  • The Contributions and Constraints of Contemporary Immigration and
           Citizenship: Commemorating Canada’s 150 Years
    • Abstract: Although neither selected as representative of the field of Canadian ethnic studies, nor comprehensive, the articles in this special issue of Canadian Ethnic Studies/Études ethniques au Canada, commemorating Canada’s 150 years, do provide a good sense of the contemporary state of ethnic studies in Canada. The articles consist of diverse perspectives, methodologies, substantive topics and disciplines, yet they also share common features and point to common directions. I will start from their diversity, representative of and continuing the historical diversity in the field of ethnic studies, then move on to their similarities and common directions which reflect broader scholarly, theoretical and policy ... • Seeking Equity: Disrupting a History of Exclusionary Immigration
           Frameworks
    • Abstract: What comprises the Canadian identity' It is still elusive for some, especially immigrants who are racialized, disabled, classed, and especially if they are constructed at the intersection of these identity markers. It is through immigration and settlement policies that a country expresses the ideas of an imagined community and nation. All immigrant societies face challenges of facilitating integration into their national communities and therefore many of them, including Canada, have created frameworks that construct a preferred class of immigrants perceived to be most likely to meet economic and social integration challenges. Eva Mackey (2002) notes that, while “immigration was essential for nation-building” and ... Read More

  • Social Consequences of Securitizing Citizenship: Two-Tiered Citizenry and
           Anti-Immigrant Attitudes
    • Abstract: “Citizenship is more than an individual exchange of freedoms for rights; it is also membership in a body politic, a nation, and a community. To be deemed fair, a system must offer its citizens equal opportunities for public recognition, and groups cannot systematically suffer from misrecognition in the form of stereotype and stigma.” In the context of the war on terror, several Western governments passed legislation that makes it easier to revoke the citizenships of dual and multiple nationals. These new policies take revocation procedures further away from courtrooms, and leave them to ministerial discretion. Under this new system, the appropriate cabinet minister makes the decision whether to revoke ... Read More

  • How Do English-speaking Caribbean Immigrants in Toronto Find Jobs':
Exploring the Relevance of Social Networks
    • Abstract: This paper draws from a doctoral dissertation that examined factors beyond human capital that influenced labour market outcomes for immigrants to Toronto from Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. The majority of Canada’s immigrants from these three countries live in Toronto. In addition, these immigrants are primarily racialized individuals who possess strong English language skills and high levels of education, training and work experience, but have experienced higher unemployment rates and lower incomes than the Canadian-born population (Colin 2007; James 2009; Preston et al. 2010). The key argument is that for English-speaking Caribbean immigrants, social networks are as important, if not more so ... Read More

  • The Development of the Chinese Community in Saskatoon
    • Abstract: The history of Chinese immigration to Canada started when the first group of Chinese labourers arrived in the West Coast and joined the workers building the Pacific Railway. Initially they were segregated from mainstream Canadian society in physical, social and cultural ways. Nevertheless, over time, they have gradually integrated into the Canadian society by living and working resiliently and collaboratively. After Canada became more multicultural, Chinese Canadians and other immigrants have been increasingly integrated and continue to contribute to the diverse, mobile and vibrant society in Canada. According to the National Household Survey (NHS) in 2011, the Chinese in Canada numbered about 1,487,580 ... Read More

  • Dutch-Canadian Writers Contribute to Canadian Literature
    • Abstract: Literary scholarship is an important aspect of ethnic studies. Writers’ stories showcase the wide ranging cultural diversity of Canada’s ethnic groups. The cultural expressions of some European immigrant groups, such as Dutch-Canadians, have a tendency to be overlooked. Dutch-Canadian literature shares stories of immigration experiences that reveal the assimilation patterns of this immigrant ethnic group. Although it comprises a substantial body of work, including some authors nationally recognized through literary awards, such as Guy Vanderhaeghe who received the Governor General’s Literary Award three times, its presence is rarely noted in Canadian literature. The emphasis in this article is on the early works ... Read More

  • Gender and Care Relationships in Transnational Families: Implications for
           Citizenship and Belonging
    • Abstract: The literature1 on transnational care has burgeoned over the last few decades, sensitizing social scientists and policy-makers to the forms and social implications of care work across borders. Caregiving for pay and associated transnational mothering have been the focus of scholarly attention, typically in terms of migrant women from the Global South (de Leon 2014; Ehrenreich and Hochschild 2002; Gamburd 2000; Gibson, Law and McKay 2001; Hochschild 2000; Hondagneu-Sotelo and Avila 1997; Lan 2003; Parreñas 2000, 2001a, 2002, and 2005; Pyle 2006), with concerns such as “global care chains,” impacts on children, families, and gender, de-skilling and the precarious citizenship status of paid care givers (Ball 2004; ... Essentially, the brand conveys a message of openness and supportiveness through the concept of Empowered Idealism. My imagination of Canada was this multicultural country with universities full of international students. That was my imagination before coming to Canada, just because of all these websites, and my [migrant family friend] and the media, so that’s what I was expecting… [Upon arrival in urban center of Atlantic Canada] I definitely felt in minority… all white people… ... • A Place in the Sun: Haiti, Haitians, and the Remaking of Quebec by Sean
           Mills (review)
    • Abstract: Building upon The Empire Within: Postcolonial Thought and Political Activism in Sixties Montreal, University of Toronto Historian Sean Mills incorporates his past analysis into this nuanced discussion of the interconnected histories of Canada, Quebec, and Haiti. Chronologically structured, A Place in the Sun opens with the 1937 Congress on the French Language in Canada. Constructed as a part of a broader Latin and Catholic culture by Quebecois and Haitian intellectuals, Mills argues, both societies nevertheless existed in a profoundly asymmetrical relationship with each other. Persistent representations of “Haiti as a parallel society upholding French civilization and Haiti as an infantilized Other” were ... Read More
