  • PEN/Hemingway Keynote Address: Delivered at the John F. Kennedy Library 10
           April 2016
    • Abstract: For novelists and short story writers, this is an age of extremes. On the one hand, there’s an enormous production and consumption of fiction, from the Pulitzer Prize winners to a popular hybrid that might be renamed Fifty Shades of Hunger Games. Fiction, from the most popular to the more rarified, still retains a fair amount of its old prestige. On the other hand, we’re living in an age that exhibits a certain amount of hostility to fiction writing and storytelling, even when, or especially when, it thinks it is praising fiction. This hostility comes in two large forms—utilitarianism and distraction. Both, in different but overlapping ways, menace the writing and reading of serious literature and seek to ... Read More

  • Don Ernesto en Pamplona: 1924 and 1927
    • Abstract: Oddly enough, it was Gertrude Stein who first sent Ernest and Hadley Hemingway to Pamplona in early July 1923 for the annual Fiesta of San Fermín, a weeklong revel with corridas every afternoon and drinking, music, and riau-riau dancing long into the night. Earlier that year, on a trip with Bill Bird and Robert McAlmon, Ernest had seen bullfights in Madrid, Seville, and Ronda, admiring the courage of the bulls and the men who fought them. His enthusiasm only increased at Pamplona, the upland city in Navarre where the best matadors faced fierce sharp-horned Villar bulls. “By God,” he exclaimed, “they have bullfights in that town!” (Baker 110–12). Hemingway came back in each of the next four years ... Read More

  • “Reading Slowly to Make it Last”: Reading Readers in Hemingway’s The
           Garden of Eden
    • Abstract: The severely-excised publication in 1986 of Hemingway’s uncompleted manuscript entitled The Garden of Eden has provided much grist for the Hemingway scholar’s mill. The fact that Tom Jenks (Hemingway’s editor at Scribner’s) paired down nearly two thousand pages to 247 in the final print edition has invited a wide-ranging discussion about not only how the published novel differs from the manuscript, but also how it connects to his biography. Just how wide-ranging and spirited this discussion has been can be easily gleaned from the need for and the contributions of such a remarkable resource as Hemingway’s Garden of Eden: Twenty-Five Years of Criticism. Despite their diverging aims, however, the critical ... Read More

  • Hemingway’s Fishing Rod: A Study of the First African Plane Crash
           and Rescue
    • Abstract: It all started one evening last summer, when I was invited to my neighbors’ house for a curry. Our hosts, Merlyn and Gino, thought I might be interested in a story about Ernest Hemingway. “About Hemingway? Tell me the story.” The story begins with a recollection, a photograph, and a fishing rod. Ernest and Mary Hemingway were stranded near the Murchison Falls in East Africa after their plane crash-landed in 1954. The next morning, they were rescued by a launch sailing down the river. The captain of the launch was Gino’s father. Hemingway gave the skipper his fishing rod as a gesture of thanks, and Mary had her photograph taken with him as a memento. “Oh really, how interesting!” Eventually the ... Read More

  • Not for sale, rent, nor charter”: Paris and the Market for Art in Ernest
           Hemingway’s Islands in the Stream
    • Abstract: In the Hemingway House bookstore in Key West, Islands in the Stream (1970) appears on the shelf designated “Fishing, Hunting and Writing,” only slightly above the shelf marked “Little-Known Hemingway.” The placement fittingly reflects the complexities of categorizing the posthumously published novel. Prepared for publication by Carlos Baker, Charles Scribner Jr., and Mary Hemingway from manuscripts that Hemingway initially worked on from late September 1945 through late December 1951 as part of a “Sea Novel,” the novel as published is comprised of three sections of uneven length, each set in a different location and featuring an entirely new set of characters with the exception of the artist turned German ... • Ernest Hemingway and the Politics of the Spanish Civil War
    • Abstract: During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Ernest Hemingway was unusually politically active and outspoken. As the war dragged on, the author embarked on many kinds of projects that he had never attempted before, and would never try again; in 1937 alone, he produced a film, wrote a play, gave a public speech, and organized a fundraising campaign during which he visited the White House to solicit support from the President and Mrs. Roosevelt. Although Hemingway was initially opposed to American involvement in the war, his work as a correspondent in Spain caused him to abandon his former isolationist stance and become an active proponent for military intervention in Spain. During the 1930s, Ernest ... Read More

  • Hemingway’s and Perkins’s Formation of Men Without Women
    • Abstract: “A book of stories, that is a good one, is just as much a unit as a novel.” Little attention has been paid to Ernest Hemingway’s collaboration with his editor Maxwell Perkins over the formation of Men Without Women, published in October 1927. Of the reviews by such writers as Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Parker, and Edmund Wilson, none refers to the volume as a shaped collection of stories (Stephens 52–66). Only F. Scott Fitzgerald responded to Men Without Women as such, “it’s a unit, as much as Conrad’s books of Contes were” (Bruccoli 151). In current scholarship, Joseph Flora has paid the most attention to how Hemingway’s arrangement of the stories influences the reading experience of the collection, yet ... Read More

