  • Huck (Hound) and Jim (Crow): Syndicated Television Cartoons and Southern
           Segregation
    • Abstract: In 1953, a Democratic Alabama state legislator named Sam Englehardt, Jr., was worried for the future of segregation. The US Supreme Court had just convened to hear arguments in Brown v. Board of Education, and the lawyers advocating for the plaintiffs were proposing that “separate but equal”—the legal principle that served as the foundation of Jim Crow—had no constitutionality in public schools. In addition, the opening remarks in the land’s highest court came just one month after the Republican Party had won national contests in the executive and legislative branches of government, victories achieved when the South was solidly a Democratic region. The country had even elected its first Republican president in two ... Read More

  • Bette Davis and the Cold War Career Women in Storm Center (1956)
    • Abstract: Librarians in film and television often occupy the position of, at the very least, mildly antisocial hideaway. In recent popular culture, the profession appears in the form of the bookish scholarly hero (as in the character of Giles from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (1992 film and 1997–2003 television series) or the character of Flynn Carsen from The Librarian (2004–2008 television films and 2014–2018 television series). Beyond these male figures, the librarian can also signify social isolation and loneliness when associated with women. In the film It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), the otherwise buoyant and graceful Mary (Donna Reed) transforms into a dowdy librarian in the dismal alternative reality created by an angel ... Read More

  • Patriotism as Institutional Racism: The Purge and the Fugitive Slave Act
    • Abstract: The sesquicentennial of the American Civil War (2011–2015) produced a surge of feature films about the conflict and its participants. Beginning with the early entry The Conspirator (2010) and highlighted by Lincoln (2012), Civil War films appeared regularly through at least the 2017 picture The Beguiled. Yet filmmakers of the sesquicentennial most directly confronted slavery and its legacy in an arresting cycle of films set outside the period of the Civil War. Such pictures spanned multiple genres, and included The Help (2011), Django Unchained (2012), The Butler (2013), and 12 Years a Slave (2013). An unlikely companion to these films is James DeMonaco’s The Purge (2013), which casts the essential attitudes ... Read More

  • The Evolution of Nuclear Fear in Post-Occupation Japanese Film
    • Abstract: In the wake of the first use of atomic weapons against the Japanese people, the people of the United States were generally pensive about the decision that had just been made on their behalf. Historian Paul Boyer has stated that, “for a fleeting moment after Hiroshima, American culture had been profoundly affected by atomic fear, by a dizzying plethora of atomic panaceas and proposals, and by endless speculation on the social and ethical implications of the new reality.”1 Faced with the almost instant death of two hundred thousand Japanese people, most of them civilians, Americans were forced to examine the morality of their leaders’ choice to engage weapons of such indiscriminate power. The appearance of American ... Read More

  • The Face of Germany, 1918–1945: Ufa Personnel, Censorship, and
           Propaganda
    • Abstract: Toward the end of World War I (WWI), with the Allied powers’ anti-German propaganda at its zenith, Generalquartiermeister Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff considered the German propaganda efforts to be too fragmented to be effective and felt the need to create a film production company that would be controlled directly by the German armed forces.1 Thus, at the end of 1916, Bild-und Filmamt (Bufa) was created as an umbrella organization for all government and military film, as well as press agencies, to promote the German war effort.2 Bufa mainly produced short educational, propaganda, and entertainment films for both the front line and the reserve forces.3 Still, General Ludendorff, wanting to move beyond the ... • Emile Durkheim Rides Again: The Death of the Western Hero and the Rise of
           the Moral Individualist
    • Abstract: This article examines the function, transition, and ultimate removal of the hero from the Western film genre in the late 1960s. Most examinations of the genre, especially of its mid-twentieth-century heyday, have assumed that the Western requires a “hero.” Even “antihero” Westerns of the late 1960s depend on this assumption, for although the hero is often absent from antihero narratives, the hero and antihero exist on the same spectrum. The result has been a remarkably binary approach to the genre, with heroic figures played by the likes of Errol Flynn, Randolph Scott, Alan Ladd, and John Wayne used as lenses for understanding large-scale cultural movements.1 This article argues instead that revisionist Westerns ...            (review)
    • Abstract: Because Katherine Groo argues that film historiography has ultimately been conservative, this book presents a brave intervention, offering both a nuanced critique of disciplinary traditions and a model for radical approaches to archival film. From its demanding introduction through to its playful end, it is a series of workouts, each rewarding the reader, like a difficult climb which reveals at every turn a view of a vast open valley. What I mean is this: each step requires extraordinary attention to material and discursive detail, to surface and texture, but doing this work expands your horizons. Aside from these hard-earned vistas, this book also made my life better by throwing a line over the chasm between the ... Read More

  • Runaway Hollywood: Internationalizing Postwar Production and Location
           Shooting by Daniel Steinhart (review)
    • Abstract: In Runaway Hollywood: Internationalizing Postwar Production and Location Shooting, Daniel Steinhart historicizes Hollywood’s current globalized filmmaking practices by offering a detailed historical study of post–World War II Hollywood’s overseas production. Focusing on the late 1940s to early 1960s, Steinhart combines archival research with formal visual analysis to argue that multiple and multifaceted issues—political, economic, geographical, logistical, stylistic, technical, and interpersonal—shaped postwar overseas (that is, “runaway”) production. Any readers who assume that exploitative economic aims alone can account for Hollywood’s shift into overseas production will come away from Steinhart’s study ... Read More

