  • Neither History nor Book
    • Abstract: A central paradox of the history of the book is that it is neither simply a subfield of history nor concerned only with books. To study the history of the book is to examine the codex as one among myriad textual technologies. The “book” is in this sense a placeholder for a broader concern with the materiality of text and reading. “History” too is a placeholder. At stake in contemporary accounts of the book and its history is a vision of how and what to read in the present and the future. These questions moreover occupy literary critics, anthropologists, economists, politicians, media studies scholars, and bookish students and teachers at all levels, in addition to professional historians. Its name notwithstanding ... Read More

  • Taxonomies of Knowledge: Information and Order in Medieval Manuscripts ed.
by Emily Steiner, Lynn Ransom (review)
    • Abstract: A gorgeously produced book, as is often the case with Penn Press, Taxonomies of Knowledge gathers six essays, most of which were presented at the Fifth Annual Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscripts in the Digital Age with the same title, held in 2012, while one of the essays was presented at an earlier iteration of the symposium. Dedicated to Lawrence J. Schoenberg, founder of the Schoenberg Institute of Manuscript Studies at Penn, the volume explores differing versions of the idea of classification and ordering within and of medieval manuscripts. The six essays work with manuscripts in Latin, English, French, Occitan, and German, while a very short one explores an Arabic text in its relation to Latin, and a small ... Read More

  • The Untold Story of the Talking Book by Matthew Rubery (review)
    • Abstract: The book, understood as an object, medium, or technology, has received a lot of scholarly attention. Histories of books have produced fascinating tales of forbidden books, illuminated books, and sacred books. The impact of the printing press continues to be debated. Some years ago, critics were convinced that the Internet would shorten our attention spans and they announced the death of the book. Instead, we have seen the creation of a new format for books, the e-book, as well as an explosion of book sales facilitated by Internet companies like Amazon. The audiobook is part of this new media landscape, taking its place among podcasts and music in our listening lives. But the audiobook itself is not a new ... Read More

  • Track Changes: A Literary History of Word Processing by Matthew G.
           Kirschenbaum (review)
    • Abstract: Imagine a written language consisting entirely of graphical inscriptions, or semagrams, with no spoken counterpart. Imagine that “sentences” can be composed by joining semagrams together in intricate, mandala-like configurations, and that the process of conveying a complex thought in this writing system involves drawing individual lines that participate in multiple clauses of a sentence at once. So, for instance, if I wanted to tell you that my home planet has two moons, one larger than the other, that its atmosphere consists of nitrogen, argon, and oxygen, and that almost half of its surface is covered by liquid water, I would draw a single stroke that began with the semagram for oxygen, then “slid down to become ...
• Lossyness: Material Loss in the Cloud or Digital Ekphrasis
    • Abstract: If everything that exists should become smoke, nostrils would still distinguish each thingIn a Digital Humanities Quarterly article from 2013, Cecilia Lindhé proposes “digital ekphrasis” as a strategy for literary critics to reinscribe the body in their discussions of digital literature and art. Her philological method consistently returns to the digital’s digit, the artist’s finger, or, as she writes, quoting F. T. Marinetti, “the visual sense born in the fingertips” (Lindhé 1). In a recuperative act, Lindhé attempts to excavate the ancient concept of ekphrasis from its current understanding and from the hegemony of print culture. She understands digital ekphrasis broadly to describe a process of vivid ... Read More

• The Materiality of Medieval Parchment: A Response to “The Animal
           Turn”
    • Abstract: To “brush history against the grain” means to pay as much heed to the material of the manuscript itself as to the writing; to see the remnants of follicles on a parchment’s hair side as an alternate punctus, a palimpsestic reminder of what the letters of human reason obscure.Medieval manuscripts are undergoing a reappraisal by medievalists who investigate texts about animals and the animal body.1 These texts, it has been argued, engage uniquely with the materiality of the skins of animals upon which they were written.2 By foregrounding non-human species, academics are challenging traditional humanist discourses of the past by declaring a pivot to a new era of post-humanism (Wolfe; Stanbury). Identified as “the ... Read More

• Sampling and Remixing in Recent Latin American Narrative
    • Abstract: Juan de los muertos (2011), Cuba’s self-proclaimed first horror film, gained international acclaim when it won Spain’s Goya award for best Spanish-language foreign film on February 17, 2013. The film is an able zombie movie improved by its Cuban context, with survivors wrestling with new reasons to go to Miami as they weigh the abandonment of their country that the trip has always signified. On the less serious side, the film plays with the representation of Cuban media, with official television reports referring to the zombies as political dissidents trained by the CIA as part of a US imperialist plot. The protagonist is Juan, a forty-something slacker on the outs with a beloved daughter, who finds a business ... Read More
