  • L’esprit (dé)réglé: Literature, Science, and the Life of the Mind in
           France, 1700–1900
    • Abstract: IF, AS HISTORIAN FERNANDO VIDAL has observed, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries can be called the “Age of the Brain” in recognition of the rise of both neuroscience and neuroculture (which looks to the brain to explain everything from rational reasoning to our appreciation of art), then we might characterize the two centuries that preceded them as the “Age of Esprit.”1 The period 1700–1900 was both ‘pre-cerebral,’ in the sense of preceding the period when the self was made to reside squarely in the brain, and pre-Freudian; yet it was intensely preoccupied with matters of esprit. The word itself became increasingly broad and complex in French—a complexification driven both deliberately by certain ... Read More

    • Abstract: ON SAIT DEPUIS LA FONTAINE comment l’esprit vient aux filles.
    • Abstract: On dit esquisser une pensée. Read More

  • Singular Devices: Minds at Work from Montesquieu to Diderot
    • Abstract: “MARVELOUS SINGULARITY,” the term used by Roland Barthes to describe the mythic function of modern French intellectuals, also fits the image of distinguished minds in the eighteenth century.1 This was a period of seminal shifts in thinking about the nature and meaning of esprit, and also about people who devoted themselves to intellectual work. It ushered in the new type of being known as the original genius, a figure invested with both Promethean grandeur and very human frailties. It redrew the social portrait of scholars, associating them not with pedantry and boorish behavior (as in the previous century), but with noble yet obsessive passions like the zeal for learning. Last but not least, it invented a ... Read More

  • The Zoology of Mind: Instinct and Intelligence in Eighteenth-and
           Nineteenth-Century Natural History
    • Abstract: IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIND terms that posit two more starkly opposed regimes of the “life of the mind” than instinct and intelligence. In the most extreme formulation of this opposition, the minds governing living beings are either free, rational, and conscious, or determined, unconscious, and mechanical. The dichotomy forged by these two terms has generally served to draw a sharp line between humans and animals, and, within the figure of homo duplex himself, the border between a free, rational self and the lower passions and drives that secure our conservation.
Read More

Read More

Read More

• Gathering Intelligence from Taine to Bergson
    • Abstract: MARCEL PROUST DID NOT think philosophers were good readers of his novel. In an essay on Flaubert’s style, Proust complains that philosophers misunderstand the ambitions of his own prose by focusing on his use of concepts. The only example we are given of a particular word that is prone to being misread by philosophers is “intelligence.”1 Proust’s passing reference underscores the dramatic semantic and philosophical transformations of the term “intelligence” since the early modern period, which exposed it to a conflict of interpretation at the cusp of the twentieth century. This article analyzes one stage in the genealogy of “intelligence”: it examines how the notion rearticulated the nature and limits of ... Read More

           Alexandre Leupin (review)
    • Abstract: Édouard Glissant has often been called a novelist, an essayist, a theorist, and—his preference—a poet, but he has less frequently been called a philosopher. Despite the ontological and epistemological thrust of his notions of creolization, Relation, and the Tout-Monde, Glissant always balked at the self-enclosed systems associated with philosophy. Yet his work, in its terminological consistency and conceptual rigor, undeniably develops a kind of system—a système non systématique, to quote a short letter that Glissant wrote to his friend and colleague Alexandre Leupin. This paradox lies at the heart of Leupin’s rich and original new study, Édouard Glissant, philosophe, which argues that Glissant is a ... Read More

  • Contemporary Sino-French Cinemas: Absent Fathers, Banned Books, and Red
Balloons by Michelle E. Bloom (review)
