• Raymond Dalmau: From Harlem a Puerto Rico by Raymond Dalmau and Hiram
• Nexus of Rivalry: Nicaragua’s Grand Canal and Inter-American
           Relations
    • Abstract: In June 2013, Nicaragua’s National Assembly approved a canal proposal made by China’s Hong Kong Nicaragua Development Group (HKND). Taking a hasty step forward in a centuries-long dream of a transoceanic canal through Nicaragua, the National Assembly acted without a feasibility study and with less than a week to consider the merits of the proposal (Zuckerman 2013). Given that HKND’s concession is the most recent of nearly two dozen proposals to build a transoceanic canal across Nicaragua, why should this venture receive much scrutiny' (Johnson 2014).HKND’s proposal for a transoceanic canal proved to be only one strand of a larger skein that has deeper ramifications for the hemisphere and the larger world. As this ... Read More

  • A Cultural History of Underdevelopment by John Patrick Leary (review)
Read More

  • “News of ‘Crazy’ Women Demanding Freedom”: Dominican Feminist
           Activism in a Post-Dictatorial State (1961–1990)
    • Abstract: In the late 1970s a feminist movement in the Dominican Republic began consolidating around a loose set of goals and objectives. It was comprised of multiple diverse groups, some with deeper roots than others. However, the movement drew on the legacies of the mid 1960s anti-imperial and anti-occupation struggles, as well as the nearly half century of authoritarian rule that had imprinted an intense form of paternalism upon the nation’s political structure. The movement was at once intensely local, centered on the imperatives of a small island-nation transitioning out of a difficult and extended period of authoritarian rule, and impressively global given the insularity such dictatorial leadership had sought to impose ...
• Saamaka Dreaming by Richard Price and Sally Price (review)
• Liming and Ole Talk: Foundations for and Characteristics of a Culturally
           Relevant Caribbean Methodology
    • Abstract: The Caribbean is a diverse region in which a range of settlement and migratory experiences gave rise to creole, hybrid cultures. In this paper we argue that Caribbean scholarship would benefit from using the region’s wealth of cultural practices to inform research strategies, and from exploring and embracing Caribbean ways of constructing knowledge. Specifically, we discuss the potential of Liming and Ole Talk, traditionally regarded as a form of leisure and interaction characteristic of the Caribbean, to serve as the foundation for developing a culturally relevant, qualitative research methodology. Similar practices to Liming and Ole Talk can be found throughout the Caribbean region cutting across gender, class ... Read More

  • He sido el incomprendido: la historia de Bobby Capó by Víctor
           Federico Torres (review)
Read More
