  • Parental role models' influence on entrepreneurial aspirations of Botswana
           female students
    • Abstract: Role models (RMs) are only determinant for the individual if they belong to the direct environment (Pablo-Lerchundi, Morales-Alonso, and González-Tirados 2015). Thus, parental role models (PRMs) form a key determinant of students' aspirations on career choice. The presence of PRMs had been associated with women's entrepreneurial attitudes (Entrialgo and Iglesias 2017); entrepreneurial self-identity (Obschonka, Silbereisen, Cantner, and Goethner 2015) higher level of family income (Wang and Wong, 2004; Stephan & Uhlaner 2010) and increased education and training (Sherer et al, 1989). Other studies found full time employed mothers, and their level of education to play a role in their children's career (Almquist and ... Read More

  • Analyzing the outcomes of government-led poverty reduction policy – the
case of 32 counties in southwestern china
    • Abstract: Although developing countries have experienced precipitous economic development in recent decades, many of them are experiencing widening regional economic inequalities (Fosu, 2017). Notably, the issue of regional economic disparities has received increased attention in the last few decades (Giannias et al., 2005; Shen, 2009; Ghosh, 2010; Giannias and Sfakianaki, 2013; Pinder, 2017). Among these developing economies, China is one of the most widely acknowledged countries with a significant "polarization" phenomenon in terms of economic disparities (Zhang and Kanbur, 2009). A large number of studies in the literature focus on China's regional economic disparities in large-scale levels, such as regional economic ... Read More

  • Impact of economic condition on crime rate in Nigeria
    • Abstract: Criminal activities in a society can act even more than the harshness of tax in a country especially developing nations like Nigeria. This is because it can discourage both domestic and foreign direct investments. It can reduce the firms and entire country's competitiveness, redistributes economic resources and finally create tension and uncertainties to the citizens. Hence, various governments at different levels are anxious to formulate policies to reduce crime rate. By so doing, billions of dollars are spent by Nigerian governments to equip the police authority for efficient prevention, detection and punishment of criminals. The impact of crime in an economy has received much attention in the economic literature ... • Accountants' engagement with social networking technologies in the UAE: A
           communicative ecology perspective
    • Abstract: Communication is an integral part of the work of accountants. However, according to Jack et al. (2013) this fundamental aspect of the accounting discipline has received relatively little attention in the literature. This paper aims at contributing to the accounting communication literature with specific reference to the potentials of new technologies in enhancing accountants' communication. The work of accountants has always been associated with a variety of technologies from the adoption of 'mechanical' accounting (Wootton & Kemmerer, 2007) to enterprise systems (Bhimani & Willcocks, 2014).In late 2004, SNT denoted the second generation of web-based services and applications accompanied by a raft of potentials for ... • Impact of international remittance inflows on poverty in Nigeria
    • Abstract: The 21st century has ushered in an era where increased attention has been focused on remittances and its effects on, especially, the economies of emerging and developing countries. Despite the positive trend of remittance inflows in Nigeria [US$20.77 billion (World Bank, 2016)], this has not transcended to the expected benefit on household poverty as poverty incidence has remained high. Recent studies show that the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty increases by six people every minute (Brookings Institute, 2018). The report notes that "Nigeria has already overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extremely poor people in 2018" (ibid.).ii Furthermore the report suggests that as at the end ... • CEO compensation and corporate governance: Evidence from India
    • Abstract: The subject of corporate governance can be addressed either in a principled-based approach or in a rule-based approach. In simple terms, it is an adoption of voluntary and legally mandated codes by the companies (Sridhar 2017). The purpose of corporate governance is to fix accountability of the board of directors and one level below the board. Good corporate governance practices enable protection of not only the shareholder's interest but also the broader universe of stakeholder's interest also. Therefore, corporate governance calls for effectively running the businesses and ensuring financial viability to all business entities associated with the company. In India management is led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ... • Abstract: Multinational enterprises consider a number of factors before making decisions on whether or not to invest in Africa, and specifically in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)1. Some of the factors include infrastructure quality, market size, regulations, institutional quality and the return on investment (Asiedu, 2004; Mbakile-Moloi, 2006). More often than not, taxation (including tax rates and tax policy) is not at the fore of these considerations even though it is a very definite and important factor. According to Hansson and Olofsdotter (2010), many regional economic communities in the world and in Africa (including the SADC and the East African Community) are specifically pursuing enhanced tax ... • Determinants of banks fragility in the MENA region using a dynamic model
    • Abstract: Sound and healthy banking system plays an important role in proper functioning of the economy (Ivicic et al., 2008). Banks are highly regulated since any shock that affects their assets will have an impact on the whole economy (Bernanke & Gertler, 1995). Inherently by design, banks are highly leveraged firms and their management depends mainly on managing risk. In literature, the term "bank insolvency" became common in 1970's (Ivicic et al., 2008). A bank is said to be insolvent if it fails to fulfill various governing procedures to sustain its solvency (Sinkey, 1979). Balance sheet insolvency, cash flow insolvency, and a technical insolvency are the most common banking insolvencies. These insolvencies become the ... Read More

