  • The Aedes Aemiliana Herculis in the Forum Boarium: New Considerations
    • Abstract: Numerous scholarly articles and books have been published on the Forum Boarium, one of the most important areas of ancient Rome, but still there is some uncertainty with regard to its topography.1Today the temples of Portunus2 and Hercules Olivarius3 stand almost intact close to the Tiber River. Their preservation is due to the fact that both were turned into churches. The temple of Portunus became the church of S. Maria in Gradellis and then of S. Maria Aegyptiaca;4 the temple of Hercules Olivarius the church of S. Stefano Rotondo alle Carrozze and then of S. Maria del Sole.5During the papacy of Sixtus IV (1471–1484), remains of a circular building, destroyed soon thereafter, were discovered. An important source ... Read More

  • Philonicus Demetriusque: Craft Specialization in the Funerary Relief of
           Two Freedmen
    • Abstract: The importance of funerary reliefs and similar monuments for the study of Roman craftsmen and their professions is now well established. These monuments served to commemorate and memorialize the individual identities of a population that is otherwise poorly represented within the available evidence, if they are represented at all. For Roman craftsmen, much of their identity and status was tied to their particular trades and the skill with which they executed them, and so these professions were often displayed proudly and prominently upon their tombstones, resulting in an iconographic tradition of craft symbolism within Roman funerary monuments. Despite this tradition, funerary iconography was far from standardized ... Read More

  • UBC Excavations of the Roman Villa at Gerace, Sicily: Results of the 2017
           Season
    • Abstract: The site of the Roman villa in contrada Gerace, situated in well-watered and fertile agricultural land 10 km south of Enna (Figure 1), has been known since 1994. The University of British Columbia's involvement dates from 2012, when a geophysical survey was conducted.1 Since then three campaigns of excavation have taken place, in 2013 and 2015–2016.2 This paper outlines the principal results of the fourth UBC campaign of excavations at Gerace, which lasted for four weeks from 8th May to 4th June 2017, and which were carried out through a concessione di scavo generously granted by the Regione Siciliana and with the full support and collaboration of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Culturali di Enna. The setting of the ... • Fieldwork of the Canadian Institute in Greece in 2016
    • Abstract: For the fifteenth consecutive year, the Director has benefited from the opportunity to present a condensed version of the Institute's annual Open Meeting report so that the archaeological fieldwork conducted under the Institute's auspices in 2016 can be made available especially for Canadian readers. The Institute's research activities (see Figure 1) included three cooperative excavations (ancient Eleon in Eastern Boeotia, ancient Argilos in Macedonia, and Stelida on Naxos), one independent intensive survey (the Western Argolid Regional Project in the Argolid), and a formal study season (Kastro Kallithea in Thessaly).Map of the Aegean Basin with the locations of the field and study seasons of the 2016 CIG permit ... • Two Studies in the History of Ancient Greek Athletics by Thomas Heine
           Nielsen (review)
    • Abstract: A number of sporting idioms come to mind for Thomas Heine Nielsen's Two Studies in the History of Ancient Greek Athletics: "a slam dunk," "out of the park," "a knockout," etc. To cut to the chase (although I break the idiomatic theme), Nielsen's monograph is generally excellent and eminently useful, a trove of information and a welcome addition to scholarship on Archaic and Classical Greek athletics. As the title declares, it is divided into two studies: first, "A Survey of the Proliferation of Athletic and Equestrian Competitions in Late Archaic and Classical Greece," and second, "The Prestige of a Nemean Victory." The first section seeks to estimate how many athletic festivals aside from the "Big Four" (a.k.a. ... Read More

  • Sophocles: A Study of his Theater in its Political and Social Context by
           Jacques Jouanna (review)
    • Abstract: Sophocles: A Study of His Theater in Its Political and Social Context— lucidly translated by Steven Rendall—is the new English-language version of Jacques Jouanna's encyclopaedic resource on Sophoclean drama.1 It begins with several chapters exploring the ancient sources for the life of Sophocles and for the Athens in which he lived. The remainder of the book turns to the plays themselves, not proceeding drama by drama, but rather exploring expansive themes pertaining to tragedy as a genre: "The Mythic Imagination," "Space and Spectacle," "Time and Action," and so forth. These chapters use the Sophoclean corpus as a source of illustrative examples and collectively paint the context in which Sophoclean tragedy ... Read More

  • The Athenian Constitution Written in the School of Aristotle by P.J.
           Rhodes (review)
    • Abstract: The Athenian Constitution contains the most detailed description we have of how Athenian democracy worked on a day-to-day basis, not to mention one of our most detailed run-throughs of Athenian constitutional history. It is also the only text that survives from the great series of 158 polis constitutions compiled in the Lyceum in the late fourth century bc.For almost forty years now, anyone who has wanted to know anything about this important work has turned to P.J. Rhodes' monumental commentary.1 If Rhodes' original commentary had any limitation, it was its sheer completeness: the volume could be forbidding, even to advanced students of the period. While I was doing my Ph.D., I used to meet a friend (also a Greek ... Read More

  • Le libérateur de la Grèce. Titus Flamininus et l'héritage
           hellénistique by Pierre-Luc Brisson (review)
    • Abstract: The young scholar Pierre-Luc Brisson offers, in this monograph, an insightful reassessment of the career and personality of T. Quinctius Flamininus—the conqueror of Philip V of Macedon and the celebrated promotor of Greek liberty—and, through Flamininus' military and diplomatic achievements, a lucid analysis of contemporary Roman policy in Greece. Brisson's study is divided into three parts, preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion, covering the years between 208 bc (the beginning of Flamininus' career) and 194 bc (when the Roman troops under his command left Greece). Brisson seeks to demonstrate that Flamininus was neither a secondary figure of his age (5) nor merely an aristocrat enamoured of ... Read More

  • Ovid's Homer: Authority, Repetition, and Reception by Barbara Weiden Boyd
           (review)
    • Abstract: This volume promises to fill a significant gap in Ovidian studies by systematically analyzing the poet's intertextual relations with Homer. The Homeric resonances are traced throughout his corpus and considered from a variety of viewpoints. Scholars including Weiden Boyd (2012, 2015, 2016; hereafter BWB) have taken on fragments of this larger project, but this is the first book-length treatment of the topic. The book begins with the centrality of Homer to Greek and Roman literature and those who study it: "it might be said with at least some accuracy that all classicists are engaged in Homeric studies" (ix). The introduction reviews the long history of studying Ovid's intertextual relationships, especially with ... Read More

  • Accounts of Northern Barbarians in Tacitus' Annales: A Contextual Analysis
           by Aske Damtoft Poulsen (review)
    • Abstract: A published dissertation, this book provides in-depth literary analyses of three Tacitean accounts of resistance to Rome. After an opening chapter devoted to the study's methodology and a review of pertinent scholarship come discussions of Arminius' campaigns in Germania early in the principate of Tiberius (Ann. 1.58–59, 2.14–15, 2.44–46, 2.88), the Thracian revolt of ad 26 (4.46–51), and the uprising led by Boudicca in Britain under Nero (14.29–39). The volume ends with a brief epilogue of conclusions and suggestions for further study. The glue that holds the work together is the concept of the "northern barbarian," but only some of the potentially relevant Tacitean material is brought into play here: works other ...
