  • Reconsidering the Effects of Work on College Student Leadership
           Development: An Empirical Perspective
    • Abstract: Working for pay remains one of the most common out-of-class experiences among undergraduates. Recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics indicate that in the 2015 fall semester 43% of full-time students and 78% of part-time students worked while enrolled (Snyder, de Brey, & Dillow, 2018) and trends in college costs and financial aid (College Board, 2019) suggest that students will continue to finance their education, at least in part, through employment. In light of this reality, researchers have continued a decades-long trend of examining the impacts of work on the college student experience and on particular college outcomes (e.g., Mayhew et al., 2016). Despite voluminous research on the ... Read More

  • Distance, Alignment, and Boundaries: How Second-Generation Immigrant
           College Seniors Negotiate Parental Involvement
    • Abstract: The senior year of college represents an important transition involving social and economic pressures, increasing independence, and the disruption of familiar routines (Gardner, Van der Veer, & Associates, 1998; Hunter, Keup, Kinzie, & Maietta, 2012). For traditional-age college students, this transition is often marked by conflicted feelings surrounding the emergence of adulthood and changing relationships with families (Silver & Roksa, 2017; Skipper, 2012; Yazedjian, Kielaszek, & Toews, 2010). Scholars have explored the senior-year transitions of some historically underrepresented groups, documenting challenges encountered by these students and finding evidence of their resilience (e.g., Allen & Taylor, 2006; ... • Using Crip Theory to Reimagine Student Development Theory as Disability
           Justice
    • Abstract: Student development theory is an evolving field, necessarily so in order to describe the development of diverse college students and reflect changing sociocultural contexts. Jones and Stewart (2016) characterized the evolution of student development theory through the image of three waves. Jones (2019) explained that the three waves, which are modeled after feminist theorizing, are not necessarily chronological; instead, theories fit into the waves based on their characteristics. Much like those of the ocean, the waves build on one another and overlap, and theories from multiple waves might be simultaneously applied (Jones, 2019).The first wave (e.g., Chickering & Reisser, 1993; Perry, 1968), typically positivist ... • The Influence of Academic, Social, and Deeper Life Interactions on
           Students' Psychological Sense of Community
    • Abstract: For decades, student success in college has been linked to student engagement through outcomes such as GPA, academic development, persistence, and graduation rates (Astin, 1993; Kuh, 2008; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Tinto, 1987). Inherent in Tinto's (1987) institutional departure model and the revisions to this model made by Braxton, Hirschy, and McClendon (2004) is the conceptualization of the college experience as an interactive one—with formal and informal aspects within the academic and social experiences of students. Although distinctive, both of these integrative systems—academic and social—are essential to student success and operate through interactions with faculty, staff, and peers. When institutions ... • "Why Can't I Just Chill'": The Visceral Nature of Racial Battle
           Fatigue
    • Abstract: In Between the World and Me, Coates (2015) described racism as a visceral experience felt on the body. As Black people move through the world, they face daily exposure to racism. Some of these racist experiences are overt, while others are microaggressions, subtle, small, repeated acts of racism that accumulate over time, leading Black people to feel exhausted (Pierce, 1995; Sue, 2010). When Black people experience the accumulated effects of racism, this is called racial battle fatigue (Smith, Allen, & Danley, 2007). Black people are literally tired from the effects of racism, but it is not just the exhaustion that matters. Racial battle fatigue has deleterious health effects on Black people—stress, depression ... Read More

           Cohort of International Students
    • Abstract: For the past decade, studies on identity among Chinese-speaking international students (CSIS) progressed in two distinct directions. One group chronicled the identity changes that happened in students' lives in the West (e.g., Gill, 2010; Gu, Schweisfurth, & Day, 2010; Hsieh, 2006; Zhang & Goodson, 2011), while the other reported changes in international students' identities after they had completed their overseas education in English-speaking countries and returned home (e.g., Cuthbert, Smith, & Boey, 2008; Hao & Welch, 2012; Moores & Popadiuk, 2011; Wang, 2010; Yan & Berliner, 2011). Despite the difference in the stages of life that international students' identity development has been examined, both research ... Read More

  • Identifying Meaningful Individual-Level Change in Educational Experiences:
           Adding to Our Methodological Toolkit
    • Abstract: In recent years, improving the quantitative methods used to assess the effect of college, and particular college experiences, on student outcomes has received increased attention (e.g., Mayhew et al., 2016). In How College Affects Students, Mayhew et al. (2016) highlighted the importance of issues of practical vs. statistical significance, self-selection into college (and by extension, self-selection into particular experiences), and direct and indirect effects, among other methodological challenges in identifying the relationships between college experiences and student learning and success. One particularly difficult challenge is identifying the conditional effects of experiences on student outcomes. Who ... Read More

