  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: Historical time, whether viewed synchronically or diachronically, continues to be a factor in the development of our field and an analytical frame for the research that we do. Ethnomusicology, particularly in the first half of the twentieth century and in North America, often described itself in contrast to historical musicology as the study of music production of an ethnographic present rather than of music production and icons of a materially documented past. Although this essentialized binary appeared to exclude historical method for the field, it was actually decontextualized—historical methodologies were integrated into a constellation of tools that was becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. The ... Read More

  • In Search of Asylum: Solitary Singing Practice in Koin Norae-Bang by
           Contemporary Korean Young People
    • Abstract: Singing is an expressive practice, with affective and corporeal aspects for people who perform. In many parts of the world, the spread of karaoke has created a venue for individuals and groups to experience singing in new ways, allowing them to express their emotions, feelings, and selves as their daily practice (see Xun and Tarocco 2007; Hosokawa and Mitsui 2001). South Korea is one of the countries in which karaoke has gained widespread popularity as a form of social entertainment. Since it was introduced in the early 1990s, Koreans across the country enjoy karaoke singing as part of their leisure practices. Especially for young people, karaoke singing has become a central leisure activity during adolescence. ... Read More

  • Capturing Sound or History' Understanding the 1928 Minzoku Geijutsu
           Transcription Debate
    • Abstract: In this article, I examine a brief exchange concerning the transcription of Japanese minyō (民謡, folk song) that appeared in the journal Minzoku geijutsu (民俗芸術, Folk performing arts), a monthly journal founded in 1928 by pioneering folklorist Yanagita Kunio (柳田國男, 1875–1962). I consider the implications of transcriptional practices in early twentieth-century Japanese music ethnology for understanding ideas of national identity and the role of "the folk" in a period of rapid, empire-based modernization. One principal in the debate over transcription was Fujii Kiyomi (藤井清水, 1889–1944), a composer in the Western classical style who maintained a strong interest in traditional Japanese music throughout his career; the ... • Mobilities, Experienced and Performed, in Mongolia's Urtyn Duu Tradition
    • Abstract: Yavsan nokhoi yas zuuna. (Only a wandering dog finds a bone.)Finding singers in the course of my fieldwork in Mongolia has always been the main challenge and the most enjoyable part of research, and it has recently become an interesting compass for thinking about the materials I have collected and about research in general. In the Mongolian countryside, where there are neither clear roads nor precise addresses, and where people still live as nomads, my research starts by locating singers. When I ask where a singer is, the most common response, especially in summer when herder-singers are actively moving, is, "Oh, you just missed her [or him]. She [or he] moved a few kilometers 'that' way," pointing across the ... Read More

  • Sound Spectrum Analysis: Ryūteki and Hichiriki Techniques as Performers
of Structure and Mode in Etenraku
    • Abstract: The recorded and live audio evidence of performance practice of gagaku (Japanese Imperial Court music) dates back to 1903 and recordings by record producer Frederick Gaisberg. However, performance history of gagaku repertoire stretches back more than a millennium. Many analytical studies of the tradition have therefore centered on text sources from the Heian period (794–1185) through to the modern period in Japan and have taken the approach of disregarding or removing ornamental techniques of the wind instruments to clarify the structure and modality of the pieces. Laurence Picken (1990) and his doctoral students in particular argued that changes in tempo and treatment of the original Tang melodies occurred during ... Read More

  • Music of Azerbaijan: From Mugham to Opera by Aida Huseynova (review)
    • Abstract: This book traces the different Azerbaijani art-music forms from the mugham through its fusion with Western classical, jazz, and world art music. It is written to introduce this heritage to readers and listeners worldwide. Apart from Inna Narodiskaya's Song from the Land of Fire (2006), it is important to stress that no English-language scholarly literature or research has discussed Azerbaijani musical syncretism in any depth before. As the author states in her introduction, "[T]his is an American book about Azerbaijani music," and it reflects research with many Azerbaijani and American consultants, including a theoretical approach drawn from the work of Bruno Nettl. • Beyond "Innocence": Amis Aboriginal Song in Taiwan as an Ecosystem by Shzr
           Ee Tan (review)
    • Abstract: The Amis people, of Austronesian descent, are one of Taiwan's 16 officially recognized indigenous groups. Very little scholarly work has been published in English on Taiwan aboriginal music; publications in Chinese have been uneven in quality. Beyond "Innocence" is especially welcome because of its comprehensive nature and because it allows an international readership to access information about this rich musical culture. As the title of the book indicates, Tan proposes that Amis song be best understood as an ecosystem. Aiming to eschew the limits of linear analysis, she crafts her study to illuminate the crisscrossing, multidimensional network of the complex relationships involved in Amis musical creativity and, by ... • The Fighting Art of Pencak Silat and Its Music: From Southeast Asian
Village to Global Movement ed. by Uwe U. Paetzold and Paul H. Mason
           (review)
    • Abstract: The Fighting Art of Pencak Silat and Its Music: From Southeast Asian Village to Global Movement offers detailed explorations of a type of martial art and related dance forms practiced in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and beyond. In their introduction, the editors, Uwe U. Paetzold and Paul H. Mason, identify a tendency of neglecting "[f]ighting, self-defense and physical aggression … in studies of aesthetics," arguing that, "when distilled into performance arts, activities correlated with fighting, self-defense, and physical aggression are able to offer highly meaningful anthropological insights into cultural life" (1). To this end, they have compiled 13 essays from an international roster of scholars from ... Read More

  • Sonic Modernities in the Malay World: A History of Popular Music, Social
Distinction and Novel Lifestyles (1930s–2000s) ed. by Bart Barendregt
           (review)
    • Abstract: Sonic Modernities in the Malay World is about popular music and the discourses and practices of modernity, mainly in Indonesia and Malaysia during the twentieth century, with some additional insights on neighboring countries such as the Philippines and Singapore. Although the five parts follow a chronological structure, allowing a historical outlook on the problematics, they also reflect the perspectives of popular music makers, the entertainment industry, and changing audiences.Bart Barendregt introduces the project, based on musical memories, and crosses many disciplinary fields such as anthropology, history, cultural studies, and musicology. The book converges to the study of the interplay of the popular and ... Read More

  • Gongs & Pop Songs: Sounding Minangkabau in Indonesia by Jennifer A.
           Fraser (review)
    • Abstract: In this richly detailed ethnographic work, Jennifer Fraser explores how people who identify as Minangkabau use a local gong music called talempong (small, bronze kettle gongs) to frame and construct identity in West Sumatra, Indonesia. An important theme of the book is that the arts "actively foster and create ethnic sensibilities" (134). However, within that, Fraser reminds us that it is imperative to recognize localized difference within moments of ethnic sameness. Talempong music is one mechanism that mobilizes such feelings. I have written about talempong in connection with its Malaysian counterpart, cakelempong, and I am happy to see this ethnography now devoted to it (Collins 2002). Using a cognitive approach ... • The Narrative Arts of Tianjin: Between Music and Language by Francesca R.
           Sborgi Lawson (review)
    • Abstract: Originating in the Warring States period and thriving during the Tang dynasty, narrative art has always been an important folk musical genre in Chinese society with both entertaining and educational functions long before modern electronic entertainment devices became widely available. The Han Chinese subcultures in different geographical areas also cultivated their own regional narrative-art genres throughout history. The Tianjin metropolitan area in northern China is particularly well known for its several narrative-art genres of the local style. Lawson chooses a unique perspective to look into the commonly shared musical, historical, and cultural background of multiple narrative genres in a single geographical ... Read More
