  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: Issue 50(2) presents five studies on music of East and Southeast Asia. All articles touch on the common theme of the efficacy of the emic and the etic gaze. Cultural practices cannot be fully understood using Western (etic) paradigms and rationales: for example, to decode the meanings of cash exchange for street singers in Wuhan in the article by Horlor or to analyze a mixed-media ceremony of the Kaili as discussed by Santaella. The contrast of rural space and urban space is a second theme, as Ishiguro discusses for traditional Acehnese performance, Hill problematizes for Tsugaru-jamisen, and coauthors Adler and Wong imply for the royal funeral ceremonies in Thailand. Each contribution, while related to these ... Read More

  • Neutralizing Temporary Inequities in Moral Status: Chinese Street Singers
           and the Gift Economy
    • Abstract: It is a weekday afternoon, October 11, 2014, on a street in Wuhan, China. Five female singers are struggling to establish an attentive audience as they take turns performing famous Chinese pop songs for passersby. The local police in this provincial capital city have recently moved the organizers of this informal show on from their usual location in a small green space, responding to complaints from nearby residents about the noise. Today, they have set up for the first time on a wide but busy section of footpath next to a major road and a bus stop, trying out the location as they search for a new home. The organizers have managed to convince these few singers to follow them to this new place today, but several ... Read More

  • "Doing Rano" among the Kaili of Central Sulawesi: A Choreomusicological
Analysis of the Body as Cultural Locus of the Sound-Movement Continuum
    • Abstract: The recent publication Sounding the Dance, Moving the Music revisits academic paradigms and analytical discourses of music and dance as a unitary phenomenon in the extended region conceptualized as Maritime South-east Asia (Mohd Anis and Stepputat 2017). By examining convergences and articulations of movement and sound, it proposes a new field of (ethno-) choreomusicology. In view of the potential that this new discourse offers in the twenty-first century, this article revisits Anglophone conceptualizations of music and dance through an investigation of the interconnectivity of sound, lyric, and movement in rano. A customary tradition among the Kaili ethnic group of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, rano is based on the ... Read More

  • Asakusa-Tsugaru-jamisen: Musical Place Making and Conceptual Blending in
           Twenty-First-Century Tokyo
    • Abstract: Seated on a short stool under the glow of small overhead stage lights, Fukui Kōdai positions his shamisen (3-stringed plucked lute) on his lap. From beyond the glow, diners' applause subsides in expectation. Fukui looks around the quaint dining room of his restaurant in satisfaction. It is a rustic space with sunken tables, tatami (woven rice straw) flooring, and simple wooden trim—exactly the old-fashioned yet polished ambience he had sought out as a restaurant and performance space (figs. 1 and 2). He slides his left hand up the solid neck of his instrument and grasps his bachi (plectrum) sturdily in his right. He raises the plectrum, striking the lowest string several times in regular succession, then the middle ... Read More

  • Gifts from the Waves' Cultural Identity, the Rise of Performing Arts
Communities, and Women's Performance Practice in Post-tsunami Aceh
    • Abstract: On December 26, 2004, the Indonesian province of Aceh was hit by a deadly natural disaster, the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and the following tsunami. Thirty percent of the population of Banda Aceh, the capital of the province, was lost, along with many victims from India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand (National Science Foundation 2005). The Acehnese consider the tsunami as one of the landmark moments in the history of Aceh, one that ushered in a new era in Acehnese history and society. In this article, I examine how the performing arts have changed in Banda Aceh since then (2004–16). I discuss how Acehnese performing arts practitioners (musicians and dancers) negotiate their creativity and livelihoods in relation to the ... Read More

He was 88 years old and had reigned since 1946; and at that time he was the longest-reigning monarch in the world. For many Thais, he was the only king they had ever known (fig. 1). A year of public mourning followed. His funeral was held just over a year later, October 25–29, 2017, in a stunning series of rituals both public and private, full of music, dance, chanting, and movement. We offer an overview of the many kinds of performance featured in this historic event. Without question, the funeral of King Rama IX was a historic event full of extraordinary forms of music, some used ... Read More