  • Macroeconomic trends and factors of production affecting potato producer
           prices in developing countries
    • Abstract: Affordable potato price potentially provides major aid for the poor, whereas business incentives require that producers receive a price that covers their opportunity cost of choosing potato production. Combining these two opposing needs, to have them adequately meet, promises greater importance for the potato. Its consumption share and production increase would naturally follow. Inversely, should potato price be too high for general consumption, or too low for producer incentives, the progress can be stalled. Consequently, in attempts to increase the importance of the potato, it is central to understand factors that affect its price.Earlier research on potato pricing has uncovered relatively small nuances, usually ... • Short and long-term impact of trade openness on financial development in
           Sub-Saharan Africa
    • Abstract: We examine the impact of trade openness on financial development in sub-Saharan African countries. Several studies have identified a link between finance and openness (see, for example: Newbery and Stiglitz, 1984; Braun and Raddatz, 2005; Do and Levchenko, 2007; Baltagi, Demetriades and Law, 2009; Kim, Lin and Suen, 2010; Iyke, Antwi-Asare, Gockel and Abbey, 2016). For example, Rajan and Zingales (2003) argue that trade and capital account openness may promote financial development by enhancing foreign direct and portfolio investments. The lack of finance has been the major hindrance to the growth of firms. Hence, a well-developed financial system ensures that funds are available for all firms to access, and, as a ... Read More

  • Protection of small investors and firm value: Evidence from the split
           share structure reform in China
    • Abstract: Classical law and finance theories state that better investor protection is associated with better development of financial markets (La Porta, Lopez-de-Silanes, Shleifer & Vishny, 1997, 1998, 2000b). Shleifer and Vishny (1997) recognize the possible expropriation of minority shareholders by entrenched controlling shareholders. La Porta, Lopez-de-Silanes, Shleifer and Vishny (2002) provide evidence that in countries with better protection of minority shareholders, firm values are higher. With better protection, outside investors are willing to pay more for financial assets, such as equity or debt, as more of firm's profits can be returned to investors with less expropriation by the controlling shareholder in the ... • Remittances, income inequality and investment in Bangladesh
    • Abstract: Remittances are the money and goods that are transferred to families back home by migrant workers who are employed outside of their origin communities. While about 250 million people, or 3.4% of the world population, live in the countries where they were not born (World Bank, 2017), migration and remittances have attracted increasing attention globally over the past decades. Remittances are considered as more stable external income for developing countries rather than other private flows and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) (Bagasao et al., 2004) and have been observed to be increased significantly during the time of economic depression and financial crisis (Bui et al., 2015). In 2018, Bangladesh received 15.5 ... Read More

