  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: Aloha kakou! An important milestone for any field of inquiry is the evidence of a balance between “discovery” of the new and a critical “revisiting” of established knowledge. For some, self-reflection is a sign of maturity of the field; and for others, an indication of dearth in content. Although we as individual scholars may arrange ourselves at various points along such a continuum, the value of self-reflection and self-criticism holds general consensus. Asian Music 48(1) presents challenges of revisiting established knowledges, to wit, gagaku, the Japanese iemoto system, coastal cultures along western Malaysia and Thailand, the contemporary recording industry in India, and the documentation of Southeast ... • Gagaku in Place and Practice: A Philosophical Inquiry into the Place of
Japanese Imperial Court Music in Contemporary Culture
    • Abstract: Gagaku, Japanese imperial court music, is one of the oldest forms of Japanese music and is often called the oldest form of orchestral music in existence. The music and dances it comprises fall into two categories: (1) music and dances indigenous to Japan and (2) music and dances imported from the Asian continent as early as the fifth century CE. The entire body of music was placed under the control of an Imperial Music Bureau (gagakuryō) in 701. In the ninth century the imperial court reorganized the music to accommodate fewer players in the wake of declining contact with the continent; by the fourteenth century gagaku was performed and passed down among the musical families of the bureau, noblemen who had ... • Rethinking Iemoto: Theorizing Individual Agency in the Tsugaru Shamisen
           Oyama-ryū
    • Abstract: It is almost unthinkable to discuss the social dimensions of cultural practices of traditional Japanese performing arts, such as the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, musical genres, theater, dance, and martial arts, without considering the power of iemoto and ryūha (school). Indeed, a large body of English- language literature on these Japanese performing arts has discussed iemoto systems and schools in a variety of case studies since the late 1960s (Ortolani 1969; Weisgarber 1968). An iemoto has been represented as a headmaster of a ryūha who holds authority to strictly control sociocultural practices of its members. An iemoto, for instance, controls members’ performance techniques and produces repertoires ... Read More

  • Across Borders and Genres in Malaysia and Thailand: The Changgong Rhythm
           of the Andaman Sea Coast
    • Abstract: Changgong is today an iconic Malay folk song and dance of Perlis, a small principality tucked in the northwestern corner of peninsular Malaysia.1 It is a fairly young tradition that descends from a popular social dance of the mid-twentieth century and connects more broadly to pan-Malayan entertainment trends of the same era. Changgong is still extant, though there are much fewer of its violin, frame drum, and gong ensembles than a half century ago (see Rejab 1962). The art of singing Changgong in spontaneously composed pantun, “rhymed quatrains,” has become mostly lost. Its mixed-sex couple dancing has died out or gone underground in the face of stricter Islamic moral codes. What remains of Changgong for the most ... Read More

  • A Long Tail in the Digital Age: Music Commerce and the Mobile Platform in
           India
    • Abstract: Most of the success of the music industry, which we’ve only just found out, is because of the long tail, having a big catalogue. Unlike the relatively small number of big hits in any music market, most of the songs available for consumption in any given week, month, or year attract relatively modest sales. On a sales graph, those songs form the “long tail,” the numerous lists of songs or recordings that follow behind, in ever-lower numbers of sales, the usually much smaller group of high-earning hits. All companies who produce and own recorded music have tails of some length, “back catalogues” of recordings that have sold (and may continue to sell) in limited quantity and that may in fact be in such low ... • More Than Bollywood: Studies in Indian Popular Music ed. by Gregory D.
           Booth, Bradley Shope (review)
    • Abstract: Both scholars and the general public often reduce Indian popular culture to cinema and especially Bollywood. In regard to music, the focus for decades has been on film scores, from the classical songs of 1950s and 1970s Bolly-wood movies to their contemporary versions, which have increasingly incorporated Western features such as bass sounds, rock music, or electro. But Indian popular musical life includes a variety of national and regional genres beyond Bollywood. Filmi music and its regional versions have mostly long remained under the radar of the international music industry and popular music studies. Academic interest in this topic was sparked by Peter Manuel’s seminal 1988 article in Popular Music ... Read More

  • The Songs of Khayal by Nicolas Magriel (review)
    • Abstract: This fabulous set of two encyclopedic volumes, book 1 with an analysis of khayal songs (bandishes) and book 2 with transcriptions of almost five hundred compositions from commercial recordings, makes a dream acquisition for anyone involved in the study of khayal, the predominant vocal genre of North Indian art music. Whether as a listener, connoisseur, musicologist, linguist, student, teacher, or performer of Hindustani music, there is plenty of material to delve into. Recordings were chosen from 1902 to the late 1970s of prominent vocalists representing various stylistic schools (gharanas). Magriel has analyzed and transcribed the music while Du Perron discusses and contributes the lyrics in both Devanagari ... Read More

