  • "Vibrating through all its breadth": Musical Fiction and Materialist
Aesthetics in the Strand Musical Magazine
    • Abstract: The aims of George Newnes's Strand Musical Magazine were largely practical in nature.1 Though the periodical ran only briefly—appearing in six installments from January 1895 to December 1897—its few volumes were staggeringly rich, each with over 500 pages of material about musical life in nineteenth-century Britain.2 Edited by the French-born music publisher Emile Hatzfeld, it printed articles about the lives of composers, accounts of the history of English musical institutions, notifications of upcoming concerts, portraits and photographs of eminent musical figures, sheet music for dozens of original compositions, and illustrated fictional works by a variety of relatively unknown or anonymous writers.3As Hatzfeld ... • Participatory Government by Journalism: Class Periodicals and the Local
           State, 1880–1914
    • Abstract: Reflecting on the stupendous growth of local government during the nineteenth century, jurist and regular class-periodical contributor Edward Jenks pleaded, "We need some help."1 Britain's "local government," he noted, "lies chaotic before us" due to a welter of "statutes, decisions of the courts, Orders in Council, and vague traditions."2 Jenks was far from alone in his exasperation. Despite decades of local, regional, and national acts, each tied to the professionalization of a particular field—for example, public health, civil engineering, policing, or librarianship—by the 1880s local government seemed like a tortuous morass that, as socialist John Morrison Davidson put it, "would test the intellect of Mahatma," ... • Victorian Girls' Periodicals and the Challenge of Adolescent Autonomy
    • Abstract: Early in 1885, a girl named Louisa wrote to the Girl's Own Paper to ask "at what age you are at liberty to do exactly as you like."1 Her desire for freedom was echoed by other teenagers writing to girls' magazines during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Fourteen-year-old Ruth likewise claimed the right to "exercise her own judgment"; Miriam, to be "independent and self-reliant"; Annie and May, to be understood to "know our own minds."2 A young reader using the pseudonym "Stick in the Mud" put it most bluntly: "I will do anything, however hard, to have my own way."3Adult editors responded to these voices with consistent and definitive dismissals. Louisa was told that she was "utterly incompetent … to be ... Read More

  • "I am not going on": Negotiating Christmas Publishing Rhythms with
           Dickens's Mugby Junction
    • Abstract: In 1866, Charles Dickens added Mugby Junction, the eighth and penultimate extra Christmas number of his weekly periodical All the Year Round, to an inundated seasonal publishing market. As he prepared for its publication, he wrote to Wilkie Collins that he was "in Christmas Labour" and declared to George Russell that he was a "prisoner to the Xmas No."1 Nearly two years later, in July 1868, he was "in a positive state of despair about the Xmas No."2 I want to suggest that Mugby Junction reveals just what provoked this pain, pressure, and eventual despair.Annual Christmas publications demanded Dickens's attention for many years. Following A Christmas Carol, he produced four more Christmas books during the 1840s, and ... Read More

  • Journalism behind Bars: Bethell's Anti-Japanese English-Korean Newspapers
    • Abstract: In its June 5, 1908 issue, the Diamond Fields Advertiser, a newspaper based in South Africa, reprinted a telegram it had received from Seoul which reported that the "Japanese Resident General of Korea [had] arraigned an English journalist named [Ernest Thomas] Bethell on a charge of sedition."1 The Diamond provided no additional comments on the case. However, the title of its report—"A Too Free Pen"—spoke volumes. Indeed, Bethell had been rather free in his journalistic endeavours from the beginning. • "Here, I Could Rove at Will": Harriet Martineau, Sartain's Union Magazine,
and Freedom in the Transatlantic Periodical Press
    • Abstract: Given her prodigious periodical legacy, it is no surprise that Harriet Martineau has received consistent critical attention in periodical studies, especially for her writing on slavery, women's issues, and the industrial economy. Her work in the 1850s—a decade in which she commented on all of these subjects and more—has been well mined. Still, her Lake District writings of the same period have received less scrutiny. A group of writings that focus their attention on natural scenery and tourist sites, they might at first seem far removed from the issues of the day with which Martineau was so often engaged and as such have engendered few critical investigations. Alexis Easley constitutes the major exception with her ... Read More

