  • Acknowledgments/Remerciements
    • Abstract: The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at a conference entitled "Moralizing Strategies in Early Greek Poetry," held at Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland in July 2015. We are grateful to the Department of Classics at Memorial for their kind hospitality, and particularly to Professor Brad Levett, then Editor of Mouseion, for inviting us to hold the event in the first place, and to both him and Mrs. Cathy Kieley, the department's administrative assistant, for their generous help in organizing it. It was a great pleasure to discuss the participants' ideas and to enjoy their company, and we thank them for their contributions both to the conference and to the volume that followed. ... Read More

  • Introduction to "Moralizing Strategies in Early Greek Poetry"
    • Abstract: Moralizing, in the sense both of didactic advice and of reflection on received wisdom, is a prevalent feature of ancient Greek literature. Didactic poetry was a long-established genre, first known to us from Hesiod, though with much older roots, but elements of didacticism are important to small-scale non-hexameter poetry, whose performance function is often explicitly to guide or advise its audience. The symposium, for example, encouraged reflection on shared values as a mechanism for bonding the hetaireia, and some surviving sympotic poetry (most notably the Theognidea) contains overt advice on issues such as friendship and politics. Yet moralizing strategies are found in poetry whose aim is not simply to tell ... Read More

  • Narrative, Authority, and Blame
    • Abstract: With only very rare exceptions, such as the work song, there is no such thing as private poetry in archaic and classical Greece.1 The late development of reading as a platform for engaging with poetic texts means that poetry is produced for and performed (and in most cases reperformed) within a social context, either sung or recited, depending on the form. What changes is the size and structure of the group and the nature of the occasion, not the embeddedness of song; it is simply more or less public. This is more than a matter of context. The constant presence of a public, large or small, is not just a text-external fact, since the audience (human or divine) is not a passive presence. It is in a real sense part of ... Read More

  • Picturing a Truth: Beast Fable, Early Iambos, and Semonides on the
           Creation of Women
    • Abstract: This article arose from some long-standing uncertainty about the long poem by Semonides of Amorgos on women.1 There has been considerable interest in defining ἴαμβος as a genre, with Archilochus as both its first-known and best-known exponent.2 For many invective was a defining characteristic of the genre. Archilochus' campaign against Lycambes and his daughters was famous in antiquity and is reasonably well attested among the extant fragments. There is similar evidence for Hipponax's poems against Bupalus and Athenis. Semonides' poem on women (fr. 7W) is the longest surviving specimen of early ἴαμβος. Despite its length, however, the poem remains elusive, and its generic affiliations with the tradition associated ... Read More

  • Agamben, "Bare Life," and Archaic Greek Poetry
    • Abstract: To articulate what is past does not mean to recognize "how it really was." It means to seize hold of a memory, as it flashes up at a moment of danger. The following pages demonstrate one way that moralizing strategies found in archaic Greek poetry can participate in modern ethical debates through the influential biopolitical theory of Giorgio Agamben. In some sense, this is a work of reception studies, though my ultimate point will be situated historically: whereas Agamben builds his theory of "bare life" upon a foundation of Aristotelian philosophy, the earliest Greek evidence for such an idea emerges from the world of archaic narrative. That is, biopolitical theory, the school of thought most closely associated ... Read More

  • Thinking with Brothers in Sappho and Beyond
    • Abstract: The steady stream of discoveries in Greek lyric continually challenges our beliefs about what is typical about a genre or an author. This is particularly true in the case of Sappho, a poet whose work since antiquity has been most strongly associated with erotic or hymeneal themes.1 The publication of the newest fragment of Sappho, known as the "Brothers Poem" (P. Sapph. Obbink 1-20), reminds us that she is also a poet who has much to say on archaic morality It has long been known that Sappho wrote poems about her family, even if few remnants survived, but these themes have been relatively neglected. The new discovery not only is fascinating in its own right, but also helps us to reframe Sappho's work and focus on ... Read More

