Read More

Read More

  • Translator's Note on the Sonnets
    • Abstract: Translating poetry is a complex process. The translation of a single sonnet, for example, involves dozens of complex decisions, and as each decision may entail choosing one word from among several options, one could reasonably argue that translating a sonnet results from making not dozens, but hundreds of decisions. So trying to explain in any detail how one translates a sonnet is not a practical goal unless one wishes to dedicate an entire book to the endeavor. Nonetheless, it is certainly reasonable, and indeed necessary, that the translator give a brief accounting of some of the principles that guided his or her work.It is a cliché for translators to invoke an allegiance to fidelity; but it seems equally common ...
Read More

• Abstract: Manuscrito helicoidal. • Ángel Escobar and the other shipwrecks
    • Abstract: The Spanish-language version of this essay by Efraín Rodríguez Santana is entitled "Ángel Escobar y los otros naufragios." It appears in the anthology Ángel Escobar: Poesía completa (Havana: UNIÓN, 2006). Translated by Kristin Dykstra with the author's permission. These are some notes of introduction to the voice of a great poet. The poet is named Ángel Escobar, and he died in 1997. One afternoon when he was about to turn forty, he decided to sit on the rail of the balcony at his apartment, then let himself fall. The abyss received him, but Ángel's abyss had a concrete horizon and his head struck hard against its surface. At last tranquility came, the rest that he had sought through valiant struggles and by pursuing ... Read More

  • Reflections on a Conversation with Ana María Jiménez, Wife of
           Ángel Escobar
    • Abstract: "All of the poems my wife has written""Todos los poemas los ha escrito mi esposa"Ana María Jiménez, Anita as she is called, exudes at once fragility and strength, tears and joy, caution and generosity. In July of 2009, she graciously agreed to talk with me about her husband, the celebrated Cuban poet Ángel Escobar who tragically ended his long battle with schizophrenia when he jumped from the fourth-story window of his Havana apartment in 1997. I met up with Anita in Santiago de Chile, in her office at the Institute for Nutrition and Food Technology (Instituto de Nutrición y Tecnología de los Alimentos) at the University of Chile, where she ekes out a living doing secretarial work, a job that is a far cry from her ... • Translator's Note to the Fables of Félix María Samaniego
    • Abstract: Bequeathed from classical antiquity and of probable non-Western origin, the fable genre flourished during both the Spanish Enlightenment and Romanticism. Tomás de Iriarte (1750-1791), Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch (1806-1880), Miguel Augustín Príncipe (1811-1866), and Ramón de Campoamor (1817-1901) all tried their hand at the form. Félix María Samaniego (1745-1801), Iriarte's arch-rival, imbued his work with the values of his day, borrowing extensively from Jean de La Fontaine, the Roman Phaedrus, and the Englishman John Gay. Contemporary readers, therefore, may find Samaniego's fables most enjoyable for the ways in which they strive but fail to address humankind's putatively universal experience. Read as cultural ...