  • Advertisements, Hyper-Reading, and Fin de Siècle Consumer Culture in the
Illustrated London News and the Graphic
    • Abstract: Ubiquitous in the public urban landscape of late Victorian Britain, advertisements took many forms, including signs, bills, posters, leaflets, trading cards, sandwich boards, tram tickets, chalked and painted murals, and even theatre safety curtains.1 However, few media brought advertisements into the private sphere. Because periodicals had this privileged access, they were particularly important to the promotion of goods and services in an emerging consumer culture. As print journalism grew in scale, diversity, and aesthetic sophistication, so, too, did its advertisements: within a few decades, the typical advertising page in an illustrated weekly evolved from a block of dense, minimally illustrated letterpress ... • Victorian Periodical Publishing and Ethical Debates: Subjectivity,
Evidence, and the Formation of Ethos
    • Abstract: Writing on "Ethics" for the Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1878, Henry Sidgwick lamented that the field of ethics had become amorphous: "It is not easy to define in a single phrase the subject commonly called Ethics in such a manner as to meet with general acceptance."1 Yet the topic was ubiquitous in nineteenth-century print culture.2 From 1800 to 1901, approximately 300 books and 200 periodical essays explored some aspect of the topic.3 Of these, 80 percent were published after 1860. In this respect, the expansion of periodical publishing in the 1860s and 1870s was an especially important factor in the dissemination of the discourse on ethics. In this article, I first explore how periodical publishing highlighted ... Read More

  • The Birth and Growth of Victorian Periodicals Newsletter and the Research
           Society for Victorian Periodicals
    • Abstract: In 1957, Professor Walter E. Houghton of Wellesley College published, to great acclaim, The Victorian Frame of Mind. It was a brilliant analysis of Victorian literary culture, but it did not mention periodical material, even in a footnote. It later became clear to him that the enormous body of Victorian periodical literature was valuable and should be catalogued, evaluated, and analyzed. Likewise, the anonymous contributions to these periodicals needed to be attributed to their rightful authors. In 1966, Houghton published a second book, the first in the history of literary criticism ever to be devoted entirely to Victorian periodical literature: The Wellesley Index to Periodical Literature.1 In the first volume ... • Bernard Shaw, W. T. Stead, and the New Journalism: Whitechapel, Parnell,
Titanic, and the Great War by Nelson O'Ceallaigh Ritschel (review)
    • Abstract: Nelson O'Ceallaigh Ritschel's Bernard Shaw, W. T. Stead, and the New Journalism: Whitechapel, Parnell, Titanic, and the Great War is the latest addition to the "Bernard Shaw and His Contemporaries" Palgrave Macmillan series edited by O'Ceallaigh Ritschel and Peter Gahan. O'Ceallaigh Ritschel's background as a Shaw scholar heavily informs the subject matter of this book, which uses W. T. Stead as a foil to define Shaw's journalism in opposition to the New Journalism. Shaw is presented to the reader as a voice of reason and rationalism, a man who fights bravely against the tide of his sensationalizing, sex-obsessed contemporaries. In his introduction, O'Ceallaigh Ritschel makes the bold claim that Shaw's journalism ... • The Social Life of Criticism: Gender, Critical Writing, and the Politics
of Belonging by Kimberly J. Stern (review)
    • Abstract: In The Social Life of Criticism, Kimberly Stern reimagines the position of the female critic in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While previous scholarship has portrayed female critics as either integral to or excluded from the profession, Stern maintains that the truth is somewhere in between. This claim is a risky one since she is arguing against extremes. Instead of hedging, however, Stern smartly transforms her argument about liminality into a trans-historical examination of diversity and exclusion in the world of periodical criticism. She writes that "struggle, ambivalence, and discursive strain" have always characterized the relationship between criticism and gender and continue to do so: "We need not ... Read More

  • Thomas Hardy's Short Stories: New Perspectives by Juliette Berning
Schaefer and Siobhan Craft Brownson (review)
    • Abstract: Most critical attention to Thomas Hardy's fiction has understandably focused on the novels, which remain fascinating examples of traditional realist technique employed for non-traditional social critique. Thomas Hardy's Short Stories: New Perspectives, edited by Juliette Berning Schaefer and Siobhan Craft Brownson, is the first edited collection devoted to Hardy's short fiction. It aims to "refresh readers' sense of Hardy's professionalism in all the genres he practiced, and to show that he evolved as a practitioner of the long and short fictional forms at the same time" (7). Divided into four parts—"Periodical Publication," "Gender Relationships," "Community Relationships," and "Narrative Technique"—this volume ... Read More
