  • A Fascist Baby Hawk in Nuremberg: Five Swedish Fascists’ Road Trip to
the Fourth Nazi Party Congress—and the Socialization of a Nazi Mind
    • Abstract: Fascism is not defined by the number of its victims, but by the way it kills them.Northern Europe in the summer of 1929 was unusually stormy and turbulent. According to a national newspaper in Sweden, it was characterized by an “atmospheric anxiety,” and its unpleasant and worrying weather foreshadowed ominous times.2 Around the continent, economic structures were trembling; in October national stock markets started to crash one after another. The European upsurge of the 1920s would soon be replaced by a profound decline and social instability. Unemployment rose, and strikes and labor conflicts increased. In terms of politics, democracy and market liberalism were no longer seen as something credible or attractive ... Read More

  • Editor’s Introduction
    • Abstract: Throughout its history, JSR has included articles on radicalism across the political spectrum, and in fact the international conference we hosted some years ago asked whether (or when) radicalism was “beyond left and right.” At the conference, some scholars told us that to ask the question itself was beyond the pale. JSR’s masthead statement includes this: “With sensitivity and openness to historical and cultural contexts of the term, we loosely define “radical,” as distinguished from “reformers,” to mean groups who seek revolutionary alternatives to hegemonic social and political institutions, and who use violent or nonviolent means to resist authority and to bring about sudden dramatic transformations of ... • Beachhead or Refugium' The Rise and Dilemma of New Right
           Counterculture
    • Abstract: Today’s intellectual far right loves rebellion. In calculated acts of public provocation, right-wing writers and thinkers present themselves as outsiders and nonconformists, bravely breaking the taboos of a “politically correct” mainstream culture. This is particularly the case for the far right’s most important intellectual movement, the loose assortment of writers and publications known as the European New Right. It is not for nothing that one of the New Right’s premier publications in Germany is called Sezession (Secession) and carries as its motto the Latin inscription etiam si omnes—ego non (“even if everyone, not I”).1 Louder and less refined are the so-called “Identitarians,” a youth-oriented offshoot of the ... • Radical Russianness: The Religious and Historiosophic Context of Aleksandr
           Dugin’s Anti-Occidentalism
    • Abstract: One of the main factors of Russian political and intellectual life is anti-Occidentalism. Its significance has become more visible in the West since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2014. It should be noted, however, that contemporary Russian anti-Occidentalism cannot be considered a result of this conflict or the support shown by Western countries to Ukraine. Anti-Occidentalism is deeply rooted in Russia’s political, national, and religious traditions. The conflict in Ukraine has only revealed its scale and consequences. There is a long-standing tradition of anti-Occidentalism in Russia, both in the imperial and Soviet period of its history. One can distinguish short and relatively ... Read More

  • Neoecofascism: The Example of the United States
    • Abstract: Humankind alone is no longer the focus of thought, but rather life as a whole. This striving toward connectedness with the totality of life, with nature itself, a nature into which we are born, this is the deepest meaning and the true essence of National Socialist thought.1We are a special part of the natural order, being in it and above it. We have the potential to become nature’s steward or its destroyer. European countries should invest in national parks, wilderness preserves, and wildlife refuges, as well as productive and sustainable farms and ranches. The natural world—and our experience of it—is an end in itself.2In a context of increasing concern regarding global warming and its effects on human society and ... Read More

  • Populism in Greece' Right, Left, and Laclau’s “Jacobinism” in
the Years of the Goudi Coup, 1908–1910
    • Abstract: Accusing the right and the left of establishing incongruous coalitions on the basis of a shared populism is a common topic in contemporary antipopulist discourse. Obvious political goals can usually be detected behind this argument: political opponents of the liberal center are exposed as inconsistent with their principles, and political frontiers are (re)constructed based on the contrast between modernization and its opponents—who are defined only negatively. There is a paradox here: usually it is populism that is associated with such sharp dichotomies, and nonpopulism with more complex perceptions of the political and the social.Although the extent to which such a point of view constructs its opponent (that is ... There are some whose love of justice, truth and beauty; whose yearning for betterment and increased social opportunity, outweighs the tempting bait of ease and respectability. Them the established order smites. His life and work may be mostly forgotten now, yet in the first half of the last century American radical Ralph H. Chaplin (1887–1961) was one of the most important authors, artists, and activists in the movement for the rights of organized labor. In the current day, Chaplin is probably best remembered as the writer of the lyrics to “Solidarity Forever” (1915),2 the venerable union anthem that is still sung to the tune of ... Read More

