  • Letter From the Editor
    • Abstract: Welcome to the latest issue of the Journal of Latin American Geography. As you may remember from our Call for Papers in early 2017, this issue of JLAG was conceptualized as a Special Issue on Decolonizing Latin Americanist Geography. Despite anticipating a robust response to this call, there were few submissions. It is worth reflecting on what that means for the future of Latin Americanist Geography.Following sustained calls for the decolonization of academic knowledge in the Area Studies literature, Martha Bell and I issued a call for articles in Spanish and Portuguese that would use the pages of JLAG as an exercise in the decolonization of academic knowledge in the Americas. While we did receive a number of very ... Read More

• Identifying Drivers and Spatial Patterns of Deforestation in the Rio
           Grande Basin, Colombia
    • Abstract: Humans have modified tropical forests for centuries (Ellis, 2011). Forest landscapes in Latin America are targeted for destruction to meet growing demands for food, water, and energy supply (Achard et al., 2002; Defries et al., 2010; Gibbs et al., 2010; Pacheco et al., 2011). The consequences of deforestation are multiple and complex, generating intersecting environmental effects on climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem service provision (Pimm & Raven, 2000; Pielke et al., 2002; Foley et al., 2005; Carr & Barbieri, 2006; Keese et al., 2007; Mahmood et al., 2014). Major changes in tropical forest cover can be identified by exploring land cover and land use transitions that are contingent upon social ... Read More

  • Who Drives Diaspora Development': Replication of Mexico’s
           3×1 Program in Yucatán
    • Abstract: In recent decades, origin country governments have shown increased interest in migration as remittances become central to less developed nations’ economies (Bakker, 2015). By the mid-1990s, remittances to developing countries surpassed official development aid, and by 2015 remittances were triple the value of aid (World Bank, 2015). Even in Mexico, a country with more than a century of notable and sustained migration history, remittances have garnered increased attention in recent years as volumes grow and data improves. For the first time in 2015, remittances surpassed petroleum as Mexico’s leading source of foreign exchange, drawing still greater attention to their economic centrality (Esteves, 2016). The value ... • Saneamiento Territorial in Nicaragua, and the Prospects for Resolving
           Indigenous-Mestizo Land Conflicts
    • Abstract: Conflicts between “indigenous people” and “migrants”—identified as non-indigenous mestizos—are intensifying across Latin American indigenous territories. These conflicts are seen as intimately related to indigenous territorial struggles, whereby mestizo migrants are widely blamed for colonizing indigenous lands (e.g. Finley-Brook 2016; Mollett 2016). One of the countries where this issue is perceived to be extremely urgent is Nicaragua, where territorial conflicts are violent and have led to the loss of dozens of lives, and where the situation has provoked a recent surge of scholarly and media attention (e.g. Herlihy 2016; Parker 2016; Baracco and González 2016b; Robles 2016; Galanova 2017).According to many of ... • Fugitive Slave Communities in Northern Brazil between 1880 and 1900:
Territoriality, Resistance, and the Struggle for Autonomy
    • Abstract: As the nineteenth century unfolded in Brazil, a succession of legal actions placed limits on the institution of slavery—the end of the trans-Atlantic slave trade in 1850, the Lei do Ventre Livre in 1871, and the Lei dos Sexagenários in 1885. During the same period, fugitive slave settlements (quilombos) proliferated rapidly in many of Brazil’s provinces.Quilombos have long formed part of Brazil’s physical and political landscape. While many quilombos were created by small groups of fugitive slaves, many others attained such geographical scope and numbers as to invoke mortal fear in the slave-owning classes. Quilombo activity (quilombagem) occurred throughout Brazil and can be traced to the beginnings of the ... Read More

  • Climate Sensitivity and Potential Vulnerability of Guatemalan Fir (Abies
           guatemalensis) Forests in Totonicapán, Guatemala
    • Abstract: Climate model projections suggest that future decreases in precipitation and rising temperatures will diminish soil moisture and increase aridity throughout Central America and the Caribbean (Magrin et al., 2014). These shifts make this region among the most susceptible in the world to the consequences of anthropogenic climate change (Giorgi, 2006). There is substantial evidence that this combination can also produce “hot drought,”which is expected to extend local tree mortality and forest vulnerability to a global scale (Allen et al., 2015). In addition to these significant changes in climate, agricultural expansion and continual increases in deforestation rates endanger forested lands and the ecosystem services ... Read More