  • Sounding Out Heritage: Cultural Politics and the Social Practice of Quan
Họ Folk Song in Northern Vietnam by Lauren Meeker (review)
    • Abstract: Anthropologist Lauren Meeker’s study of northern Vietnamese folk song (quan họ) in Sounding Out Heritage adds to scholarship on cultural heritage in Asia by balancing detailed evaluations of historical sources with poignant ethnographic description. Meeker adroitly plots rapid changes in practice, keeping her observations relevant and supported by current anthropological research on Vietnam. She tells the story of quan họ’s development from embodied social practice in rural village settings to a national art form deployed in various media settings throughout Vietnam. In the introductory chapter, she skillfully sets up the complicated spaces of music production in northern Vietnam where policy writers and ... Read More

  • Embodied Communities: Dance Traditions and Change in Java by Felicia
           Hughes-Freeland (review)
    • Abstract: Felicia Hughes-Freeland’s Embodied Communities: Dance Traditions and Change in Java is the kind of book that gets better the more often you read it and the more familiar you are with its subject. It is impossible to skim, being written with such density, thoroughness, and insight that it might overwhelm readers who have not yet embarked on an intellectual tour into Javanese culture, Indonesian history of the twentieth century, court dance traditions, or issues of embodiment in dance ethnology. Hughes-Freeland, who lived and studied in central Java for many years, is without a doubt immensely knowledgeable about all these aspects relating to the court dance tradition of Yogyakarta. Readers expecting ... Read More

  • Songs from the Edge of Japan: Music-Making in Yaeyama and Okinawa by Matt
           Gillan (review)
    • Abstract: In recent years we have seen the publication of numerous ethnomusicological books on Japanese traditional music, among them Kelly Foreman (2008), Henry Johnson (2010), Terence Lancashire (2011), and Alison McQueen Tokita and David Hughes (2008). This publication by Matt Gillan on the music of the Yaeyama and Okinawa Islands is, however, especially welcome.1 Heretofore there have been few texts on the music of Okinawa and none that we know of on the music of Yaeyama.2 Despite its title, Gillan’s book places much more emphasis on the music of Yaeyama and discusses Okinawan music, specifically of Okinawa Island, mainly as an influence on the former (only one chapter is given over completely to Okinawan music). ... • Composing Japanese Musical Modernity by Bonnie C. Wade (review)
    • Abstract: This book is about the development of modern Japanese art music and the individuals, institutions, and social factors that have enabled this cultural process, focusing particularly on recent decades but with multiple references to a longer historical perspective. Wade’s research is less concerned with the works of specific composers than on composing as a social role and on how musical modernity has been achieved and sustained in Japan. References to the careers of numerous composers are made throughout the book to offer a general assessment of the position of composers in Japan. Musical modernity is framed as a generalized condition, a process involving “the indigenization of Western music in Japan” (4) and ... Read More

  • Kulintang: Gong Music from Mindanao in the Southern Philippines (2011, 23
minutes) and Maranao Culture at Home and in the Diaspora (2012, 33
           minutes) (review)
    • Abstract: The films contextualize kulintang music of the Maranao, the Philippines’ largest Muslim minority group, with differing degrees of emphasis. Kulintang: Gong Music from Mindanao in the Southern Philippines focuses on music making by including six complete kulintang performances to demonstrate a variety of styles. Maranao Culture at Home and in the Diaspora presents kulintang music as one facet in a myriad of traditions slowly fading in the modernizing of lives of the Maranao. I review both films together since they utilize some of the same footage from a single research trip in March 2008 by Usopay H. Cadar, a native Maranao, and Yoshitaka Terada, a professor in the Department of Advanced Studies in ... Read More

  • Besktekâr III. Selim Hân/Composer Sultan Selim Khan III by Ayangil Tϋrk
Mϋziği Orkestra ve Korosu Solistleri (review)
    • Abstract: This exceptional CD set honors the two-hundredth anniversary of the death of Sultan Selim III in 1808. Homage to Ottoman arts is evident in the meticulous attention to detail in both the visual design and the subtlety of the performances. Selim III (1761–1808), who reigned for 17 years, was a political reformer, Mevlevi Sufi, composer, and poet who studied music with the sultan’s chief müezzin (reciter of the call to prayer) and tanbur (long-necked plucked lute) with synagogue cantor Tanburi Izak. Although he received a palace education, he spent some of his youth in confinement in the palace kafes (literally, cage), an Ottoman tradition that attempted to prevent brothers of the sultan from engaging in ... • Longing for the Past: The 78 rpm Era in Southeast Asia by David Murray
           (review)
    • Abstract: Longing for the Past is an elegantly produced and copiously illustrated book-and-CD package. The four CDs contain digital transfers of commercial 78 rpm recordings made in mainland and island Southeast Asia, two-thirds of them before World War II. It is a very welcome Southeast Asian instance of the revived interest in recordings from the first half of the twentieth century, before field recording became a normal practice for anthropologists and ethnomusicologists. It is not clear, however, precisely what audience this collection is aimed at. On the one hand, it is a coffee-table book with audio, designed to be dipped into but not studied, and on this level it definitely succeeds, presenting unfamiliar ... Read More
