  • Introduction: The Multilingualism of the Occitan-Catalan Cultural Space,
           Courtney Joseph Wells
    • Abstract: This special issue of Tenso dedicated to "The Multilingualism of the Occitan-Catalan Cultural Space" began as a session sponsored by the Société Guilhem IX at the International Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo in May 2016. While the conference session was dedicated to intercomprehension and multilingualism in areas where Occitan was used as a literary language, the present issue has the somewhat more concentrated focus of the multilingualism of the medieval Occitan-Catalan space. Since Occitan had the status of literary language in Northern France, Northern Italy, and Catalonia, in addition to the southern third of France, we have narrowed the scope of that study to the vibrant linguistic, cultural, and literary zone ...
Read More

  • But Singing Makes it So: Occitan as Poetic Language inthe French Crusade
against the Medieval Crown of Aragon
    • Abstract: It is safe to assume that the troubadour Bernart d'Auriac had already begun work on composing his pro-French and anti-Aragonese song "Nostre reys qu'es d'onor ses par" (BEdT 57,3) when King Jaume II of Mallorca was crawling facedown through a sewer pipe that ran from his palace's kitchen into the open air of Perpignan toward freedom. Jaume had become a prisoner in his own home because his older brother and feudal lord, Pere el Gran, had received information that, instead of acting as a buffer to shield Pere's Catalan lands from an impending French invasion, Jaume had betrayed Pere and had granted the invading French army safe passage through his lands in Roussillon and guaranteed entry into Catalonia.1 Hoping to ... • Poetic Language in the Multilingual Crown of Aragon
    • Abstract: Multilingualism is a well-known phenomenon in the medieval Crown of Aragon, in all its wide-ranging scope, whether regarding the languages spoken by its subjects, the multilingual usage in official documents, or the nature of literary practice.1 While many other European lands and societies were multilingual in the Middle Ages and shared several aspects within this range of linguistic practice, a number of factors, such as its geopolitical position in a borderland or its political and dynastic decisions, make this situation particularly varied, extensive, and enduring in the Crown of Aragon. Perhaps one of the most distinctive features, which stands out as a core issue when discussing multilingualism, is the ... Read More

  • Pèire Godolin/Pierre Goudouli: An Appraisal
    • Abstract: The century extending from 1550 to 1660 saw a flowering of verse in Occitan that recent scholars, for example Lafont (Anthologie) and Gardy (Histoire), have named the Occitan Baroque. Unfortunately, except for a limited number of specialists, mostly French, this material is generally unknown—unknown to scholars of le grand siècle, unknown, except as a name, to many people who work on the troubadours.Generally recognized to be the leading poet of this movement is Pèire Godolin of Toulouse (1580–1649). Escudé devotes a full-length study to him and his relations to Toulouse. Godolin is the author of a relatively vast corpus: some 400 pages in the now classic edition by Noulet (1887), which preserves the original ... Read More

  • Two Medieval Occitan Toll Registers from Tarascon by William D. Paden
           (review)
    • Abstract: In the past decade and a half, the American Occitanist William D. Paden has produced a series of publications that have put previously unpublished medieval texts contained in the manuscript collection of the Newberry Library in Chicago in the hands of scholars around the world. He published the first of these critical editions in 2003, an Occitan notarial roll from Asprières, followed by two fragments of an Old French translation of the Apocalypse in 2006, and, now, a medieval toll register from Tarascon, acquired jointly by Northwestern University and the Newberry Library. Along with his recent editions of texts written in Latin ("Bernart Amoros" and Guillelmus) and studies of ritual texts ("Before the ... Read More

  • La Langue d'oc telle qu'elle se parle. Atlas linguistique de la Provence
by Jean-Claude Bouvier et Claude Martel (review)
    • Abstract: This fourth volume on the speech varieties of Provence completes publication of the lexical material gathered for the Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de la Provence (ALP). The volume is authored by Jean-Claude Bouvier and Claude Martel (authors and fieldworkers for the three previous volumes); cartography is by Guylaine Brun-Trigaud, and the volume is illustrated with images provided by the cultural association Les Alpes de Lumière.The data presented in this volume cover the same geographical area as the first three volumes, and for the most part were elicited during the same fieldwork interviews, conducted for 170 survey points between 1960 and 1990 using the technique of bilingual elicitation. For each ... Read More

  • Les Mots d'Aliénor: Aliénor d'Aquitaine et son siècle by
           Katy Bernard (review)
    • Abstract: In its title and organization, Les Mots d'Aliénor is a bit like a children's book; Katy Bernard has intended an abécédaire of the woman we call Eleanor of Aquitaine. The subtitle of the work, "Eleanor and Her World" or "Eleanor and Her Times," is a much better description of Bernard's effort, for in Les Mots d'Aliénor the French scholar attempts a jigsaw-puzzle portrait not only of the Duchess of Aquitaine, Queen first of France and then of England, but also of the world Aliénor lived in, using, insofar as possible, contemporary texts, sometimes cited at length. In this work for the general public, Bernard succeeds fairly well; the scholarly reader will also find interesting nuggets of information.Bernard chose 198 ... Read More

  • Le Festin du troubadour: Nourriture, société et littérature en
Occitanie (1100–1500) by Wendy Pfeffer (review)
    • Abstract: Wendy Pfeffer's latest book, which is a veritable banquet, opens with a fore-matter—"À propos des illustrations," "Abréviations," and especially a most congenial "Avant-Propos" where she acknowledges an abiding love of cooking and names a host of friends and colleagues with whom she has shared memorable culinary experiences—that fittingly offers an array of light amuse-bouches before she subsequently serves up a series of far more substantial courses steeped in serious scholarly language in which the familiar je disappears and is replaced by a far more weighty editorial nous.As a first course (Part I: Le Cadre: Ch.1: "Des témoins oculaires," Ch. 2: "L'Alimentation d'un point de vue socioéconomique et régional") ... • Eliza Miruna Ghil (1943–2017)
    • Abstract: Troubadour scholar Eliza Miruna Ghil died in New Orleans on February 3, 2017. Despite not feeling well, she insisted—with typical courage and dedication—on attending a departmental meeting and teaching her Italian seminar on what was to be her last day at the University of New Orleans (UNO), where she had taught since 1984. Known to her Romanian friends and family as Miruna and to American and French colleagues as Eliza, she leaves a major legacy to troubadour scholarship in her teaching and publications.Born in Bucharest on November 26, 1943, Eliza completed with honors her studies in Romanian language and literature at the country's foremost university. She always remained in touch with her professors and in ... Read More
