  • Being Mala Mala: Documentary Film and the Cultural Politics Of Puerto
           Rican Drag and Trans Identities
    • Abstract: The feature-length documentary Mala Mala (2014) presents empowering perspectives on the lives of drag performers and transgender and transsexual persons in Puerto Rico, featuring visually appealing, musically enhanced, and deftly edited scenes showcasing nine individuals (April Carrión, Samantha Close, Ivana Fred, Queen Bee Ho', Paxx Caraballo Moll, Alberic Prados, Denise "Sandy" Rivera, Soraya Santiago Solla, and Sophia Voines) plus an additional cast of friends and colleagues.1 Filmed between 2012 and 2013, the pioneering bilingual film directed by Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles secured the support of leading queer film producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler from Killer Films, who signed on as executive ...
Read More

Read More

  • Especialización económica, esclavitud y regionalización del
           espacio cubano, 1789-1862
• Wilderness and Marginality of a Cuban Intellectual in Pedro Juan
Gutiérrez's Trilogía Sucia De La Habana (1998)
    • Abstract: The loss of the Soviet aid after the fall of the Berlin Wall since 1989 virtually paralyzed the Cuban economy and led to a massive migration. The island experienced the most severe post-revolution crisis, with significant effects on the sustainability and legitimacy of the socialist "paradigm" still smoldering today: shortages of basic products, proliferation of preventable illnesses, increased poverty and marginalization, a significant drop in employment opportunities, and a bigger presence of criminality and corruption after the dollarization of the economy. In those dramatic circumstances, the Cuban government adopted a strategy of survival known as El Período Especial (The Special Period) to perpetuate itself ... Read More

Read More

When Mr. Phillips checked the ticket number against the Pauper Register, he found that the ticket belonged to Sarah Lester and not Ellen Edwards. Three days later, on the 30th, a woman claiming to be Sarah Lester arrived at the Acting Inspector's office demanding relief payment of 4 shillings for two weeks. On checking the Pauper Register, Mr. Phillips found that Sarah Lester had been sent to the Corporation Poor House two years earlier, in May 1930. Mr. Phillips then called the Master of the Corporation Poor House in Kingston who informed him that Sarah ... Read More

Read More

  • Empire of Neglect: The West Indies in the Wake of British Liberalism by
           Christopher Taylor (review)
    • Abstract: Economic historians, such as myself, are often struck by the combination of moral bankruptcy with modern market sophistication found among seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British Caribbean planters and merchants. For those interested in managerial and financial developments in the New World, the British settlers proved to be quintessential capitalists, whose economic pursuits spurred the development of long-distance credit, insurance, and business practices that made the Atlantic World an unparalleled epicenter of international trade. The sugar and slave trades both supported and fueled critical institutional developments that mitigated investor risk and maximized investor return. Further, the hyper-capitalist ... Read More

(1898-1921) by Gerardo
           A. Hernández Aponte (review)
Read More

  • Rihanna: Barbados World-Gurl in Global Popular Culture ed. by Hilary McD.
Beckles and Heather D. Russell (review)
    • Abstract: Rihanna is an immensely popular international recording artist, having sold more than 30 million albums and 120 million singles worldwide. Despite her global appeal, she remains connected to her Bajan roots as a cultural youth ambassador for Barbados and through her public persona as an artist, frequently referencing her Caribbean home in interviews. It is this seemingly contradictory local/global emplacement that Hilary McD. Beckles and Heather D. Russell strive to unpack in their edited volume Rihanna: Barbados World-Gurl in Global Popular Culture, with multidisciplinary analysis of Rihanna's music, videos, interviews, and public persona within Caribbean, Barbadian, and international contexts. With the volume ... Read More

