  • "Socialized Into the Field": Exploring How Higher Education and Student
Affairs Faculty Members Are Socialized to Teach Student Development Theory

    • Abstract: Student development theory (SDT) is a foundation for the field of higher education and student affairs (HESA; McEwen, 2003; McEwen & Talbot, 1998; Patton, McEwen, Rendón, & Howard-Hamilton, 2007; Patton, Renn, Guido, & Quaye, 2016). Student development theories provide "a common language and shared understanding" (Reason & Kimball, 2012, p. 368) for campus professionals "to identify and address student needs, design programs, develop policies, and create healthy college environments that encourage positive growth in students" (Patton et al., 2016, p. 8). The understanding that SDT is a common language and guiding principle for the profession may be why most US HESA graduate preparation programs offer SDT courses ... Read More

  • Multiracial Identities and Monoracism: Examining the Influence of
           Oppression
    • Abstract: Recent advances in scholarship have focused on better understanding critical approaches to multiraciality (e.g., Harris, 2016, 2017a), the role of microaggressions and stereotypes that affect multiracial students (e.g., Harris, 2017b; Museus, Sariñana, Yee, & Robinson, 2016; Nadal et al., 2011), and discursive claims about multiraciality in relation to the concept of race (e.g., Johnston-Guerrero & Chaudhari, 2016). These studies, among others, have brought overdue attention to the experiences and discourse regarding multiracial communities within the context of higher education, while also challenging longstanding norms and assumptions about multiraciality. Despite such scholarly advances, studies specifically ... Read More

  • Understanding Student Persistence in Commuter Historically Black Colleges
           and Universities
    • Abstract: College student persistence constitutes a significant problem for many colleges and universities. Lower persistence rates harmfully affect the stability of enrollments, budgets, and the public perception of institutional quality, not to mention measurable student outcomes such as degree completion (Braxton, Hirschy & McClendon, 2004). The average national rate of first-to-second-year persistence stands at 68.5%, with rates varying from an average low of 56.4% for 2-year public colleges to an average high of 81.5% for private doctorate-granting universities (American College Testing Program, 2016). For Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a subset of minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and the ... Read More

  • "We Are Legit Now": Establishing Undocumented Student Resource Centers on
           Campus
    • Abstract: According to the Pew Hispanic Center, in 2010 an estimated 16.6 million people in the United States lived in mixed-status households where at least one parent lacked lawful immigration status (Taylor, Lopez, Passel, & Motel, 2011). Among this group, nearly 800,000 were recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections, and more than 200,000 were Central Americans with temporary protected status. Further, a 2015 report by the UndocuScholars Project estimated that about 200,000 to 225,000 undocumented immigrants were enrolled in higher education, accounting for about 2% of all higher education students (Teranishi, Suárez-Orozco, & Suárez-Orozco, 2015).A growing number of researchers has sought ... • Understanding the Self-Regulated Learning Characteristics of
           First-Generation College Students
    • Abstract: Higher education is widely acknowledged as the surest path to upward social mobility (e.g., Bowen, Kurzweil, & Tobin, 2005). Over their lifetimes, individuals with a bachelor's degree can expect to earn 84% more than individuals with only a high school diploma (Carnevale, Rose, & Cheah, 2011). Yet, for many first-generation college students (FGCS), college success has not kept pace with college access (Kena et al., 2015; Reford, Hoyer, & Ralph, 2017). As campuses nationwide shift to a more broadly defined student body (Darling-Hammond, 2010), FGCS are growing in significance as a "diverse, yet distinct group, both demographically and in terms of educational outcomes" (Ecklund, 2013, p. 159). From an economic ... Read More

    • Abstract: Institutions of higher education play an important role in equipping students to enter the adult world of work and to engage in societal life. Young adults are challenged to form opinions, argue their positions, and interpret complex information from varied sources and in novel situations (Baxter Magolda, 2001; Kegan 1994). The successful negotiation of these challenges necessitates the development of individual perspectives, values, beliefs, and an internal sense of identity. This requires significant growth in terms of epistemological, intrapersonal, and interpersonal dynamics, as well as a journey towards a self-authored identity. Using Baxter Magolda's (2001) theory of self-authorship as framework, we explored ... Read More

  • Development of the Measure of Obstacles to Succeeding Academically in
           College (MOSAIC)
    • Abstract: College enrollment has nearly doubled during the past five decades (Center for Education Statistics, 1993; McFarland et al., 2018). Of all first-time, full-time students pursuing a bachelor's degree at 4-year institutions, 60% graduate within 6 years of enrollment (McFarland et al., 2018), and little improvement in graduation rates has been seen in the recent past (National Center for Education Statistics, 2017). Completing college is not only a function of institutional characteristics and program attributes, but also individual-level behaviors and experiences. Academic advisors play a large role in college student retention; however, no tools exist to facilitate an advisor's ability to identify student barriers ... Read More

