  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: Aloha kākou! Issue 49(2) reflects the changing relationships of scholarship and performance over the past six decades in ethnomusicology. One branch of the field, attributed to Ki Mantle Hood and his institute at UCLA, advocates performance learning as a useful avenue for understanding and attaining insight into an unfamiliar musical culture. The "learning to perform as a means to understanding," a research tool principally for the foreign scholar, has transformed over the years. A diversity of positionalities, including such categories as performer-scholar and scholar-performer, is evident among authors in this issue and is informed by globalization, internationalization, and migration. Some researchers do learn to ... • "You Can't Sing Urtyn Duu If You Don't Know How to Ride a Horse": Urtyn
           Duu in Alshaa, Inner Mongolia
    • Abstract: Alshaa is a region located in the most westerly part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (the IMAR) of the People's Republic of China.1 Due to urbanization and relatively recent policy changes, it has become increasingly difficult for Mongols to return to their traditional nomadic herding lifestyle. In 2003, the IMAR legislated a policy known as "Tuimu Huancao" (returning grazing land to grassland), which aimed to improve the environment and reduce the desertification of the grasslands (Zhang and Baoyintaogetao 2010).2 This policy also came into effect in Alshaa where herding areas were fenced off, and, in many cases, herding was no longer permitted. Herders were strongly encouraged to move to the cities from ... Read More

  • Bringing the Music Out, Bringing the Listener In: The Gérong in
           Javanese Gamelan
    • Abstract: At the front of the gamelan, just behind the female singer, sits a group of four men. They are dressed the same as the musicians behind them, but they do not have any instruments, just a collection of small books and pieces of paper. As the gamelan begins to play, they remain impassive and seemingly uninvolved. As the piece slows down, the female singer begins to join the texture of the piece; the men remain still and quiet. The first section of the piece speeds up and moves on toward the second. As the drummer moves to another drum and starts more intricate patterns, the men shift a little, and, as the gong note marks the entry of the new section, they begin to clap. They alternate with each other in an ... Read More

  • Ethnic and Village Unity: Symbolized or Enacted' Lahu Music-Dance and
Ethnic Participation in Ban Musoe, Thailand
    • Abstract: This study applies notions of participatory music (Turino 2008), enjoyment, and "flow" (Csikszentmihalyi 1990) and the semiotically rich and "feelingful" (Keil and Feld 1994, 146) emotional draw of participatory musical engagement to Lahu New Year music-dance to show that the participatory Lahu ten ja khue (music-dance) offers a compelling window into felt, embodied, and expressed Lahu identity.1 In this process, I give a general introduction of the Lahu of northern Thailand and discuss the particular community and its place within ethnographic, political, economic, and agricultural histories of the region. Tourism increasingly impacts lowland/highland relations and centers around the dance, but the dance activity ... Read More

  • Songs of the Saints: Song Paths and Pilgrimage in London's Tamil Hindu
           Diaspora
    • Abstract: Three times a day, the songs of the Tamil saints echo around the interior of the London Sivan Temple. Standing in front of the deities inside the temple, the Brahmin priest performs the pooja worship ritual, chanting Sanskrit mantras, offering flowers and oil lamps to the gods and goddesses. The resident professional temple singer, Oduvar Dhandapani, then turns up the volume on his electronic shruti drone box, stands in front of the deity with hands clasped in a prayer position, and sings the panchapuranam1—a set of five song forms dating from the sixth- to twelfth-century Tamil thirumurai verses devoted to Siva, often referred to as the "Tamil Veda." Each song is sung in a different South Indian raga, meter, and ... Read More

