  • Generic Baggage: Encountering Other People in "À une passante" and
           "Les veuves"
    • Abstract: Un œil expérimenté ne s'y trompe jamais. Dans ces traits rigides ou abattus, dans ces yeux caves et ternes, ou brillants des derniers éclairs de la lutte, dans ces rides profondes et nombreuses, dans ces démarches si lentes ou si saccadées, il déchiffre tout de suite les innombrables légendes de l'amour trompé, du dévouement méconnu, des efforts non récompensés, de la faim et du froid humblement, silencieusement supportés.1LIKE THE POETS AND PHILOSOPHERS described by the narrator of "Les veuves" (OC 1:292–94), Baudelaire's readers make judgments about the other people in his texts. While we hope to avoid the naivety of the physiognomist—and critics have noted the dangers of taking Baudelaire's texts at face ... Read More

  • Baudelaire and Other People
    • Abstract: OVER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS after the death of Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867), his work remains a focus of interest and investigation for scholars of modernity across a range of disciplines and discourses. In this issue of L'Esprit Créateur, we propose that one reason Baudelaire's œuvre continues to be such a key point of reference for art historians, cultural historians, urban studies specialists, and literary scholars is that his writings—his poetry, prose, and criticism—explore a phenomenon that continues to be a major preoccupation today, namely, what it means to live in permanent proximity to other people. Closely associated with the definition and experience of modernity itself, Baudelaire inhabited the ... Read More

  • Baudelaire's Other Passer-by
    • Abstract: A GREAT DEAL DEPENDS ON HOW one reads 'other people' in Baudelaire. To begin with, what kind of alterity is implied in speaking of other people' In other words, how are we to understand the relation Baudelaire establishes between a definite and an indefinite other when, for example, we pass from l'homme who passes eternally in line 3 of "Correspondances" to une femme who, in the historical past, is said already to have passed in line 3 of "À une passante"' From one poem to the other, we seem to pass from a state of nature—"La Nature est un temple"—to the deafening space of a modern city—"La rue assourdissante autour de moi." But from one poem to the other, we also pass from one mode of language to another, since ... Read More

  • Baudelaire's "L'étranger" and the Limits of Mind-Reading
    • Abstract: IN RECENT YEARS, psychologists have been testing the hypothesis that reading works of literature can actively enhance our ability to decipher the intentions and feelings of others, also known as Theory of Mind (ToM), mind-reading or mentalizing. It is a fact that the kind of writing we refer to as literary often stages encounters with enigmatic others, whose motivations require decoding. Not only do fictional characters regularly interpret verbal and visual cues about the intentions and desires of other characters, but readers too are consistently obliged to make inferences about the feelings and intentions of characters. The cognitive literary scholar Lisa Zunshine has argued that literary fiction, because it ... Read More

  • Destabilizing the Other in Baudelaire-Bertrand-Rimbaud
    • Abstract: CHARLES BAUDELAIRE, in the dedicatory remarks to Arsène Houssaye at the beginning of Le spleen de Paris (1869), cites Aloysius Bertrand's Gaspard de la nuit (1842) as an inspiration:C'est en feuilletant, pour la vingtième fois au moins, le fameux Gaspard de la Nuit, d'Aloysius Bertrand […] que l'idée m'est venue de tenter quelque chose d'analogue, et d'appliquer à la description de la vie moderne, ou plutôt d'une vie moderne et plus abstraite, le procédé qu'il avait appliqué à la peinture de la vie ancienne, si étrangement pittoresque. Read More

    • Abstract: WHAT KIND OF CLAIMS can ecocriticism open up for thinking about the nineteenth-century lyric as an epideictic literary mode—that is, as a form of writing, or, as Barbara Cassin suggests, a dimension of language, informed less by the logics or categories of mimesis than by a concern, broadly speaking, for 'what matters''1 In what follows, we will argue that, in addition to the sorts of properly poetic and historic genealogies that bind Baudelaire to a younger, though nearly contemporary, poet like Arthur Rimbaud,2 an ecopoetic connection may also be charted out between the two poets. This connection seems all the more plausible if we understand the term ecopoetic to designate something more than the way nature is ... Read More

