  • Japanese Traditional Music: Songs of People at Work and Play by Kokusai
           Bunka Shinkokai (review)
    • Abstract: Japanese Traditional Music: Songs of People at Work and Play is a compilation of music not likely heard outside of academic archives for more than seventy years. The amount of scholarly work done on Japanese music is seemingly endless. From courtly traditions to theater forms, Japanese and foreign scholars have worked in earnest to document the island nation's performing arts for centuries. In the pre– and post–World War II era, many Japanese musicologists documented musics from around Japan to capture sounds thought to be in decline due to changing times. But equally important, these documentations were crafted to present the unique qualities of Japanese traditional genres to the outside world. Much of this ... Read More

  • Flowers, Birds, Wind, Moon: Music by Marty Regan by Duo Yumeno (review)
    • Abstract: Group Duo Yumeno collaborated with composer Marty Regan to attain the goal of this CD, which was released in May 2015: exploring possible dialogues between classical Japanese and Western music by blending each genre's particular performance practices into one cohesive sound.Duo Yumeno blends Western and Japanese music by joining together the talents of cellist Hikaru Tamaki, and koto, shamisen, and vocal performer Yoko Reikano Kimura. Both hold impressive accomplishments within their own fields of expertise. Tamaki served as the principal cellist for both the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and the Chicago Civic Orchestra. Kimura graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and went on to receive first prize at the ... Read More

  • About the Contributors
    • Abstract: Francesca Billeri received a PhD in Music at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS), in 2019 with a dissertation titled "Interrelations among Genres in Khmer Traditional Music and Theatre." She is currently working on a project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and Education and directed by Giovanni Giuriati, on archiving eleventhcentury music from an oral tradition. She is also working as a PhD tutor in schools. In 2009 she carried out research on Khmer wedding music for her master's degree, and in 2013 she organized the first Khmer music workshop at SOAS. • From the Editor
    • Abstract: The previous issue of Asian Music, 51(1), foregrounded individual carriers of a genre as actors for aspects of continuity, innovation, and viability in contrast to framing a genre in terms of a single grand narrative. In a similar vein, the present number, 51(2), decenters the gaze on a musical genre as unified, homogeneous, and canonical. Rather, its four essays explore ways in which a specific locale or ethnie generates variation, innovation, and creativity, which in turn can inform the tradition writ large. The specific locale can be at a periphery, as Bond shows in the localization of Arabic texts in Gujarati South Asia through the performance of Sufi poetry, or even further afield, as Wisuttipat discusses in ... • No Notation Needed: The Construction and Politics of Transnational Thai
Identity through the Oral Transmission of Classical Music
    • Abstract: It was a hot and sunny afternoon when I, along with a group of young Thai American performers, their parents, their instructors, and some guest musicians, arrived at a saalaa Thai—an open pavilion for public use with a raised platform and roof as well as traditionally crafted gold-plated pillars—inside Olbrich Botanical Garden in Madison, Wisconsin, after a two-hour drive from Chicago. The musicians, myself included, immediately began unloading instruments and costumes from a fully packed trailer to prepare for our final rehearsal for Thai Fest 2017.1 While we were setting up the instruments, the young performers, wandering about the place in excitement, were called by their parents to change from shorts and jeans ... • Teaching Islam in Song: Storytelling and Islamic Meaning in Sindhi Sufi
           Poetry Performance
    • Abstract: In February 2018, the kāfī singer and musical storyteller Arab Jat visited me at my apartment in Bhuj, Kachchh, a region in western India adjacent to Sindh, Pakistan.1 We were joined by my friend Asif, a Kachchhi Muslim man who had in recent years developed a passion for the Sindhi Sufi poetry of Shāh ʿAbdul Lat̤īf Bhiṭā'ī (1689–1752 CE, referred to hereafter as Shāh Bhiṭā'ī), and a hereditary musician from western Rajasthan whom I had recently met on a research trip to Jaisalmer and was hosting for a few days. I asked Arab to sing Sur Sorat.h, Shāh Bhiṭā'ī's poetic rendering of events from a story about a hereditary musician named B¨ ījal who plays his surindo (bowed lute) for D¨ iyāc, the ruler of Junagarh, and ... • Continuity and Changes in Cambodian Lkhaon Bassac (Lakhon Baasaq) Opera
    • Abstract: Traditional Cambodian music and popular theater are currently undergoing significant changes and transformations. On one hand, televised theater performances, tourist shows, and the commercialization of traditional music are altering performance practices, instrumentation, functions, and the musical texture of Khmer traditional music. On the other hand, these processes act as means of preservation, promotion, and revival that foster new ways of making music and economic growth. In this paper I examine the sociocultural and economic trends that are affecting traditional music and popular theater performances, with a focus on lkhaon bassac1 theater in terms of instrumentation, function, and performance practice.            Folk Drumming Ensemble in Singapore
    • Abstract: Uṟumi mēḷam originated in Tamil Nadu, South India. Uṟumi is a type of drum, and mēḷam means "ensemble or band." It first appeared in Southeast Asia in Ipoh in the late 1980s and began to spread and became popular in Singapore in the early 2000s (Sykes 2015b, 383). The instrumentation for a Singaporean uṟumi mēḷam group includes two uṟumi drums;1 a vocalist singing through a bullhorn; a tavil;2 a cinna kaḳḳai, the high-pitched drum of the pambai set;3 and a pair of tāḷam cymbals.Uṟumi Mēḷam accompanies Tamil folk religious rituals and ceremonies. While practitioners of Tamil Folk Hinduism have embraced uṟumi mēḷam groups with great respect, support, and enthusiasm, the ensembles often face scrutiny, especially in ... Read More

