  • “True” Conservatives in Fifties America: Robert A. Taft and the
Politics of a Hoosier Soldier in Korea
    • Abstract: On November 6, 1952, a Hoosier soldier serving in Korea, Private David Dixon, declared in a letter to his mother that “the biggest news . . . is the election results. . . . We can say we put our man in; now I hope he continues to do what he has said he would in all those campaign speeches.”1 Dwight Eisenhower, the president-elect, had promised to bring the boys home, the most important campaign pledge no doubt for Dixon’s mother and for many soldiers.2 Yet Eisenhower missed the mark in at least one notable comparison to this private’s first choice, Republican presidential candidate Robert A. Taft. Dixon told his mother: “I myself still stick to Taft and his isolationist ideas.”3 These words flowed in the context of ... Read More

  • Everett Tilson: Pioneer in the Condemnation of White Privilege
    • Abstract: In 1986, Dr. Peggy McIntosh of Wellesley College delivered a paper at the Virginia Women’s Association conference in which she explained at length the phrase “white privilege.” McIntosh began her presentation by explaining how she became deeply aware of what she called “male privilege”—that is, how most men unconsciously accept many advantages in higher education curricula that women cannot access. At that time, McIntosh taught women’s studies at Wellesley. She offered examples of male privilege in higher education beginning with the claim that men figure most importantly in the curriculum because they are the principal actors in life and civilization. McIntosh proceeded to explain that in discussions about ... Read More

  • Barack Obama Day and the Hazelwood Subdivision: Public Rituals of
Empowerment in an African American Community
    • Abstract: On Saturday, November 8, 2008, four days after the election of the forty-fourth president of the United States, the community of Hazelwood in Blue Ash, Ohio, a small African American subdivision less than 20 miles north of Cincinnati, initiated its first ceremony honoring as a holiday the election of the nation’s first African American president. To the residents in attendance, the ceremony represented several decades of public rituals that have historically functioned to sustain the value of community. According to anthropologists, public rituals are formal repeated sets of actions performed in special places that verify popular beliefs and values. Although the subdivision was created in 1888, the communal values ... Read More

  • Enchanted Ground: The Spirit Room of Jonathan Koons by Sharon Hatfield
           (review)
    • Abstract: Jonathan Koons, a nineteenth-century medium living in rural southeast Ohio, is considered by many historians to be the first person in the spiritualist movement to develop “direct voice” communication with spirits (76), yet his story is overshadowed by more famous—and often controversial—mediums of the time, such as the Fox sisters of Rochester, New York, and the Davenport brothers of Buffalo. In Enchanted Ground, journalist and nonfiction writer Sharon Hatfield crafts a colorful and meticulously researched story that demonstrates the significant influence of Koons and his family of mediums on the spiritualist movement in the United States.Hatfield begins with a vivid description of a séance in Jonathan Koons’s ... • Polonium in the Playhouse: The Manhattan Project’s Secret Chemistry Work
in Dayton, Ohio by Linda Carrick Thomas (review)
    • Abstract: Those familiar with the Manhattan Project are likely to know some of the significant people and places involved. Names such as Robert Oppenheimer or Leslie Groves perhaps, and sites such as Hanford, Oak Ridge, and Los Alamos. Less widely known are the many other men, women, and places critical to the creation of the world’s first atomic weapons. In her book Polonium in the Playhouse, author and journalist Linda Carrick Thomas reveals the important role of the men and women in Dayton, Ohio, who performed secret chemistry work for the bombs, particularly her grandfather, Charles Allen Thomas. The book fills an important gap in the knowledge of the project and highlights the importance of not only of Dayton and ... Read More

  • Redemption in ’64: The Champion Cleveland Browns by John M. Harris
           (review)
    • Abstract: From a quick glance at the title, readers might assume that this book is merely a nostalgic look at a successful season that serves to reacquaint Cleveland Browns fans with their proud past. In Redemption in ’64: The Champion Cleveland Browns, John M. Harris offers that and so much more. Harris provides insight into the formation of football’s dominant franchise in the decade following World War II, suggests reasons for its decline by the early 1960s, and explains the unlikely series of events that propelled the Browns back to the top of the football world.Having lost an NFL team when the Rams relocated to Los Angeles following the 1945 season, Cleveland was awarded a franchise for 1946 in the newly formed ...
