  • Effects of Academic Mindsets on College Students’ Achievement and
           Retention
    • Abstract: College success is often determined by two types of indicators: academic performance (grade point average, credits earned during specific periods) and academic retention and graduation (Robbins et al., 2004). Academic success and degree attainment of postsecondary students remain a major concern with dropout rates of up to 45% and the average time to attain a bachelor’s degree over 6 years (Barefoot, 2004). Data from the National Center for Education Statistics indicate that in 2015 only 59% of the students who entered 4-year colleges and universities graduated within 6 years and over 21% of those students left after their first year (Kena et al., 2015). What variables are important to predicting ... Read More

  • Queering Black Racial Identity Development
    • Abstract: Current theories of college students’ racial identity development are limited and incomplete, as new formulations of theory have identified possibilities for more inclusive, flexible interpretations of how identity forms and who is included within categorical structures that these theories espouse. These theories are often stage-like with students progressing in a linear manner. In both Cross’s (1971) and Jackson’s (1976) models of Black identity development, Black students enter and exit the various stages in a direct progression (J. M. Sullivan & Esmail, 2012; Wijeyesinghe & Jackson, 2012). Thus, there is limited complexity in understanding the nuances of how students develop their racial identities in ... Read More

  • Queering la Familia: A Phenomenological Study Reconceptualizing Familial
           Capital for Queer Latino Men
    • Abstract: Despite the proliferation of empirical studies on LGBQ students in higher education, there is a dearth of research that focuses on the experiences of college students who identify as both queer and people of color (Renn, 2010). Researchers have begun to explore the intersections of race and sexuality over the past decade with notable studies focusing on Latino/a (Peña-Talamantes, 2013), Black (Strayhorn, Blakewood, & DeVita, 2008), as well as Asian American and Pacific Islander college students (Narui, 2014). The extant literature focuses primarily on the ways queer students of color experience intensified marginalization and harassment due to their multiple oppressed identities (Misawa, 2010). Furthermore ... Read More

  • Promoting First-Generation College Students’ Mental Well-Being: Student
Perceptions of an Academic Enrichment Program
    • Abstract: The transition from high school to college constitutes a developmental milestone in the lives of students (Wang, 2014b). During this period students become more independent (Padgett, Johnson, & Pascarella, 2012; Reid & Moore, 2008), gain exposure to people and environments that differ from those of their families of origin (Stebleton, Soria, & Huesman, 2014), and begin to navigate new relationships and societal expectations (Jenkins, Belanger, Londono Connally, Boals, & Duron, 2013; Wang, 2014b). For most students entering college, embarking on this new chapter is a time of great stress; however, first-generation students experience these stressors very differently than their continuing-generation peers ... • Trajectories of Student Leadership Development Through Training: An
Analysis by Gender, Race, and Prior Exposure
    • Abstract: University students face unprecedented pressure to graduate ready to confront an employment and management environment churned by consistent advances in globalization, technology, and diversity in the workforce (Altbach, 2013). In response, postsecondary education accrediting agencies, especially in technical disciplines, have responded by adding “soft skills” such as communication, leadership, and team management within their criteria for a quality education (Colbeck, Campbell, & Bjorklund, 2000; Smith, Sheppard, Johnson, & Johnson, 2005). The largest employers of university graduates list “leadership,” “problem-solving skills,” and “ability to work in a team” as skills to develop in college more necessary ... Read More

  • “Setting Up for the Next Big Thing”: Undergraduate Women Engineering
           Students’ Postbaccalaureate Career Decisions
    • Abstract: Increasing the representation of women in engineering is a critical goal in the United States, not only to retain economic vitality and leadership in global innovation, but also to increase overall career opportunity, economic success, and gender equity for women (Office of Science and Technology Policy, 2016; Sargent, 2014). Despite the attention to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education across the United States, women remain vastly underrepresented in these fields, especially in engineering (Corbett & Hill, 2015; National Center for Education Statistics, 2015). In 2012, women composed just 19% of engineering college students and 15% of the engineering workforce (Chen & Weko, 2009; ... Read More