  • Prevalence and Correlates of Food Insecurity and Homelessness Among
           University Students
    • Abstract: Recently, there has been a steep increase in attention to insecurity among college students for basic needs (e.g., Miles, McBeath, Brockett, & Sorenson, 2017; Morris, Smith, Davis, & Null, 2016); however, published research on student food insecurity and housing insecurity remains sparse. It is critical to understand the prevalence of these challenges because they are associated with mental health functioning, academic success, and graduation rates (see Goldrick-Rab, Richardson, Schneider, Hernandez, & Cady, 2018). Prior studies (Miles et al., 2017; Tsui et al., 2011) point to high co-occurrence of food insecurity and homelessness, so the intersection of these challenges should be explored. To prevent basic needs ... Read More

  • Assessing Hope in Student Veterans
    • Abstract: Veterans are an increasing population in postsecondary education, and they experience challenges when they transition from the military to college (Elliott, Gonzalez, & Larsen, 2011). In order to improve understanding of adjustment to college life and the related stressors among the student veteran population, investigations are warranted to explore the impact of hope on this adjustment process. Hope has become a major focus in predicting both psychological and physical outcomes in children and adults (Chang & DeSimone, 2001), yet it has not been thoroughly examined as a protective factor for mental health in student veterans. Hope is defined as a positive state of mind based on the successful combination of agency ... Read More

  • First-Year Fellowship: Fostering an Inclusive Community Within Honors
    • Abstract: The transition to college life presents myriad opportunities, hurdles, and learning experiences. In honors education, we emphasize the importance of building community. In this article, we will showcase a program developed to engage first-semester honors students in community through cocurricular activities designed to raise their awareness of diversity, inclusion, equity, and access within the university community. We intended for this program to provide the framework necessary for students to create unique friendships that enrich their first-year experiences. Through building community, students begin to understand the diverse perspectives of others. By providing a safe environment for fellowship and friendship ... Read More

  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: In this issue, we present a two-part review of Stevie Johnson's (2019) dissertation album, The Space Program Presents Curriculum of the Mind. A review of alternative scholarship media represents a new direction for JCSD that we wanted to acknowledge. Foremost, this is not a review of media, but a review of a research medium presented as an album. Penny Pasque explains: "Similar to hip-hip research / arts-based research, the album 'is' the research to be reviewed—much like a book of a dissertation would be reviewed. It is the culmination of focus groups, thematic analysis, critical inquiry, action research—where findings and analyses are in the album itself." Although not a traditional (nor familiar) product of ... Read More

  • The Space Program Presents Curriculum of the Mind Stevie "Dr. View"
           Johnson (review)
    • Abstract: Stevie Johnson's 2019 dissertation album, The Space Program Presents Curriculum of the Mind (TSP), is a deliberate unabashed groove that encapsulates some defining lived experiences represented by the entwining of Blackness and maleness. The compilation allows intersectional identities to stand bare yet complicated, unlike the normalized depiction of Black males as simply nonreflexive superpredators (Averick, Barish, DuVernay, & DuVernay, 2016). In challenging stereotypical tropes, TSP is testifying about how deception, anti-Blackness and redemption complicate Black male educational trajectories. Arguably, TSP is a response to The Space Traders (Bell, 1992), a provocative short story that shows White Americans ... Read More

  • The Space Program Presents Curriculum of the Mind Stevie "Dr. View"
           Johnson (review)
    • Abstract: In Race Matters, Cornell West (2017) wrote:The distinctive benchmark of Black music is soulful kenosis—the courageous and compassionate styles of genuine selfemptying that give all one is and has to empower, enable, and ennoble others. In this metaphoric way, the greatest Black musicians and Black freedom fighters are the truth, in that they embody and enact a radical love (especially for an unloved people) by freely giving all they are and have to inspire and encourage others. The conditions of truth is to allow suffering to speak, and the condition of being the truth is to transform your suffering with great creativity and compassion into forms and deeds that empower others to do likewise in their own ways. • White Guys on Campus: Racism, White Immunity, and the Myth of
"Post-Racial" Higher Education Nolan L. Cabrera (review)
    • Abstract: Nolan Cabrera's central goals with the book are (a) to explore White supremacy and White immunity in higher education and (b) to explore how the views and attitudes of White male undergraduate students "lead to the marginalization of Students of Color on college campuses and what can be done to transform this social structure/practice" (p. 16). Cabrera conducted interviews with 29 White men students between 2007 and 2008 at Southwestern University (a public R1 in the Southwest US, population of 40,000) and Western University (a selective R1 on the US West Coast with a population of 40,000).What sets Cabrera's book apart from recent texts about race/racism and higher education (Arday & Mirza, 2018; Park, 2018; Picca ...
