  • In Pursuit of Success: Latino Male College Students Exercising Academic
           Determination and Community Cultural Wealth
    • Abstract: Little is known about Latino males’ academic determination in higher education. Academic determination is characterized by students’ motivation to succeed and willingness to invest effort to achieve their goals in college (Schreiner, 2010). Most studies about Latino male college students focus on their low enrollment, persistence, and completion rates (Clark, Ponjuan, Orrock, Wilson, & Flores, 2013; Gloria, Castellanos, Scull, & Villegas, 2009; Sáenz & Ponjuan, 2009). Although Latino males contend with structural forces that undermine their success (Noguera, Hurtado, & Fergus, 2012), educators are likely to conclude that they are unmotivated, lack appropriate educational goals, and are unlikely to succeed in higher ... • Shaping Students’ Civic Commitments: The Influence of College
           Cocurricular Involvement
    • Abstract: In recent years, the tempo for embracing higher education’s civic and democratic purposes has hastened. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U, n.d.) has been one of the most visible voices on this topic. Through its series of projects over the past decade, including programs such as Liberal Education and America’s Promise, Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement, Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility, and The Educated Citizen and Public Health (see http://www.aacu.org/), the AAC&U has directed attention toward multiple aspects of civic education and learning. The U.S. Department of Education (2012) also put forth Advancing Civic Learning and Engagement ... Read More

  • Racialized Aggressions and Social Media on Campus
    • Abstract: During the recent polarized national discourse on racism, the intersection of social media and online racial hate has come to the attention of higher education. Although social media are ubiquitous on today’s campuses, little attention has been dedicated to the emergence of online campus racism, and its impact on students of color (SOC). This is despite the fact that incidents of online racialized offenses on college campuses have become common across a number of institutions. Recent cases documenting virtual racism include threatening comments toward Black students at the University of Missouri on Erodr (Kravarik, 2015); the emergence of racial hostility at the University of Texas at Austin, Boston College, and ... • Intersections at a (Heteronormative) Crossroad: Gender and Sexuality Among
           Black Students’ Spiritual-and-Religious Narratives
    • Abstract: Higher education researchers are becoming increasingly attentive to American college students’ spiritual lives (Astin, Astin, & Lindholm, 2011; Rockenbach & Mayhew, 2012). Collectively, however, fewer scholars have invested equitable energies in better understanding Black students’ spiritual and religious experiences as well as exploring the form and content of Black undergraduates’ spiritual identities. Yet, substantial evidence points to the centrality of religion and spirituality among Black communities (Hunt & Hunt, 2001; Jackson, 2005). Historically, many Blacks deployed religion as a subversive ideological tool, such as within the struggle against the dehumanizing, yet constitutionally authorized system of ... Read More

  • Impact of Intercollegiate Athletic Participation on Leadership Development
    • Abstract: The benefits of athletic participation for students and the institution are key discussion topics for those interested in higher education and college sports. Many undergraduate institutions fund and publicize sports and sporting events more than other types of social and academic activities (Duderstadt, 2003). In 2008, Division I public schools used nearly $800 million of student fees to support their athletic programs, an 18% increase from 2005 (Berkowitz, Upton, McCarthy, & Gillum, 2010). Advocates often contend that leadership development is an important product of intercollegiate sports participation. For example, the website of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) boasts anecdotes detailing ... Read More

  • Influence of Social Factors on Student Satisfaction Among College Students
           With Disabilities
    • Abstract: Higher education has been called “the key to unlocking the middle class—or better” (Carnevale, Smith, & Strohl, 2010, p. 3) and “crucial to the pursuit of high-quality vocational opportunities (Reinschmiedt, Spring, Dallas, Buono, & Upton, 2013, p. 3). These words continue to ring true for many young Americans, including those who have disabilities. A college education, perhaps now more than ever, is critical for work opportunities, including higher wages, the ability to work more hours, and maintaining upward social mobility (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2013, 2014; Carnevale et al., 2010). Despite the fact that an increasingly large number of high school graduates are pursuing a postsecondary education, over ... Read More

  • “Quaring” Spirituality: The Spiritual Counterstories and Spaces of
Black Gay and Bisexual Male College Students
    • Abstract: Spirituality plays a significant role in the lives of college students (Astin, Astin, & Lindholm, 2011); however, Black gay and bisexual cisgender men are uniquely positioned with regards to spirituality given how the social location of identities includes at least two marginalized social identities—racial identity (i.e., Black) and sexual orientation identity (i.e., gay or bisexual)—as well as at least one dominant identity (i.e., cisgender men). Cisgender gender queer men are privileged in a society embedded in patriarchy and cissexism (Kirk & Okazawa-Rey, 2010). The primary purpose of this study was to explore how Black gay and bisexual men (BGABM) in higher education experience oppression during their spiritual ... Read More

