  • Introduction to “Aryballos I: Studies in Honour of Nigel B.
           Crowther”
    • Abstract: This is the first publication project of Aryballos: Canadian Research Group for Ancient Sport (ancientsport.wordpress.com). The group was formed in 2014 after a conference celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Austrian journal Nikephoros, the journal of record for ancient sport, where the founding members of Aryballos met and planned future collaborations. These were Reyes Bertolín Cebrián, who served as president of Aryballos from 2014 to 2018; Peter Miller, who serves as president currently; myself, who served as Secretary from 2014 to 2017; Jonathan Vickers, who serves as Secretary currently; Mark Golden; and Charles Stocking. Since 2014, many other Canadian and international scholars have joined the ... Read More

  • Laudatio for Nigel Crowther
    • Abstract: When I came to Canada 20 years ago, I was very impressed with the high level of scholarship on ancient sport in this country. Canadian scholars were pioneering in what was then a relatively new area of study. Now, the study of ancient sport is consolidated internationally, but also especially among Canadian classics programs, where it has become a source of constant growth. Courses on Greek and Roman sport are favourites for students of all backgrounds, and they often become a gateway to other classics courses. The percentage of scholars teaching and studying ancient sport in Canada is probably the highest among classicists in any country. This was clear at the 25th anniversary conference of the leading ancient ... Read More

  • Athlètes, Sports et Jeux sur les Monnaies Antiques
    • Abstract: La monnaie offre une documentation extrêmement variée. Read More

  • Slinking Home to Mother: Pindar on Losers (Pyth. 8.81–87)
    • Abstract: Nigel Crowther and I were colleagues for some 25 years before his retirement. In discussing our work, Nigel often expressed surprise that Pindarists have typically been little interested in the athletic competitions that prompted the poet’s epinician odes. There are reasons for this—and some of them will be considered below—but the point is a fair one, and it touches on the character of trends in literary interpretation. The emphasis on the rhetorical structure and function of the odes that dominated the interpretation of the poet for the latter part of the past century, commonly associated with the work of Elroy Bundy, has tended to turn attention away from matters of history and society.1 More recently, however ... • Horse and Herald: Posidippus’ Equestrian Angelia
    • Abstract: Posidippus’ oeuvre1 was extended by the 2001 publication of the Milan Papyrus, a roll containing dozens of new poems.2 These short epigrams were divided, whether by the poet himself or a compiler in his lifetime, into categories with headings.3 Here, I look at the Hippika, a series of epigrams written for Panhellenic victors, and I contextualize them in the mode of athletic praise poetry: that is, I consider Posidippus as a poet whose poems evoke the herald’s proclamation (or angelia)—the victor’s name, father’s name, event, and age group—but also modify the proclamation for rhetorical and ideological effect.4 Posidippus’ epigrams therefore provide a compelling lens through which to analyze the representation of ... • Breeding Success: The Creation of the Racehorse in Antiquity
    • Abstract: Equestrian events were a standard component of athletic competitions in the ancient world. The tradition of chariot racing dates to at least the eight century and is found in the epic cycles; most notable is the race at the funeral games for Patroclus in the Iliad.1 Chariot racing is closely tied to the mythical origins of the Olympic games, but the first equestrian event did not make it onto the program until the 25th Olympiad in 680, when the tethrippon was added. From this point on, racehorses were a regular fixture at the games with additional events for both driven and ridden horses being added in subsequent years. Indeed, equestrian competition became a standard component not only of the Panhellenic and ... Read More

