  • Lessons from Quaker History: What’s an Historian To Say about Whittaker
           Chambers and Clarence Pickett'
    • Abstract: One of the most prominent intellectuals within the budding conservative political movement in the 1950s was the ex-Communist David Whittaker Chambers,1 a member, with his wife and two children, of Pipe Creek Friends Meeting, a part of Baltimore Yearly Meeting. Witness, the memoir of his years in the Communist Party and service as a courier for other spies in the United States government bureaucracy, including Alger Hiss, who had worked with the American Friends Service Committee, has become something of a classic.2 The book is suffused with Chambers’ encounter with Quakerism to which he was exposed at the 20th Street Meeting (Orthodox) in New York City after he left the Party in 1938; it certainly would not be a ... • The Blessed Channel of Work: Gender, Power and the Union of the Women’s
Foreign Missionary Societies in the Religious Society of Friends
    • Abstract: Esther Tuttle Pritchard was upset. As editor of the Friends Missionary Advocate, the leading periodical of the various female foreign missionary associations within the Religious Society of Friends, she had worked for over half a decade to forge these disparate organizations into a unified whole. She saw this creation as critical to maintaining women’s status within her denomination. Yet on the eve of the 1887 conference in Indianapolis that would bring the various women foreign missionary groups within Gurneyite and Orthodox Quakerism together for the first time, new problems were emerging. Writing to her colleague Margaret W. Haines, the President of the Women Friends Foreign Mission Association (WFFMA) of ... Read More

  • The Fearless Benjamin Lay: The Quaker Dwarf Who Became the First
Revolutionary Abolitionist by Marcus Rediker (review)
    • Abstract: It is fitting that Marcus Rediker should begin his biography of Quaker Benjamin Lay with one of Lay’s most dramatic moments of guerilla theater. Lay arrived at the 1738 gathering of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting carrying “a hollowed-out book with a secret compartment into which he had tucked a tied-off animal bladder filled with bright red pokeberry juice.” After an impassioned address against slaveholding, Lay plunged his sword into the book splattering “blood” on those seated nearby (1–2). That event along with the nearly simultaneous publication of his fiery antislavery tract All Slave-Keepers That Keep the Innocent in Bondage, Apostates—“the double explosion of 1738”—marked both a change in Lay’s relationship ... • Nixon’s First Cover-Up: The Religious Life of a Quaker President by
           H. Larry Ingle (review)
    • Abstract: Winston Churchill once memorably quipped that Russia was a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. That might just as aptly have been said of Richard Nixon. The one thing that unites his biographers--sympathetic, hostile, and in-between—is the conviction that Nixon was an extraordinarily complex person whose psychological makeup defies easy analysis. One would think that Nixon’s personal faith would be the key to such an understanding. But Larry Ingle is the first person to attempt a book-length treatment, with Nixon’s Quakerism as a central theme.Nixon, with Herbert Hoover, is one of the two Quakers elected president of the United States. Nixon was a lifelong Friend, who, even though he eschewed Quaker ... Read More
