  • Men, Women, and Wine: A Gender-Based Analysis of Lucanian Necropoleis
    • Abstract: Despite the interest that historians and archaeologists have been taking in Italic populations and their material culture, gender as an analytical category has not received sufficient attention, and in this respect ancient Lucania is an area of interest and insight (Figure 1). In the last decades, this part of southern Italy has become the subject of archaeological research programs that have greatly increased our knowledge of the material manifestations of Lucanian society.Archaeological evidence provides us with an image of Lucanian society as a hierarchical and socially stratified entity, having its political base in elite families who formed a sort of “oligarchy.” Such social stratification is evidenced at an ... • Prediction, Probability, and Pessimism in Thucydides
    • Abstract: Many years ago, a basic division among scholars on the question of Thucydides’ outlook was described as follows: “the optimistic view holds that Thucydides wished to formulate general laws of human behaviour which were to enable a future statesman to do his job better. The pessimistic holds that while Thucydides was interested in revealing permanent aspects of the human condition, he did not feel that the suffering and destruction in which his History so largely consists … could be avoided in the future.”1 Many distinguished Thucydides scholars have held the pessimistic view, and the reason seems to concern the question of whether or not, or the degree to which, prediction is possible in Thucydides, given the ... • Aristotle’s Theory of Metaphor Revisited
    • Abstract: This essay aims to reconstruct Aristotle’s theory of metaphor as it emerges in the Poetics, Rhetoric, and other relevant texts, and to show in what ways recent evaluations of this theory have either succeeded or failed in isolating its main features. In fact, philosophical interest in the general question of metaphor is relatively new, born out of what is commonly referred to as the Linguistic Turn in twentieth-century thought. More or less the same thing can be said of the attention paid to Aristotle’s theory of metaphor in particular, insofar as it was only after the topic of metaphor began to receive serious consideration in a number of theoretical disciplines in the twentieth century (psychoanalysis, literary ... • Polygnotos’ Cuirasses in the Iliupersis: A Study of the Representation
of the Past in Fifth-Century bce Greek Art
    • Abstract: Perhaps the most famous of lost ancient paintings are Polygnotos of Thasos’ murals for the Cnidian λέσχη (clubhouse) at Delphi.1 Though never seen by modern eyes, these celebrated paintings were preserved for posterity through Pausanias’ famous account in his tenth book of the Description of Greece.2 These two paintings, as attested by Pausanias, depicted mythological scenes: the Iliupersis (Troy Taken) and the Nekyia (Odysseus’ Descent to the Underworld). One element that stands out in the verbal recreation of the Iliupersis is the meticulously detailed presentation of a bronze cuirass placed on an altar. Pausanias also mentions three other cuirasses, albeit more briefly–four cuirasses in total. The repeated ... Read More

  • Juvenal’s Appia de numero Lamiarum (6.385–397)
    • Abstract: In Juvenal’s Satire 6, the author’s tirade against marriage, the publication of which Gilbert Highet dates to around ad 1161, about two dozen women were specifically named and discussed as reasons men should reject the institution.2 Some of the women are well-known historical figures, such as the royal Tanaquil, the wife of Tarquin the Elder (6.566), or the late Republican Cornelia, the mother of the Gracchi (6.167). Besides those examples from a time long before Juvenal, we find in the catalogue the names of two empresses from the first Imperial dynasty, Caesonia (6.616) and Agrippina (6.620), the final wives of Caligula and Claudius, respectively; Messalina, Claudius’ third wife, is not actually named, though the ... • Allusive Syme
    • Abstract: Any reader of Ronald Syme’s The Historia Augusta: A Call of Clarity will recognize mannerisms of style evident in his writings as a whole. Examples can be found on almost every page of trenchant alliteration, dramatic fragmentary sentences, pointed rhetorical questions, jussive assertions, and formulaic phrases that control the flow of argument. They draw, as always, on an enormously rich vocabulary that puts on display the archaic, the grandiose, and the recondite; and they combine to produce, as one commentator has expressed it, “a very readable reply to diehard defenders of the early date and multiple authorship” of the Historia Augusta.1 That is, a defence of Syme’s view, based on a proposal made much earlier ... • Athens, Thrace, and the Shaping of Athenian Leadership by Matthew A. Sears
           (review)
    • Abstract: Thrace, as a near neighbour of the Greeks, rarely is given the attention it deserves. Yet, as Matthew Sears (hereafter S.) has shown, from the archaic period the Greeks, and especially the Athenians, were very interested in the Thraceward region because of its mineral wealth (especially gold and silver), recruited mercenaries from among the Thracian tribes, understood the strategic importance of alliances with the Thracian kings, and were fascinated by the “barbaric” opulence of the Thracian royal courts.S.’s book comprises seven chapters. In the opening chapter, S. introduces the Athenian conceit of the thrakophoitai, the “Thrace-haunters” or “disciples of Thrace,” those Athenians, generally from among the elite ... Read More