  • Forbidden Songs of the Pgaz K'Nyau by Suwichan Phattanaphraiwan (review)
    • Abstract: "We are headed for disaster if the Pgaz K'Nyau people do not know tha plue or other songs for the deceased." Community elder Phati Johnni Odochao shares these fears in Chi Suwichan Phattanaphraiwan's insightful book Forbidden Songs of the Pgaz K'Nyau. The loss of tha funeral songs, he continues, may well lead to a loss of a sense of ourselves, our origins, or the true meaning of life. As he puts it, "We would have a life on earth that just floats by, not truly rooted in our own humanity" (48).Forbidden Songs of the Pgaz K'Nyau is a valuable addition to the Ethnomusicology Translations initiative of the Society for Ethnomusicology. In this book, musician and social activist Chi Suwichan Phattanaphraiwan contemplates ... Read More

  • Song King: Connecting People, Places, and Past in Contemporary China by
           Levi S. Gibbs (review)
    • Abstract: In this book, Gibbs introduces the reader to the life and performances of Wang Xiangrong 王向荣 (b. 1952), a high-profile folk "song king" from China's western Shaanxi Province, showing how since the late 1970s, through success in music competitions at all levels, Wang has risen from a rural itinerant singer to one with regional and national fame, transforming local traditions and himself into representations mediating between places, peoples, and periods of time. Taking a biographical account as its basis, Gibbs seeks to show "how one iconic singer has adapted and mediated between different audiences on a micro level in speech and song in specific events and connect[ed] the insights gained to other singers in China ... • Sounding the Dance, Moving the Music: Choreomusicological Perspectives on
Maritime Southeast Asian Performing Arts ed. by Mohd Anis Md Nor and
           Kendra Stepputat (review)
    • Abstract: Sounding the Dance, Moving the Music presents a new discourse on (ethno-) choreomusicology through a music-dance interconnectivity analysis that views both sound and movement systems as single emic structures in maritime Southeast Asia. The implied, and sometimes included, prefix ethno- recognizes antecedent "choreomusical conversations" (Jordan 2011) in American and European performance analyses while simultaneously proposing a look at the music-dance scholarship of non-Western traditions. The choreomusicology discourse emerged, at least conceptually, with Paul Hodgins's (1991) examination of music and dance connections. His book introduced a practical "paradigm for choreomusical analysis" (Hodgins 1992, 25) based ... Read More

  • Musical Minorities: The Sounds of Hmong Ethnicity in Northern Vietnam by
           Lonán Ó Briain (review)
    • Abstract: Hmong populations, belonging to the Hmong-Yao ethnolinguistic family, are settled in several countries of continental Southeast Asia: China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Many also migrated to other continents—primarily North America (United States and Canada) and Europe (especially France). Part of the many minority groups of these Southeast Asian countries, the Hmong and their identity are often clearly and rigidly defined, either by the former colonial power, the local authorities, or neighboring ethnic groups. Due to the community's history and numerous migrations, Hmong culture and music have been described largely by scholars and amateurs in comparison to other ethnic groups of the region. Rare are the ... Read More

  • Women Musicians of Uzbekistan: From Courtyard to Conservatory by Tanya
           Merchant (review)
    • Abstract: After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan became a nation by default instead of by revolution. Creating a national identity was accomplished largely through institutions established by the Soviets—including music conservatories. In Women Musicians of Uzbekistan, Tanya Merchant examines how women shape discourses about Uzbek nationalism by participating in institutionalized music traditions. Merchant constructs each chapter around biographical profiles of women musicians, allowing her to trace historical developments through individual experiences beyond the time constraints of her fieldwork periods. Through these women's experiences, Merchant demonstrates not only how Uzbek music traditions are deeply ... Read More

  • Semionauts of Tradition: Music, Culture, and Identity in Contemporary
Singapore by Juliette Yu-Ming Lizeray and Chee-Hoo Lum (review)
    • Abstract: Semionauts of Tradition: Music, Culture and Identity in Contemporary Singapore, by anthropologist Juliette Yu-Ming Lizeray and music education scholar Chee-Hoo Lum, is a timely book that provides an update on the Singaporean music scene. It contributes to "a deeper understanding of the diverse, fluid, interconnected, and constantly evolving assemblages that make up Singaporean musicians' contemporary identities and creative practice" (8). In this ethnographically rich book, the authors seek to mitigate a balance in power relations between researchers and interlocutors, and accordingly they draw heavily on the voices of their interlocutors in their discussions. In chapter 1, Lizeray and Lum define the theoretical ... • Singing across Divides: Music and Intimate Politics in Nepal by Anna Marie
           Stirr (review)
    • Abstract: Singing across Divides: Music and Intimate Politics in Nepal, by Anna Marie Stirr, is a groundbreaking ethnographic work that explores the sociocultural and political dynamics of the dohori genre of Nepal. The book presents a pioneering ethnomusicological work on dohori and is also the first scholarly work on dohori to come out of the Nepalese civil war period and subsequent state reconstruction (1996–2015). Although the author does not mention dohori in the title, the entire book focuses on this dialogic singing genre originating from rural Nepal, which gained tremendous popularity in commercial form due to migration and media circulation beginning in the late 1990s. The book primarily covers the dohori singing ... Read More
