  • Family Physics
    • Abstract: You’ve been going through a lot, Sarah said on the phone. Everyone kept saying this to me, that I had been going through a lot. I did not agree, yet I knew the “lot” to which she was making an inaccurate reference was how, in the last three months, I’d gotten married, filed for divorce, moved several times, quit my job, and driven to Montana, where I began working in a grocery store, stocking beans. Karen had called it The Blitz, though it’s not like anyone died. But Karen is, by most accounts, my mother, so she has a certain perverted perspective on what I do, this thing that was once in her body, now walking around the world, messing things up.How are you doing' Sarah asked. Are you feeling all right'I feel all ... Read More

  • King Me
    • Abstract: At the kitchen sink, Mary Morris is washing the bowl she used for lunch: salad with sliced carrots and radishes and tomatoes from the garden, button mushrooms and stale sunflower seeds from the cheap grocery, some watercress she picked from around the well, all covered a little too thickly in ranch dressing. She takes a sip of lemonade, notices the rim of the salad bowl is chipped. Frank, she thinks. Her husband is clumsy. It is hot and still and even if the radio were turned off she would know a storm is coming, but the radio is always on. It is her constant companion, along with the television in the living room and the computer in the cluttered office with its slow, stuttering connection. Every few minutes she ... Read More

  • The Minister of Ministrations
    • Abstract: How can we explain Bruno Gröning’s explosive impact in post–World War II Germany, like a bolt out of the blue' People waited in the rain for days to catch a glimpse of him, prostrated themselves in supplication before him, tried to buy his bathwater, and believed he could raise the dead. What freighted his appearance with such intense outpourings of emotion' Had he emerged at any other moment, he might have remained a simple lay healer. He would have developed a local following, treated the sick in his community, and had no wider influence. Instead, he was hailed as a messiah. The secular imagination fails before scenes like those that greeted Gröning. One thing seems certain. His arrival would never have been so ... Read More

  • Mermaid River
    • Abstract: The sign read, “welcome to mermaid river” and in smaller print, “no swimming, the rocks are sharp,” but my grandmother remembered when the river was just a river. Nobody called it any name or took photos in front of it, and the rocks were sharp but it wasn’t anything to keep anyone from swimming. When my grandmother was a girl, the river used to be fat. The day I sat with her across from Mermaid River, it was thinned down and half dried up. And the stones were sharper, angrier than my grandmother remembered, as if the river rebelled when the resort wanted to stretch and the surrounding land was bought up. The river became Mermaid River, and what wasn’t bush to be chopped down were houses where country people lived. ... Read More

           Primrose
    • Abstract: “. . . It has been the custom of travellers to describe and group together all the fine plants they have met with during a long journey, and thus produce the effect of a gay and flower-painted landscape . . .”The yellow evening primrose opens only at dusk, and so rapidly that the blossoming occurs within ... • Beautiful Young Women
    • Abstract: Beautiful young women stretch their bodies along the cliffs to catch the sun. Their wet bathing costumes, the thimblefuls of water in their navels, begin to dry as the sun rises and warms the air. Seagulls eye their wiggling toes.“What a day for a swim,” someone says, though they swim every day. Each morning as the sun crests the mountains, they dive into the waves. “Swimming is good for beautiful girls,” Mother Ives likes to say. “Seawater purifies the skin.” Their arms and thighs ache from the cold.Out they swim in a staggered line, long pale arms stroking the water, bathing caps bobbing like so many buoys, until they reach the island. The strongest swimmers tap the rock with their fingertips, then somersault and ... Read More

  • On the Transit of Toledo
    • Abstract: In the world above our world there lives a race of perfect beings—beings who are perfect because they are unities, because they are wholes—who are always being called down to this world by half-wits and fools, and who only occasionally, in rare foolish moments of their own, heed that call and decide to descend. They come down to us, they come down to us slowly, but then ill-advisedly they speed up their descent as our summons of them becomes more and more impatient and insistent, and, in passing through the nearly imperceptible white sheet that separates their world from our world, they are mutilated, they are maimed. In their passage, their perfect forms become imperfect: deformed. These deformed forms then proceed ... Read More

  • The Autobiography of My Novel
    • Abstract: The question came amid some more ordinary ones: How long did the book take to write, and did you do any research' Seven years, and yes. And then: Were you a victim of sexual abuse yourself'Yes.Why didn’t you just write about your experience' the reader asked me. Why isn’t it a memoir'I looked at him and felt confused for a moment. I didn’t understand the question immediately. The questioner sounded annoyed, as if I were deliberately hiding something from him. As if he had ordered steak and gotten salmon. Had I chosen' I felt the presence of conflicting, confusing truths. I was talking with a book club in downtown Manhattan, on Wall Street, a paper cup of coffee on the table in front of me. All of us were seated ... Read More
