  • Introduction
    • Abstract: The scholarly publishing market plays a critical role in modern societies since it communicates research findings to researchers, businesses, and industries. Scientific research findings are expected to lead to innovations, inventions, and new products and services that are driving forces of countries' economic growth and development. Research findings in social sciences and business are expected to provide policy guidance for improving individuals' lives and organizational effectiveness and efficiency of businesses, nonprofit institutions, and government agencies. Academic libraries have always been part of the scholarly publishing market since they represent the demand side of the market equilibrium and play an ... Read More

  • The Academic Library in the Face of Cooperative and Commercial Paths to
           Open Access
    • Abstract: In the longue durée of learned bookmaking, the libraries that were enjoyed by medieval nuns and monks, scholars and masters, and more recently by students and faculty have largely operated as a commons for the shared use of books within communities that sought to advance learning. Those communities may have been as narrowly conceived as an enclosed convent; they could be broadly realized, with Thomas Bodley insisting on public admittance to the University of Oxford Library that he rebuilt at the beginning of the seventeenth century; and still, three centuries later, Virginia Woolf found herself excluded from an unnamed Oxbridge library. However open or restricted, such commons were sustained by long-term acts of ... Read More

  • Open Access: Current Overview and Future Prospects
    • Abstract: This author's goal in this paper is to document the current state of open access and to provide commentary on possible future developments. The concept of open access is generally considered to have sprung from three statements that appeared in the early 2000s—the Budapest Open Access Initiative in 2002, the Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing in June 2003, and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities in October 2003 (Suber 2004). The implementation of open access has changed over time, sometimes in ways that the original advocates would not have predicted. This summary of its current status will bring together research and commentary from multiple sources to offer ... Read More

  • Applying Rational Choice Theory to Authors' Behaviors in Unethical
           Publishing in China
    • Abstract: In spring 2017, a Springer journal "Tumor Biology" retracted 107 articles, primarily authored by Chinese researchers, because of fraudulent peer reviews of these articlesThis incident represents just the tip of the iceberg of academic dishonesty in scholarly publishing in today's China. A number of reports have critically exposed various forms of misconduct, such as widespread plagiarism, with as high as 31 percent of plagiarized submissions to a university-based journal in one case alone (Zhang 2010a, 2010b); the concealed system of ghostwriting in the $100 million market of buying/selling scientific papers (Culliford 2013); the unpromising presence of computer-generated nonsense articles (Van Noorden 2014); and ... • Exploring the Determinants of Scholarly Book Prices in the Fields of
           Science, Technology, and Medicine
    • Abstract: Scholarly books along with scholarly journals are a critical part of the network of scholarly communication. Books can be the sources of original research. Many new ideas, creations, and inventions that are conveyed through books, such as On the Origins of Species by Charles Darwin in biology, influence generations of researchers. Books and textbooks play a significant role in knowledge distribution in terms of disseminating research results from scholarly journals and conference proceedings to practitioners who do not necessarily read articles from these original sources (Serenko, Bontis, and Moshonsky 2012). Books also shape cultures, affect people's decisions and behaviors, and are very much part of the history ... Read More

  • Book Citations in PhD Science Dissertations: An Examination of Commercial
           Book Publishers' Influence
    • Abstract: This case study examines the book citations of PhD dissertations awarded at the City University of New York (CUNY). The study spans a ten-year period from 2008–2017 and includes seven subject categories: biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, and physics. Book citations and publishers were identified in order to examine trends and quantify the role of commercial publishers in book selections used in doctoral dissertation research.Doctoral dissertations represent a unique class of research that serves as a capstone to years of academic study and training. • The Roles of Academic Libraries in Shaping Music Publishing in the Digital

    • Abstract: Academic libraries have been slow to integrate electronic music scores into their collections even though electronic resources are considered integral to library services. The Association of College and Research Libraries considers electronic resources integral to information literacy, access to research, and collection policies in academic libraries (ACRL 2006a, 2006b). Collection development surveys conducted by the National Center for Educational Statistics indicate electronic books, database subscriptions, and electronic reference materials constitute roughly half the materials budget in academic libraries in the United States (2012). While librarians continue to examine the impact of electronic books and ... Read More

  • The Library-Press Partnership: An Overview and Two Case Studies
    • Abstract: Creation, publication, and dissemination of new knowledge lie at the heart of scholarly communication. While these functions have changed little over the past several decades, the emerging affordances of information technology are shifting nearly every established mechanism for scholarly communication. Scholars, publishers, and libraries are all re-evaluating their historic roles in scholarly publishing in light of transformative technologies and changing attitudes toward scholarship (Hahn 2008).Over the past few decades, technological advances have created both opportunities and challenges in scholarly communication. While scholars have access to an unprecedented wealth of information, tools, and services that ... Read More

  • Academic Library-Based Publishing: A State of the Evolving Art
    • Abstract: In academia, reputation is key. Scholarly communication provides a forum for sharing and disseminating research results—an environment where content is king (Regazzi 2015) and reputations follow. Mechanisms such as double-blind peer review arguably ensure high quality of the research being put forward (Kelly, Sadeghieh, and Adeli 2014), thereby reinforcing the standards and reputation of the outputs. Metrics have been developed over the past sixty-five years to measure the impact (and perceived value, and reputation) of scholarly venues, starting with Eugene Garfield's Impact Factor for journals in 1955 (Garfield 1999); a suite of journal metrics now exist that are actively endorsed by academic librarians in ... • Building Capacity for Academy-Owned Publishing through the Library
           Publishing Coalition
    • Abstract: A scholarly publishing landscape that is open, inclusive, and sustainable.Over the last decade, a mix of financial, technological, and programmatic developments in academic libraries has spurred the rapid growth of library publishing programs. While skyrocketing journal costs have put pressure on stagnant library budgets, new platforms have emerged that lower the technological barriers to publishing. Meanwhile, libraries have been establishing infrastructure and expertise related to scholarly communication, and developing increasingly deep partnerships with faculty engaged in publishing.Elsewhere in the scholarly communication landscape, recent developments have highlighted the vulnerability of the research ... • Academic Libraries as Unlikely Defendants: A Comparative Fair Use Analysis
of the Georgia State University E-Reserves and HathiTrust Cases
    • Abstract: The story of fair use as a legal doctrine is part of the story of the United States as a new nation. In 1839, Jared Sparks published a twelve-volume biography of George Washington including Washington's letters and correspondences, not previously published. There was a presumption of significant public interest in a first published work on the life of the relatively new nation's first president. Sparks's copyright interest in Washington's biography had eight more years of protection under the 1790 Copyright Act. But in October 1841, Sparks's printer and publisher, Charles Folsom, sued Massachusetts bookseller Bela Marsh for copyright infringement for publishing a two-volume biography of George Washington that took ... • The Development of Resource Sharing, Scholarly Communication, and the Role
of Publishers in the Context of Academic Libraries
    • Abstract: Even for the largest and most well-funded libraries, it has never been possible to own every work its patrons need or want. Basil Stuart Stubbs tells the tale of interlibrary loan (ILL), or as it is alternatively known, resource sharing, in a long-ago issue of Library Trends (April, 1975). ILL has existed as a concept since at least the seventeenth century when French humanist Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc tried and failed "to arrange for the interlibrary lending of manuscripts between the Royal Library in Paris and the Vatican and Barberini libraries in Rome" (Stuart-Stubbs 1975, 649). This idea was revived briefly in 1876 when Samuel Green presented his paper on "personal relations between librarians and ... Read More