  • Equestrian Acrobatics in Archaic Greece
    • Abstract: Within the first few weeks of many survey courses on ancient sport, the Minoan activity of bull-leaping rears its head, and immediately presents to students a challenge: do depictions of figures on or over the bull intimate a sportive or nonsportive pursuit'1 Opinions will inevitably differ, and an instructor might point out connections to modern bullfighting or rodeos, and stress the importance of evaluating something as “sport” (or not) on the basis of the attitudes and classifications of its parent culture. Even then, a communis opinio can be difficult to wrangle; cultural definitions of sport can be vague and complex, and despite their athleticism the matador and cowboy are not conventional athletes to many. ... • On Olympic Victors, Ancient and Modern
    • Abstract: On 12 August 2016, the National Public Radio program All Things Considered opened as follows: “Step Aside, Leonidas: Michael Phelps Breaks 2,000-Year-Old Olympic Record. Leonidas of Rhodes, please step aside for Michael of Baltimore. Swimmer Michael Phelps broke a 2,168-year-old record with his 13th individual Olympic title Thursday night.”1 This extraordinary accomplishment placed Michael Phelps in the position of the “winningest,” the athlete who achieved the most wins in the history of the Olympic games.2 With his 13 individual and nine relay gold medals (not to mention his three silver and two bronze medals), Michael Phelps thus became the most accomplished Olympic victor (Olympionikēs), ancient or modern. ... • Ayia Sotira. A Mycenaean Chamber Tomb Cemetery in the Nemea Valley, Greece
by R.A.K. Smith et al. (review)
    • Abstract: This monograph presents the results of excavations at the Late Bronze Age chamber tomb cemetery at Ayia Sotira in Greece’s Nemea Valley. Investigations were prompted by illegal digging at the site in 2002. The Fourth Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities subsequently excavated one tomb, Tomb 1. Three additional seasons of fieldwork followed (2006–2008), which identified the extent of the chamber tomb cemetery and brought five more chamber tombs, Tombs 2–6, to complete excavation. Although quite modest in finds, the chamber tombs yielded a wealth of evidence for Mycenaean mortuary practices and rituals. This was made possible by very careful excavation methods and the inclusion of archaeological ... Read More

  • The Lost Plays of Greek Tragedy. Volume 1: Neglected Authors by Matthew
           Wright (review)
    • Abstract: Matthew Wright’s study makes a distinctive contribution to the extensively researched field of Greek tragedy by providing a comprehensive diachronic analysis of a particular category: lost playwrights and their works. Of the hundreds of plays produced in Athens from the last third of the sixth century bc to the outset of the Hellenistic period, nothing remains but meagre fragments, most in the form of maxims, proverbial expressions, and gnomic pronouncements. This material has previously received limited scholarly attention, conspicuously focused on philological examination of individual fragments and playwrights and discussions on specific topics.Throughout the volume, Wright meticulously and cautiously endeavours ... • Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Alexander the Great ed. by
           K.R. Moore (review)
    • Abstract: Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth1 in every subsequent age, from his day to today. Even before his death, lingering impressions of the conqueror were imprinted on nearly every land known to the ancient Greeks and Macedonians. In the centuries after his death, Alexander’s ever-evolving fantastic adventures, from his explorations of the heavens to his venture to the depths of the sea, spread by means of the transcription of his romance Nachleben into countless languages to many cultures that he himself never experienced. He is identified (with some dispute) in the Qur’an and the Book of Daniel. He passes through the Middle Ages in the works of Dante, Petrarch, and Machiavelli and into the ... Read More

  • Callimachus by Richard Rawles (review)
    • Abstract: This new study of Callimachus belongs in the series Ancients in Action, which is described (online) as providing “short and accessible introductions to major figures of the ancient world, depicting the essentials of each subject’s life and significance for later western civilization.” Accessibility here means that all Greek is offered in English translation (the author’s own); where Greek words are used they are translated immediately. There are four chapters plus an Introduction and Envoi, and suggestions for further reading at the end of each. The Introduction having overviewed the poet’s life and oeuvre and introduced the main works to be discussed, the first chapter is on Callimachus, Philology, and Poetics. Its ... Read More

  • Birds in the Ancient World: Winged Words by Jeremy Mynott (review)
    • Abstract: With his Birds in the Ancient World, Jeremy Mynott joins the likes of Sir D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson, John Pollard, and W. Geoffrey Arnott, all British scholars whose love of classics and passion for birding produced important contributions to classical ornithology.1 While Thompson’s and Arnott’s are essentially reference works, Pollard’s is closest to Mynott’s, in that both are arranged thematically. But four decades have passed since Pollard, allowing Mynott to take advantage of the fairly large body of ornithological scholarship since then. He also includes a wide selection of translations from the ancient sources (over 120 classical authors, all newly translated) and supplies 95 colour illustrations, making this ... Read More

  • Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion by Jörg Rüpke (review)
    • Abstract: Jörg Rüpke’s Pantheon, originally published in German (Munich: Verlag C.H. Beck oHG, 2016), chronicles the history of Roman religion from the Bronze Age to the Late Empire. Attention centres on Rome and its environs, though Rüpke takes some detours. What sets Rüpke’s work apart from traditional studies of Roman religion is his framing, the selection of evidence he emphasizes, his defamiliarizing language, and the overall interpretive approach. This is a lived religion approach to Roman religion. The book does not provide much space describing the approach, its history and contributions, and its critics. An orientation to Rüpke’s collaborative project at the Max Weber Center at the University of Erfurt can be found ... Read More
