  • Unpaid Versus Paid Internships: Group Membership Makes the Difference
    • Abstract: Given that paid internships often lead to higher paying positions postgraduation and that women continue to earn less than men for the same position despite their level of education (Women's Bureau, 2017), we were interested to understand whether women and other underserved groups were more or less likely to participate in paid or unpaid internships in college compared with their peers. Colleges and universities provide opportunities and partnerships for underserved student groups to begin their careers on equal footing; therefore, exploring student characteristics associated with participating in paid versus unpaid internships yields valuable information for career counseling and internship programs. There are ... Read More

  • The Involvement of an External Organization in College Campuses'
           Mobilization Processes
    • Abstract: One critique of campus activism portrays student organizers as naïve young people who can be co-opted by the resources of powerful external organizations (Graham-Felsen, 2006)—organizations equipped with agendas and the financial resources to advance causes (Van Dyke, Dixon, & Carlon, 2007). The involvement of external agenda-based organizations in campus activism creates the potential to exploit campus-based college student organizers. In fact, the channeling argument (Jenkins, 1998) posits that, as part of an overall movement strategy, external groups work to control or exploit other movement actors for their own benefit by directing their resources in ways that achieve these ends. To guard against such potential ... Read More

  • Supporting Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disability in
           Postsecondary Education
    • Abstract: Following a sustained increase in the number of inclusive educational experiences in K–12 settings (U.S. Department of Education, 2019), higher education institutions (HEIs) are offering opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) to engage in inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE; Think College, 2019). Although many students with mild disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities or ADHD) are able to succeed in college with disability support services, these supports are not enough for individuals with IDD. As a result, IPSE opportunities may be available to students with any number of conditions that make traditional entrance requirements unattainable (e.g., Down Syndrome, Autism ... Read More

  • Expanding the Student Employment Literature: Investigating the Practice of
           Reflection in On-Campus Student Employment
    • Abstract: As the cost of attending postsecondary education increases, a growing number of college students seek and obtain employment while attending school (Carnevale, Smith, Melton, & Price, 2015; Davis, 2012). Existing research concerning college student employment typically addresses the same question: Is working during college related to students' academic performance' This study offers a new angle on this question consistent with themes of student learning and development. Instead of asking if student employment affects students' academics, we asked how could student employment be enhanced to better ensure academic benefit to student employees.Over the past two decades, dozens of studies have reported the relationship ... • Maybe I Should: Case Studies on Ethics for Student Affairs Professionals
(2nd edition) ed. by Mimi Benjamin and Jody Jessup-Anger (review)
    • Abstract: Over a decade ago, a class assignment in a second-year master's course in a student affairs program led to the creation of the first edition of Maybe I Should: Case Studies on Ethics by Student Affairs Professionals (Hamrick & Benjamin, 2009). Sometimes when second editions are published, there is an impression that it is just the same content with a few things touched up. This is not the case with Maybe I Should. With Jessup-Anger joining Benjamin as coeditor, they have provided a timely and important resource intended for young professionals but certainly worth a read for mid-level managers and possibly senior-level student affairs staff. The book breaks into two sections: chapters 1 and 2 focus on explaining and ... • Rethinking LGBTQIA Students and Collegiate Contexts: Identity, Policies,
and Campus Climate ed. by Eboni M. Zamani-Gallaher, Devika Dibya
Choudhuri, and Jason L. Taylor (review)
    • Abstract: As noted by leading scholar Kristen Renn in the Foreword of this edited volume: "Paradoxically, college is both better than ever and as bad as, in some cases worse, than it has ever been for LGBTQIA college students" (p. vii). Both historical and contemporary accounts back up this assertion (Graves, 2018; Lange, Duran, & Jackson, 2019). Alongside recent scholarship that explores queer and trans college student contexts (e.g., Nicolazzo, 2017; Stewart, Renn, & Brazelton, 2015), Zamani-Gallaher, Choudhuri, and Taylor offer in this new text a collection of "work that blends both theory and practice" toward an expansive understanding of identities, contexts, policies, and possibilities (p. xi).Consistent with the ... • Abstract: Many scholars have argued that higher education in the US should enhance students' cultural competency if they are to effectively engage across differences in socially constructed identities, values, and beliefs and work together to improve society (American Association of Colleges and Universities, 2007; Bowen, 1999). In service of this aim, researchers have examined the educational practices and conditions that increase students' awareness of other cultures and their openness to diversity (Bowman, 2012; Bowman & Park, 2015; Engberg, 2004; Gurin, Dey, Hurtado, & Gurin, 2002; Shim & Perez, 2018). This scholarship has enhanced educators' understandings of how to create interventions and campus environments that ... Read More

