  • Introduction: The Mexican Literary Archive
    • Abstract: After years of public hearings and months of heated debates between academics, civil servants, politicians, and members of NGOs and civil society, the Mexican Senate unanimously approved the Ley General de Archivos on December 13, 2017. According to the press release issued by the Senate, the new law "Fomenta el resguardo, difusión y acceso público de archivos privados de relevancia histórica, social, cultural, científica y técnica de la Nación" ("Aprueba"). Among the many issues that were at stake in the public discussions around the bill, the most important one dealt with how much the Mexican government would be able to intervene in the development and preservation of archives, and how much it could regulate ... • Colonial Archives on the Move: Mexican Manuscripts Read out of Context
Published in 1873, seven years before his other bestselling historical novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ, Lew Wallace's The Fair God, or, The Last of the 'Tzins: A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico establishes as its premise that the author had translated a series of documents written by "Fernando de Alva, a noble Tezcucan" (xi). In the fictional tale, these documents were found among other colonial documents and were intended to offer a more complete rendition of native history. The premise is not unusual for historical fiction—there is a frame story that roots the narrative in historical sources and events. What is unusual is that this nineteenth-century US novel ... • The Indigenous Archive: Religion and Education in Eighteenth-Century
           Mexico
    • Abstract: On a warm Thursday morning in the month of May of 2015, I was given the privilege of seeing the entirety of the Franciscan Convent of Corpus Christi's archive in Mexico City, which I hadn't been allowed to see before. This was the first convent to accept indigenous women to become nuns in colonial Mexico; it opened its doors in 1724. I had established a relationship with the nuns living in the convent more than fifteen years earlier, and I had visited the convent regularly since then. And yet, during all these years they had only brought me a few files at a time, only of things that had been referenced by other scholars, and had never let me take pictures of the documents. That night I sat on the edge of my bed in ... Read More

Read More

Read More

  • Archives, Libraries, Collections, and Databases: A First Look at Digital
           Literary Studies in Mexico
    • Abstract: In her lyric discussion of historical archives, Dust: The Archive and Cultural History, Carolyn Steedman includes a short passage in which she draws a suggestive parallel between historiography and magical realism—a form of writing "in which a girl flies, a mountain moves, the clocks run backward, and where … the dead walk among the living" (150). Steedman's invocation of Jules Michelet's mythical archival dream of "making the dead walk and talk" is a compelling starting point to think about what makes a digital literary archive, the scholarly work demanded and facilitated by them, their creation, scope, and ultimately, their cultural relevance. If making the dead walk and talk was the original dream of working on ... Read More

  • Poéticas del devenir: Lispector y Valenzuela by Fátima R.
           Nogueira (review)
Read More

           by Médar Serrata (review)
Read More

  • México's Nobodies: The Cultural Legacy of the Soldadera and Afro-Mexican
Women by B. Christine Arce (review)
    • Abstract: After 1920, Mexico's postrevolutionary regime gradually crafted an official national history. As in older versions, men were the main actors. As an added novelty, it idealized the process of mestizaje. This book examines cultural representations of women apparently at the margins of this national story. First, the soldaderas: poor camp followers who accompanied revolutionary and federal armies in the 1910s, cooked, nursed, secured supplies, sold sexual services, buried the dead, entered into common-law unions, and occasionally took up arms and earned military rank themselves. Second, black and mulata women, as they appear in colonialera legends, Golden Age cinema, and popular music. The central question Arce poses ... Read More

  • Farm Worker Futurism: Speculative Technologies of Resistance by Curtis
           Marez (review)
    • Abstract: Farm Worker Futurism: Speculative Technologies of Resistance compellingly brings into view a plethora of visual and audiovisual interventions in a contested mediascape. Curtis Marez's superb critique traces the history of agribusiness's speculative imaginary and farm workers' appropriation of visual technologies from the 1940s to the present. Bracketed by a substantial introduction and an extensive afterword, Farm Worker Futurism's three detailed chapters offer nuanced readings of the narrative, visual, and audiovisual creations, performances, popular culture, and advertisements that have been a part of the labor struggle in California. Marez clearly articulates complex intersections between capital, patriarchy ... Read More
