  • Jonathan Swift's Metaphorical Conceptualization of Nature as a Woman and
           His "Aesthetic" Critique of Science
    • Abstract: Jonathan Swift's critique of science has been a persistent issue in Swift studies. He has been regarded by some scholars as a thoroughgoing antagonist of science, and by others as a moderate one—the latter group seeing him as opposing only certain branches of it or its wrong applications.1 Another approach in Swift studies is to examine the critique of science in relation to Swift's views on other matters, such as politics, religion, morality, and modernity.2 A third perspective involves a contextual study of Swift's critique of science and its motivations—for example, Gregory Lynall studies Swift's "personal vendetta" against Newton as underlying many of his satirical passages (2005: 28); Arthur Case examines ... • The Play of the Line: "Presence Effects" and the Voice of the Latent in
           Wordsworth's Prelude
    • Abstract: Much of William Wordsworth's most aesthetically potent verse involves traumatic confrontations with less than fully definable presences. These encounters are among those that Geoffrey Hartman describes as "apocalyptic": impending, revelatory, traumatic severances from nature against which the poet must defend himself through the rhetoric of holism, specifically akedah, or the "tying or binding" that represents "the marriage of imagination with nature" (225). The sublime terror of these encounters, as well as their post-traumatic effects upon the aesthetic and social development of the poetic personae who have endured them, has figured significantly in critical commentary on Wordsworth at least since Hartman, and ... • The Heroism of Serving Coffee: Joseph Conrad and The Nigger of the
           'Narcissus'
    • Abstract: To date, there is no satisfactory explanation why Joseph Conrad once deemed The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' (1897) to be "the story by which, as creative artist, I stand or fall, and which, at any rate, no one else could have written. A landmark in literature, I can safely say, for nothing like it has been ever done before" (CL5 145), as he wrote in a slanting hand in a letter to the Irish-American collector John Quinn in 1912. At first, it is difficult to understand why, in 1912, Conrad singles out this novel of 55,000 words as his most representative work as a creative artist, at a time when he had written "Heart of Darkness" (1899), Lord Jim (1900), Nostromo (1904), The Secret Agent (1907), and Under Western Eyes ... • Visual Mask Metaphors in Jean Genet and Maurizio Cattelan
    • Abstract: I visited Manhattan for the first time when pregnant with my youngest child. Not quite a beached-whale yet, I could enjoy long days at the museums. Somewhere between the Avenue of the Americas and 5th Ave., I took a lift and reached an art gallery where I followed a narrow, unadorned, gray concrete corridor that seemed to be winding around the block. Taking one left turn and then another, I suddenly found myself in the presence of Maurizio Cattelan's "Not Afraid of Love" (2000). A life-size elephant, immobile and silent, stood hooded in front of me, in a room just large enough to contain the sculpture. There was no one else around—just the elephant and I. Mesmerized, I could not walk away. The incongruous presence ... Read More

  • Existential Revision in Philip Roth's The Breast
    • Abstract: Eight years following the publication of The Breast (1972), Philip Roth created a revised edition, the emendations only recently receiving scholarly attention.1 This study suggests that key changes enhance what I have elsewhere (Duban 2017) identified as Sartrian resonance in Roth's 1972 account of David Kepesh's transformation into a breast. That outlook invites the suggestion that first-person narration in the earlier edition relates to the tenet, in Being and Nothingness (L'être et le néant, 1943), that consciousness arises as an upsurge of nothingness amid the dross of non-reflective Being. Unlike the stasis of mundane matter, the nothingness at the core of self-reflection features existential potential and ... Read More

  • Nabokov and Banville: Hidden Stories in Despair and The Book of Evidence
    • Abstract: Nabokov's presence may be felt in the works of several contemporary British writers. The works of Ian McEwan, Martin Amis, and Julian Barnes embed allusions to Nabokov's fiction. These writers acknowledge their fascination with the Russian-American writer in their articles, essays, and interviews. Yet perhaps most unrelentingly Nabokov's ghost haunts the texts of John Banville. Birchwood echoes voices out of Ada; Ghosts and Athena have shades of Pale Fire; The Sea resounds with the ambivalent nostalgia of Lolita; Nightspawn mirrors the patterns of The Defense. These echoes have been noted by Banville's critics who generally consider Nabokov a key influence on the Irish author. Banville himself admits a fascination ... Read More

