    • Abstract: “For what dream, or what lure, is my writing a metaphor?”Plantea el geógrafo Derek Gregory que la historia y la geografía están mutuamente implicadas. • Imagining Resistance: Organizing the Puerto Rican Southern Agricultural
           Strike of 1905
    • Abstract: As the roosters announced the beginning of a new dawn in the mountains of Yauco, laborers from sugarcane fields started preparing for their daily obligations before the first rays of sun would hit the fields. Still tired from the previous day’s labor, they headed towards their workplace as the darkness of night slowly faded away. Most women stayed behind doing domestic labor, such as taking care of small children, doing house chores, and preparing food for their husbands.1 Other families worked together in the sugarcane fields. After ten, eleven or twelve hours of harsh work under the blistering sun, laborers headed back to their humble huts made out of wood and straw. Often men would bathe, shave, and eat dinner ... • Still Lonely After All These Years?: Contemporary Development in the
           ‘Three Guianas’
    • Abstract: NB: This map represents the internationally accepted borders of the Guianas; it does not show those which are contested by Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela. The territories of Guyana (formerly British Guiana), Suriname (formerly also known in English as Dutch Guiana) and French Guiana represent a uniquely challenging and interesting comparative case study of development. Situated on the north-eastern coast of the South American mainland, the ‘Three Guianas’ occupy a distinctive position in the region, the hemisphere and the broader global political economy. They are similar in many ways: from their physical geography, to the complex social, economic and ecological challenges that they face. However, there exists ... Read More

Read More

  • On Political Intolerance and Cuba’s Future: A Spanish Caribbean
           Approach
    • Abstract: Pobre Cuba, tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de los EEUU.Adaptation of a phrase by General Porfirio Díaz.The Question Where is Cuba Going? has been frequently asked, since Raúl Castro took over Cuba’s government from his brother Fidel, in 2006, and started implementing reforms. Even at diaspora forums, such as the 2012 ASCE2 Conference, the issue was raised. However, such question may elicit several contradictory answers. For, the current environment of political intolerance3 that has traditionally plagued Cuban history, prevents parties in discordance from conducting fruitful negotiations, and arriving to efficient solutions. And we don’t see any improvements until such situation changes. The relationship between ... Read More

  • The Formation of a Free Non-white Elite in Paramaribo, 1800-1863
    • Abstract: Slavery existed in most Caribbean countries in the period from the 16th century to the mid nineteenth century. In the second half of the seventeenth century, British colonists brought the first African slaves to Suriname from places such as Barbados. Slavery existed in Suriname (which came under Dutch rule in 1667)1 until Emancipation Day on 1 July 1863. Up until the start of the seventeenth century, trade in black slaves was almost entirely in Portuguese hands. Dutch participation in the slave trade, which started in the period between 1637 and 1641, began when the Dutch West India Company took over Portuguese slave factories in Africa and began shipping slaves to Dutch Brazil (1637-1654). From 1654, the Dutch ... Read More

Read More

  • In Memoriam Sidney Mintz (1922-2015) Trabajo, Cultura, Historia… Y
           Dulzura
    • Abstract: Foto cortesía de Johns Hopkins University. Read More

  • Pariedeau Adolphus Mars, Professor Emeritus of Political Science (B. April
           23, 1941 – D. May 12, 2016)
    • Abstract: Professor Emeritus of Wayne State University, Dr. Pariedeau Mars, known to his friends and colleagues as “Perry” was murdered in his home by young people on May 12, 2016 in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, the land of his birth. After retiring from his sojourn at Wayne State University in the USA where he taught numerous courses in Caribbean and World Politics, and Africana Studies, he returned home to continue to serve in a country he loved and had written prodigiously about. In retirement he continued to write and to paint, one of his hobbies. Unfortunately he was cut down before he could offer other iterations, in print and activism on a long and distinguished career. It appears now that in Mars’ country of ... Read More

