  • High-Frequency Return-Implied Volatility Relationship: Empirical Evidence
           from Nifty and India VIX
    • Abstract: There exists enough empirical support for a negative and asymmetric return-volatility relationship. The asymmetric relationship suggests that negative returns are related to larger volatility than positive return. Previous studies use different measures of volatility and report the negative and asymmetric return-volatility. Engle and Ng (1993), Glosten, Jagannathan, and Runkle, (1993) present evidence of negative and asymmetric relationship using autoregressive conditional volatility models. Fleming, Ostdiek, and Whaley (1995), Whaley (2000) and Giot (2005) report negative and asymmetric relationship employing VXO1. Literature supports the use of option-implied volatility over the realized volatility. Bollerslev ... Read More

  • Foreign Capital Inflows, Financial Development and Growth In Nigeria: A
           Structural VAR Approach
    • Abstract: Foreign capital inflows are crucial to developing countries because they provide the capital needed for investment and growth (Siddiqui, 2014). They also help in broadening and deepening the financial markets, increasing liquidity, and facilitating the transfer of technology and management expertise. Furthermore, foreign capital inflows promote the creation of new job opportunities, thereby boosting economic growth (Ajayi, 2006). As a result, developing countries are increasingly seeing foreign capital inflows as a vital source of capital that could be channeled to investment and enhance the performance of their economy (Siddiqui, 2014). Foreign capital inflows include foreign direct investments (FDI) inflows ... Read More

  • Climate Change Adaptation Strategies and Income Inequality Among Cocoa
Farmers in The Ashanti Region of Ghana
    • Abstract: The role of agriculture as a primary supplier of food and raw materials for industrial development in Africa is now seriously undermined by climate change. In absence of adequate mitigation efforts, development of appropriate adaptation and coping strategies is critical for mitigating climate change's impacts. In addition, the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) noted that there is the need to reduce the levels of poverty and inequality, while showing some commitments to sustainable use of natural resources and formulation of climate-related adaptation policies (IPCC, 2014). Some projections have also shown that climate change is going to be a significant contributor to economic stagnations in ... Read More

  • Network Externalities and Sanitation
    • Abstract: Despite being a rapidly growing emerging economy and witnessing gradual improvements in human development indices, India still faces a huge challenge of poor sanitation. Nearly half the population of India defecate in the open; that is 90% of all those who defecate in the open in South Asia are from India.1 Not surprisingly, the primary cause for open defecation is the lack of access to toilets. The problem is particularly severe in rural India where only 45% of the households have a sanitary toilet.2However, lack of toilets is not the only impediment to sanitation. To make an area Open Defecation Free (ODF), one must address the issue of the unavailability of sanitary toilets as well as the cultural sentiments ... Read More

  • Asset Ownership and Income as Drivers of Household Poverty In South Africa
    • Abstract: The number of people living in extreme poverty in the world has dropped by more than half – from 1.9 billion in 1990, to 836 million in 2015. However, a sizeable number of people are still struggling to meet the most basic human needs; mostly living on less than $1.25 a day (SDGFund, 2015). In South Africa, the proportion of the population living in poverty declined from 66,6% (31,6 million persons) in 2006 to 53,2% (27,3 million) in 2011, but increased to 55,5% (30,4 million) in 2015. The number of persons living in extreme poverty (i.e. persons living below the 2015 Food Poverty Line of R441 per person per month) in South Africa increased by 2,7 million, from 11 million in 2011 to 13,8 million in 2015 (Stats SA ... • A Dynamic Analysis of Maternal Fertility Choices and Child Health in South
           Africa
    • Abstract: This study is driven by the compelling evidence in the literature on the key role of maternal fertility choices in determining child health (Black et al., 2005; Maitra and Pal, 2008; Mogstad and Wiswall, 2016). Based on the intuition that household resources are constrained by household size, children in larger households (in comparison with smaller households) are often deprived of resources, time and attention (Glick et al., 2007); leading to poor health outcomes. Specifically, child nutritional health which is typically assessed by anthropometric measures have been found to be inversely linked to maternal fertility (Kabubo-Mariara, 2014; Baye and Sitan, 2016). Poor nutritional health could result in malnutrition ... Read More