  • Inherent Vice, Bleeding Edge, and Thomas Pynchon's Hardboiled
    • Abstract: In his review of Bleeding Edge (2013), Michael Chabon points out that most of Thomas Pynchon's novels have "been founded on a bedrock of detective fiction" (69). It is certainly true that Pynchon's work is frequently structured around attempts to solve mysteries, from Herbert Stencil's efforts in V. (1963) to find and identify the elusive, eponymous being, which may be "nothing but the projection of Stencil upon certain bits of information or clues" (Gilmore 5), to Lew Basnight's attempts in Against the Day (2006) to discover the nature of the "sin he was supposed once to have committed" (Pynchon 2007: 41). Many scholars have, however, preferred to view Pynchon's works as epistemological, ontological, or textual ... Read More

  • Subnational Discourse as Counter Imagination in Esther Syiem's "To the
Rest of India from Another Indian": Towards a Confederal Political
           Assumption
    • Abstract: This paper explores Esther Syiem's representation of her Khasi community's strangeness to the dominant national pedagogy of India and her formulation of a Khasi counter-imagination in her 2013 poem "To the Rest of India from Another Indian" as subnational discourse. We claim that the subnational discourse of Esther Syiem provincializes the centrality of the dominant national pedagogy in order to create a confederal political imagination and assert Khasi's equivalence with it. We conclude by discussing how the provincialization, advocated by Syiem's subnational discourse, modifies Homi Bhabha's notion of minority discourse.Interactions of an ethnic community of the North-East with the national discourse as well as ... • Narrative Faith: Dostoevsky, Camus, and Singer by David Stromberg (review)
    • Abstract: This engaging study contains close readings of Fyodor Dostoevsky's Demons (1872), Albert Camus's The Plague (1947), and Isaac Bashevis Singer's The Penitent (1983), analyzed as representations of faith and doubt and evoking analogous states of mind in the reader: the three writers "use doubt-generating narrators to both portray crises of faith in their characters and instigate them in their readers—creating a doubling effect between the level of literary representation and the level of real-life experience" (xii). Regrettably, Stromberg does not engage in the current discussions on experientiality, nor with the latest works on the unreliable narrator. Most of his theoretical references pertain to the ethics of ... Read More

  • Lyric Cousins: Poetry and Musical Form by Fiona Sampson (review)
    • Abstract: Fiona Sampson's book, Lyric Cousins: Poetry and Musical Form, traces the connection between poetry and Western music in an attempt to understand how a poem or a musical piece creates its non-linguistic meaning. To do so, Sampson considers "what poetry does as an extension of what music does" (95–96), in order to move beyond the denotative aspects of a poem—"what the words mean"—in search of those non-denotative elements "that constitute the form" (6). These formal elements, Sampson argues, foreground the role of the audience in producing the poem's meaning: a poem is an experience, she concludes, which the reader co-creates.Sampson's approach is informed by the works of Edward Said (Musical Elaborations, 1991) and ... • Nabokov and Indeterminacy: The Case of The Real Life of Sebastian Knight
           by Priscilla Meyer (review)
    • Abstract: The growing recognition of the thought-suffused texture and artistic excellence of Vladimir Nabokov's work has in recent decades gained expression in books wholly devoted to one of his novels—Invitation to a Beheading, The Gift, Lolita, Pnin, Pale Fire, Ada— or even to a single short story such as "Signs and Symbols." In the past few years three books have been devoted to The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, a novel once regarded by many (including, regrettably, my younger self) as brilliant but flawed and mainly transitional from Nabokov's writing in Russian to his English-language fiction. This new interest in the novel has been partly stimulated by a growing corpus of biographical materials—in the first place ... Read More

  • German-Jewish Thought and Its Afterlife: A Tenuous Legacy by Vivian Liska
           (review)
    • Abstract: Vivian Liska's book examines the literary and philosophical legacy of five major German-Jewish writers—Kafka, Benjamin, Scholem, Arendt, and Celan—beyond the purview of the immediate "German" and "Jewish" cultural and historical contexts. The book discusses the ways in which their ideas have been appropriated by subsequent intellectuals and philosophers belonging to the postmodernist camp (in its deconstructive variant), as well as to more recent theorists with a distinct "Pauline" orientation in thought, such as Agamben, Badiou, and Žižek.The question that frames the study concerns the afterlife of Jewish tradition in modernity, understood theologically in terms of a disruption in the transmission of revealed law. ...
