  • Connection without Engagement: Paradoxes of North American Armenian Return
           Migration
    • Abstract: In the twentieth century, migration yielded unprecedented changes throughout the globe. Traditional accounts of migration—of peoples from less privileged countries moving to more privileged countries—have been augmented by more complex analyses (Schein 1998; Yang 2000; Žmegač 2005; Sardinha 2008; Tsuda 2009). More specifically, scholarship on return migration has introduced new ways of understanding migratory trajectories by incorporating ethnic ties and nostalgic imagination into its analyses. Such scholarship has provided new ways of moving beyond acknowledged push factors and uncovering new pull factors (Tsuda 2009). The roles of ethnicity and imagination (sentimentality) help generate an understanding of ... Read More

  • Imputing Diaspora: An Examination of Turkish Political Rhetoric in Germany
    • Abstract: In this article, I examine the different identitarian discourses present in the rhetoric of leading Turkish politicians when they speak to the ethnicized Turkish residents of Germany (the largest contingent of the so-called Turkish diaspora). In the process, I discuss how major political actors from Turkey publicly interpret diaspora identity. To this end, I analyze two speeches given in early 2011 by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the then prime minister of Turkey, and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the main opposition party, as part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the Turkish labor migration to Germany. These speaking events were also bids for support in the Turkish general election that took place later on ... Read More

  • Mapping Chinese Return Migration from New Zealand: A Quantitative Data
           Analysis from a Comparative Perspective
    • Abstract: New Chinese migrants1 from the People's Republic of China (PRC) have made up a significant part of New Zealand's immigrant intake since the mid-1990s and have also contributed significantly to the composition of the Chinese population in this country (Liu 2011). The most updated data from Immigration New Zealand shows that in the period from 1997 to 2015, China was one of the top eight immigrant source countries for New Zealand (China, India, Philippines, Korea, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Fiji, and Samoa). Table 1 shows that during this period of time, the total number of residence approvals under the New Zealand Residence Programme was 765,179, of which about 13.7% (104,484) were granted migrants from the ... • Post-Diaspora and the Poetics of "What?" in Fred Wah's Diamond Grill
    • Abstract: Fred Wah's auto-/bio-fictional Diamond Grill (1996) is a problem: it presents challenges, not only in terms of its form and content but also its critical reception or categorization. What kind of text is it? While this long poem's critical reception frequently categorizes it as a now-canonical representative of Canadian ethnography and "ethnopoetics," it is more than simply an ethnic bio-text.1 While it may be a part of the developing Canadian "poetics of diaspora" (Beauregard 2005, 135), the poem exceeds that focus to extend beyond diaspora. And although Wah admits linkages between the work and his own life, the text "opens with a declaration of its fictitiousness, immediately frustrating those readings that would ... Read More

  • Transnational Associational Life and Political Mobilization of Ecuadorians
and Argentines in Spain and Italy: What Role for Sending State Policies?
    • Abstract: A significant emigration wave from South America took place in the late 1990s and early 2000s, largely fueled by dramatic economic and politico-institutional crises. At this time, an increasing number of Ecuadorian and Argentine emigrants preferred Europe rather than the United States as their destination. Their associational activities have taken different forms across communities and destination sites. Migrant associations have expanded and today embody a form of representation of the newcomers in host societies and, to a lesser extent, back home, too. Given long distances, fragmentation, and inexperience, transnational and political engagement cannot be taken for granted. Recently, sending countries have been ... Read More

  • The Homeland in the Literature and Music of Syrian-Lebanese Immigrants and
           their Descendants in Brazil
    • Abstract: In diaspora-related writing, the theme of homeland is often foregrounded and theoretically assessed. In this article, we take a close look into the idea of homeland as it has been evoked, remembered, or reconstructed through the literature and music of Syrian-Lebanese immigrants and their descendants in Brazil.1 In this case, we use the term immigrants (in Arabic, muhājirīn, or those who have left for or have been living in the mahjar—literally, the place of immigration) in reference to communities in Brazil who have Syrian or Lebanese roots. Among them are a relatively small number who have come to Brazil during recent decades and whose status may fit the familiar immigrant profile—"one who leaves his country of ... Read More

  • Comparative Constructions of Malaysian Indian Class Dynamics: K.S.
Maniam's The Return and Preeta Samarasan's Evening Is the Whole Day
    • Abstract: Diaspora, the scattering of communities from an original, ancestral homeland, often brings with it stories of communal beginnings and the subsequent journey into the new land. These stories tend to be reproduced in and as what Paul Gilroy (2003) has termed "diaspora consciousness," that which is " reproduced when identity is focused on the social dynamics of remembrance and communication, linked to a strong sense of the dangers involved in forgetting the location of one's origin and the process of diaspora or scattering" (318). Such remembrance and communication of diasporic beginnings are often witnessed in diasporic fiction, as authors strive to articulate and re-inscribe the moment of diasporic origin and the ... • Ancestral and Territorial Homelands: The Politics of the Indian Diaspora
           in Kenya
    • Abstract: Invited to debate the question, "Are Asiatics and the Coloured Races a Menace to the Empire?" at the Johannesburg YMCA in 1908, the young Mohandas Gandhi regretted that such a question was even debatable, since the contribution of Asians and Africans, as well as mixedrace peoples, to the empire was incontrovertible. Rebutting Lord Selborne's earlier denunciation of Eastern civilization, Gandhi ([1908] 1999) characterized the differences between the West and East in a radically different manner: "Western civilization is centrifugal, eastern civilization is centripetal. Western civilization, therefore, is naturally disruptive, whereas eastern civilization combines. I believe also that western civilization is without ... Read More

  • Rethinking Diversity in Europe: Lessons from the New World
    • Abstract: Following Ulf Hannerz's (1987) evocation of a "world in creolization," the term has been taken beyond its historical reference point in the Caribbean in order to analyze complex processes relating to contemporary globalization. Yet, for Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez and Shirley Anne Tate, editors of the volume entitled Creolizing Europe, the wider theoretical and empirical application of creolization has thus far overlooked the "decolonial epistemological contribution of Caribbean intellectuals" in formulating the concept "in political, economic, cultural and theoretical terms" (2). This collection of essays, several of which were presented at an international conference, "Creolizing Europe," in 2007, seeks to ... Read More

  • When the Guest becomes the Host: Review of Familiar Strangers: The
Georgian Diaspora and the Evolution of the Soviet Empire
    • Abstract: I will begin my review of this excellent book with a concrete example drawn from somewhere near its middle. The late socialist culture of circulation is epitomized by an entirely trivial, banal, easily ignored item, a kind of shopping bag: the "avos'ka (from avos', 'perhaps'). This was a string shopping bag, infinitely expandable, 'just in case' [the socialist shopper] came across toilet paper, bananas, or some other scarce commodity," a bag representing, by its very ubiquity, "the specificity of Soviet shopping: shortages and poor distribution" (Reid 2002, 211). Erik Scott echoes this point in Familiar Strangers: "The banality of this particular item speaks to the peculiarities of the Soviet second economy. These ... Read More