Read More

• Baudelaire and the Chinese Object
    • Abstract: BAUDELAIRE'S REVIEW of the Exposition universelle of 1855 included a shocking attack on Ingres. His denigration of the seventy-five-year-old champion of neoclassical painting arguably points to a new way of approaching Ingres's paintings in terms of their surreal artificiality, but it meant that this section of his review was deemed unpublishable at the time. In any case his polemical contrast of Ingres and Delacroix opens apparently indirectly, with a discussion of aesthetic relativism. Baudelaire's entry point into the Exposition is in fact a display of Chinese objets d'art brought to France by Charles de Montigny, the first French Consul to Shanghai (1848–53). From the outset his review of this first Paris ... Read More

  • Absent Presence: Reading Other Artists in Baudelaire's Critical Essays
THE WIDESPREAD PRESENCE of other artists in Baudelaire's œuvre has long been a given.2 From his earliest salons to his late essays on contemporary authors, painters, and composers, the poet's critical work was actively engaged in examining the experience of modernity through the experience of art. At the same time, his poetry is filled with references and apostrophes to other artists, as well as evocations and occasional ekphrases of their works. Indeed, the pages of Baudelaire's œuvres complètes are populated by the most influential artistic figures of the period, including Hugo, Gautier, Poe, Delacroix, Guys ... Read More

  • "Mon gosier de métal parle toutes les langues": Translations and
Transformations of Baudelaire in Black Metal Music
    • Abstract: WHAT DOES BAUDELAIRE'S POETRY sound like' How do other people make Baudelaire's poetry sound' These two interlinked questions remind us that as poetry goes from the page to performance, it is reliant on the voices and sounds of others. Baudelaire's poetry is constructed from sound patterns and thematic networks that afford the text a particular set of characteristics and influence particular performance genres. Attributes of Baudelaire's poetry, pervaded by dark imagery, give rise to distinctive performance responses that exploit alternative vocal and sonic techniques. As Baudelaire makes other people—and objects—speak and sound within his poetry, he invites us to explore the source and the nature of these voices ... Read More

  • Is Theory Good for the Jews' by Bruno Chaouat (review)
• Muslim Women in French Cinema: Voices of Maghrebi Migrants in France by
           Leslie Kealhofer-Kemp (review)
    • Abstract: This book fills a lacuna in previous scholarship on immigration and ethnicity in French cinema. Building on work in feminist and film studies, sociology, and ethnography, Kealhofer-Kemp shifts the historic focus by documenting cinematic depictions of the generation of Algerian, Moroccan, and Tunisian women who migrated to France in the 1960s and 1970s, usually as the spouses of economic migrants or of harkis, and many of whom became parents to the more highly visible "beur" generation. Though first-generation women have often been consigned to a real or imagined status of invisibility due to the intersectional barriers they faced, their influence is perceptible at myriad levels in cinema and contemporary culture. ...
           Elsayed (review)
    • Abstract: Hanan Elsayed's book L'histoire sacrée de l'Islam dans la fiction maghrébine analyzes four key Francophone novels and shows how each text draws on diverse religious, historical, and philosophical sources and legacies to prefigure the authors' own imaginative perception of the early Islamic period. These narratives, written by Assia Djebar, Anissa Boumediene, Driss Chraibi, and Salim Bachi, reimagine early Islam as they reinterpret and reread original Islamic sources. The book examines how these authors translate early Islamic texts into new kinds of readings that unsettle hierarchies, reimagine the Muslim tradition to make it more embedded in contemporary local settings, and position fictions at the center of ... • French Ecocriticism : From the Early Modern Period to the Twenty-First
Century dir. by Daniel A. Finch-Race et Stephanie Posthumus (review)
