  • Narratives of Korea and Dersim in Erendiz Atasü's The Other Side of
           the Mountain
    • Abstract: In her 1995 autobiographical novel Dağın Öteki Yüzü (The Other Side of the Mountain, 2000), Erendiz Atasü narrates her family history from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the 1990s and laments that the armed conflicts in the Dersim region of Eastern Anatolia (1937–1938) and Turkey's entry into the Korean War (1950–1953) shattered her and her family's hopes for "the bright future" (51) of the Turkish Republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923. The novel ends with Atasü's "Letter to the Reader," explaining that Vicdan, one of the first Turkish students to receive state scholarship to study abroad, is based on her mother, and Raik, a math teacher from the Black Sea region, on her father. They both lost their ... Read More

  • The Labyrinth of Central Europe and the World Paradise in Milan Kundera's
           Ignorance
    • Abstract: It is easy to get lost in the maze of interpretations related to the concept of Central Europe, frequently "elusive" (Bugge 15) and contradictory. "Central Europe" is not semantically neutral in its historical, political, ethnic, and cultural connotations,1 and each of the applications of this term has a very specific goal, reflecting, in turn, the aspirations, desires, hopes, dreams, or nostalgia of its interpreter. Only the authority of the interpreter determines its attraction for the rest of the world. Milan Kundera, one of the best known literary figures to be part of the discussion about Central Europe, has been extraordinarily successful in bringing the topic to the fore.2 He has obstinately defended the ... • Cancrizans: The Quest for Origin and the Assault on Alterity in Jonathan
           Littell's The Kindly Ones
    • Abstract: And thus I fell into a long, endless stretto, where every response came before the question was over, but in retrograde, like a cancrizans. In an interview with Samuel Blumenfeld in Le Monde, Littell said that a writer "asks questions as he tries to make his way through the darkness. Not towards the light, but further into the darkness, to arrive at a darkness even darker than his starting place" (Blumenfeld and Littell). In search for the motives of the perpetrators of the Holocaust (Nora and Littell 27), in his 2006 novel Les Bienveilliantes (The Kindly Ones, 2009) Littell portrays his narrator, a Nazi officer and doctor of jurisprudence Maximilien Aue, who, like his author but in life rather than in imagination ... • "Something so deeply earned": Sympathy in William Gibson's The Peripheral
    • Abstract: William Gibson's 2014 novel The Peripheral belongs to a body of work that makes the case for sympathy as an effective and affective social strategy. This article seeks to join ongoing critical and political discussions on the role and relevance of literature in the contemporary moment1 by mapping out a net of relations that links three key issues in respect to Gibson's novel: the strategy of metonymy, the exploration of sympathy, and the rethinking of realism. Working in three different registers, literary trope, human social capacity, and genre, this article shows how Gibson's text inextricably links the literary with social dimensions, intertwining form with content. I propose that Gibson adopts metonymy as an ... Read More

  • Theory's Autoimmunity: Skepticism, Literature, and Philosophy by Zahi
           Zalloua (review)
    • Abstract: Zahi Zalloua's Theory Autoimmunity: Skepticism, Literature, and Philosophy, proposes to re-legitimize "theory," which has been accused, by the proponents of the new speculative turn in the humanities and of so-called Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) of aporetic skepticism at best, and of nihilism at worst.I am sympathetic with Zalloua's desire to reclaim skepticism as an art of reading and reading as a hermeneutic of skepticism. Moreover, I share his passion for interpretive hunger—a hunger that cannot be satisfied unless one betrays the text. Zalloua follows the hunger metaphor throughout his book, hence the Dali illustration of Montaigne's Essais that adorns the book cover—a striking display of the Essayist staring ... Read More

  • Why Iris Murdoch Matters: Making Sense of Experience in Modern Times by
           Gary Browning (review)
    • Abstract: Gary Browning's Why Iris Murdoch Matters and the collection Murdoch on Truth and Love that he has edited (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) are timely since, notwithstanding the upcoming centenary conference at Oxford, in the two decades since her decease Iris Murdoch has often been seen as dated and her fictional worlds as banal. Why Iris Murdoch Matters examines the contemporary significance of Murdoch's thoughts on metaphysics, literature, morality, religion, and politics. Browning follows, as it were, the Murdochian style of "the indeterminate, the messy and the formless" (Jordan 123). However, as suggested by his subtitle, he maintains a sense of order by focusing on Murdoch's view of the value of experience in a ... Read More

