  • Introduction
    • Abstract: The last Library Trends issue to focus on agricultural libraries and information, titled "Agricultural Libraries and Information," was published in the winter 1990 issue (vol. 38, no. 3). In their introduction the issue's editors, Keith Russell and Maria Pisa, noted that the state of agricultural information was changing due to increases in the number of individuals and organizations involved and in their inclination to cooperate. The editors also pointed to technological developments that helped facilitate cooperation in agricultural information work. Considering these changes, among others, they wrote: "The time appears to be right for agricultural information services to enter a new elevated phase of activity." ... Read More

  • The United States Agricultural Information Network: Accomplishments
           through Strategic Collaboration
    • Abstract: The United States Agricultural Information Network (USAIN) is an organization "for information professionals that provides a forum for discussion of agricultural issues, takes a leadership role in the formation of a national information policy as related to agriculture, makes recommendations to the National Agricultural Library on agricultural information matters, and promotes cooperation and communication among its members" (USAIN, 2016c, n.p.1). It has provided these services to the agricultural information community for nearly three decades and continues to be a vital organization serving the needs of its members.2 As with most organizations, USAIN's history has been an evolving story populated by diverse ... • The Agriculture Network Information Collaborative (AgNIC): Building on the
           Past, Looking to the Future
    • Abstract: The Agriculture Network Information Collaborative (AgNIC) is a network of agriculture libraries and related organizations, including many of the libraries at U.S. land-grant universities. AgNIC began its life with five institutions in the early days of the internet, and celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2015 with over fifty participating groups. The project began as a pilot project to facilitate cooperation among agricultural libraries across the United States, including the National Agricultural Library (NAL). As it has grown, AgNIC has taken advantage of new technologies as they have been developed (Hutchinson & Ruyle, 2000). After studying the possibilities and putting a plan in place, one of the early ... Read More

  • Thirty Years of Preserving, Discovering, and Accessing U.S. Agricultural
Information: Past Progress and Current Challenges
    • Abstract: In the early 1950s an immigrant viticulturist named Konstantin Frank was determined to establish European varieties of the wine grape Vitas vinifera in the northeastern United States. At the time this was generally considered impossible by the viticultural community because previous attempts with V. vinifera had failed, supposedly due to a lack of hardiness for cold winters. Having grown such vines in his even colder native Ukraine, Frank sought proof to the contrary. Poring over numerous old experiment station publications in the library of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York, he discovered Bulletin no. 432: Vinifera Grapes in New York (Anthony, 1917). The publication was full of ... Read More

  • Information Literacy Instruction Programs: Supporting the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences Community at Virginia Tech
    • Abstract: Developing information literacy programs for specific university programs requires a great deal of planning, partnering, and flexibility. Considerations include the size of the campus, the staffing available, and the ability to develop programmatic outcomes that address the needs of the department, college, and university. Librarians typically serve as college, department, or subject liaisons to deliver instruction services related to information literacy; this model has been effective in universities across the country for the past fifty years (Miller & Pressley, 2015).Virginia Tech is a public, land-grant, research university comprised of over 25,000 undergraduate, 4,700 graduate students, 1,400 tenured teaching ... • A Faculty–Librarian Collaboration Success Story: Implementing a
Teach-the-Teacher Library and Information Literacy Instruction Model in a
           First-Year Agricultural Science Course
    • Abstract: The development of information literacy and instruction is often challenged by rapidly changing technology. In addition, information literacy competency in the sciences has further challenges that continue to become more complex. The American Library Association/Association of College and Research Libraries/Standards for Science (ALA/ACRL/STS) Task Force on Information Literacy for Science and Technology (n.d.) developed a living document, "Information Literacy Standards for Science and Engineering/Technology," to expand on the ALA's "Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education" (2000) and provide additional guidance for information literacy in the sciences. • Partnerships in Agricultural Publications: University of Florida's Marston
Science Library and the Florida State Horticultural Society
    • Abstract: The University of Florida's (UF) George A. Smathers Libraries are "the DNA of the academic institution, determining our quality and our directions" (UF, 2009). As such, the libraries are transforming their traditional role as repositories of published research to increasingly become active participants in the publishing process. This expanding role for the library aids the mission of the library and the university to disseminate research. This paper presents the current state of library publishing partnerships with external organizations based on survey results and a publishing partnership with the Florida State Horticultural Society (FSHS) using the Public Knowledge Project's Open Journal System (OJS).Agriculture ... • Librarians at Land-Grant Universities Working with Extension: Three Case
           Reports
    • Abstract: Headlines in the news feature concerns regarding our food systems, water, and health. All of these topics tie into the interdisciplinary field of agriculture, with researchers, educators, and farmers collaborating to leverage knowledge to solve these challenges. Working within these topics are the specialized agriculturalists and all the supporting people and systems at land-grant universities. For the purposes of this paper we will look at how librarians at these institutions can work with Cooperative Extension Service (CES) on the agricultural information needs of their shared constituencies. This paper specifically examines librarians who partnered with CES agents, all of whom work for land-grant universities ... Read More

  • TEEAL and AGORA: Off-and Online Access to the Scientific Literature of
           Agriculture for the Developing World
    • Abstract: Agricultural research scientists, policymakers, and university educators need access to both internationally peer-reviewed and locally generated agricultural knowledge to do their work, and they must be able to disseminate the results of their work to the wider agricultural research and policy community in order to stimulate innovation and change in agricultural practices. This important scholarly research cycle drives research innovation worldwide, and the cycle must function effectively to ensure evidence-based agricultural policy and successful translational agricultural research. In the developing world, however, this research cycle is hindered by the barriers that researchers face in accessing the scientific ... • The USDA's NAIP Imagery in Idaho: A Decade of Evolving Partnerships to
           Improve Access
    • Abstract: Land-grant universities possess unique obligations to serve their states, as well as their university communities. Opportunities to engage the wide range of user groups within a state abound—from local and state governments to federal and tribal agencies, and to the private and nonprofit sectors. One of the key areas in which land-grant universities can provide service is through the application of comparative advantage: universities can leverage technical expertise and innovative capacity over time to enable local stakeholders to better accomplish their goals. In the state of Idaho, aerial photography obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) ... Read More

  • Library-Mediated Collaborations: Data Curation at the National
           Agricultural Library
    • Abstract: Libraries and information professionals play a role in collaborative data curation by participating in scientific research projects or stewarding research data for long-term access (Borgman et al., 2015; Borgman, Wallis, & Enyedy, 2007; Gold, 2010; Heidorn, 2011; Palmer, 1996). However, few studies examine this responsibility in depth. Current discussions around data curation in libraries tend to focus more on creating services to support the needs of patrons, with data curation seen as an extension of traditional repository services (Mayernik et al., 2012; Toups & Hughes, 2013). In this paper we present the findings of our current research project that examines the roles and contributions of information ... Read More

  • Agricultural Librarians Becoming Informationists: A Paradigm Shift
    • Abstract: There are extensive discussions of new roles and emerging models for providers of expert information services in research libraries. Changing models must anticipate short-term, rapid changes and also perceive longterm trends that will define libraries' and librarians' abilities to continue providing meaningful contributions into the future. Where does agricultural librarianship fall within these discussions? Agricultural librarians share many of these challenges with all academic librarians; however, there are unique aspects of the agricultural domain that offer additional opportunities to meet these challenges. These include close ties with land-grant universities and these institutions' specific mission to serve ... Read More
