Reilly came to minister to Irish soldiers, but he was more interested in the "great chief of the neighboring tribes" who lived across the bay. His letters to All Hallows were filled with curiosity when describing his visit to the Hupa campground. While he had never met a Native American, he had been told that they were the "enemy." On his journey, an ... Read More

  • American Judaism and the Second Vatican Council: The Response of the
American Jewish Committee to Nostra Aetate
    • Abstract: In the wake of the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel, the world's Catholic bishops met at the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). Among the many discussions and hosts of documents promulgated, the bishops offered a long-awaited reflection and reaction on Judaism. After numerous versions and substantial editing, the "Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions," commonly referred to as Nostra Aetate, was issued on October 28, 1965, and became widely acknowledged as both a milestone in Catholic theology and a turning point in Jewish-Christian relations.1 The following pages examine Nostra Aetate from the perspective of American Judaism. When the primary center of Jewish ... Read More