  • Knights Errant of Anarchy: London and the Italian Anarchist Diaspora
(1880–1917) by Pietro Di Paola (review)
    • Abstract: With The Knights Errant, Pietro Di Paola, a senior lecturer in history, makes a solid contribution to the history of anarchy. The book follows the most recent trend in anarchist historiography by using a transnational approach. This approach has emerged in response to criticism of national studies of anarchism, which fail to explain the successes and retreats of Italian anarchists and casts the movement as disorganized and ineffective.1 Building on the works of David Berry, Constance Bantman, and Benedict Anderson, the transnational perspective shows continuity in the Italian anarchist movement, explains reactions to repression, and expands the movement’s geographical scope providing a fuller understanding of the ... • The Ecocentrists: A History of Radical Environmentalism by Keith Makoto
           Woodhouse (review)
    • Abstract: Radical environmentalists are not outliers to be written off for their extremism. In fact, according to historian Keith Makoto Wood-house, radical groups like Earth First! could not be more relevant to the development of the broader environmental movement, and have shaped contemporary debates about issues such as climate change. Woodhouse’s book promotes an awareness of differences within ecocentric environmentalism as well as radicals’ sometimes unexpected alliances, which occurred, in part at least, because of their opposition to classical liberalism. By framing his important contribution to the history of radical environmentalism with its relevance to contemporary climate change activism, Woodhouse underscores ... Read More

  • The Misinterpellated Subject by James R. Martel (review)
    • Abstract: The Misinterpellated Subject by James R. Martel explores Althusser’s theory of interpellation to reveal the revolutionary potential of what he calls misinterpellation. For Althusser, interpellation is a process of political subjectivity where much of the time the intended subject of the interpellator’s hail is the one that heeds the call. However, Martel is more interested in the minority of cases when the call is misinterpellated by an unintended subject. Thus, Martel analyzes how misinterpellation allows unintended audiences to resist power and systems of oppression, even to the point of revolution. The text is divided into two parts with each of the seven chapters focused around a call or hailing. Part I ... Read More

  • Considering Emma Goldman: Feminist Political Ambivalence and the
Imaginative Archive by Clare Hemmings (review)
    • Abstract: In Considering Emma Goldman: Feminist Political Ambivalence and the Imaginative Archive, Clare Hemmings, professor of feminist theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science, suggests that studying anarchist Emma Goldman’s work and life could radicalize the contemporary political imaginary as well as feminist political practice. For Hemmings, turning to Goldman may inspire scholars and activists to refuse political certainty and embrace political ambivalence. Hemmings suggests that embracing ambivalence challenges acceptance of inherited truths, including the idea that we know how to create a just society. Even more, accepting that ambivalence is a productive intellectual and political position ... Read More

  • The Art of Protest: Culture and Activism from the Civil Rights Movement to
the Present ed. by T. V. Reed (review)
    • Abstract: In this substantial new edition of The Art of Protest, T. V. Reed explores the way a variety of social movements used cultural forms to convey their political commitment. The relationship between culture and politics (and political economy) is vital and Reed explores their complex interactions with deftness and verve. Although it is a survey book and operates under the limitations of such a study, it highlights effectively the role that culture has played in and around social movements since the civil rights movement first propelled folk songs to the central stage of political action. The opening chapter, focused on the tradition of freedom songs of the civil rights struggle, sets the tone for the study of ... • The Politics of Attack: Communiqués and Insurrectionary Violence by
           Michael Loadenthal (review)
    • Abstract: Not for the faint of heart, even for those within radical communities, The Politics of Attack outlines diverse connotations for communiques and political violence through fresh readings of critical theory. Attempting to overcome overemphasis that media places upon anarchist violence instead of the critiques that insurrection symbolizes, Michael Loadenthal offers theories for textualizing anarchist agitation. Frequently applying his earlier quantitative work on violent measures used against the neoliberal state, Loadenthal provides discursive analysis to explore questions of theoretical significance for violent acts. Consistently defining that the modern state is the most effective terrorist, Politics of Attack ... Read More