  • Increasing Inequalities in Access to Forests and Forest Benefits in Mexico
    • Abstract: The success of community level forest management in Mexico has been widely reported (Klooster and Masera 2000; Bray et al. 2005; Ellis and Porter-Bolland 2008) and annual deforestation rates have been falling steadily (INECC 2015). However, while forest products and benefits of various types (e.g. timber, building poles, fuelwood, NTPFs, grazing areas) remain important for rural livelihoods, there is evidence that access to these resources is increasingly conditioned by socio-economic status, both within communities and among smallholders. To examine these trends in community forest management, we draw on our recent experience as participants in the workshop, “Acceso Equitativo y Gestión de Bienes Comunes Naturales ... • Anti-immigrant Sentiment, Rising Populism, and the Oaxacan Trump
    • Abstract: The election of donald trump marked a period of intense anti-immigrant nationalism and rising populism in the U.S. From promises to “build the wall” to verbal attacks on Mexican immigrants, Trump’s presidential campaign mobilized widespread racial anxieties and xenophobia. Similarly, anti-immigrant sentiment has surged across Europe in countries like the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Austria, and Germany. These developments have signaled a dramatic shift toward populist movements, exclusionary politics, and virulent nationalism. More recently, however, anti-immigrant sentiment has surfaced in unexpected places, outside the conventional contexts of Europe and the U.S. In southern Mexico, a rural politician ... Read More

  • Violent Green Spaces in Neoliberal Central America
    • Abstract: In the ten years since i wrote ‘green Neoliberal Space,’ international finance institutions (IFIs) have continued to intervene in Central America, but regional challenges are greater than ever. A decade ago, I never imagined per capita homicide rates in many Central American countries would rival the world’s deadliest war zones, as they do currently, with violence occurring even in protected areas. Similarly, I did not appreciate how grave Mesoamerican ecological threats were because it seemed these concerns were finally gaining overdue attention. In hindsight, I wish I had advocated for biological corridors and pointed out their essential roles in miticlimate change, supplying clean mitigating air and water, and ... Read More

  • Conjuring Property: Speculation and Environmental Futures in the Brazilian
Amazon by Jeremy M. Campbell (review)
    • Abstract: I worked with land reform and colonization in Brazil for many years. I was attracted to this topic by the fact that I was born in the Brazilian Amazon in the period of the opening of the Trans-Amazon Highway and its colonization projects. The opportunity to travel and visit colonization areas was unique and challenging, and it influenced my vision of land reform in Brazil. The book Conjuring Property: Speculation and Environmental Futures in the Brazilian Amazon brought many memories of countless visits to assentamentos (land reform sites). However, the memories that this book brought were not just good ones. Conjuring Property provides a good description of the role of the state and its colonization policies in ... Read More

  • Whither the Waters: Mapping the Great Basin from Bernardo de Miera to John
           C. Frémont by John L. Kessell (review)
    • Abstract: Historian john kessell adds to his earlier 2013 book on Bernardo de Miera y Pacheco, an important artist, cartographer, and figure of colonial New Mexico. He distinguishes this slim and beautifully illustrated volume as an addendum, but it is more than a tack-on treatise to his earlier work.Whither the Waters continues to illuminate Miera y Pacheco’s cartographic contributions. The 55 color plates included in the volume are stunning and make the work valuable for historians, cartographers, and colonial-period cultural scholars. Alone, they make the book worth purchasing. Yet Kessell does not stop at the simple excavation of these valuable primary visuals. He clearly and concisely makes the case that Miera y ... Read More

  • Cattle in the Backlands: Mato Grosso and the Evolution of Ranching in the
Brazilian Tropics by Robert W. Wilcox (review)
    • Abstract: Cattle in the backlands offers historical analysis of the halting nineteenth- and twentieth-century development of the ranching economy in a Brazilian “backland” or sertão. The book focuses on ranching, labor, land, and beef products in what is today Mato Grosso do Sul state (separated from Mato Grosso in the late 1970s) and southern areas of current Mato Grosso state, such as Cuiabá. One of many Brazilian “backlands,” southern Mato Grosso included the Pantanal wetlands and Cerrado savanna formations, at the fringe of the Brazilian economy until the mid-twentieth century.Wilcox depicts an extensive ranching system constrained by the physical environment, land tenure insecurity, poor access to credit, and long ... • The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World by
           Andrea Wulf (review)
    • Abstract: Alexander von humboldt (1769–1859) is a hero the world needs amidst worsening global environmental deterioration and societal challenges (pp. 396–398), an argument that unfolds elegantly in this well-written and intelligently researched book. The author, Andrea Wulf, a design historian and accomplished writer, fuses her own research and existing ideas to create a grand narrative of Humboldt’s vision and its legacy that is timely and compelling. To do so, Wulf expertly recounts a lively geographic history, from Humboldt’s childhood and family life to early career and formative influences (chapters 1–3), renowned travel and observations in the Americas (chapters 4–8), activities while residing and traveling in and ... • Volcanes y ecoturismo en México y América Central ed. by Lilliam Quirós
           Arias, Álvaro Sánchez Crispín (review)
    • Abstract: Tourism, like other human activities, has the power to re-signify territory. The territorial structure of tourism contains the nuclei that concentrate supply, services, and infrastructure; the channels linking the destination with the visitors and guaranteeing their mobility; and the tourist flows. This collection of studies surveys the conditions for exploration of volcano tourism at specific points in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. This book is the result of a partnership between the editors Álvares Sanches Crispin, from the Geography Institute of the Autonomous University of Mexico, and Liliam Quirós Arias, from the School of Geographical Sciences of the National University of Costa Rica.
