  • Tony Podlecki: An Appreciation
    • Abstract: At the annual meeting of the Classical Association of Canada in Toronto in May 2015, friends, former students, and colleagues of Tony Podlecki gathered for two stimulating sessions of papers and for a festive meal in his honour. Most of the papers published in this volume were presented then for the first time in oral form.Toronto was a fitting location for this event, since it is near Tony's childhood home in Buffalo, NY, and was where, after studies at Holy Cross College in Massachusetts and at Oxford, he both received his PhD and wedded Jenny. After early work at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, which was led at the time by the Canadian Carl Roebuck, Tony was hired at Penn State University as Chair of ... Read More

  • Archilochos in His Time
    • Abstract: The poetry attributed to Archilochos of Paros seems very different from that of Homer and Hesiod. It features a persona whose words appear to derive from his own life-experiences and feelings. Surviving verses are full of passion, pain, and cynicism, with bits of sagacity, humour, and even philosophy thrown in here and there. Not long ago, modern scholarly consensus reckoned Archilochos a vulgar outlier, renegade, or rebel, even a psychopath.1 More recently, however, such opinions have been superseded by others that take into account the greater complexities affecting the poet and his poetry in his time.2 Notwithstanding, Archilochos and his verses continue to engender controversies, one of which is fundamental: ... • Narrative Bonds in Sophocles' Philoctetes
    • Abstract: Sophocles' Philoctetes is a play that plays with stories. It begins with Odysseus, the archetypal storyteller, instructing Neoptolemus about how to spin a false yarn and so deprive Philoctetes of his famous bow. When these two meet, the lonely outcast Philoctetes tells Neoptolemus the story of how he was abandoned with a festering wound by the Greek army, to which Neoptolemus responds with his own story of betrayal at the hands of the Greek leaders. We also hear stories about the fates of other Greek warriors at Troy, the capture of Helenus and his prophecy about Philoctetes, and finally stories about Heracles in the past and the future fall of Troy.Scholarly attention to these stories began with Tony Podlecki, who ... • The Tactful Chorus: Euripides, Alcestis 326–327, Hecuba
           846–849
    • Abstract: The role of the chorus in Euripides' dramatic scenes—especially scenes of verbal confrontation, deliberation, persuasion, or deception—is not one that usually gets much attention. It is easy to assume that the comments voiced by a chorus-leader in the course of such a scene have mainly formal purposes (such as providing punctuation, breathing space, or a moment of emotional relaxation between speeches) and, even if broadly relevant, have limited dramatic weight. There are some obvious reasons for this. In most tragedies the chorus is a secondary participant in the drama, witnessing the main events, rarely contributing actively to them, and, at most, indirectly affected by them. Its generic identity as "the chorus" ... Read More

  • Tradition and Ambiguity: Heroic Action and Δόλος in Lines 1–85 of
           Sophocles' Electra
    • Abstract: This article is presented as a small token of appreciation for Tony Podlecki's contributions to the study of Classics in Canada.κτείνῃς ἠὲ δόλῳ ἢ ἀμϕαδὸν ὀξέι χαλκῷYou kill either by deceit or openly with sharp bronze(Od. 11.120)Although Sophocles' Electra has generally been regarded as a theatrical masterpiece, there has been no consensus about the reading of the tragedy. While some have seen the revenge in a positive light, others have seen it as a dark act that raises serious moral problems.1 Still others have tried to interpret the play through the character of Electra.2 None of these views seems entirely satisfactory. I therefore take a different approach by re-examining certain relevant points of ... Read More

  • Myths and Mythical Names in Euripides' Andromache
    • Abstract: The tragedy Andromache was staged around 425 bc. The central mythical theme is the Trojan War, considered the cause and beginning of all misfortunes. Andromache, Hector's faithful wife,1 endowed with excellent spirit and not without integrity,2 made Neoptolemus' slave after the fall of Troy,3 has taken refuge, and is a supplicant, in the Temple of Thetis, close to Pharsalus, Thessaly. Her unfortunate situation is due, in great measure, to the jealousy of the barren Hermione, the legitimate wife of Achilles' son.Between Hermione and Andromache two ways of being become apparent: pride, luxury, and power opposite truth and reason. Hermione's father, Menelaus, captures Andromache's and Neoptolemus' son and threatens to ... Read More

  • A Thankless People (Hdt. 5.91.2)
Allies, we recognize that we ourselves made a mistake: led astray by counterfeit oracles, we drove from their homeland men who were friends to us and in particular who would have kept Athens in hand. ... • Hermippos, Aspasia, and the Fates
    • Abstract: "He seems to have been unimportant as a playwright." This was Norwood's dismissive judgement of Hermippos, a view which Gilula, Jones, and I have challenged in recent years, arguing that he was a significant comic poet in the generation before Aristophanes.1 My purpose in this paper, dedicated to Tony Podlecki, who has always been interested in the interaction between comedy and Athenian politics, is to continue this reassessment of Hermippos and to discuss one such interaction from the opening year of the Peloponnesian War.The Suda (ε 3044) presents a brief summary of Hermippos' life and career: Ἕρμιππος, Ἀθηναῖος, κωμικὸς τῆς ἀρχαίας κωμῳδίας, ἑτερόϕθαλμος• ἀδελϕὸς δὲ Μυρτίλου τοῦ κωμικοῦ, δράματα διδάξας μʹ ... • Politics and the Pamphlet of Stesimbrotus of Thasos
    • Abstract: In his critical study of the evidence for the life of the Athenian politician Themistocles, who played so crucial a role in the salvation of Greece in the Persian invasions of 480/79, A.J. Podlecki offers a brief examination of the relevant extant material from the fifth-century pamphlet On Themistocles, Thucydides, and Pericles by Stesimbrotus of Thasos.1 In his conclusion to this review, Podlecki suggests in passing that Stesimbrotus' version of Themistocles' career was the target of Thucydides' criticism (1.20.1) of his fellow Athenians for their uncritical acceptance (even in the case of their own history) of the oral traditions passed on to them, and may also have prompted his own digression on Themistocles ... • Crowns, Garlands, and Ribbons for Tony Podlecki: Official and Unofficial
Victory Rituals at the Athenian Dionysian Festivals
    • Abstract: Unlike sport, where victory was normally manifest to all at the moment of its achievement, choral victory was only known once the official herald announced the results of the judges' votes.1 This probably followed directly upon a counting of votes at the end of each particular contest, but the best evidence that I can adduce for the close timing between judgment and announcement comes from the contests instituted by Alexander in Tyre. Plutarch tells us, "he [Alexander] showed no favouritism before [the tragic actor] Athenodoros was announced winner by the votes, then apparently as he left he said he approved of the judges, but he himself would happily have given up half his kingdom not to see Thessalos beaten" ... • Gorging on Prodicus: Prodicus of Ceos, Cleon, and Aristophanes' Acharnians
    • Abstract: The sophist Prodicus came from Ioulis on the small island of Ceos situated in the Cyclades. Like Gorgias, he made his first impression on the Athenian public through diplomatic efforts on behalf of his native community. Both Plato and Philostratus indicate that on one particular occasion Prodicus created quite a stir when he addressed the Athenian Council.1 In the Hippias Major (282c: D-K 84 A3: 8 M), Socrates indicates that this was not Prodicus' first visit; he had often frequented Athens on public business. But on this occasion, he gained considerable notoriety by addressing the Council and giving public displays (epideixeis). This must be the occasion that Philostratus (VS 1.12: D-K 84 A1a: 10 & 82 M) had in ... Read More