    • Abstract: Archaic lyric poetry is a polyvalent phenomenon. In addition to its panoply of metres, dialects, first-person personae, audiences, performance contexts, and topics, its composers employ a variety of poetic and rhetorical strategies in the service of their equally diverse purposes. The tendency of lyric to offer moral advice, in particular, reveals this inherent diversity and polyvalence: though the gnomic sentiments of poetic paraenesis range from the conventional to the trite, their articulation is contrastingly complex. By recourse to exempla such as similes, fables, allegory, or mythological paradigms, poets introduce comparanda that not only encourage a broader interpretive perspective, but also, by frequently ... • Solon and the Rhetoric of Stasis
    • Abstract: We cannot separate "Solon the poet" from "Solon the politician," and the role of the poet as a public figure in archaic Greece is nowhere clearer than with him. As archon in 594/593 bc, Solon introduced reforms that affected almost every area of the Athenian state, and later tradition celebrated him as a wandering wise man, one of the Seven Sages. Solon's reputation for wisdom and moderation1 led Herodotus, for example, to depict his encounter in Sardis with Croesus, king of Lydia, who fatally ignores Solon's reflections on the dangers of excessive wealth and the uncertainty of human life.2The egalitarian thrust of Solon's legal, economic, and political reforms make him a key figure in the development of democracy ... • A Sympotic Self: Instruction through Inebriation in Anacreon
    • Abstract: "I do not like the man who while drinking his wine beside the full mixingbowl talks of strife and tearful war" (οὐ φιλέω ὃς κρητῆρι παρὰ πλέῳ οἰνοποτάζων/νείκεα καὶ πόλεμον δακρυόεντα λέγει) states the speaker of Anacreons second elegy (2.1-2 W); rather, the speaker prefers to mix love, song, and the "loveliness of the feast" (2.3-4 W).1 This passage is a prime example of a sympotic commonplace, talking about the symposium or metasympotic discourse.2 Metasympotic discourse deals with more than simply the appropriate table settings, proportion of water to wine, and content of the symposium: considering the symposium's central place in archaic and early classical social and political culture, the drinking party acted ... • Diet, Economy and Society in the Ancient Greek World: Towards a Better
Integration of Archaeology and Science ed. by Sofia Voutsaki and Soultana
           Maria Valamoti (review)
    • Abstract: The present volume is a collection of the papers presented at a conference on diet, economy, and society in the ancient world, organized by the Netherlands Institute in Athens in collaboration with the Hellenic Society for Archaeometry in March 2010.The papers collected here share a common aim, which is to set out the use and the improvement of various archaeological and scientific methods that will allow us to reconstruct and shine light on dietary habits, and especially the role of food in social interaction, in Ancient Greece. Some of the methods described by the authors are the study of animal, plant, and human remains, stable isotope analysis, dental microwear analysis, and the analysis of organic residues in ... • The Genesis of Roman Architecture by John North Hopkins (review)
    • Abstract: The subject of Hopkins' work is the history of Roman architecture from the eighth century bc through the Archaic age down to the Early Republic, thus fitting into a wave of recent scholarship on the earliest phases of Roman art and architecture. As the author explains in the Introduction, "the majority of research on Roman visual culture begins only with the middle Republic" (1). His work therefore crosses "that traditional Roman barrier in the study of Roman art and architecture" (2) and offers a detailed and innovative account of the earliest monuments and urban development of Rome. As Hopkins says, one of the main objectives of his book is "to promote a conversation about the long-overlooked role that archaic ... Read More

  • Topos. Les premières méthodes d'argumentation dans la rhétorique
grecque des Ve–IVe siècles by Camille Rambourg (review)
    • Abstract: Aristotle famously describes the enthymeme as "the body of proof" and thus the central concept of his rhetorical theory. In doing so, he relies on his own technical definition of enthymeme as a rhetorical syllogism, thus clarifying rhetoric's role for him as a counterpoint of dialectic. Much scholarly attention has recently been devoted to his very fruitful ideas of entechnic and atechnic proofs, his elaborate descriptions of emotions and character, and his penetrating analyses of metaphor. Less attention has been given to his treatment of his central concept of argumentation, especially in Rh. 2.23, which might arguably be understood as the best primer in critical thinking a student could hope for. Rather than ... Read More

  • Roman Portable Sundials: The Empire in Your Hand by Richard Talbert
           (review)
    • Abstract: Throughout antiquity and until the first mechanical clocks were invented in the early Renaissance, sundials were the most prevalent time-telling devices. However, despite their role in the everyday life of the ancients, the study of these fascinating instruments has received minimal attention. It will come as a surprise to many to learn about the existence, in Roman times, of sundials small enough to be carried around. The sole surviving reference to such portable devices comes from Vitruvius, who briefly mentions portable sundials in his discussion of various dials and their inventors in Book 9 of De Architectura (9.8.1). Lack of more evidence restricts our knowledge, but even so, it is safe to assume that ... Read More

  • A Reading of Samuel Johnson's by Patrick O'Flaherty (review)
    • Abstract: Why, at the age of 76, after retiring from teaching at the age of 55, did Professor Patrick O'Flaherty choose to publish a detailed "reading" of Samuel Johnson's poem, The Vanity of Human Wishes. The Tenth Satire of Juvenal Imitated (1749)' He began his academic career in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a scholar of eighteenth-century English literature, writing several articles on Samuel Johnson in reputable journals. As his academic career progressed, he made an important contribution to the literary history of Newfoundland in The Rock Observed (1980), recently described as a "foundational book in Newfoundland studies," and then wrote a trilogy of books on Newfoundland's history, published in 1999, 2005, and ... • Classical Traditions in Modern Fantasy by Brett M. Rogers and Benjamin
           Eldon Stevens (review)
    • Abstract: Here we have a follow-up to Rogers and Stevens' Classical Traditions in Science Fiction (CTSF). That volume (which included a contribution from this reviewer), explored the seemingly antipodal worlds of antiquity and science fiction. In their introduction, Rogers and Stevens posited a model whereby Classics and science fiction are "'knowledge fictions' that place demands upon the reader to supply additional knowledge" (CTSF 18). The critic thus not only considers sites of classical reception in science fiction, but may also use science fiction as a cognitive model to explore the classical past. Contributions covered science fiction staples from the literary (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Frankenstein, A ... Read More
