  • Designing for Humans, Not Robots (or Vulcans)
    • Abstract: As information science researchers, we appear to be dealing with a digital vs. analogue dichotomy that we (along with a growing number of other scholars) argue is artificially construed. All our interactions are necessarily embodied, including interactions with digital information. This means we break with a long tradition of seeing information seeking as an activity that is largely cognitive in nature with hands, eyes, and ears merely serving to communicate with the computer system. The reason for breaking with this tradition is that decades of research into embodied cognition suggest that having a body plays a fundamental role in enabling human-level intelligent behavior: the way the physical body interacts with ... • Babies, Bodies, and Books—Librarians' Work for Early Literacy
    • Abstract: This article reports on an empirical study of library activities supporting the development of literacy among very young children (three to nine months old). The aim of the study is to understand how certain literacy activities for babies and parents, such as library programs,1 are part of more complex social practices where literacy is mediated, enacted, and expressed. Bodily aspects of the participants' interactions and the shaping of professional knowledge within the specific literacy practice constitute analytical focal points in the analysis. The theoretical framework stems primarily from a library and information science (LIS) practice-theoretical perspective where literacy is viewed to a great extent as ... Read More

  • Embodying HIV and AIDS Information: Experiences of Serodiscordant Couples
    • Abstract: This paper aims to illuminate how serodiscordant couples were informed by their own and other's bodies—an important element in their experience of HIV/AIDS information. These findings emerged from a phenomenological doctoral study that investigated how serodiscordant couples experience HIV and AIDS information in Malawi. Serodiscordant couples are couples where only one partner is HIV positive. In the absence of an HIV vaccine, information has played a pivotal role in influencing behavior change (Albright 2007). The ability to design successful HIV and AIDS information campaigns is, therefore, highly dependent on knowledge of people's information behavior. Accordingly, there is a need for good understanding of the ... Read More

  • Tuna Noodle Casserole is Tasty' The Information Network of Recipes
    • Abstract: In January 1954, Chatelaine, the largest women's lifestyle Canadian magazine, announced the winner of the fourth edition of "50 Favorite Family Recipes":1 Mrs. E. A (Eva) Phillips, from Belleville, Ontario, who sent in a recipe for Seven Layer Dinner. Why was this recipe selected' According to Marie Holmes (1954, 22), director of the Chatelaine Institute, "everyone thought this flavorful, nourishing dinner-in-a-dish was an excellent example of the kind of eating Canadians like. And when Jean Byers, of the Institute staff, and photographer Peter Croydon went to Belleville to talk to the prize winner and take pictures, we found Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were the kind of people everyone likes." The recipe asks for ... Read More

  • Duration and Desire
    • Abstract: While the myth of the internet promises immediate gratification, the interface of online pornography necessitates delays: logging on, finding a site, clicking through, the delay of loading thumbnails, and the delay of waiting for a selected image, series of images, or moving image to appear. Highspeed internet access may decrease this delay, but, as Patterson has found, "cyberporn constantly pushes the boundaries of bandwidth; as soon as the technology can immediately deliver full-frame images, streaming video comes on offer, with slower load times. Even with a high-speed connection, there is still often delay on the side of the site delivering content." Waiting and looking thus become habit, thereby "inscribing ... Read More

  • The Guided Tour: A Research Technique for the Study of Situated, Embodied
           Information
    • Abstract: In a study about the relationships that returning visitors develop with museums, Michele Everett and Margaret Barrett (2012) use extended excerpts from a guided tour through the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery that the first author conducted with eighty-year-old Virginia—a former university secretary, former children's nanny, and current "Friends" of the museum committee member—in order to emphasize the wide range of reactions, thoughts, and emotions that one space and the artifacts it contains can evoke:Virginia turns to me, motions with her arm and exclaims, "OK, come on!" … I ask Virginia to tell me what she thinks about when she looks at old objects such as these. … "Ah! I just think it's remarkable ... Read More

  • Rhythms of Everyday Life in Mobile Information Seeking: Reflections on a
           Photo-Diary Study
    • Abstract: With the arrival of electric technology, man extended, or set outside himself, a live model of the central nervous system itself.Although the old dichotomy between function and form could be vaguely maintained for a hammer, a locomotive or a chair, it is ridiculous when applied to a mobile phone. Where would you draw the line between form and function'Within Library and Information Studies (LIS), there has been longstanding recognition that information can be communicated through objects and the material environment, and substantial efforts have been made to abstract, manage, and store information in many forms (e.g., books, images, databases) for perpetual access and retrieval (Buckland 1991). Yet, dominant ... Read More

  • Bodies of Evidence: Understanding the Transformation of Collections from
           Individuals to Institutions
    • Abstract: Alfred Charles Kinsey (1894–1956), a zoology professor at Indiana University's Biology Department from 1920–1956, undertook an unprecedented, large-scale research project on human sexuality. His work had a profound impact on the social, cultural, and legal aspects of contemporary American life. Kinsey arrived at IU in 1920 as a teaching faculty with a research focus on gall wasps. In 1938, while teaching a marriage course to undergraduate students, he was disappointed with the scant literature on this topic and discovered gaps in our knowledge about human sexuality. From 1938 to his death in 1956, he devoted himself to collecting and analyzing data pertinent to the sexual behaviors of American men and women.Dr. ... Read More

  • The Case against Information and the Body in Library and Information
           Science
    • Abstract: What follows is an editorial that makes a case against the development of an empirical research frontier in library and information science (LIS) devoted to information and the body. My goal is to offer a sober and constructive counterbalance to this Library Trends special issue that is otherwise uncritical of its proposition. In asserting that original research into embodied information may be unproductive for our field, I draw from my personal experience and reflections as well as foundational conceptions of LIS from past and contemporary luminaries. My conclusion reminds all stakeholders in this Library Trends special issue of the many fascinating and urgent research questions that remain unanswered within the ... Read More

  • Afterword: Does the Focus on Embodied Information Broaden or Narrow
           Library and Information Science'
    • Abstract: I want to thank Jenna Hartel for inviting me to write the afterword to this set of papers. She is largely responsible—fifteen years ago when I was a visiting professor at UCLA—for introducing me to the rich autonomous literature in library and information science (LIS) that relates to my own project of "social epistemology" (Fuller 1988). That phrase turns out to have been an LIS coinage, though I had not known that when I began my project. However, since that time, I have taken a special interest in this field—and the field in me (e.g., Zandonade 2004; Fuller 2010).As someone whose conception of social epistemology is derived mainly from philosophy and sociology, the striking feature of the LIS contribution has ...
