  • From the Editor
    • Abstract: Aloha kākou! Issue 48(2) embodies a range and variety of scholarship about music and related expressive arts in Asia, the principal mission of the journal. Asian Music indexes current interests in ethnomusicology, references critical issues in Asian area studies, and is the most visible organ of the Society for Asian Music, which is the journal's "parent" organization. The five major articles and five reviews in this issue collectively engage sonic properties, ontologies, social issues, histories and memories, and ways of meaning making for music among expressive cultures in Asia. We also use this issue as a moment for celebrating two accomplishments: the colorful and productive career of a colleague whose essay ... Read More

  • Looking Back on 50 Years of Fieldwork in Afghanistan and Pakistan (Society
for Asian Music 2016 Keynote Address)
    • Abstract: This year, 2016, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the start of my fieldwork as an ethnomusicologist.1 Looking back, I can't believe how fast those 50 years whizzed by; how fortunate I was in finding my way to Afghanistan and Pakistan, less by determination and planning than on circumstances beyond my control; and how fortuitous it was to meet strangers on whose kindness I readily depended, strangers who became good friends and teachers or guides who helped me navigate the musical cultures of their worlds.Looking back has allowed me to gain a historical perspective that includes dramatic changes in the political situations and socioreligious relationships that have occurred in the places where I conducted my ... • Improvisation, Creativity, and Agency in South Indian Temple Rāga
           Performance
    • Abstract: Musical improvisation has been predominantly explained through the lens of musicians' preparation. As in other domains of knowledge engaged with orality and performance, music scholars have focused their attention on the text of the performance rather than the performance itself, on the "creative product" rather than the "creative process" (Sawyer 2000, 149). As a result, the emphasis has been put on the identification and description of the technical materials that musicians actually require for improvising: knowledge base (Siron 1992; Berliner 1994), repertoires (Becker and Faulkner 2009), and what have been called "toolkit" (Reck 1983) or "models" by ethnomusicologists (Nettl 1974, 1998, 2009; Lortat-Jacob 1987 ... • Talking about Mode in Malang, East Java
    • Abstract: As had happened repeatedly during my field research in the Malang area of east Java, a mistaken assumption on my part about similarities between east and central Javanese gamelan music sparked a conversation with my principal gamelan teacher, Kusnadi, in which he helped me understand east Javanese music through what he situated as an east Javanese lens (see Sunardi 2010a, 227; 2010b, 99–104). This time it was about mode. I had learned from my studies of central Javanese gamelan music in Yogyakarta and California prior to conducting fieldwork in east Java that in the conventional central Javanese system used in the palaces, arts academies, radio stations, and other institutions for central Javanese gamelan ... • "Vande Mataram!": Constructions of Gender and Music in Indian Nationalism
    • Abstract: "Vande Mataram!" A deafening echo erupts from the assembled masses. "Jai Hindustan!" Again the crowd roars, hoping to sonically crush their ideological enemies across the gates. "Hindustan Zindabad!" Cresting the tops of two half-stadiums wave dozens of flags, and in between march face-to-face a powerful display of Indian and Pakistani military pomp. "Jai Ho!" Electronic beats pummel the small Punjabi town of Wagah, where on the Indian side, women dance and take turns charging the border fence proudly bearing the symbols of their nation.Translated as "hail to the mother," "Vande Mataram"—the song and slogan—has a long and controversial history as one of the most powerful symbols of India's independence movement. ... • Freedom, Margins, and Music: Performance as Development Discourse in Nepal
    • Abstract: In early January 2013, I received a phone call from Ekraj Chaudhary, the manager of a small radio station called Gurubaba FM. Located in the bazaar town of Bansagadhi in Nepal's southwest district of Bardiya, this radio station aired Tharu-language programs, ranging from news reports to social advocacy programs, and annually sponsored several live cultural events. Ekraj invited me to attend the maghauta nāc competition Gurubaba FM was hosting in a few weeks. At that time, I knew the maghauta nāc was the song-and-dance genre associated with Māghī, the Tharu New Year celebration that falls mid-January.1 My interlocutors at my primary research site in Dang district had told me that Māghī celebrations focused on ... • Illicit Worlds of Indian Dance: Cultures of Exclusion by Anna Morcom
           (review)
    • Abstract: Anna Morcom's Illicit Worlds of Indian Dance: Cultures of Exclusion explores the place of hereditary communities of female and transgender dancers within the modern history of North Indian public culture. This book adds to a growing body of academic literature that has investigated the erasure of marginalized artistic communities as a result of Indian nationalist music and dance projects of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (Allen 1997; Babiracki 1991; Manuel 1986; Qureshi 2006; Soneji 2012; Walker 2014). Morcom's work expands the scope of these studies, tracing a history of "exclusion/inclusion" in Indian performing arts from the late colonial period to the present. Her analysis illuminates the ... • Le chant des serpents: Musiciens itinérants du Kerala (Singing of the

    • Abstract: This is the first ethnography in a European language, to my knowledge, that discusses at length the activities of the following low-ranking Hindu castes in Kerala, India: Puḷḷuvans, who manage the serpent god propitiation ritual Pāmpin Tuṇlḷal; Pān.ans, who conduct a genre called tuyilun.arttu pāt.t.u, or "awakening song"; and Maṇn.āns, who perform for rituals for the mother-goddess Bhagavati and the ferocious deity Cāttan. Gilles Tarabout's (1986) and Laurent Aubert's (2004) mammoth tomes, Sacrifier et donner à voir en pays Malabar (Sacrifice and visual offering in the region of Malabar) and Les feux de la déesse (Fires of the goddess), respectively, cover genres practiced by these and other comparable Kerala ... • Stunning Males and Powerful Females: Gender and Tradition in East Javanese
           Dance by Christina Sunardi (review)
    • Abstract: Christina Sunardi's Stunning Males and Powerful Females adds to a growing body of literature at the intersections of gender, performance, and music. Her choice of Indonesia, specifically a small city in East Java called Malang, as a site to explore gender, power, and dance proves especially productive. Indonesia is not only historically rich in the performing arts; it is also a country where strict conceptions of gender roles are policed through local customs and mass media and by state and religious authorities. Conversely, the politics of identity and gender are continuously negotiated in both public and private spheres, especially in the performing arts. Java also has an extensive history of cross-gender dance. ... Read More

           Ted Tsung-Te Tsai (review)
Ted Tsung-Te Tsai (蔡宗德), an ethnomusicologist of Indonesian and Islamic music, is one of the few scholars in Taiwan who studies the music culture of Southeast Asia. His earlier works examine the Islamic music tradition in Indonesia as well as in Chinese Turkestan. The present study, Yinsheng, yishi yu yiliao 音聲、儀式與醫療 (Sound, ritual, and medicine) is the first ethnomusicological work in Chinese that considers the role of music in the folk-healing traditions of Java. The book uses Javanese Islamic and ... Read More

  • Bali 1928, Volumes 1–5 (review)
    • Abstract: The Bali 1928 Project, directed by Edward Herbst, is a monumental repatriation effort involving the remastering and republication of many hours of music and film produced in Bali, Indonesia, between 1928 and 1938.1 It is the most important publication of media from Indonesia since the release by Smithsonian Folkways of the 18-volume Music in Indonesia series (1992–99) recorded and annotated by Philip Yampolsky. Herbst's research is informed by fieldwork in Bali beginning in 1972, and his dedication to this decade-long project is inspiring. In addition to multiple extended trips to Indonesia during this time, Herbst worked for eight years to obtain permissions from archives around the world to rerelease the ... Read More
