  • Marguerite de Navarre and the Querelle des femmes
    • Abstract: THE PLAN FOR THIS SPECIAL ISSUE grew out of two sessions at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in October 2013. Like this issue, these sessions were conceived in honor of Régine Reynolds-Cornell, professor emerita of French at Agnes Scott College and prolific scholar whose research has focused largely, but not uniquely, on women and women writers in the Renaissance. In addition to her invaluable studies on such early modern women writers as Georgette de Montenay,1 Marguerite Petit du Noyer,2 and Nicole Liébault,3 and her ground-breaking work on the writer or group of writers known under the pseudonym of Jeanne Flore,4 Reynolds-Cornell has remained at the forefront of ... • In the Eye of the Beholder: The Rhetoric of Beauty and the Beauty of
           Rhetoric in the Heptaméron
    • Abstract: APLEASING COUNTENANCE is an outward manifestation of inner beauty, virtue, and nobility—that is an accepted commonplace in courtly and early modern literature. For some critics, the Heptaméron seems typical in this respect, as the portrayal of aristocratic characters appears to reinforce literary convention, as well as the dominant ideology that favors the ruling élite.1 Yet, even though these terms—noblesse, beauté, vertu—sometimes occur together in Marguerite de Navarre’s nouvelles,2 this sixteenth-century author provides a much more complex and nuanced reading of beauty and its effects in her text. Indeed, in the Heptaméron, there is much more emphasis on the ways beauty can affect others than on detailed ... Read More

  • What Women Know: The Power of Savoir in Marguerite de Navarre’s
           Heptaméron
    • Abstract: “AU TEMPS DU ROY FRANÇOIS, premier de ce nom, y avoit une dame [...] qui sçavoit bien faire ung bon compte,” begins novella 62 of the Heptaméron (451), and although the story goes on to revolve around a woman who does not know how to tell her tale properly, readers are reminded that Marguerite de Navarre, who is implied to be this noble lady, knows how to tell a good story.1 Both savoir and connaître appear regularly throughout the Heptaméron. According to Le Grand Robert, both verbs take the sense of avoir présent à l’esprit starting in the tenth century. Around the same time, savoir also means “to know how to do something,” and in the eleventh century, connaître means “to experience something,” to know how ... Read More

  • Scandalous Women or Scandalous Judgment': The Social Perception of
Women and the Theology of Scandal in the Heptaméron
    • Abstract: ONE OF RÉGINE REYNOLDS-CORNELL’S most valuable contributions to the study of French Renaissance literature was the instrumental role she played in rekindling scholarly interest in Marguerite de Navarre’s theatre, one of the few surviving examples of plays by female authors from the period. Among her numerous studies of the subject is an article in which she examines the queen’s various rhetorical uses of silence in her plays. Reynolds-Cornell classifies one such use as “Moral Silence,” which can include “[s]ynergetic silence in the face of a great and usually evil force” or “silence of resignation due to the futility of speech when there is an obvious lack of communication, or the total failure to share a ... • Saint Sebastian and the Mule-driver’s Wife: Marguerite de
           Navarre’s Renaissance Martyr
    • Abstract: IN THE SECOND TALE of Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptaméron, Oisille recounts the tragic story of the mule-driver’s wife. This virtuous woman is brutally attacked with a sword, raped, and murdered. The excessive violence of the assault and the heroine’s spiritual response to extreme brutality recall various aspects of saints’ lives. Mary B. McKinley refers to the tale as “an exemplary hagiographical account of martyrdom.”1 John D. Bernard classifies the tale as “a quasi saint’s legend.”2 For André Tournon it is “a hagiographical and entirely unequivocal story.”3 While scholars have remarked on the similarities between this tale and hagiographical narratives, the multiple parallels between the heroine and Saint ... • From désert to patrie: Marguerite de Navarre’s Lessons from the
           New World
    • Abstract: SUSAN AMUSSEN AND ALLYSON POSKA have contended that gender transcends imperial, religious, and cultural boundaries and that an analysis of gender makes possible a more detailed and comprehensive assessment of the impact that European societies had on the early modern Atlantic world than more traditional scholarship alone provides.1 Subsequently, they proposed that scholars could use an analysis of gender to gain a fuller understanding not only of Europe’s effect on the Atlantic world, but also of the Atlantic world’s effect on Europe. They asked, “How did New World encounters and Atlantic contacts have a gendered impact on European society'”2 In addition to the new commodities (tobacco, sugar, chocolate) ... Read More

