  • La Escritura Decimonónica Cubana Como Reflejo Del Complejo De
           Blanqueamiento
Read More

  • Sexo En Las Antillas: Diáspora, Tragedia y Subversión Un Estudio
Comparado Desde El Punto De Vista De La Intersección De Las Opresiones
Read More

  • Adapting to Climate Change in the Caribbean: Existential Threat or
           Development Crossroads'
    • Abstract: The impending threats posed by a changing global climate system has now become one of the key and defining features of the Caribbean development agenda. There is mounting evidence to suggest that even drastic reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions now will be insufficient to avoid some of the dangerous projected impacts of future climate change (Ramanathan and Feng 2008; IPCC 2014). The Caribbean region in particular, is recognized for the disproportionate risk it faces from climate-induced changes.1The generally small geographic size of most Caribbean states, high concentration of settlements and resources along low-lying coastal strips, narrow natural resource base, and overwhelming reliance on a limited ... • Prospects and Challenges for Civil Society and Climate Change Engagement
in the Caribbean: The Case of Trinidad and Tobago
    • Abstract: Global warming threatens the very existence of the human species. "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level" (IPCC 2007:30). An Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report (2014) indicated that climate change has had adverse impacts on "hydrological systems," "water resources," and some crop yields. It has also changed natural ecosystems, caused the extinction of terrestrial, freshwater and marine species, led to health problems and death and exacerbated extreme weather conditions. Notably, "[c]limate-related hazards exacerbate other ... Read More

  • Análisis De La Optimización De La Actividad Turística: El
           Caso De Cuba
Read More

History and Politics of Controlling Creativity by Vibert C. Cambridge,
and: What She Go Do. Women in Afro-Trinidadian Music by Hope Munro
           (review)
    • Abstract: En este ensayo, reviso críticamente tres publicaciones, Geographies of Cubanidad. Place, Race, and Musical Performance in Contemporary Cuba (Bodenheimer 2015), Musical Life in Guyana. History and Politics of Controlling Creativity (Cambridge 2015) y What She Go Do. Read More

  • Queering Black Atlantic Religions: Transcorporeality in Candomblé,
Santería and Vudú by Roberto Strongman (review)
Read More

  • Passages and Afterworlds: Anthropological Perspectives on Death in the
Caribbean ed. by Maarit Forde and Yanique Hume (review)
    • Abstract: Death is not just a biological matter; it is also a social issue. In this context, a deceased person is an object of study that serves to prove the existence of symbolic and ideological values, as well as a "blank canvas" where classes, historical, and sociocultural elements are manifested (Lugo Ramírez 2016:29-30). In the symbolic and biological spheres, there is a constant struggle to preserve social and physical life. At the symbolic level, moments of bereavement become a battlefield that challenges social death, collective omission, and marginalization.Recently, in an informal conversation with other colleagues from the Department of Languages, Literature, and Culture at University at Albany–SUNY, I said: "me ... • Fernando Ortiz on Music: Selected Writings of Afro-Cuban Culture by Robin
           D. Moore (review)
Read More

  • El sistema colonial develado by Jean Louis Vastey (review)
Read More

  • Crónicas de un confinamiento abierto by Rubén Dávila
           Santiago (review)
Read More

  • The Borders of Dominicanidad: Race, Nation, and Archives of Contradiction
           by Lorgia García-Peña (review)
    • Abstract: The book The Borders of Dominicanidad: Race, Nation and Archives of Contradiction, by Lorgia García-Peña, presents an in-depth analysis about the contradictions in official narratives and history of 'Dominicanidad', the racialized policing of borders of the nation and the alter-native diasporic voices who are reclaiming a different embodied memory of Blackness. As stated by the author The Borders of Dominicanidad isconcerned with the ways in which dictions are projected and performed on racialized bodies to sustain exclusionary borders of the nation … official stories are influential in bordering the nation and shaping national identity…[such] stories and histories upheld by nations and their dominant archive ... • Urban Space as Heritage in Late Colonial Cuba: Classicism and Dissonance
on the Plaza de Armas of Havana 1754-1828 by Paul B. Niell (review)
Read More
