  • How Can Democracy and European Government Be Reconciled': Introduction
    • Abstract: The European Union is often said to suffer from a democratic deficit. Some argue that technocrats in Brussels and Frankfurt substitute their decisions for the will of this or that people democratically expressed at the ballot box, while others suggest that selfish member states stand in the way of achieving the necessary cooperation and coordination. In what follows, our ambition is to address some of the fundamental questions arising from this debate. How should one conceive of democracy in a union of quasi-sovereign states' Is it necessary to create a European "demos" (or "demoi") to have a democratic European Union, or can one rely on democratic processes in each of the member states' Should the institutional ... • Alexis De Tocqueville, The Modern Democratic Nation-State, and Its
           Competitors
    • Abstract: Scholars of the European Union (EU) have long drawn inspiration from the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville.1 It's not difficult to understand why. Tocqueville was the first thinker—"the first social scientist," as Jon Elster describes him—to provide a theory of what we would now call, the modern democratic nation-state.2 Tocqueville famously "saw in America more than America"—he envisaged the democratic genus (if not the particular American type) as Europe's future.3 Tocqueville proved, at least eventually, to be right. The modern democratic nation-state remains the only type of state that provides its members with sufficient security, material well-being, legally-protected liberties, and political representation ...
Read More

  • What future for a democratic Europe following Brexit'
    • Abstract: Jean Arthuis: Brexit offers an opportunity to Europe, as it sheds a cruel light on the institutional fragility of the European Union and on its inconsistencies. The functioning of the EU is difficult to defend in the realm of public opinion. The British political class has never stopped fueling Euroscepticism. Even the Remainers believe that the EU is at best a necessary evil. For their part, the European authorities have exhibited complacency towards the United Kingdom. In February 2016, David Cameron set his conditions: stop invoking the goal of political integration and recognize the diversity of currencies within the Union. In the face of these paradoxical demands, the President of the Council and the President ... Read More

• Crowd and nation: Character in the age of race
    • Abstract: Why still address the question of the crowd' Has something changed in its historiography' Has a new theory shaken our certainties' Far from it. Over the last few years, many good books on the subject have been published,1 but none of them has seriously challenged the consensus on the crowd and its students—the collective psychologists—the interpretations proposed over the years, the texts to be considered, the conceptual relationships between crowd and imitation, crowd and contagion, crowd and suggestion, crowd and degeneration, crowd and totalitarianisms, crowd and democracy, and the relationship between the disciplines of biology, psychology and sociology in the study of crowds. The subject has never been as ... Read More

Read More

  • Before and beyond the masses. Simmel, Benjamin, and the sociology of
           crowds
    • Abstract: German social thought in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries considered the metropolis to be a miniature model of western civilization. For thinkers such as Werner Sombart, Ferdinand Tönnies, Georg Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, and Walter Benjamin, it represented the social formation in which modernity, in its most extreme and paradoxical forms, is most clearly manifest, and is therefore best understood from a sociological point of view. Simmel (1858-1918) and Benjamin (1892-1940) both contributed to interpreting and elaborating this new form of metropolitan culture, albeit in different ways. The metropolis as a general social form of modernity has fundamental importance in their work as well as in their personal ... Read More

Read More

  • Mob, people, crowds, and masses: Mass psychology and populism
    • Abstract: People, mob, masses, crowds: these terms are used both in public opinion and in academic literature as if they were equivalent. Looking at their semantic history and use, however, their different functions in political discourse and praxis becomes clear. "Masses" are often associated with the working classes in the socialist and democratic traditions: the term refers to producers and workers, who actively participate in the economic wealth of a state and therefore claim a central role in its politics. Otherwise, masses are depicted in crowd psychology as agglomerates of persons who lose their identity, and becoming part of an organism with a will of its own. "The people" can be taken to mean "people in movement," ... Read More

  • The French and the Italians in relation to the difference principle
    • Abstract: According to John Rawls (1971), maximin is one of the fundamental principles of social justice. To define this principle, in his Theory of Justice, he considered a hypothetical state of nature – referred to as the "original position" – in which individuals must reason behind a veil of ignorance. They possess information about the relative scarcity of goods, which is, when all is said and done, the source of conflict regarding their distribution (without which there would be no principle of justice to choose), and about the "primary goods" which are essential for the implementation of any rational plan of life: socio-economic resources, basic freedoms and the social bases of self-respect. However, they are unaware ... Read More

Read More

  • And what if Tocqueville was wrong'
    • Abstract: Even a casual reader of Democracy in America knows what it's all about: Democracy, that social state in which equality reigns. Democracy is the "Providential fact" which, according to Tocqueville, has been slowly gathering steam since the appearance of Jesus Christ and has now finally overcome the old aristocratic world. America is the most democratic nation, according to Tocqueville, but it is the leader of the pack, not the exception to the rule. Everything else is just commentary. But what if Tocqueville was wrong'Maybe the Revolution is Over. People have said this before, of course, most often about the French Revolution, and for a long time they were wrong about that. But the French Revolution is the epitome of ... Read More