  • Mentorship During College Transition Predicts Academic Self-Efficacy and
Sense of Belonging Among STEM Students
    • Abstract: The demand for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduates has increased significantly over the last decade. Because of the insufficient number of STEM graduates, this demand has not been met, resulting in a significant shortage of STEM workers in the US (President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, 2012). By 2025, the US is projected to have over 2 million unfilled STEM jobs. This shortage is even more pronounced among groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in STEM, for example, women, African Americans, and Latinxs (National Science Foundation, 2018). Meanwhile, diversity in STEM companies has been shown to relate to greater company earnings, productivity, and ... Read More

  • Does Language Background Have an Effect on the Development of
           Psychological Well-Being During College'
    • Abstract: According to the 2017 American Community Survey, more than 1 in 5 US residents speak a language other than English at home, and many are nonnative-English speakers (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). Among this fast-growing population, nonnative-English-speaking (NNES) college students are significantly underserved and under-researched (Kanno & Cromley, 2013). NNES students are largely Students of Color; they are a diverse group that include immigrants, those born and raised in the US who learn English as a second language, and international students from non-English-speaking countries (Curry, 2004). Since language is the defining characteristic, existing research on this population at the college level has largely focused ... Read More

  • Using Immersive Video Camera Technology to Enhance Online Graduate
           Preparation Courses
    • Abstract: Creating meaningful and engaging online learning experiences is a challenge in graduate preparation programs. In student affairs, the number of online master's degree programs has increased from 6 in 2010 (Connolly & Diepenbrock, 2011) to over 40 fully online programs currently (T. Svoboda, personal communication, January 3, 2019). The emergent field of digital pedagogy offers a framework to enhance online instruction and to examine the intersections between technological tools, learning, and the individuals who occupy online spaces (Morris & Stommel, 2019). The use of visuals and immersive video technology is an evolving approach within digital pedagogy (Kelly & Kortegast, 2018; McCaslin & Young, 2015). While K–12 ... Read More

  • Undocumented Student Resource Centers
    • Abstract: Over the last decade, institutions of higher education have begun to respond to the plight and mobilization of undocumented students by institutionalizing undocumented student support services. Undocumented student resource centers (USRCs) are a product of such efforts. USRCs are physical spaces on higher education campuses where centralized services and resources for undocumented students are provided. USRC staff strive to create welcoming and supportive studentcentered environments that enhance students' experiences, nurture civic and community engagement, and promote their mental health and well-being (Canedo Sanchez & So, 2015). Further, they seek to actively address exclusionary institutional policies and ... Read More

  • Fostering Faculty Diversity by Supporting Access to Graduate Study in
           Education
    • Abstract: Student enrollment in higher education has become increasingly diverse (Cook & Córdova, 2007), but progress toward hiring sociodemographically diverse faculty remains slow (Snyder, de Brey, & Dillow, 2019; Turner, González, & Wood, 2008). Faculty diversity is crucial for a variety of important outcomes, including academic success and student development (Stanley, 2006; Stout, Archie, Cross, & Carman, 2018). Moreover, the presence of faculty from underrepresented groups can advance research and teaching in new directions as scholars draw on diverse perspectives (Umbach, 2006). Recent data indicates that 43% of college students in the US identify with racial and ethnic minority groups, compared with just 23% of ... Read More

  • From Disability to Diversity: College Success for Students with Learning
Disabilities, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder by Lynne C. Shea, Linda
Hecker, and Adam R. Lalor (review)
    • Abstract: In From Disability to Diversity, Shea, Hecker, and Lalor provide an accessible introduction to the pressing equity gaps that disabled students face in postsecondary learning environments. They then use this discussion to advance strategies that faculty members, student affairs professionals, and higher education administrators can utilize to create more welcoming, accessible learning environments. Notably, they are not the first authors to have attempted this task. In recent years, for example, comprehensive treatments of disability in higher education (e.g., Evans, Broido, Brown, & Wilkie, 2017), multifaceted examinations of disability in the context of student success (e.g., Kim & Aquino, 2017), nuanced ... • Straddling Class in the Academy: 26 Stories of Students, Administrators,
and Faculty From Poor and Working-Class Backgrounds and Their Compelling
Lessons for Higher Education Policy and Practice by Sonja Ardoin and Becky
           Martinez (review)
    • Abstract: In Straddling Class in the Academy, Sonja Ardoin and becky martinez bring 26 individuals together to discuss how social class has impacted their journeys through higher education. They do this because "there is critical learning to be had from those poor or working-class backgrounds, particularly in the academy, because it is founded on and immersed in elitism" (p. 6). Each chapter focuses on a particular group of people, starting with current undergraduate students, moving to faculty and administrators, and ending with individuals who have left higher education. Within each chapter are narratives from three individuals on how they experienced class, because "stories can be used as a platform to inform higher ... Read More