  • The Shining by K.J. Donnelly (review)
    • Abstract: Stanley Kubrick is one of the most revered and enigmatic filmmakers in American cinematic history. His oeuvre as a writer-producer-director consists of no less than ten heralded masterpieces and many of his films consistently rank as among the highest in industry- and critic-based polls. Current filmmakers continue to cite his work as a paramount influence on their own artistic endeavors. No less celebrated a filmmaker than Martin Scorsese has noted that one Kubrick film was equal to the entire output of almost any other filmmaker. Within Kubrick’s body of work, The Shining (1980) is perhaps his most enigmatic but also most popular film; it is by far the most scrutinized and theorized of his films, even being the ... Read More

  • The Lost World of DeMille by John Kobal (review)
    • Abstract: Cinematic reputations rise and fall. None more so than Cecil B. DeMille who is the only film director to dominate Hollywood from the 1910s, through the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and well into the 1950s. DeMille is simply without peer throughout the studio era. His only possible directorial rival was John Ford, who had been in Hollywood since 1913 as an actor, but even he did begin his directorial career until 1917. Ford did not have a major directorial success until 1924 with The Iron Horse, at which stage DeMille had been a key director for close to a decade, with his first film The Squaw Man co-directed by Oscar Apfel in 1914. Aside from being a director, he had helped found Paramount Studios. In one form or another ... Read More

  • Jolted Images (Unbound Analytic) by Pavle Levi (review)
    • Abstract: The cover of Pavle Levi’s Jolted Images (Unbound Analytic) displays a panel from the comic “Survival” (Spunk no. 1, 1979). A man, his chest exposed to reveal an electrical socket imbedded in his left breast, lifts a cord that is dangling in front of him. He plugs the cord into his chest socket, and his eyes illuminate. His sense of sight becomes both a receiver and a projector of light. For Levi, the panel is a representation of the “syntotics of the future” (16)—syntotics being a therapeutic procedure utilizing colored lights to alleviate a variety of mental and physical ailments (13). Levi’s personal experience with syntotics as a child was, in a sense, his initiation into the space of cinematic exhibition. The ... Read More

  • Free and Easy' A Defining History of the American Film Musical Genre
           by Sean Griffin (review)
    • Abstract: With his 2018 book Free and Easy' A Defining History of the American Film Musical Genre, Sean Griffin joins a long list of authors who have tackled the genre, from Rick Altman, whose 1987 text The American Film Musical is foundational, to Jeanine Basinger, whose The Movie Musical was published in November 2019. What separates Griffin’s book from the others is his central question: What constitutes a film musical' For decades people have routinely declared the musical dead and, as he discusses in his final chapter, it is especially relevant question in an era when we could debate whether online video productions and social media posts of amateur musical performances qualify.Griffin, who teaches a musical film genre ... • The Ambivalent Legacy of Elia Kazan: The Politics of the Post-HUAC Films
           by Ron Briley (review)
    • Abstract: “Ambivalent” is a recurring adjective in this absorbing and provocative study of the director’s last twelve films, each given its own chapter except for the last two which are grouped together: Viva Zapata! (1952), Man on a Tightrope (1953), On the Waterfront (1954), East of Eden (1955), Baby Doll (1956), A Face in the Crowd (1957), Wild River (1960), Splendor in the Grass (1961), America America (1963), The Arrangement (1969), The Visitors (1971), and The Last Tycoon (1976). It would be a mistake to bypass the Introduction, paginated in Roman numerals. It is really a chapter unto itself summarizing Kazan’s work and politics. If Kazan emerged as a conflicted man in his autobiography, A Life (1988), he now appears ... Read More

  • Futurist Cinema: Studies on Italian Avant-garde Film ed. by Rossella
           Catanese (review)
    • Abstract: In his monumental Futurism and Futurisms, Pontus Hultén writes that “Futurist cinema does not exist and has never existed.” (448) This is a common position, based on such facts as the absence of references to film in the avant-garde movement’s inaugural text, Marinetti’s 1909 manifesto, the diminutive number of films produced under the movement’s auspices, and the failure of most of those films to live up to the aesthetic and ideational principles set forth in the manifesto and other programmatic writings of the Futurists. On the other hand, Marinetti eventually embraced film in 1916, scripting Vita futurista (Arnaldo Gina) and publishing “Manifesto of Futurist Cinema.” Futurist Cinema, a highly useful and readable ... • Animation ed. by Scott Curtis (review)
    • Abstract: Animation, edited by Scott Curtis, is a concise introduction to the history of American animation. In considering all three major modes of production—artisanal, collaborative and industrial, each of which is clearly explained in the introduction—the book provides a well-rounded discussion of animation that will be sure to offer something for scholars, students and those with a passion for the art form. The most recent addition to the Behind the Silver Screen series, Animation gives due attention to an aspect of filmmaking that is often overlooked in similar film studies series. The collection is organised chronologically with the six body chapters providing an overview of animation from the lightning artists of the ... Read More

  • Making Sex Public, and Other Cinematic Fantasies by Damon R. Young
           (review)
    • Abstract: In Making Sex Public and Other Cinematic Fantasies, Damon R. Young considers the increased prevalence of on-screen sex beginning in late 1950s American and French cinema. Deftly moving between extended close readings and effective engagements with a broad range of critical theories, Young teases out the social tensions in cinematic depictions of sex, especially representations of women and queer subjects. These groups, Young writes, are at the center of “a narrative in which ideals of equality and autonomy…generate a complex and often contradictory set of imaginaries” (7). This early reference to “a” narrative is perhaps misleading as the book eschews any singular theory of screen sexuality, instead exploring a ... Read More
