  • Introduction: JSL Silver Anniversary Issue
    • Abstract: This issue of Journal of Slavic Linguistics celebrates its Silver Anniversary. Yes, though you may not have noticed (time flies when you are having fun), JSL has now been appearing uninterrupted for 25 years. When it gets down to it, for an academic journal the cliché is truth—survival is success. And for a new journal to have survived for the past 25 years is no small feat. The time of JSL's existence since volume 1, issue 1, in 1993 has spanned many changes, including that from a fairly pre-digital age to our hyper-digital one (here I would point out that early on one article by a respected Slavist was submitted in handwritten form), as well as the transition from the academic (and Slavistic) structures of the ... • Slavic Corpus and Computational Linguistics
    • Abstract: After all, language does look different if you look at a lot of it at once. The Slavic languages provide a fertile ground for corpus-based and computational investigations. For one, the Slavic languages combined count more than 315 million speakers (Sussex and Cubberley 2006), who have produced and continue to produce massive amounts of data on a daily basis. The Slavic languages also display peculiar typological features, which make them more challenging from a computational perspective in comparison to other commonly studied languages of the Indo-European family. For example, due to the richness of their morphology, Slavic languages exhibit a relatively extensive freedom in word order in comparison to the Germanic ... Read More

  • Slavic Generative Syntax
    • Abstract: This article offers a survey of the major research areas in Slavic generative syntax since the inception of the Journal of Slavic Linguistics 25 years ago. Given the number of languages concerned, the range of phenomena studied, and the diversity of approaches, the quantity of relevant publications is simply overwhelming. I must therefore be highly selective, both in identifying significant problems and in describing important work on those problems. I apologize in advance to those whose scholarship does not find its way into this short survey, which of necessity reflects my personal perceptions about what the field has accomplished and where it is headed. Since my view is that the best measure of our success, as ... Read More

  • Construction Grammar in the Service of Slavic Linguistics, and Vice Versa
    • Abstract: A few decades ago, some of us started making forays into Slavic material for testing the viability of construction grammar in dealing with grammatical phenomena and categories not encountered in English. We were motivated by the obvious promise of a theoretical framework which, though developed on the basis of English, openly welcomed the prospect of broadening its empirical scope and theoretical impact to other, typologically different, languages. But one also kept running up against a rather discouraging view of the time, held in the non-constructional theoretical camps (then clearly the majority) within the world of linguistic theory, namely, that Slavic linguistics has its own and very different traditions ... • The Mental Lexicon of L2 Learners of Russian: Phonology and Morphology in
           Lexical Storage and Access
    • Abstract: How do native speakers (NSs) and adult learners of Russian as a second language (L2) recognize Russian words' How do they map sound forms to meanings when they hear a word' How do they tell one word from the other, as in стол 'table' /stol/—столь 'so' /stolj/, брат 'brother' /brat/—брать '(to) take' /bratj/, or говорит '(s/he) speaks' /gavarjit/—говорить '(to) speak' /gavarjitj/'1 Conversely, how do they determine that two forms of a word that have little phonological resemblance, in fact, refer to the same lexical unit, as in ищем '(we) seek' /iščim/—искать '(to) seek' /iskatj/' Furthermore, how do speakers recognize the noun бумаг 'of papers' as the genitive plural of бумага 'paper'' Do listeners decompose ... • Slavic Dialectology: A Survey of Research since 1989
    • Abstract: In the first 20 years of the Journal of Slavic Linguistics (JSL) only 6 papers (excluding book reviews) out of ca. 240, or 2.5%, contain the word "dialect" in the title (JSL Editors 2012). This statistic perhaps says more about the North American center of gravity of JSL, with its focus on Slavic synchronic issues and standard languages, than the dynamism of research on dialectology, which because of its source in in situ variation, is conducted primarily in Europe. Following the received view, the bulk of descriptive work tends to be done by scholars working for institutions charged with cataloging language variation associated with the titular language, while non-Slavic scholars' work tends to focus on ... • The State of the Art of First Language Acquisition Research on Slavic
           Languages
    • Abstract: The last two decades have seen a large body of work on the first language (L1) acquisition of a variety of Slavic languages. The most investigated languages from the perspective of acquisition are Russian, Polish, and Serbian/Croatian; work has also been done on the acquisition of Bulgarian, Czech, Ukrainian, and Slovenian, among other languages. The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of the field of L1 acquisition of Slavic, with a focus on those areas in which the most work has been done: namely, nominal inflection, referring expressions, the verbal domain, and word order (with a brief mention of other topics, including the acquisition of phonology).Slavic languages have much to contribute to these ... • Cognitive Linguistics: A Neat Theory for Messy Data
    • Abstract: Roman Jakobson once stated that "the true difference between languages is not in what may or may not be expressed but in what must or must not be conveyed by the speakers" (Jakobson 1959/1971: 492). In other words, while it is possible to express the things that human beings want to communicate in all languages, languages differ widely in the categories that they require their speakers to pay consistent attention to. For example, speakers of Slavic languages face multiple grammatical requirements to mark gender, whereas speakers of Uralic languages can entirely ignore gender. Slavic languages are "satellite-framed" languages (Talmy 2000: Chapter 3), meaning that they tend to mark the path of motion in a satellite ... Read More

