  • The Role of Political Engagement in College Students’ Civic Identity:
           Longitudinal Findings From Recent Graduates
    • Abstract: In response to dwindling civic and political engagement in the United States, colleges and universities have invested significantly in efforts designed to reverse this trend among college students in the past two decades. Starting with a surge in volunteering and a subsequent boom in service-learning, alternative breaks, and other short-term immersion programs, college students have demonstrated a considerable increase in their civic engagement. The collective impact of these experiences influences an identity construct conceptualized as a civic identity, which comprises one’s beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors regarding civic engagement (Johnson, 2015). Knefelkamp (2008) argued educators should consider ... Read More

  • From Self-Authorship to Self-Definition: Remapping Theoretical Assumptions
           Through Black Feminism
    • Abstract: Hi, Wilson!I wanted to ask you another question. How do you feel about being black* in this country'Let me explain what exactly I mean. I am extremely proud of my heritage. My parents are hardworking immigrants who came from Haiti, a country that had many problems. Despite their challenges, they were able to carve a path for themselves and have successful careers. I have learned that many of my ancestors, both from the US and Haiti, had to stand up against terrible things such as slavery, Jim Crow, and other forms of racial discrimination. And they prevailed and made it better for the next generation. I am honestly proud to be black. But, at the same time, I’m scared. Ever since Trayvon Martin’s death, I’ve been ... Read More

  • “People See Me, But They Don’t See Me”: An Intersectional Study of
           College Students With Physical Disabilities
    • Abstract: Rampant ableism marginalizes college students with disabilities despite accommodations offered by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). In higher education, attention to disability is often medical and law-driven, focusing on impairment and accommodations with little consideration to how ableism shapes the experiences of students with disabilities who encounter barriers accessing and participating in college (Evans, Broido, Brown, & Wilkie, 2017). Higher education practitioners’ typical approach to disability is characterized as the medical model, which focuses on disability as an impairment in need of cure, generally portraying people with disabilities as tragic burdens. In contrast, the social model of ... Read More

  • Exploring the Middle Eastern American College Student Experience:
           Discrimination, Adjustment, and Coping
    • Abstract: Racial and ethnic minorities who experience perceived discrimination are likely to suffer from detrimental mental health consequences, including depression, anxiety, stress, and reduced self-esteem (Pascoe & Richman, 2009). Notably, for racial/ethnic minority college populations, experiences with hate crimes, discrimination, and racism are significant factors that tend to negatively impact academic, occupational, and long-term economic outcomes (Owens, Lacey, Rawls, & Holbert-Quince, 2010). The dropout rate of racial/ethnic minority students at US colleges is significantly higher than those of their White counterparts and is attributed, at least in part, to the impact of perceived discrimination (Bowman, Hurtado ... • The Positive Effects of Service-Learning on Transfer Students’ Sense of
           Belonging: A Multi-Institutional Analysis
    • Abstract: Of the 3.6 million students who enrolled in American postsecondary institutions for the first time in Fall 2008, 37.2% transferred at least once within 6 years of enrollment (Kena et al., 2015); however, too few of these students succeed at their new institutions. In a national study of more than 2.6 million students, Shapiro, Dundar, Wakhungu, Yuan, and Harrell (2015) found a striking difference in the 6-year persistence rates between students who did not transfer between institutions (42.1%) and students who did transfer (13.0%). Given the number of transfer students in the US, the 29.1% disparity in persistence rates means that thousands of transfer students never earn bachelor’s degrees. For decades ... Read More

  • Gender, Race, Finance, and Student Engagement in Cocurricular Activities
           in a South African University
    • Abstract: Postapartheid South African higher education student enrollments grew substantially from 425,000 in 1994 (Council on Higher Education [CHE], 2010) to 953,373 in 2012 (CHE, 2014). Yet, enrollment rates in tertiary education still remain significantly lower than desired (Mabokela & Mlambo, 2017). When categorized by race, enrollment in universities by White and Indian students is still much higher than for Black and Coloured students (Mabokela & Mlambo, 2017). In the South African context, the term Black refers to indigenous or native South Africans (Toni & Olivier, 2004), and the term Coloured, although a pejorative term in the United States, is not so in South Africa, as it is an official racial category referring ... • RU OK: Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Gatekeeper Training Program
    • Abstract: Mounting evidence supports the necessity to ensure the emotional well-being of the campus community. Findings from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey indicate that incoming first-year students’ self-rated emotional health has declined, with the lowest levels noted in 2014 and 2015 (Eagan, Stolzenberg, Bates, Aragon, Suchard, & Rios-Aguilar, 2016). The continuing downward trend is of concern, since suicide is the second leading cause of death among persons aged 15–34 years (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). The percentage of full-time college students aged 18–22 years who had serious thoughts of suicide increased from 6.6% to 8.0% between 2012 and 2013 (Substance ... Read More

