  • An Approach for Analysing State-Society Relations in Vietnam
    • Abstract: Vietnam's leaders say the government is "of the people, for the people, and by the people". Yet the country's political system has only one political party, the Communist Party. Elections typically have only candidates approved by that party. Tight restrictions make very difficult the formation of any organization or the establishment of any publication that criticizes the Communist Party's domination of the political system. In such a system, what is the relationship between the rulers and the ruled, the authorities and "the people"' Secondly, what is being said and debated in the country about what those relationships should be' This article offers an approach to analysing such questions. It uses three ... Read More

  • Space, Theory, and Hegemony: The Dual Crises of Asian Area Studies and
           Cultural Studies
    • Abstract: In recent decades, the classical form of area studies based on the notion of culture-language areas has been critiqued from several directions. The origins of Asian area studies in the post–World War II carve up of the planet between competing Soviet and American empires has made the enterprise politically suspect, especially in cultural studies circles. With their analytical sights set on intensifying cross-border flows of finance, information, and people, globalization theorists have questioned the geographical isolation and distinctiveness of the different cultures that area studies sought to understand. Deconstructionists draw upon poststructuralist theories of the inter-dependence of discursively constituted ... Read More

  • Globalizing Local Knowledge: Social Science Research on Southeast Asia,
           1970–2000
    • Abstract: Southeast Asian academics, observing the development of the social sciences in Southeast Asia, have bemoaned the "academic dependency" on North American and European scholarship (Alatas 2000). They have pointed out that because of the power of Western scholars and institutions, the research agenda was largely set elsewhere rather than in Southeast Asia itself (Hadiz and Dhakidae 2005). On the other hand, a number of local Southeast Asian scholars have been influential in fuelling the intellectual debate in and on their own countries, acting as opinion leaders and producing good academic studies that were locally and internationally recognized. The issue raised here has important implications for the social and ... • Working in the Islamic Economy: Shariaization and the Malaysian Workplace
    • Abstract: In the white-collar world of Malaysia's confident, globally oriented Islamic economy, sharia compliance has created vigorous new businesses and products. Sharia has also emerged as a novel form of corporate culture, reconfiguring workplace identities and relations in distinctly Islamic ways. Exploring the sharia premises and practices that have been institutionalized in some Malaysian work lives can provide some understanding of what could be called the shariaization of the Malaysian workplace. This article explores the experiences of differently placed people who work in Malaysia's Islamic economy, ranging from chief executive officers to managers, clerks, and messengers.1 They work in Islamic banks and insurance ... • Editors' Note
    • Abstract: With the publication of this supplementary issue of SOJOURN, the Regional Social and Cultural Studies Programme of the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute's establishment. In preparing this issue, SOJOURN's editorial team has selected nine previously published articles relating to the theme, "Approaches to Researching Southeast Asia". If the sheer number of excellent articles that had appeared in the journal made the selection process challenging, the choice of who would write the introduction to these articles was immediately obvious to us. Professor Barbara Andaya is an established and respected senior scholar working on Southeast Asia, one well acquainted with ... Read More

           in Southeast Asian Studies
    • Abstract: This special anniversary issue of SOJOURN celebrates over thirty years of high-level scholarship that has opened up new ways of approaching Southeast Asia, both as a region and from the viewpoint of individual countries. When introducing the first issue of the journal in February 1986, the then Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, the late Professor Kernial Singh Sandhu, underscored his rejection of the theory that global forces would eventually lead to cultural homogenization and the blurring (or even disappearance) of national boundaries. This did not mean, of course, that Professor Sandhu and his colleagues had underestimated the pace of change or the extent to which Southeast Asia had been ... Read More

  • Pigtail: A Pre-History of Chineseness in Siam
    • Abstract: HANGPIA is the hair on a jek's head which is shaven off except at the occiput into a round shape like a cake of brown sugar cane, and is then plaited into a long tail.Growing up in a Teochew community in Bangkok during the 1960s, I came to learn about my non-Thai ethnic identity primarily through the Teochew dialect. It is a dialect in which claims of the following kind were heard: "We are Tung Nang who came from Tung Sua to Hsien Lo or Mang Kok". On almost every occasion when cordial family conversations took place, my father, who emigrated to Thailand from Kwangtung (Guangdong) province in the 1930s and, till this day, still speaks only a few mostly abusive Thai words, never tired of urging me and my brothers to ... • Internal Colonialism in the Central Highlands of Vietnam
    • Abstract: There are two main upland minority areas in Vietnam: one is on the northern border extending to the northwest of the country. Here the highlands are dominated by various "tribal" Tai groups, along with Hmong, Yao, and various Mon-Khmer speaking peoples. Most of these groups, except for the Mon-Khmer, were "invaders" from China and in that sense non-indigenous minorities. Along with considerations of space, this is one reason the northern highlanders will not be dealt with in this paper. The people of the Central Highlands, however, more properly fit the term indigenous peoples. They are commonly acknowledged to be original inhabitants of the southern mountain regions. Generally, Austronesian or Mon-Khmer speakers ... Read More

  • The Singapore Way of Multiculturalism: Western Concepts/Asian Cultures
    • Abstract: Like the other successful "dragons" of East Asia, Singapore has become interesting for the West — and here we do not have the time to nuance and qualify our use of the term "West" — mainly for reasons of economic self-interest. As the Asia-Pacific region is set to become the main site of global economic activity and wealth in the next century, the old, Western heartlands of modern capitalism are now eager to do business in this region and to exploit its booming markets. This shift in relations of economic power is being accompanied by a shift in geo-cultural relations. The impressive economic ascendancy of the nation-states of East and Southeast Asia, the most successful of which has been Japan, has led to a ... Read More

  • Ritual Passage and the Reconstruction of Selfhood in International Labour
           Migration
    • Abstract: The immigration card used by the Philippines is probably unique in containing a section where Filipino international labour migrants are asked to indicate their Overseas Contract Worker Number as given to them by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA). Although many such workers are devoid of proper documentation and so do not possess a serial number, overseas employment as an activity has been subsumed nonetheless under the serializing function of the state. The Philippine embarkation card is thus emblematic of the routinization of international labour migration. At the global level, the large-scale flows of migrant workers in a global ethnoscape are regularized by a complex set of international ... Read More

  • State and Civil Society: Global Context, Southeast Asian Prospect
    • Abstract: Ours is a world of nation-states, and it seems likely to remain one. The more integrated, interdependent, and even culturally homogenized our world becomes, the more we are at the same time impelled to assert and elaborate our own particularity, our distinctive sub-global collective identities. There is no contradiction here, only a process constituted (like systole and diastole) from two opposite yet interacting, even mutually sustaining, impulses. Indeed, the more emphatically global society is constituted as a world of nation-states, the greater is the pressure on all societies, even the most peripheral and hitherto marginal in world-historical terms, to organize themselves on that national basis and to commit ...
