Read More

  • The Footprint Fallacy: Celestina’s Resistance to Intention
    • Abstract: One must ask how a critic expects to get an answer to the question about intention. How is he to find out what the poet tried to do' If the poet succeeded in doing it, then the poem itself shows what he was trying to do. And if the poet did not succeed, then the poem is not adequate evidence, and the critic must go outside the poem for evidence of an intention that did not become effective in the poem.Criticism of Celestina frequently turns on external questions such as genre (Webber; Gilman, The Art; Herrick; Severin; Fraker; Lawrance; Pattison, “Celestina”), originality and influences (Lida de Malkiel, La originalidad; Heller and Grismer; Deyermond, Petrarchan Sources; Ayllón, “Petrarch;” Fothergill-Payne) ... • Jorge Guillén in Post-Exile: Reaffirming the Ethical Dimension of
           Poetry
    • Abstract: Jorge Guillén (1893–1984) gave the impression of putting an end to Aire nuestro, the complete collection of his works, in 1968 with the publication of Homenaje, the third part of the collection, after Cántico (1928) and Clamor (1963). However, he would still publish Y otros poemas (1973) and Final (1981). Critics who have analyzed what Y otros poemas and Final mean in Guillén’s career have highlighted the poetic voice’s new process of self-reflection.
(1808–1928) by Felipe Martínez Pinzón (review)
Read More

Argentina, Chile, y Uruguay (1980–2001) by Veró Nica Garibotto (review)

    • Abstract: Why does the nineteenth century continue to figure in Southern Cone culture of the late twentieth century' Why does it re-emerge in contemporary literature and culture with an iconicity that foregrounds the stereotypes of the area—gauchos, soldiers, British travelers, military heroes, captive women, and bellicose Indians' Why, in different moments of crisis since the 1990s—postdictatorship, democratization, postdemocratization—have the tropes of these foundational fictions appeared again and again' In her insightful and intelligent book, Crisis y reemergencia, Verónica Garibotto does not just ask why, but also how. How are the discursive tropes of the nineteenth century reanimated in contemporary culture, and what ... Read More

  • Mexican Melodrama: Film and Nation from the Golden Age to the New Wave by
           Elena Lahr-Vivaz (review)
    • Abstract: For most film scholars, Mexico and melodrama have been joined metonymically for decades, a bit like the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) and Los Pinos presidential palace. Offering a readily recognizable narrative structure and cinematic mise-en-scène conventions—with more emphasis on the former in most studies than the latter—melodrama provides a certain shorthand for discussions of nationalism and identity that, after a while, reiterate comfortable phrases which seem to change little, even as Mexico undergoes monumental shifts in economics, legal debates, and educational reform. So what might a reader find in the promise of an innovative vision of Mexican cinema in the subtitle of this slim volume, “Film ... • New Maricón Cinema: Outing Latin American Film by Vinodh Venkatesh
           (review)
    • Abstract: New Maricón Cinema traces a genealogy of queer Latin American film while providing a robust theorization of themes, techniques, and aesthetics of this genre. Divided into three main parts (Maricón, New Maricón, and Rematerializing Bodies and the Urban Space.), the book’s ten chapters and introduction provide a panoramic and yet rigorous analysis of those emblematic pieces of cinematography that have shaped the representation of gender difference in Latin America. Each of the three parts opens with a brief note that allows the author to contextualize the analysis of the films treated in the corresponding chapter. Incorporating a wide array of films that range from 1978 to 2014, Venkatesh thus embarks on a detailed ... Read More

  • The Merchant of Havana: The Jew in the Cuban Abolitionist Archive by
           Stephen Silverstein (review)
    • Abstract: The “imaginary” Jew—the conceptual, mythical, composite Jew—introduced in various other national and historical settings, had yet to be developed in Cuba’s nineteenth-century context of abolitionism and the rise of industrial capitalism, prior to Steven Silverstein’s The Merchant of Havana. The “notional” Jew, as Silver-stein calls him here, as elsewhere, served as a reviled figure onto which political, economic, and cultural anxieties flowed. Furthermore, as is often the case, the imaginary Jew in Cuba emerged despite the fact that Cuba’s Jewish population was numerically insignificant, that Cubans exhibited little evidence of institutionalized anti-Semitism, and that historical records reveal a negligible number ...