  • “Keep Your Spirit Aligned”: A Case Study on Black Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Queer Students Defining and Practicing Spirituality
    • Abstract: Researchers have explored the juxtaposition of racial identity and spirituality and/or religious identity of Black collegians (Herndon, 2010; Stewart, 2009; K. L. Walker & Dixon, 2002). Though spirituality and religion are often (inter)connected, Hill and colleagues (2000) argued that religion is often associated with proscribing “a search for the sacred” or “search for non-sacred goals” (e.g., sense of belonging) that receives “validation and support from within an identifiable group of people” (e.g., a religious institution) and spirituality is about a search for the sacred that may or may not be proscribed by an organized entity (p. 66). Researchers have found that spirituality and religion are sources of ... Read More

  • Asexual Borderlands: Asexual Collegians’ Reflections on Inclusion
           Under the LGBTQ Umbrella
    • Abstract: Just a decade ago, asexuality was absent from the sexual orientation lexicon (Bigio, Davenport, Pinder, Chevigny, & Tucker, 2011). Today, visibility of asexual people continues to grow. For example, Asexuality Visibility and Education Network’s (AVEN, n.d.b) first Community Census in 2011 received 3,430 responses while responses to the 2014 census more than tripled to 10,880 respondents. Much of the research on asexuality (see Bogaert, 2012; Scherrer, 2008; Van Houdenhove, Gijs, T’Sjoen, & Enzlin, 2014) associates asexuality as part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community, aggregating asexuality with all other minoritized identities of sexuality and gender. MacInnis and Hodson (2012) ... Read More

  • Assessing Study Skills in College Students: A Review of Three Measures
    • Abstract: Interventions focused on bolstering college student study skills—that is, techniques and strategies necessary to prepare for and complete schoolwork and tests (Proctor, Prevatt, Adams, Reaser, & Petscher, 2006; Richardson, Robnolt, & Rhodes, 2010)—have been implemented in a variety of ways, including as part of summer bridge programs, supplemental courses, orientation programs, and targeted student support services (Wibrowski, Matthews, & Kitsantas, 2016). Such intervention programs commonly target time management, reading techniques, note-taking, study techniques, and test-taking strategies (Wernersbach, Crowley, Bates, & Rosenthal, 2014). Studies have demonstrated that academically struggling college students ... Read More

  • Entering the STEM Pipeline: Exploring the Impacts of a Summer Bridge
           Program on Students’ Readiness
    • Abstract: The high attrition rate of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors is a main concern in education (National Science Board, 2010). While educators have made great efforts to support students in the pursuit of STEM degrees (National Research Council, 2013), those from minoritized backgrounds (Harper, 2012) are at especially higher rates of leaving the STEM fields (Andersen & Ward, 2014; Good, Halpin, & Halpin, 2001). A number of factors may account for students’ departure, among which preparedness for STEM learning in college is a crucial determinant (Seymour & Hewitt, 1997). Extensive work has been done to enhance students’ preparedness through efforts such as bridge programs, where academic ... Read More

  • Black Men in the Academy: Narratives of Resiliency, Achievement, and
Success ed. by Brian L. McGowan, et al. (review)
    • Abstract: The coeditors are clear: this is a project of reclamation. They along with the contributing authors have reclaimed a space to illuminate the complex experiences of Black men in the academy, which essentially have led to various successful milestones such as identity development, degree attainment, and career advancement. They see this work as an extension of previous proof positive work of scholars such as Harper (2007, 2009, 2012), Harper and Davis (2012), Howard, Flennaugh, and Terry (2012), Terry and Howard (2013), and others who have worked to reframe the narratives surrounding Black boys and men in education—namely, narratives that suggest Black boys and men do not value education, come from communities and ... • Grateful Nation: Student Veterans and the Rise of the Military-Friendly
Campus by Ellen Moore, and: What’s Next for Student Veterans' Moving
From Transition to Academic Success ed. by David DiRamio (review)
    • Abstract: Early research on student veterans of the Global War on Terror consisted mostly of qualitative inquires exploring the nature of student veteran experiences, and in particular their transition to civilian student life. These early studies illuminated why educators and administrators needed to pay more attention to student veterans. David DiRamio’s edited book, What’s Next for Student Veterans', presents findings from a second wave of research about student veterans to better inform policy and decision makers. Ellen Moore’s Grateful Nation, also a second-wave inquiry, was writtento help people differentiate between support for veterans and support for the wars in which they fought. It challenges dualistic ... Read More