  • Financial Development and Health Outcomes in Sub-Saharan African Countries
    • Abstract: Economic theory has divergent predictions on the effect of financial development on human welfare in terms of poverty reduction, human capital accumulation and vulnerability to shocks (Beck, Dermiguc-Kunt & Levine 2004, 2008). Financial development promotes human capital investment in the same manner it fosters physical capital accumulation (De Gregorio 1995; Jacoby & Skoufias 1997; Beck, Dermiguc-Kunt & Levine 2004, Hakeem & Oluitan 2012; Classens & Feijin 2006a). The financial sector by easing access to credit, facilitating savings, risk management, lowering transaction costs and sharing of information ensures that economic agents can invest in human capital (Giovannini, Iacopetta, & Minneti 2013). Human capital ... Read More

  • The Efficient Corruption Hypothesis and the Dynamics Between Economic
           Freedom, Corruption, and National Income
    • Abstract: Economists and political scientists seem endlessly fascinated by the relationship between corruption and economic performance (Shleifer and Vishny, 1993; Mauro, 1995; Campos, 1999; Bologna, 2016). The earliest thinking was that a well-functioning economy relied on proper institutions.1 Corrupt bureaucrats personified inefficient institutions. The bribes they demanded were seen as an unnecessary tax on businesses, which would invariably cause distortions, deadweight loss, inefficiency, and poverty. That thinking was turned on its head in the 1960s, primarily by Leff (1964) and Huntington (1968), who argued that corruption – in some circumstances – provided a much-needed safety valve from stifling bureaucracy. In such ... Read More

  • The Quality of Institutions and the Relationship Between International
           Trade and Inequality
    • Abstract: The relationship between international trade and inequality is particularly important in developing countries. Distinctive institutional characteristics of these countries, as the concentration of de facto power through the concentration of economic resources (ACEMOGLU and ROBINSON, 2006) and the lack of access to justice for disadvantaged individuals (SANDEFUR, 2008), may intensify the vulnerability of people at the bottom of the income distribution and their access to the gains of international trade. These characteristics translate informal and formal norms, indicating institutional aspects that mediate the relationship between international trade and inequality. Nevertheless, institutional differences across ... Read More

  • Trade, Productivity and Employment Nexus: An Examination in Post-Reforms
           India
    • Abstract: A steady decline in the share of agriculture in India's GDP without a compensating growth of industry, and the consequent slow transfer of labor from agriculture to non-farm activities (much of the growth in non-farm employment has been of 'informal' kind) mean a slow poverty reduction despite high growth in the reform era. For sustained growth, India cannot avoid a stage of rapid industrialization. In the transition period, India must rely heavily on the unskilled-labor-intensive manufacturing. Economic Survey, 2016-17 underlines the employment potential of low-skilled labor-using sectors. The challenge for India is to exploit trade opportunities left behind by China, especially in textile and leather exports ... Read More

  • Determinants of Inflation in Kuwait1
    • Abstract: Inflation is a sustained rise in the general prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time. It results in paying more money for the same goods or services. Despite the ability to determine whether an economy is experiencing inflation, there is no consensus, until now, on what causes it. In the literature, Demand- Pull Inflation theory advanced by the Keynesian school attributes inflation to the increase in the demand for goods and services. According to the theory, few goods and services (limited supply) are met by high demand. Demand is growing faster than supply. This results in increase in prices. Another theory advanced in the literature, Cost Push Inflation, contends that inflation occurs as ... Read More

  • Supply-Side Analysis of the Market for Tomato in Bauchi State, Nigeria
    • Abstract: In 2013, Nigeria was ranked the second and 13th largest producer of tomatoes in Africa and globally, respectively. Its total annual production is estimated at 1 million hectares of land producing about 1.7 million tonnes per year with an average of 20-30 tons per hectare (Youth Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture-YISA, 2013). Tomato is cultivated almost everywhere in Nigeria (Adenegan & Adeoye, 2011). Main while, some states are regarded as the leaders in tomato production. In descending order of highest production of tomatoes, these states include: Kano; Taraba; Gombe; Bauchi; Kaduna; Sokoto; Zamfara; Katsina; and Jigawa (Ugonna, Jolaoso & Onwualu, 2015). All these states produce about 80% of all tomatoes in ... Read More