  • Xerxes: A Persian Life by Richard Stoneman (review)
    • Abstract: Greek or Roman accounts of the lives of individual rulers of the Persian Empire in the Achaemenid period are few, and likewise modern accounts. However, from the year 2015 we have not one but two works whose subject is Xerxes, son and successor to Darius the Great. One is by Emma Bridges; the second and quite independent, the volume under review, by Richard Stoneman. This monarch, of course, from the fifth century bc onwards, has been viewed primarily as the arrogant ruler of the years 480 and 479, who failed conspicuously to overwhelm the courageous Greeks at Salamis and Plataea. Stoneman, however, deals, so far as is possible, with his entire career. In Chapter 1, then, he sketches what is known of the earlier ... Read More

  • Courage in the Democratic Polis: Ideology and Critique in Classical Athens
           by Ryan K. Balot (review)
    • Abstract: In this stimulating volume, Balot unpacks the ideology and practice of courage in democratic Athens. Balot contends that democracy fundamentally altered the Athenians’ view of courage. Instead of a virtue exercised through reverence for the laws or fear of shame, as was typical among, say, the Spartans, the democratic Athenians reconceived of courage as a virtue linked to practical reasoning, dependent upon vigorous and open public debate and reflection. Whether or not this new ideal of courage was demonstrated consistently in practice, it certainly influenced later philosophical formulations. Balot also tests the Athenian ideal against various critiques, ancient and modern, and wonders how the Athenians can inform ... Read More

  • Herodotus and Hellenistic Culture. Literary Studies in the Reception of
the Histories by Jessica Priestley (review)
    • Abstract: The title of Jessica Priestley’s monograph echoes Oswyn Murray’s influential discussion, published in 1972. That was presented modestly as a “preliminary study,” but its subtlety and wide-ranging scholarship appear to have discouraged further exploration on the lines there suggested. Priestley (hereafter P.), who has already made a useful contribution to Herodotean scholarship with a study of Herodotus’ use of tmesis (Priestley 2009), is to be congratulated on rising to the challenge.Within the temporal framework of a period stretching from the late fourth century to the mid-second, the material to be considered calls for a selective approach. The focus is strongly, but not exclusively, on Alexandria, and a wide ... Read More

  • Silence in Catullus by Benjamin Eldon Stevens (review)
    • Abstract: Benjamin Eldon Stevens asks us to see value in silence and to be willing to attend to its meaning by bringing silence to our attention as a paradoxically loud element of literary history. The main thesis of the book, in Stevens’ words, is to show that “Catullus’s interest in silence is an intentional and significant aspect of his poetics: we may say that Catullus has a ‘poetics of silence’” (ix), and then to explore the ways in which that “poetics of silence” shapes the poetry of Catullus and allows new or more developed interpretations of many of his poems. Stevens states that his intended audience ranges from scholars and advanced students of Catullus, of Latin and Latin poetry in general, and of silence to all ... Read More

  • Interconnectivity in the Mediterranean and Pontic World during the
Hellenistic and Roman Periods by Victor Cojocaru, Altay Coşkun, and
           Mădălina Dana (review)
    • Abstract: This volume presents the proceedings of the Interconnectivity Conference held in Constanta, Romania in July of 2013, an event which arose from a German and Romanian study group on the external relations of the Pontic cities in Greek and Roman times. Run for the purposes of fostering communication between Eastern and Western scholarship in memory of Professor Heinz Heinen, the conference featured 47 papers in German, French, and English. The organizers included 25 of these papers in the volume, adding one outside paper by F. Russo and including “the two opening addresses that were biographic and historiographic in nature” on the career of Heinen (by A. Coşkun) and the history of the “ideological confrontations” ... • The Material Life of Roman Slaves by Sandra R. Joshel and Lauren Hackworth
           Petersen (review)
    • Abstract: The Material Life of Roman Slaves is an imaginative and engaging project that aims to make slaves visible in the archaeological record, where modern scholarship has previously absented, overlooked, or forgotten them while focusing on the freeborn. The authors maintain that by reading the archaeological record carefully and critically, the experiences of slaves and not solely the perspectives of slaveholders can be recovered. They concentrate on archaeological evidence from Campania and Ostia, but interweave legal and literary texts, seeking to account for the complex relationship between these bodies of evidence, which do not always work in tandem. Each of the four main chapters explores the themes of visibility ... Read More

  • Greek Narratives of the Roman Empire under the Severans: Cassius Dio,
Philostratus and Herodian (Greek Culture in the Roman World) by Adam M.
           Kemezis (review)
    • Abstract: The transition from the Antonine dynasty to that of the Severans was a watershed moment in the history of the Roman Empire. While the reigns of Hadrian, Antoninus, and Marcus Aurelius had enjoyed at least the symbolic appearance of internal concord, the assassination of Commodus in the closing hours of ad 192 heralded a new era in which high politics was to become a turbulent and dangerous affair. It is into this context that Adam Kemezis steps, with a monograph building upon research undertaken during his doctorate.1 The primary focus of this book is the destruction of the High Imperial consensus view of the Empire and of Roman history and the consequent responses of the Severan regime and its contemporary ...