  • Alain Daniélou: Into the Labyrinth dir. by Riccardo Biadene (review)
    • Abstract: Alain Daniélou: Into the Labyrinth is a biopic dedicated to the renowned French Indologist and musicologist Alain Daniélou (1907–94), who lived in India between the 1930s and the 1960s, where he researched authoritative texts and closely studied the theory and performance practice of Hindustani vocalists and instrumentalists.Watching the very first images of this engaging documentary by Venetian filmmaker Riccardo Biadene, the viewer is carried on the Ganges, at night, with the lights and the mystical atmospheres of Benares (Varanasi), the sacred city of Hinduism. This animated "postcard" is the preamble to a dense, profound film that, inspired by the intense life and professional career of Alain Daniélou, becomes ... Read More

  • Or Haganuz: Gems of Ashkenazi Hazzanut and Yiddish Songs Revived (review)
    • Abstract: Or Haganuz: Gems of Ashkenazi Hazzanut and Yiddish Songs Revived is the first recording of Ashkenazi hazzanut (cantorial compositions from the Eastern European Jewish tradition) issued by the Jewish Music Research Centre (JMRC). The release coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the JMRC. It features arrangements and compositions for piano and voice by the late professor André Hajdu (1932-2016), one of the earliest affiliates of the JMRC. Hajdu (on piano) is joined by cantor Asher Hainovitz. All but one of the melodies on the disc are from an enormous repertoire generated by Eastern European masters of the cantorial art, a repertoire that flourished in the late nineteenth century, finding its ... • Qin Music: Two Recordings
    • Abstract: The Chinese qin or guqin is a central instrument in Chinese music history and a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. These two recordings show its range, depth, and beauty. They would be welcome additions to any music library.Himmelsk Musik för Qin och Xiao / Celestial Music for Qin and Xiao features Deng Hong (qin) and Chen Shasha (xiao). The combination of qin and xiao creates a calm, gentle atmosphere. As one of the lightest, breathiest, and smokiest of Chinese wind instruments, the xiao pairs well with the sparseness and gentility of the qin. Virtuosity is rare and unobtrusive, as in the latter portion of "Flowing Waters" (Liushui), which aptly conveys the rushing and gurgling of a mountain stream. At 54 ... Read More

  • China with a Cut: Globalisation, Urban Youth and Popular Music by Jeroen
           de Kloet (review)
    • Abstract: As a prominent contemporary cultural activity with global influences, popular-music production has been a focused scholarly inquiry in music studies since the latter half of the twentieth century. Using an unusual product, the dakou CDs and tapes—the damaged pop-music recordings produced in the West, later recycled, and smuggled into China—as a compass and as a starting point, Jeroen de Kloet's China with a Cut: Globalisation, Urban Youth and Popular Music innovatively guides readers through the seldom-explored cultural map of rock and rock-generated pop productions in China during the 1990s and 2000s. De Kloet questions the common assumption of viewing the 1990s as purely a declining phase of rock culture in China ... Read More

  • Gender Wayang Music of Bapak I Wayan Loceng from Sukawati, Bali: A Musical
Biography, Musical Ethnography, and Critical Edition by Brita Renée
           Heimarck (review)
    • Abstract: Through scholarly text, a CD, and a critical edition of nine transcriptions in individual parts and full score, this multifaceted work documents the life and repertoire of the renowned gender wayang (Balinese shadow theater music) musician and pedagogue from Sukawati village Bapak I Wayan Loceng. In addition to a biographical account of Pak Loceng's life and detailed information on his distinct musical style and the shadow play tradition in Bali, this edition offers compelling theoretical perspectives on musical biography, musical ethnography, and transcription. Heimarck's theorizing of these topics, along with her critical look at the role of the ethnomusicologist, form the foundation for a new definition of the ... Read More