• Island at War. Puerto Rico in the Crucible of the Second World War ed. by
Jorge Rodríguez Beruff and José L. Bolívar Fresneda (review)
    • Abstract: The fear of a war conflict reaching the shores of the Caribbean, especially in Puerto Rico, became an imminent threat on the eve of the Second World War when hundreds of commercial ships and vessels were sunk by Nazi submarines in the region. The period just before the war reached its peak turmoil helped reshape perceptions about the geostrategic role that the island and the region played in the military defense of the allied forces interests in the Western hemisphere.Island at War is a book that helps to fill the gap in Caribbean historical and social sciences studies about this era and its impacts on our contemporary world. Its ten essays are not organized by any particular logic. Four of the essays are written ... Read More

  • Afro-Cuban Costumbrismo: From Plantation to the Slums by Rafael Ocasio
           (review)
    • Abstract: The book’s front cover, a reproduction of the nineteenth-century French painter and engraver Frédéric Mialhe’s Fiesta de reyes, gets it right. By that I mean—and this becomes incandescently clear on finishing reading Rafael Ocasio’s 2012 study, Afro-Cuban Costumbrismo: From Plantation to the Slums, his fourth book—when you consider that the cover designer chose not to include Mialhe’s engraving in its entirety. Instead, the cover centers on two dancing barefoot ngangas (healers, holy men), their bodies clothed in ceremonial African garb, one looking face down and shaking a lavish peacock headdress, the other staring straight at you and donning a horned crown of fiery red plumes; yet both (along with the bongo ... • Caribbean Issues in the Indian Diaspora ed. by Kumar Mahabir (review)
    • Abstract: An Indo-Trinidadian scholar of West Indian topics and the diasporic phenomenon, Kumar Mahabir, has collected a manifold of provocative essays in his most recent book, Caribbean Issues in the Indian Diaspora. Said papers resulted from the proceedings of the conferences held at St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad in 2011. The book is very aptly divided into four sections and adequately subtitled according to their converging themes: Emotions in Migration, Assimilation, Plurality of Identities and Social Adaptations and Reproduction. A total of fifteen essays comprise the bulk of the book. Each essay attempts to fill the gaps of historical value and thus provide answers to what ... Read More

  • Listening in Detail: Performances of Cuban Music by Alexandra T.
           Vázquez (review)
    • Abstract: Opening with the question “what do musicians sound like?” (12), Alexandra Vázquez’s book Listening in Detail is itself a literary performance. At times using prose-like sentences, Vázquez relates the intimate experiences by which she gives meaning to music. Using a handful of recorded performances by Cuban musicians for analysis, she unravels unique particulars of their sounds and life histories, which in turn offers an innovative method towards audiovisual observation.Vázquez builds upon Naomi Schor’s Reading in Detail (1987) in which Schor traces “the detail” from a theological concept to a post modern aesthetic category. Vázquez insists that the elaborated approach is not meant to translate Schor’s work on ... Read More

  • In the Eye of All Trade: Bermuda, Bermudians, and the Maritime Atlantic
World, 1680-1783 by Michael J. Jarvis (review)
    • Abstract: Jarvis’ In the Eye of All trade: Bermuda, Bermudians, and the Maritime Atlantic World, 1680-1783 aims to present Bermuda’s unique history from a distinctly maritime perspective, and in so doing stress the importance of Bermuda’s role in the emerging international relations of the early colonial Atlantic. Jarvis not only succeeds in presenting a compelling chronological history of Bermuda and Bermudians, but also relocates the island physically and ideologically at the heart of Colonial and Atlantic Studies.Jarvis describes his book as “a maritime social history” (p. 6) located at the intersection of Atlantic studies, local and maritime history. It contributes to an increasing body of historical scholarship based on ... Read More

  • Sounding the Break African American and Caribbean Routes of World
           Literature by Jason Frydman (review)
    • Abstract: Jason Frydman’s Sounding the Break African American and Caribbean Routes of World Literature is a fresh intervention in the often absolutist Eurocentric genealogy of world literature grafted on the classical periods in Greece and Rome. He questions absence of pre-Greco-Roman civilizations of Africa from which these classical Greco-Roman civilizations, were offshoots. Citing the arguments of African diaspora philosophers such as Samuel R. Delany, W.E.B. Du Bois, among others, Frydman advances an alternative reading of the evolution, growth and spread of world literature from palimpsestic, rhizomatic, and symbiotic perspectives. For Delany, Frydman surmises, the development and use of scriptural letters as a popular ... Read More