  • Racial Differences in College Students’ Assessments of Campus Race
           Relations
    • Abstract: In the United States, growth of the immigrant and minority populations (Camarota, 2011; Humes, Jones, & Ramirez, 2011) is diversifying many predominantly White colleges and universities that have worked to make curricula and policies supportive of racial/ethnic diversity (N. Denson & Chang, 2009). Diversity brings positive and negative consequences to American higher education. For many students, college offers the first opportunity to interact with people in racial/ethnic groups not their own and to examine racism and racial inequality in depth (Harwood, Huntt, Mendenhall, & Lewis, 2012; Rankin & Reason, 2005). College education in a diverse environment prepares students for future work environments, which often ... Read More

  • An Intervention Using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® on Fostering Narrative
Identity Among Economically Disadvantaged College Students in Taiwan
    • Abstract: In their study titled “Depressive Symptoms, Socio-Economic Background, Sense of Control, and Cultural Factors in University Students from 23 Countries,” Steptoe, Tsuda, Tanaka, and Wardle (2007) revealed that Taiwanese college students displayed the highest levels of depressive symptoms, which were more prevalent among Taiwanese students from relatively poor family backgrounds. Similarly, the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (2010) reported that 83% of Taiwanese youth aged 12 to 26 who were from economically disadvantaged families experienced mild to serious emotional distress. Accumulation of economic disadvantages negatively impacts individuals’ physical, psychological, and emotional development and growth ... Read More

  • Bullying Victimization, College Adjustment, and the Role of Coping
    • Abstract: Few studies have evaluated the long-term social and psychological impacts of bullying, particularly as they may manifest among young adults navigating the transition to college. What if, unlike the popular campaign suggests, it does not always “get better” for bullied youth after leaving secondary school and entering college (It Gets Better Project, 2013)? We investigated the relationship between previous bullying victimization and adjustment to college, as well as the potential moderating role of coping style. The majority of earlier research has focused on characteristics of primary and secondary school bullies and victims. Olweus (1993) indicated that few outcomes for former victims of bullying differed from ... Read More

  • An Inside View: The Utility of Quantitative Observation in Understanding
           College Educational Experiences
    • Abstract: The learning outcomes assessment movement has given rise to several new ways to consider student outcomes, including self-reported learning outcomes, standardized tests, and analysis of student work (Ewell, 2008; Kuh, 2001; Rhodes, 2012). In this context, the field of higher education and student affairs continues to play an important role in developing an understanding of the student experiences in educational practices that bring forth these outcomes (Calhoun, 1996; Inkelas & Weisman, 2003; Kuh, 2009). The field has developed rich theory and applications to practice that point to the complex dynamics among students’ individual, social, and historical contexts, their lived experiences, and their educational ... • Correlates of Psychotherapy Use Among Ethnically Diverse College Students
    • Abstract: College student mental health is a public health concern. Mental health disorders that are diagnosed early in life have been found to predict educational attainment, employment and productivity, and interpersonal relationships (Byrd & McKinney, 2012; Eisenberg, Speer, & Hunt, 2012; Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010). Mental health issues among college students are usually related to adjustment and developmental challenges. Throughout the years, mental health problems in college students have grown in complexity and severity. The literature and news media have reported several incidents related to mental health issues among college students that have led to tragic events (e.g., Castillo & Schwartz, 2013; Hunt & Eisenberg ... • Student Affairs Assessment: Theory to Practice by Gavin W. Henning and
           Darby Roberts (review)
    • Abstract: Gavin Henning and Darby Roberts sought to fill in a gap in the student affairs literature primarily for students seeking a master’s degree. They certainly succeeded in this endeavor by co-authoring a relatively concise, yet still comprehensive, book entitled Student Affairs Assessment: Theory to Practice. The emphasis on the latter portion of the book’s title rings true throughout the text, as the book integrates the theoretical aspects of student affairs assessment into a variety of tangible examples accessible for a variety of learners and practitioners alike. The idea of assessing satisfaction, effectiveness, and learning in student affairs is certainly not new. In fact, the authors do an excellent job of tying ... Read More

  • Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession ed. by John H. Schuh,
Susan R. Jones, and Vasti Torres (review)
    • Abstract: Since first issued in 1980, Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession, affectionately known as the “Green Book,” has served as one of the cornerstone sourcebooks in preparing, guiding, and shaping student affairs educators. As the profession has evolved, so has this reference; subsequent editions were published in 1989, 1996, 2003, and 2011. The third edition, now a little worn, still sits on my bookshelf, a fond reminder of my beginnings as a student affairs educator. This newest edition, edited by John H. Schuh, Susan R. Jones, and Vasti Torres, seems at first glance very similar to the 5th edition, but a closer review reveals shifts in the organization and the content of the book. Many of the previous ... Read More