  • Approaches to Teaching the Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson ed. by Mark C.
Long and Sean Ross Meehan (review)
    • Abstract: This volume is, as might be expected, as much about teaching as it is about Emerson—which is to say, about teaching the humanities today under what emerges as more or less severe pressure. Almost every essay opens with remarks on how difficult it is to teach Emerson, how difficult to entice or seduce students, who have other priorities, to read and engage with him at all. It is a portrait of the academy today, valiantly attempting to uphold its commitment to liberal arts. One of the claims that emerges repeatedly throughout the volume is that liberal arts are closely tied to or embodied in Emerson himself. If one is going out to battle for creative individuality, Emerson is one's sword. In a sense, the very notion ... Read More

  • The Politics and Poetics of Friendship ed. by Ewa Kowal and Robert Kusek
           (review)
    • Abstract: Aristotle, Cicero, Montaigne, Bacon, Derrida, and Agamben theorized on the meaning of friendship, yet it remains a slippery concept and in actual instances a relationship challenging to chart. The role of friendship underpins works of literature, from Shakespeare's plays to the contemporary novel Moth Smoke by the Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid. The twenty-two essays in The Politics and Poetics of Friendship investigate specific instances of friendship in works of literature and between historical figures—authors and artists—who influenced one another. A range of concerns emerges from the collection. How does an individual benefit from a friendship' (One author asserts, "Because we are prone to self-deceptions, we ... Read More

  • Anatomy of an Interpretive Controversy: The Case of Benito Cereno
    • Abstract: Herman Melville's novella Benito Cereno has been held in high esteem ever since the "Melville revival" of the 1920s.1 For many years, two opposing readings of the novella have been common.2 According to one, the rebelling slaves and their leader Babo symbolize demonic evil; according to the other, the slaves are admirable freedom fighters. These interpretations do not refer to the attitude of the readers, but to the Author's (implied author's) attitude.3 These two readings had been actively controversial from the 1920s until the mid-1960s (the "early period"). Since then, new interests and new interpretive methods have made the controversy obsolete. The aim of this article is neither to propose a new reading of the ... Read More

  • The Excess of Mimesis: Reframing The Picture of Dorian Gray
    • Abstract: [Art] is a veil, rather than a mirror. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. The mirroring epigraphs that frame the subject of this essay suggest an inversion of perspectives. Is Oscar Wilde simply opposed to a mimetic aesthetics that defines "art" as a realistic representation, imitation, or "mirror" of reality—as his definition of art as a "veil" suggests' Or is Wilde actually playing a double game, that is, a mirror game of rejecting standard accounts of realism that define art as an imitation of life on one side, in order to unveil, on the other side, a mimetic excess that emerges from the interplay between the picture and the model, the copy and the original, but also life and art—the ... • Nabokov's Otchaianie, La Méprise, Despair: Tracking a Would-Be
           International Novel
    • Abstract: For several decades now, the English version of Vladimir Nabokov's seventh Russian novel, Otchaianie, has circulated in the Vintage International series of paperbacks under the title of Despair. To judge from the website for the series, "international" in this current Anglophone context can mean widely celebrated foreign authors, beginning with Thomas Mann1 and going on to include other, more recent Nobel laureates such as Gabriel García Márquez, V. S. Naipaul, Orhan Pamuk, and Kazuo Ishiguro. But "Vintage International" also applies to American authors with significant reputations abroad, such as William Faulkner, James Baldwin, or Philip Roth, the latter represented with a list of Vintage International titles as ... • Perception and Prejudice: Attention and Moral Progress in Iris Murdoch's
           Philosophy and C. S. Lewis's A Grief Observed
    • Abstract: In her 1964 essay "The Idea of Perfection" Iris Murdoch famously claims, "I can only choose within the world I can see" (1999: 329). This thought is expressive of a central tenet of Murdoch's thought: vision precedes choice. On the face of it, this may seem a rather straightforward claim. What you have to choose between depends on how you perceive the world, what kind of choices you can discern, and who (or what) you are. In short, how you perceive things will shape your moral world. Since vision, therefore, is a register of our moral life that is more fundamental than questions about actions and choices, the question about how to perceive, and perceive truly, must be regarded as utterly fundamental to Murdoch. ...