  • Shifting Rules and Shifty Wives: A Historical Reading of Three Tales from
           the Heptaméron
    • Abstract: IN THE DEVIS THAT SEPARATE NOVELLAS in the Heptaméron, the devisants often comment on the relationship between the story just told and the one to come. A sole pair of non-sequential stories in the Heptaméron, however, is explicitly linked by the devisants-narrators: tales 21 and 40. These two novellas also share a character, an unnamed nobleman, the only repeat character in the Heptaméron besides Marguerite and her royal family members. He heads the family of the two heroines from novellas 21 and 40. In a text whose structural complexities continue to intrigue scholars, such a coincidence begs further examination. The similarities between the two novellas are multiple; in each, a heroine’s marital prospects ... Read More

  • Intertextual Echoes: Emblems, Rabelais, and Heptaméron 13
    • Abstract: IN THE TWO DECADES FROM 1530 TO 1550, a period in which Marguerite de Navarre was writing a number of important works including her Heptaméron, François Rabelais published the first three masterpieces of his Chronicles: Pantagruel in 1532, Gargantua in 1534, and the Tiers Livre, which he dedicated to Navarre, in 1546. Marguerite de Navarre and François Rabelais shared affinities with evangelical reformers, moved among similar social and political circles from 1530 to 1549, and, as Mireille Huchon has shown, were acquainted.1 Marguerite de Navarre was deeply committed to, and near the center of, several of the most important intellectual, theological, and literary debates of the period, which are also echoed ... • Negotiating Neoplatonism and the Androgyne Metaphor in Heptaméron 70
           and 19
    • Abstract: THE PRESENCE OF NEOPLATONIC LOVE PHILOSOPHY in Marguerite de Navarre’s (1492–1549) Heptaméron (1559) has been discussed by a number of scholars, including Robert D. Bernard, Abel Lefranc, Paula Sommers, Marcel Tetel, and Phillippe de Lajarte.1 Most recently the topic is raised by Philip Ford in the Companion to Marguerite de Navarre (2013), by Marian Rothstein in The Androgyne in Early Modern France (2015), and by Todd Reeser in his latest book Setting Plato Straight (2016). Marguerite is associated with the translation of Marsilio Ficino’s (1433–1499) De amore (1484), she discusses Neoplatonic philosophy in her letters to Briçonnet, and she has her devisants discuss Plato and “les philosophes du temps ... • Gender Flexibility and Androgyny in Marguerite de Navarre’s Chansons
           spirituelles
    • Abstract: IN RECENTLY PUBLISHED WORKS, such as the Companion to Marguerite de Navarre and Marian Rothstein’s The Androgyne in Early Modern France, critics have drawn attention to both the Queen of Navarre’s mystic spiritualism and the androgyne myth’s ubiquity in sixteenth-century France.1 I would like to sketch out some connections between these two ideas. First, I will briefly describe how the queen’s devotional poetry and chansons spirituelles often give voice and authority to female speakers in a general sense.2 Marguerite accomplishes this by reworking literary convention in a way that valorizes the feminine voice and perspective. In so doing, she turns the tables on the inherent gender-based power relationships ... Read More

  • Reinscribing the Feminine in La navire and Le miroir de Jhesus Christ
           crucifié
    • Abstract: IN HER EXCELLENT ARTICLE, “Waiting in the Wings: The Characters in Marguerite de Navarre’s Théâtre Profane,” Régine Reynolds-Cornell brings out connections between the Queen’s theater, the Heptaméron, and her poetry.1 Marguerite scholars have emphasized the breadth, scope, and diversity of the queen’s prolific literary legacy, while noting that her poetic production remains the most substantial corpus. I would like to present here a mise en rapport between two of her late verse works, La navire (probably written in 1547), stemming from her grief at the death of François 1er, and Le miroir de Jhesus Christ crucifié (probably written in 1549). By considering her acute awareness of herself as a poet moved by an ... Read More

  • Marguerite de Navarre’s Shifting Gaze: Perspectives on Gender, Class,
and Politics in the Heptaméron by Elizabeth Chesney Zegura (review)
    • Abstract: The “shifting gaze” of the title of Elizabeth Chesney Zegura’s recent monograph on the Heptaméron is a subversive one. In exquisite prose and with detailed textual analysis, Zegura investigates the many ways in which Marguerite de Navarre delves into subjects with which she is not normally associated. In addition to gender relations and sexual violence, thematics of the text that have been widely examined elsewhere, Zegura also uncovers pointed commentary on class relations and political structures. Always giving precise examples based on extended interpretations of the tales themselves, Zegura makes a unique contribution to existing scholarship on the Heptaméron by supplementing the more frequent aural ...