  • Haïti: Changer le cours de l'histoire by Watson R. Denis (review)
    • Abstract: Watson R. Denis's Haïti: Changer le cours de l'histoire is the reproduction of a speech the author gave in 2013 celebrating the 90th anniversary of the creation of the Société haïtienne d'Histoire, de Géographie et de Géologie (SHHGG), one of Haiti's oldest intellectual societies. In this slim volume, Denis, a historian who specializes in Haitian social thought, revisits the privileged mode of historical intervention in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: the public lecture. The form and the tenor of Denis's speech evokes the work of Haiti's foremost public intellectuals, such as Jean Price-Mars (whose oeuvre consists primarily of public lectures later transcribed and reproduced in newspapers, specialized ... • Puerto Rican Labor History, 1898-1934: Revolutionary Ideals and Reformist
           Politics by Carlos Sanabria (review)
    • Abstract: In the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, some aging labor leaders that had set the foundations for Puerto Rico's organized labor movement in the early twentieth century began writing their historical narratives. Their books—including Santiago Iglesias Pantín's Luchas emancipadoras and Rafael Alonso Torres' Cuarenta años de lucha proletaria—became foundational texts for the study of those that had been left out of national myths and grand narratives: the working classes. Beginning in the 1970s, a group of young scholars affiliated to the University of Puerto Rico, most of whom had been educated in Europe and the United States, began engaging in new modes of analysis related to what was then known as New History. ... • Welcome to Fairyland: Queer Miami before 1940 by Julio Capó Jr.
           (review)
    • Abstract: Welcome to Fairyland is an engrossing, well-written book that helps to expand our understanding of the history of Miami as a circum-Caribbean city, highlighting the experience of queer persons and American and Caribbean LGBTQ social formations and practices, particularly "the complex ways queer women and men negotiated their own space, role, and understanding of themselves in this budding international city from the 1890s to 1940" (4). The book is notable in its use of "queer as an analytic tool" (4) and in its transnational approach to queer history, emphasizing the profound inter-Caribbean origins of Miami, including its early links with Cuba and the significant labor force that was recruited in the early ... • Red International and Black Caribbean: Communists in New York City, Mexico
and the West Indies, 1919-1939 by Margaret Steven (review)
    • Abstract: In his 1998 ground-breaking book, The Cry Was Unity: Communists and African Americans, 1917-1936, Mark Solomon opened the way to a new historiographical trend, pointing out communist internationalism's outstanding role in the struggle for African American racial equality and social justice. Although not an altogether new subject, the work offered an innovative look at the black-and-red phenomenon, corroborated by the voluminous documentation of the Comintern archives in Moscow. Since then, a great number of publications have added a variety of angles and approaches to the topic, from ideological analysis and literature to gender (i.e. Cedric J. Robinson, William J. Maxwell, Carole Boyce Davis). Most recently, the ... Read More

  • Freedom and Resistance: A Social History of Black Loyalists in the Bahamas
           by Christopher Curry (review)
    • Abstract: Curry creates a remarkable trail from the United States of America to the Bahamas during and after the Revolutionary War. He states, the pre-Loyalist relations between enslaved blacks and others, "[t]hese salient features of pre-Loyalist society would be indelibly altered with the arrival of black refugees from British-occupied ports at the end of the Revolutionary War" (Curry, 2017:55).This review will focus on the years and experiences in the Bahamas, so as to try to provide a deeper analysis of how Bahamians and the Bahamas have come to where they are today. On page 80 Curry begins an analysis of the laws and how they with intentional affect 'served to establish a method of controlling the free blacks and ... Read More

  • Pieces of Eight: More Archaeology of Piracy ed. by Charles R. Ewen and
           Skowronek K. Russell (review)
    • Abstract: Ewen and Skowronek's Pieces of Eight: More Archaeology of Piracy presents an eclectic mix of archaeological and theoretical work seeking to answer the central question of whether it is possible to determine piratical behaviour from recoverable artefacts. The edited collection comes by way of popular demand ten years after Ewen's first edited volume X Marks the Spot: The Archaeology of Piracy and brings together well-documented scholarship covering piratical patterns of behaviour at sea, on land and in the popular imagination. The contributors cover some of the most popular pirate figures including Blackbeard, Kidd, Black Bart and Morgan in some of the most notorious pirate bases such as Madagascar's St. Marie ... • Abstract: Saying it wants to update several colonial era statutes, Guyana's government announced plans to remove mandatory fines and jail terms for people attempting suicide, others who practice Voodoo, Obeah or witchcraft as well as charges relating to roguery and vagabondage from local law books among others.Guyana's Attorney General Basil William said these statutes dating back to British colonialism are no longer relevant today and will be largely scrubbed from the books as part of an exercise to modernize legislation and remove old, lightly enforced or abandoned clauses still available to police and the courts system.Others on the chopping block include those relating to criminal libel and defamation as well as anyone ...