    • Abstract: LeRon James Harrison's article "Gagaku in Place and Practice: A Philosophical Inquiry into the Place of Japanese Imperial Court Music in Contemporary Culture" (Harrison 2017, 4–27) aims to redress a perceived imbalance between the treatment of gagaku 雅楽 and other traditional forms of Japanese music performance in academic writings, reception by popular media, and descriptions by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs 文化庁 (Bunka chō).1 Harrison wants to "provide [an] analysis that does not preconceive gagaku as other" (ibid., 6). And as a practitioner in a gagaku ensemble and a member of a gagaku community, he wishes to demonstrate that gagaku is not a marginalized activity.According to Harrison, certain articles ... • Javanese Gamelan and the West by Sumarsam (review)
    • Abstract: This recent monograph from Sumarsam—the distinguished theorist, historian, and performer of Javanese gamelan music who has taught at Wesleyan University for decades—deals primarily with (1) the impact of Western music and aesthetics on Indonesian performing arts (not only Javanese and not only gamelan) and (2) Western understandings of both the music and the phenomenon of gamelan. He approaches the first topic primarily from the angle of hybridity, while he addresses the second topic first as history (How and when did gamelan come to the West' What did people make of it') and second as an interpretive issue, focusing on what he calls "metaphorical readings of gamelan" (117). The book takes the form of an ... Read More

  • Music and Empire in Britain and India: Identity, Internationalism, and
Cross-Cultural Communication by Bob van der Linden (review)
    • Abstract: In the opening phrase of Bob van der Linden's introduction to Music and Empire in Britain and India, the author states that "music largely remains a neglected subject in the historiography of the British Empire" (1), and to prove his point, he goes on to mention a few standard works on the history of the British Empire, none of which mentions music at all. In fact, he could have added that music is generally not a very prominent subject in historiography. Of course, what is often simply called musicology is actually the history of the European musical tradition, or as one of my colleagues used to say, "the study of dead composers." Curiously and notoriously, culture is strikingly absent in that history. And in the ... Read More

  • Greeted with Smiles: Bukharian Jewish Music and Musicians in New York by
           Evan Rapport (review)
    • Abstract: In Greeted with Smiles, Evan Rapport introduces the vibrant musical culture of a little-known community of Bukharian Jews, which in the last decade of the twentieth century joined the soundscape and ethnic medley of New York. Bukharian Jews, an offshoot of the Babylonian exile (that followed the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE), one of the "lost tribes," have inhabited Central Asia for more than two and a half millennia. The Bukharian Jews fit none of the three established Jewish communities—Ashkenazi from Eastern Europe, Mizrakhi from Arabic lands, and Sephardi, once from Iberia. Like Mizrakhi, Bukharian Jews for centuries have lived among a Muslim majority. But while Mizrakhi speak Arabic as a native ... Read More

  • A Dictionary of Traditional Japanese Musical Instruments: From Pre-history
to the Edo Period by Sumi Gunji and Henry Johnson (review)
    • Abstract: With this dictionary, organologists Sumi Gunji and Henry Johnson offer an extensive compilation of information on musical instruments and sound-producing objects of Japanese music material culture. It is a slightly modified translation of a Japanese-language dictionary published by Gunji in 2006, adjusting the perspective and writing style to suit the scholarly conventions of an English-speaking readership. While there are a number of earlier books in English on Japanese musical instruments, none cover the broad historical scope of this publication nor present the information in such a systematic manner. Gunji and Johnson have focused specifically on so-called traditional Japanese instruments, those that were known ... Read More

  • Made in Japan: Studies in Popular Music ed. by Tōru Mitsui (review)
    • Abstract: Made in Japan provides focused and digestible articles that expand on current literature in English on Japanese popular music. Part of Routledge's Global Popular Music Series (www.globalpopularmusic.net), the text intends to provide "a better understanding of the different approaches in the field of non-Anglophone scholarship" (xi), bringing theoretical work by mostly Japanese scholars to a broader audience. The volume opens with the development of Japanese popular music that results from the rapid influx of Western influence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are several surveys providing a similar overview (IASPM-Japan 1990; Hosokawa 1994; Stevens 2008), but here Mitsui provides a solid ... Read More