  • Some Recent Developments in Slavic Phonology
    • Abstract: A description of recent phonological developments from an areal point of view is a daunting task. It can be approached from various angles, such as historical, typological, theoretical, or phenomenological. The latest article-size overview of Slavic phonology considered the vast literature of the 20th century, taking into consideration synchronic and diachronic phonology, descriptive and theoretical phonology, structuralist and generativist phonology, and phonology as approached by Slavists and general linguists (Bethin 2006a). In the present article, I will not cover topics in historical Slavic (for a short overview, see the article in this volume by Nesset) or dialectology but will attempt to present an overview ... • Slavic Sociolinguistics in the Post-Iron Curtain World: A Survey of Recent
           Research
    • Abstract: The title suggested for this contribution to the Silver Anniversary issue of the Journal of Slavic Linguistics (JSL) raises an interesting question: more than 25 years after the collapse of socialist regimes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, does it still make sense to refer to the fall of the Iron Curtain when discussing the state of Slavic sociolinguistics' The answer, I think, must be a qualified "yes." Although it would be inaccurate to say that no real socio-linguistic research was conducted in Slavic-speaking countries before the fall of the Iron Curtain—and we must always keep in mind that we are dealing with a number of different countries with their own individual conditions and traditions of ... • When We Went Digital and Seven Other Stories about Slavic Historical
           Linguistics in the 21st Century
    • Abstract: It has been a long time since Slavic linguistics was Slavic historical linguistics, but historical work in Slavic is still alive and kicking in the 21st century—as I hope this overview will show. My account, by necessity incomplete and to some extent subjective, will be based on an inclusive view of what historical linguistics is. However, I will not discuss ongoing and recent changes in the modern Slavic languages and thus not explore phenomena such as the emergence of the so-called new vocative in Russian (Danièl´ 2009 and Andersen 2012) or recent changes in particles in conversational Czech (Fried 2009). Instead I will focus on diachronic and synchronic analyses of older stages of the Slavic languages. My ... Read More

  • Slavic Psycholinguistics in the 21st Century
    • Abstract: In 2000 I wrote a position paper based on my presentation at the workshop The Future of Slavic Linguistics (SLING2K) that was held at Indiana University (Sekerina 2006). In it I characterized the field of Slavic psycholinguistics as nascent and named the only conference venue where experimental studies of Slavic languages appeared, namely, the Annual Workshop on Formal Approaches to Slavic Linguistics (FASL); then it was the 8th FASL Workshop that took place in 1999. At that time I was also able to list all of the active laboratories in the U.S. and Europe and name most of the established and rising psycholinguists who worked on Slavic languages. The experiments that I described encompassed psychophonology ... Read More

  • Slavic Morphology: Recent Approaches to Classic Problems, Illustrated with
           Russian
    • Abstract: This article comes at an interesting time for the field of Slavic morphology. As is well known, morphological theory largely went into hibernation in the middle of the 20th century within general linguistics circles, especially in North America, where it was nearly swallowed up on the one side by syntax and on the other by phonology. The generative program pursued the hypothesis that morphology could be reduced to these two other components and has no autonomous structure. This left Slavic morphology in an isolated position. Prague and Moscow School Structuralism put morphology (along with phonology) at the center of investigation, and this focus continued to echo among many Slavic-centric linguists. Moreover, the ...
