  • Introduction
    • Abstract: Within library and information science (LIS), the study of information behavior has traditionally focused on documentary sources of information and to some degree information that is shared through interaction.1 Such an emphasis reflects the origins of the whole field in the study of the information behavior of users of libraries and other institutions that provide access to encoded forms of knowledge. Yet the centrality of embodied experience in all aspects of human life makes the relative neglect of the body in information behavior studies surprising and potentially problematic, as a number of authors have suggested (Cox, Griffin, and Hartel 2017; Lueg 2014, 2015; Lloyd 2009, 2010, 2014; Olsson, 2010, 2016). • Embodied Knowledge and Sensory Information: Theoretical Roots and
           Inspirations
    • Abstract: In the 1980s and 1990s in a number of academic disciplines, such as sociology, geography, history, and anthropology, it began to be recognized that the body had been neglected and undertheorized (Shilling 2007; Pink 2015; Howes 2013b). This neglect seemed to reflect the longstanding Cartesian mind-body dualism in Western culture that privileges thought over the supposedly separate and lower functions of the body. Such a depreciation of the body must also reflect the influence of strands in Christianity that tend to view the body as base and sinful. These assumptions could also be seen as shaping the way that in information studies (IS) we have generally privileged textual information and rationalistic approaches ... Read More

  • Concepts for the Study of Information Embodiment
    • Abstract: I am grateful to the editors of these issues on information and the body for making me aware of the topic, and welcoming my contribution to it. In this article, I initially set out to demonstrate the ready applicability of the several information concepts I had developed in an earlier article (Bates [2006] 2016) to the content of these issues. I had written about information with the objective of finding a foundational conceptualization of information that could be used as a basis for theory and thinking in the field (see also Bates 2005). For these Library Trends issues, I wrote an initial draft focusing on demonstrating how the concepts I had introduced earlier related to the consideration of information and the ... Read More

  • Habituated: A Merleau-Pontian Analysis of the Smartphone
    • Abstract: Over the last decade, there has been a great deal written in library and information science (LIS), education, and related fields on how the increasing prevalence of mobile devices has changed the way people, particularly teenagers and young adults, consume and interact with information. Hyperconnectedness to information via our mobile devices is often heralded as a positive development that libraries should embrace. In this paper, we challenge this general sentiment. Although increased information access offers considerable advantages, we need to operate from a fuller understanding of the way in which that information is accessed, as well as the unintended, often unseen, effects of this method of access. This ... Read More

  • “You Have to Know Your Body!”: The Role of the Body in Influencing the
Information Behaviors of People with Type 2 Diabetes
    • Abstract: The burgeoning area of consumer health information behavior (CHIB) encompasses people’s health-related information needs as well as the activities they engage in (or not) to look for and use this information. CHIB is important as it has been found to influence people’s ability to cope with an illness (e.g., Ankem 2006), normalize their situation (Genuis and Bronstein 2017), and make informed decisions (e.g., Clark 2005), and to even impact their ultimate health outcomes (Longo et al. 2010). Although many CHIB studies have investigated the diverse set of information sources people draw on when faced with a potential or actual illness, very few such studies mention the important roles played by the body in people’s ... • The Construction of Lay Rescuers in Bystander CPR Classes
    • Abstract: While library and information studies (LIS) research has traditionally focused on textual information, or information in recorded forms, there are many situations in society and life in which the body is expected to play an important role in the acquisition of practical skills. This article reports on a study of such a situation, where information about how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid is mediated to nonmedical professionals. From an LIS point of view, the study of CPR instructing and bystander CPR may seem unexpected. Information and information-related activities do, however, play important parts in this practice as in so many other practices. The guidelines for how to carry out ... Read More

  • Understanding and Information Constellations in Ultrarunning
    • Abstract: And this long-distance running lark is the best of all, because it makes me think so good that I learn things even better than when I’m on my bed at night.Distance running is a fundamental human activity. It’s something we’ve done for at least two million years. In large part, it’s the reason our bodies look the way they do (Bramble and Lieberman 2004). For something so central to humanity, it’s interesting that running is often viewed as something purely physical—just a mechanical affair. In this paper, I seek to problematize that account of running, characterizing running instead as an information-rich and multimodal activity. I present a study that, first, documents some of the key information sources, needs ... Read More

  • Information Sharing as Embodied Practice in a Context of Conversion to
           Islam
    • Abstract: As Marcia Bates and others have observed, information is woven into our everyday lives (M. Bates 1974; M. Bates 1999; Cox 2012; Savolainen 2008). Research on information access, seeking, and representation in leisure settings, migration, healthcare, and the home has expanded information science beyond contexts such as schools and libraries, which continue to be focal points in the field (Allard 2015; Cox and Blake 2011; Dali 2013; Given et al. 2016; Gorichanaz 2015; Hartel 2010; Lloyd 2014a; Loudon, Buchanan, and Ruthven 2016; McKenzie 2010; Quirke 2015; Tinto and Ruthven 2016; Huvila 2013; Lloyd 2009; Molopyane and Fourie 2015; Pilerot 2016; Takhteyev 2012). Although religious practice is another important part ... Read More

  • Sensible Shopping: A Sensory Exploration of the Information Environment of
           the Grocery Store
    • Abstract: Few spaces exist where the sensory experience of information is more obvious than the grocery store—which may be why Lueg (2015) describes grocery shopping throughout his article on embodiment and information behavior research. Grocery stores are designed to appeal to all of a shopper’s senses. Shoppers are typically welcomed into stores with the smell of warm bakery bread and the bright colors of fresh produce (Figueroa 2014). The grocery store provides an ideal space to explore the sensory experience of information and the importance of the body’s impact on information behaviors. Although plenty of documentation and reading occurs in the grocery store, customers also see, smell, touch, and sometimes even taste ... Read More

  • Documents from Head to Toe: Bodies of Knowledge in the Works of Paul Otlet
           and Georges Bataille
    • Abstract: We believe that we think with our brain. But I think with my feet. It’s only there that I meet with something hard. I have seen enough electro-encephalograms to know that there is no shadow of a thought. The only research that I know of that addresses the works of the early to mid-twentieth century French librarian, philosopher, and social critic Georges Bataille (1897–1962) in regard to what we often refer to as European Documentation is that of an article by Isabelle Rieusset-Lemarié (1997).1 In her article, she contrasts Georges Bataille’s “acephalous” or headless politics with Paul Otlet’s (1868–1944) contemporaneous tendency toward monumentality (architectural and bibliographic) and the corresponding ...