  • Circular economy: Bridging the gap in sustainable manufacturing
    • Abstract: For a very long time, businesses around the globe have based their business models on the concept of a linear model of production and consumption. A linear business model typically includes readily available exploitation resources and cost-efficient to earn profits, later to be discarded as waste after use (Fujimoto, 2003). However, as resource extraction has grown exponentially over the past decades, resources have become scarcer. As a result, prices have become extremely volatile, and risks surrounding supply chain dependency have increased. This change has compelled businesses to explore other sustainable business models. One such model that considers business efficiency, as well as environmental sustainability ... Read More

  • Capital flight-growth nexus in Sub-Saharan Africa: The role of
           macroeconomic uncertainty
    • Abstract: The view that capital is indispensible for the actualization of sustainable growth and development in any economy has been well documented in the literature (see for a review, Cinyabuguma and Putterman, 2010). In a study by the Tax Justice Network (see Henry, 2012), it is observed that unrecorded capital outflow representing 39.5 per cent of GDP as of 2010 is relatively higher for Africa when compared to the East and Southern Asia with about 12 per cent. Consequently, the economic costs of capital have been found to be relatively higher for Africa than other regions (see UNDP, 2013). Nonetheless, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA thereafter), there have been impressive prospects towards the actualization of meaningful ... Read More

  • Mitigating educated youth unemployment in Bangladesh
    • Abstract: As human resource, the unemployed or underemployed educated population is prevented from contributing to economic development, and it is a drag on the economy. One main purpose of education is therefore to duly train and then utilize the available human resources. From human capital approach to education, delinking education from employment causes disequilibrium in the supply of and demand for educated manpower in the labor market and when this gap persists or widens, this may lead to many negative consequences (Islam, 2008). Socio-economic development cannot be attained until and unless the goal of an optimum educational and manpower planning is achieved (Ahmed, Ali and Ahmed, 1978), which requires that the ... Read More

  • Financing structure of microfinance institutions: Evidence from Bangladesh
    • Abstract: Recently, the landscape of microfinance has changed by the competitive business environment, as well as innovations and diversifications of financial services (Afonso et al., 2017). Similarly, a significant change has also observed in the funding structure of the microfinance industry (Dorfleitner et al., 2017, El-Zoghbi et al., 2011).1 Once a donor-dominated initiative, the global microfinance industry has now seen numerous sources of funds (Ghosh and Van Tassel, 2011), including the microfinance sector in Bangladesh (MRA, 2015). Still, microfinance institutions (MFIs) in most developing countries face considerable challenges (Ambarkhane et al., 2019) and competition to fund their microfinance activities as they ... Read More

  • FDI and domestic investment in Africa: Evidence on the role of local
           conditions
    • Abstract: FDI can generate positive externalities through providing financing, complementing domestic investment and enhancing competitiveness (Adams, 2009; Kobrin, 2005). The role of FDI as a source of capital is particularly important for Africa owing to the prevailing huge financing gap and widening current account and fiscal deficits. This has been exacerbated by the low private domestic savings and the binding budget constraint facing most African economies. Scholars such as Todaro and Smith (2003) argue that the inflow of FDI could fill the gap between the desired investment and domestically mobilised savings. It has also been argued that since the majority of African countries do not have ready access to international ... Read More

  • Socioeconomic factors: Effect on the commercialization of female farmers
           participating in a development program
    • Abstract: According to Eib and Siegert (2019), entrepreneurship has been suggested as an alternative career model for women to gain economic empowerment while maintaining caring obligations. Ceresia and Mendola (2019) stated that entrepreneurship is considered one of the most powerful drivers of national economies around the world. There is no confirmed definition to the term agricultural commercialization, accordingly, Nwafor, (2015) opined that the lack of clarity of this concept has given rise to varying misconceptions in literature. These definitions all differ in focus and according to what the measurement of commercialization is. Agwu, Anyanwu, and Mendie (2013) inserted that agricultural commercialization can thus be ... • What drives investment decisions of households' Evidence from Suriname
    • Abstract: Households are confronted daily with financial decisions (Jinhee, Gutter, & Spangler, 2017). Hence, this study investigates what factors are related to households' financial decision-making. We survey households in Suriname to this end and investigate which factors are associated with their decisions to invest in financial products. Tufano (2009) indicates that the financial services and products used by households form an essential part of the financial sector. Guiso and Sodini (2013) point out that at the end of 2010, households in the U.S. for example, held twice as many assets and at least as much debt as corporations. Hence, studies regarding household finances deserve attention as households are a key ... Read More