  • "We Wear the Mask": Self-Definition as an Approach to Healing From Racial
           Battle Fatigue
    • Abstract: In 1913, Dunbar penned a parable about the strategic, embodied poses that Black bodies (Hill, 2017) deploy to negotiate the racism that confronts them on a daily basis:We wear the mask that grins and lies,It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—This debt we pay to human guile; With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,And mouth with myriad subtleties.(Dunbar, 1913, para. 1)We frame the body after Hill (2017), as a mental, emotional, spiritual, physiological, and spatial construct, always mediated through history. "The mask" becomes the various representations Black people wear to be legible—that is, palatable—in the presence of whiteness (Frankenberg, 1997). Herein, we understand whiteness* asa location ... • Applying Critical Whiteness Studies in College Student Development Theory
           and Research
    • Abstract: In recent years college student development theory and research have increasingly shifted from an exclusive focus on individual development toward a more explicit emphasis on how systems of power and oppression influence these processes (Abes, 2016; Abes, Jones, & Stewart, 2019; Jones & Stewart, 2016). Jones and Stewart (2016) described this evolution as "the third wave of student development theory," wherein are considered "the contextual influences that inform how people come to know, understand, and articulate who they are and what they judge to be true, right, and good" (p. 23). Further, third wave theorists attend "to the ways that identity classifications (of race, sexuality, gender, disability) reproduce and ... Read More

  • (Re)Membering the Body: Identity Development and College Student Trauma
    • Abstract: Traumatic experiences often bring the body to the forefront. In the aftermath of trauma, survivors report the ways their traumatic experiences continue to manifest in the fabric of their bodies (Levine, 2010; van der Kolk, 2014). Survivors may confront ripples of trauma that present as jumpiness, sleep disturbances, aches, or other bodily sensations that seem to permeate their post-trauma realities (Briere & Scott, 2015; Ogden, Minton, & Pain, 2006; van der Kolk, 2014). Survivors can feel "unsafe in their bodies" (van der Kolk, 2014, p. 96). Torn between feeling too much or not feeling enough in the body (Levine, 2010), survivors of trauma may feel overwhelmed by "visceral warning signs" (van der Kolk, 2014, p. 97) ... Read More

  • Positive Development on Campus: Investigating the Psychometric Properties
of the College Assets Measurement Profile for Undergraduate Students
    • Abstract: Defined as the age from approximately 18 to 29 years, emerging adulthood often includes frequent relocation, pursuit of higher education or training, changes to relationship status and worldview, shifts to financial and decision-making independence, and an overall feeling of being in between roles and selves (Arnett, 2000, 2004; Arnett, Kloep, Hendry, & Tanner, 2011; Arnett & Taber, 1994). The emergence process from late adolescence to young adulthood is a phase of life wrought with uncertainty, possibility, instability, growth, and change. For some, this period includes positive self-focus and a meaningful search for autonomous identity; for others, this time of life introduces chaos and impediment. While there can ... Read More

  • Community Identity Development and Interpersonal Development in Tertiary
           Education in Trinidad and Tobago
    • Abstract: Over the past two decades, participation in tertiary education in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) has skyrocketed, up from 7% of the total population in 2001 to over 65% by the end of 2013 (Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, 2014; Herbert & Lochan, 2014). As Altbach, Reisberg, and Rumbley (2009) have noted, when higher education systems expand rapidly, they "initially struggle just to cope with the demand" (p. 2); over time, however, higher education practitioners turn their focus to how to best support those students who are enrolled and to higher-order questions of student learning and development (e.g., United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO], 2009). Mirroring this ... Read More
