  • From the editor
    • Abstract: When reading these essays for the seventh and final time, it occurs to me that what really separates them from those essays that were not selected for publication is that they are less formulaic, less swollen with the type of quotation from Nabokov that authorizes one’s own reading while simultaneously making Nabokov sound far more platitudinous than he really is. After all, Nabokov could get away with certain archness of tone that most of us have not earned. A final look also reveals that, although it was not the Advisory Board’s goal, this volume offers essays that could easily be paired: figured bodies standing for Nabokov’s blissful real readers (Kitzinger) pair up with figured spaces standing ... • “A Variety of Forms”: Reading Bodies in Nabokov
    • Abstract: What does Nabokov make of his characters?1 Recent theoretical discussions of literary character have drawn attention to the productive tension between “character” and “person”: the ways in which our sense of characters as narrative building blocks must coexist with a sense of the aspects of personhood, and the individual fictional person, each character evokes (see among others Fowler, Frow, Lynch, Phelan, and Woloch). However, the two poles posited in this formula—character as an element of narrative “structure” and character as a claim to individual “reference” (Woloch 17)—allow for varied combinations. In his New York Edition prefaces, for example, Henry James consistently paints characters as ... Read More

  • Taking Room and Giving Room: Displacement, Generous Spaces, and
Impossibility of Existence in Nabokov’s “Cloud, Castle, Lake”
    • Abstract: Originally written in Russian and published as “Oblako, ozero, bashnya” in 1937, “Cloud, Castle, Lake” was considered by Nabokov as one of his favourite stories (Boyd 1990, 439). Despite the simplicity of its plot, it is also one of his most intriguing and intricate short fictions. Vasiliy Ivanovich, a Russian émigré living in Berlin during the nineteen-thirties, wins at a charity ball a ticket for a “pleasure trip” organized by the German authorities. Harassed and humiliated by his German fellow travellers throughout the journey, Vasiliy is brutally beaten by them and forced to return to Berlin when he announces his decision to stay for good at an inn offering the view of the cloud, the lake, and the castle ... • Lolita reading Lolita: Rhetoric of Reader Participation
    • Abstract: The author makes his readers, just as he makes his characters. This paper is about Lolita; it examines how the book is supposed to be read by Nabokov’s “good reader.” Even though this question is not completely new in Nabokoviana (cf. Cooper), I will offer a new approach to tackling it. I will explore what the given instructions1 are and how one can resist or follow them while rereading the novel as a piece of instructive metafiction. A network of details2 illuminates Lolita as always shown in relationship with someone else (Charlotte, Humbert, Mona, Quilty, and Dick) and not as an independent character. For that reason, the development of the Humbert-Lolita relationship is of particular interest because ... Read More

  • Can You Hear Me Now?: Monologue, Dialogue, and the Other Voices in
           Lolita’s Sexual History
    • Abstract: “A little after five a reverberating monologue began to arrive, in several installments, from some courtyard or parking place. It was not really a monologue, since the speaker stopped every few seconds to listen (presumably) to another fellow, but that other voice did not reach me, and so no real meaning could be derived from the part heard.” This haunting little comment from Lolita, a novel full of haunting moments moving ghostlike through the rooms of Humbert’s house of dark humor, will serve as the motto for my re-visitation here of a critical ghost from my own past. Humbert makes this pre-dawn comment in the Enchanted Hunters hotel, where he has drugged Lolita in hopes of making her insensible to his ... Read More

  • On a Translation Entitled Lolita
    • Abstract: My title, in keeping with its topic, is a by-product. It spins off Nabokov’s afterword “On a Book Entitled Lolita,” already riffed once by the only translator Nabokov ever trusted, his son Dmitri, in a piece called “On a Book Entitled The Enchanter.” In this piece Nabokov the Second dilates on the job of translating his father’s Russian-written Enchanter into English. Not to complicate matters, the said Enchanter happens to be one of the last pieces of fiction Nabokov the First wrote in Russian, and is the short-story prototype of the tale he resuscitated ten years later, this time in English, and which would become Lolita. • Finding the Beauty in the “butcher’s carcasses”: Vladimir
           Nabokov’s Sense of Memory
    • Abstract: “Everything in the world is beautiful, but man only recognizes beauty if he sees it either seldom or from afar. Listen, today we are gods! Our blue shadows are enormous! We move in a gigantic, joyful world!” My paper aims at investigating the man-existence-writing relationship, the way a man perceives his life and the way he inscribes these reflections in the written text. I focus on Vladimir Nabokov: this author is considered one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers because he analyzes the crisis of the man who has lost his own space in the world, and he emphasizes the new perception of reality, not a single, true, and objective one but a faceted, prismatic, and subjective one. Nabokov’s ... Read More

  • Vladimir Nabokov’s Translations
    • Abstract: Translation, in Nabokov’s work is more than the mere transposition of a literary text from one language into another—it is a creative principle. In this symposium we propose to investigate what we see as Nabokov’s translational poetics—a comprehensive effort to relate to foreignness and the “Other” that is, as such, also a powerful contribution to literary modernism, its media, and its critique. I conceive of translation both narrowly and broadly. Narrowly, as the transposition of a text from one language into another. And broadly, as an effort to negotiate the differences between cultures in linguistic—but not purely linguistic—terms. As for the more narrow view of translation, Nabokov has a long record as ... • Mimicry in Lolita
    • Abstract: In his study of butterflies Vladimir Nabokov was fascinated by mimicry, the techniques of camouflage and defense that the prey uses to protect itself from the predator. Writing to a publisher on Nabokov’s behalf in 1952, his wife Véra confirmed his longstanding interest in this subject: “the question of mimicry is one that has passionately interested him all his life, and one of his pet projects has always been the compilation of a work that would comprise all the known examples of mimicry in the animal kingdom” (Johnson 324). In Lolita (1955), Nabokov creates a world where the characters employ human variants of insect strategies. They adopt masks and mirrors, personae and pretense, imitation and illusion ... Read More

  • Dying is Fun. Writing is Hard
    • Abstract: At a party in the fall of 1999, a new student at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop approached the program’s longtime director, Frank Conroy. “Frank,” he said, “I was wondering if you could tell me how to write a novel?” The question, delivered straight-faced, was nonetheless loaded, as was Conroy. Without pausing to think about it, Conroy responded: “Set it up. Run it. Shut it down.” It’s a wry formulation, but it also happens to be the most precise encapsulation of Conroy’s philosophy of writing I’ve come across (in workshop, he was fond of intoning, “Meaning, sense, and clarity,” the standards required of every good sentence, but that was less a philosophy than a verbal rosary). The aggressive ... Read More

  • Letters to Véra ed. by Vladimir Nabokov (review)
    • Abstract: There is an early Virginia Woolf story, “Lappin and Lapinova,” written sometime before 1918, in which a rather stiff, newly married couple make a small, intimate fantasy world between them out of a pair of pet names. His nose twitches a little when he eats so he is a rabbit, or rather King Lappin, and she is therefore Queen Lapinova, and together they reign over a private, desolate world of streams and mists. Until, that is, he gets a bit bored of it, and a few years later tells her that Lapinova has been caught in a trap, before sitting down to read the paper. Nabokov was equally merciless about pet names in Laughter in the Dark (1938). To Albinus, his 17-year-old mistress Margot is his “pet,” ... Read More
