           Voyages extraordinaires
    • Abstract: UN GRAND NOMBRE DE MYTHES accompagnent les récits de Jules Verne (1828–1905). Read More

  • The Climate of Naturalism: Zola’s Atmospheres
    • Abstract: TWO DECADES AFTER his influential reflection on Joseph M. W. Turner’s paintings of clouds from the 1840s, Michel Serres revised his perception of the thermodynamic fire that fueled those landscapes. Having learned to read the archival strata of climatic data inscribed in Greenland’s ice through advances in climatology, Serres reports, we can recognize that Turner’s stochastic clouds may not distill “the boilers of industry” within their vapor, but rather “Tambora’s crater”—a reference to the cataclysmic volcanic eruption in Indonesia that left Europe ash-strewn and summerless in 1816.1 Positing industry and weather as distinct agents—as “causes” and “things,” metaphorical “representation” and observed ...
Read More

  • Fromentin on cactus grandiflora: The Aesthetics of Ecology in Une
           année dans le Sahel
    • Abstract: Ces gigantesques pins d’Italie sous lesquels reposent quelques Arabes avec leurs dromadaires, sont d’une tournure et d’un jet admirable, et dans ces aloès, ces cactus et autres plantes grasses du premier plan à droite, nous retrouvons la science de dessin, la touche vigoureuse et originale des grands roseaux et plantes aquatiques du Nil, de sa Vue du Caire.1CRITIC LOUIS PEISSE’S DESCRIPTION of Prosper Marilhat’s contribution to the Salon of 1841, Environs de Beyrouth, insists on the importance of vegetation in the painting that depicts a group of men and camels under large pine trees.
• Bernard Werber’s Poetics of Ecological Reconstruction: “In
           Praise of Amnesia”?
    • Abstract: IN 1995, LAWRENCE BUELL proposed criteria for works of literature to be considered as eco-fiction. He lists the following as conditions for inclusion in the genre:1.The nonhuman environment is present not merely as a framing device but as a presence that begins to suggest that human history is implicated in natural history.2.The human interest is not understood to be the only legitimate interest.3.Human accountability to the environment is part of the text’s ethical orientation.4.Some sense of the environment as a process rather than a constant or a given is at least implicit in the text.1Bernard Werber, one of France’s best-selling authors,2 undoubtedly qualifies as an author of eco-fiction, since most of ...
    • Abstract: LA ZOOPOÉTIQUE OPÈRE DES CROISEMENTS inédits entre études littéraires et philosophie, histoire, anthropologie perspectiviste, éthique, mésologie, éthologie, zoosémiotique, biologie et écologie. Read More

• At the Intersection of Ecocriticism and the Colonial Maghreb: Antoine
Delesvaux and Joann Sfar’s Le chat du rabbin
    • Abstract: THE PAST TWO DECADES OF REFLECTION in the humanities and the social sciences have given rise to numerous studies that examine aspects of postcolonialism and animality. Although these fields of enquiry have been treated as divergent, there is commonality between them, as shown by an increasing number of cinematographic and fictional works in the francophone, anglophone, and lusophone world that incorporate the presence of animals. Both twentieth-century disciplines, while ostensibly relating to different matters (humans versus animals), in reality share a concern for agency, otherness, power, and resistance. Philip Armstrong notes this specific aspect in his article “The Postcolonial Animal.”1 He indicates a ... Read More

Read More

  • Legacies of the Rue Morgue: Science, Space and Crime Fiction in France by
           Andrea Goulet (review)
    • Abstract: In this ambitious study of French crime fiction, spanning 1860’s feuilletons through to twenty-first century cyberpunk, Andrea Goulet groups close readings of an impressive range of novels into “Archaeologies,” emphasising the “vertical” contrast between subterranean crime and surface order, and “Cartographies,” focusing on “horizontal” phenomena such as maps, grids, and locked rooms. These sections are separated by an intervening chapter, appropriately entitled “Intersections,” in which the titular addresses of “street-name mysteries” emerge as sites where the “horizontal” and the “vertical,” along with a number of other apparently antithetical pairings (present/past, real/imaginary and private/public), can be ... • Inanimation: Theories of Inorganic Life by David Wills (review)
    • Abstract: David Wills’s Inanimation is the third installment of what now appears to be a trilogy of clearly Derrida-inspired works. It follows Prosthesis and Dorsality, which demonstrate respectively how what manifests as supplementary to be an underlying presence all the while and how what seems mechanically technological to be a natural process already underway. Inanimation, on its part, continues or animates that mode of Derridean deconstruction in relation to the topic of life. As stated in the Preface, it is committed to “thinking life outside of [the animate/inanimate or organic/inorganic] dualism” (xi), if not seeking out “inorganic instances” (x) in the living. The rest of Inanimation endeavors to do this through a ... Read More

  • Rewriting Les Mystères de Paris : The Mystères Urbains and the
           Palimpsest by Amy Wigelsworth (review)
• Writing Japonisme: Aesthetic Translation in Nineteenth-Century French
           Prose by Pamela Genova (review)
    • Abstract: Pamela Genova’s volume aims to explore the relationship between Japanese visual arts and French prose in the second half of the nineteenth century. This is a courageous book that tackles a controversial topic in art historical circles (the influence of Japanese art on French art) within an interdisciplinary environment. The corpus is composed of well-researched authors—Edmond de Goncourt, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Emile Zola, and Stéphane Mallarmé—but the reader regrets that the volume did not consider introducing a more in-depth and much needed study of Zacharie Astruc’s writings, a leading figure of French Japonisme. The reader also misses illustrations and a complete bibliography. The introduction “Japonisme and the ... Read More