  • Towards food security: Adoption benefits of climate-smart conservation
           agriculture in South-West Nigeria
    • Abstract: The future of sustainable agriculture relies primarily on conservation agricultural (CA) farming system with varying potential benefits and easy adaptability across different and heterogeneous socio-economic and agro-ecological regions. According to Joshi (2011), the benefits range from the nano-level (improving soil properties) to micro-level (saving inputs, reducing cost of production, increasing farm income), and macro-level by reducing poverty, improving food security, alleviating global warming. Consequent on the huge expected benefits from CA farming systems, its adoption needs to be aggressively promoted. The aggressiveness of CA promotion is needed for its diffusion and information dissemination among ... Read More

  • Monetary policy transmission in Nigeria: Does the credit channel work'
    • Abstract: Monetary policy is transmitted to the real economy through a number of channels. Theoretically, the recognized channels are the interest rate, credit/bank lending, and the exchange rate (Gunji and Yuan, 2010; Bernanke and Blinder, 1992; Bernanke and Gertler, 1995; Suzuki, 2004; Zhaohui, 2006). The credit channel of monetary policy transmission operates through changes in lending. Debate on the presence of the credit channel in the monetary policy transmission (MPT) process has occupied the forefront of current monetary policy discourse. Meanwhile, many macroeconomic models tend to ignore this channel of transmission due to empirically-backed claims of insignificance (Valerie, 1993). Over the years, a number of ... Read More

    • Abstract: Globalization, the contemporary economic and global environment, has resulted in significant changes to individual nations in terms of the developmental strategies undertaken by national governments for economic progress for innovation (Barman and Singh 2009). Privatization, public-private partnerships (PPPs), etc. are considered as such strategic tools for innovation and performance that are believed to result in significant changes to nations' economic development. However, believing that the colonial regime of economic management with laissez-faire capitalism benefited only the colonizing country by generating exportable surpluses of primary commodities while ensuring the colonies remained accessible markets for ... • Can renewable energy deliver African quests for sustainable
           development'
    • Abstract: The renewed attention of empirical debates on sustainable development in recent times can be justified mainly on three strands of arguments. The first stems from the threat posed by global climate instability and its foreseeable devastating impacts which have long been advocated as requiring action from both developed and developing countries (Mende and Odeku 2009; IPCC 2014) and one of such actions is the signing and subsequent ratification of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change ("UNFCCC") since 1992. This becomes inevitable considering the facts that, the world's total anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) have approximately doubled since the early 1970s, and expected to rise by over 70% ... • Does financial inclusion affect financial stability: Evidence from BRICS
           nations'
    • Abstract: Since, the last three decades, the financial systems in many countries have witnessed substantial reforms through the adoption of financial liberalization, financial development, financial inclusion and very recently financial innovations (Van der Zwan, 2014). All these financial policies have helped to raise the banking efficiency, profitability and have also helped to extend the outreach of financial products/services to the unbanked masses. Furthermore, these financial policies have created positive effects on the economic growth through appropriate investment of funds, proper risk management, and efficient allocation of resources (Schumpeter, 1911; Goldsmith, 1969; King and Levine,1993). Except economic growth ... Read More

  • Institutional quality, macroeconomic factors and stock market volatility:

    • Abstract: This paper focuses on the volatility of stock market returns in developed and emerging markets. In particular, it examines the effect of institutional quality with key country-level governance indicators and a comprehensive set of macroeconomic factors on stock market volatility in seventeen countries (i.e. ten developed and seven emerging economies) during the period 2001 to 2012 (i.e. covering both pre and post-Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Financial markets around the world severely suffer during the GFC. Although the GFC is over in late 2010, the effects of GFC remain visible for a long time. During this period, the European debt crisis contributes to substantial structural and economic changes in several ... Read More