  • Everybody Behaves Badly: The True Story Behind Hemingway’s The Sun Also
Rises by Lesley M. M. Blume (review)
    • Abstract: The title of Lesley Blume’s enticing study of the real life people in Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises is spoken in a brief exchange between the novel’s war-weary protagonists, Brett Ashley and Jake Barnes. When Brett tells Jake how sick she has become of her present paramour, Robert Cohn—“Nobody else would behave as badly”—Jake replies, “Everybody behaves badly, [. . .] Give them the proper chance” (185). “Everybody” comprises an entire generation Gertrude Stein labeled lost and damned, “un generation perdu [sic]” (131). Blume explains, “It wasn’t their fault that they were drunk, aimless, and destructive; they had been ruined by an ignoble war and the flawed institutions that used to give life meaning” ... Read More

  • Hemingway, Style, and the Art of Emotion by David Wyatt (review)
    • Abstract: This is the best book of criticism on Ernest Hemingway I have ever read. Wyatt began his work in response to a challenge from a fellow professor at the University of Maryland. As a summer reading project for 2012, why didn’t he read all of Hemingway? So Wyatt did, and by all he included not only the published work but judicious investigation of the drafts—the false starts and serial attempts at right endings—that are preserved in the vast Hemingway collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. He’d been teaching Hemingway for forty years, but had never so immersed himself before. The summer stretched into fall and beyond, and along the way Wyatt decided that the writer he’d ... Read More

  • The Critics and Hemingway, 1924–2014: Shaping an American Literary Icon
           by Laurence W. Mazzeno (review)
    • Abstract: After more than 90 years and countless numbers of books, essays, and articles on Ernest Hemingway, we ought to pity the poor student beginning serious inquiry into the master’s works for feeling an overwhelming sense of bewilderment. Where does one begin? Yes, the primary sources, of course—a growing list itself, both published and unpublished, daunting enough in size. But these works have also spawned a hoard of secondary sources, multiplying annually with seeming abandon and no sign of letting up. It’s not just the beginning student who needs help with this; we all do. Thus, the real necessity for a tertiary level of Hemingway book—that is, a book about books and articles (as well as the necessity here of ... Read More

  • Teaching Hemingway and War ed. by Alex Vernon (review)
    • Abstract: With the publication of an edited collection such as Teaching Hemingway and War, it is perhaps easy to forget that Hemingway did not technically serve in the military, at least not in the traditional sense, nor did he actually take part in most of the military actions about which he writes. Despite his publishers’ best marketing efforts to the contrary, Hemingway himself never wanted his war literature to be taken strictly as “personal history.” In a letter dated New Year’s Eve of 1930, Hemingway expressed to Maurice Coindreau, who had translated A Farewell to Arms into French, his frustration with publishers’ desires to pitch his imaginative war literature as an historical war document: I write ... • Hemingway’s Spain: Imagining the Spanish World ed. by Carl P. Eby,
           Mark Cirino (review)
    • Abstract: This anthology includes thirteen essays about Hemingway in Spain that began as papers presented at the Twelfth Biennial International Hemingway Conference in Ronda and Málaga, Spain, in 2006. The editors have taken special care to include essays about The Dangerous Summer and Hemingway’s short stories about the Spanish Civil War, as well as essays on Hemingway’s masterpieces about Spain. Some essays analyze Hemingway’s thorough knowledge of Spanish culture, while other essays interpret Hemingway’s Spanish quest as an introspective foray into his own conscience. Spain inspired Hemingway’s greatest literary triumphs while simultaneously exposing his personal and artistic vulnerabilities. María ... Read More

  • “A Moveable Feast” Exhibition by The Oak Park Art League
           (review)
    • Abstract: Tucked into an old carriage house near the corner of Oak Park and Chicago Avenues in Oak Park, IL are the headquarters for the Oak Park Art League. Walking distance from Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio, and Ernest Hemingway’s birthplace and boyhood homes, the Oak Park Art League’s Carriage House Gallery supports the regional influences and practices in art, architecture, and literature that honor Oak Park’s cultural heritage as well as continue to define its current cultural landscape. The Oak Park Art League encourages freedom of expression and the importance of the creative voice by offering art education to people of all ages and skill levels, programs and guest lectures, artist ... • Current Bibliography
    • Abstract: [The current bibliography aspires to include all serious contributions to Hemingway scholarship. Given the substantial quantity of significant critical work appearing on Hemingway’s life and writings annually, inconsequential items from the popular press have been omitted to facilitate the distinction of important developments and trends in the field. Annotations for articles appearing in The Hemingway Review have been omitted due to the immediate availability of abstracts introducing each issue.