  • Depressive Symptomatology and Academic Achievement Among First-Year
College Students: The Role of Effort Regulation
    • Abstract: The prevalence of depression among college students has become a growing concern in recent years. In a 2015 national college health assessment of 22,931 undergraduate students, 9.3% of male students and 17.0% of female students reported receiving or being treated for depression within the previous 12 months (American College Health Association, 2016). In addition, 13.0% of male students and 15.0% of female students reported feeling so depressed within the prior 12 months that it was difficult to function. In another survey of more than 150,000 first-year students attending 4-year institutions in the United States, incoming college students reported the worst emotional health since the survey began being ... • College Students’ Social Goals and Psychological Adjustment:
           Mediation via Emotion Regulation
    • Abstract: University life can be stressful and overwhelming as students juggle school, work, friends, and family (Wintre & Yaffe, 2000). Stress levels may be even higher if a student attends a highly selective residential university with rigorous curricula, intense competition among students, and high performance standards. Students face new challenges, for example, adapting to living away from home and learning to share living space with other students. Reflecting such challenges, previous studies have reported a concerning trend found all over the world of change in university freshmen’s physical and mental health, especially instances of depression and anxiety (Bayram & Bilgel, 2008; Kessler & Walters, 1998; ... • Psychometric Evaluation of the Work Acceptance and Action Questionnaire of
Psychological Flexibility Modified for University Students
    • Abstract: According to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychological flexibility refers to an individual’s ability to maintain mindful awareness of his or her thoughts and emotions in the present moment while behaving according to his or her personal values (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 2012). Psychological inflexibility could set the foundation for emotional distress and impair psychosocial and academic functioning. The concept of psychological flexibility applies both to college students with diagnosable mental illnesses and to those experiencing normative stressors such as adjustment to college (Hayes, Pistorello, & Levin, 2012). Although there is no standard threshold for defining low, moderate, or high ... Read More

  • Moderating Influences of Student–Faculty Interactions on Students’
           Graduate and Professional School Aspirations
    • Abstract: There is an inverse relationship between lifetime unemployment rates and attainment of advanced college degrees, as well as a positive relationship between levels of human capital and graduate degree attainment (Carnevale, Cheah, & Strohl, 2012). This suggests that there is a need to better understand college experiences that may promote students’ interests in pursuing graduate or professional education. Interactions with faculty members in college influence a host of college outcomes (Kim & Sax, 2017; Mayhew, Rockenbach, Bowman, Seifert, & Wolniak, 2016; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005), but less is known about whether these interactions influence students’ aspirations to attend graduate or professional school ... • Validation of the Community College Survey of Men: An Overview of the
Intrapersonal Factors in the Noncognitive Domain
    • Abstract: Postsecondary scholars have sought to illuminate the experiences, perceptions, and outcomes of men of color (particularly Black men) in 4-year colleges and universities (Bonner, 2010; Cuyjet, 2006; Dancy, 2012; Davis, 1994; Flowers, 2002; Harper, 2010, 2012). In recent years, scholars have focused intently on improving success rates for men of color (notably Black, Latino, Native American, and Southeast Asian men) in community colleges (e.g., Bonner, 2014; Bush & Bush, 2010; Palmer & Dubord, 2013; Sáenz, Bukoski, Lui, & Rodriguez, 2013; Vasquez Urias, 2012). Currently, only 12.0% of Black, 14.9% of Latino, and 15.2% of Native American men, compared to 22.1% of White and 25.1% of Asian men, graduate from a ... Read More

  • Measure of Development for Student Conduct Administration
    • Abstract: Student Conduct Administration (SCA) is one of many names for the processes and procedures through which colleges and universities manage student behavior. Other common references include codes of conduct, honor codes, judicial systems, and judicial services (Pavela, 2005; Stoner, 2008). Staff who administer SCA processes have a dynamic set of responsibilities. Among those responsibilities, administrators believe, is to provide for students a developmental experience. Despite the accessibility of quasi-experimental design (QED) in the study of education (Schlotter, Schwerdt, & Woessman, 2011), the existing scholarship has yet to generate strong empirical evidence that SCA processes help students ... • Improving Quality in American Higher Education: Learning Outcomes and
Assessments for the 21st Century by Jillian Kinzie (review)
    • Abstract: Quality in the undergraduate experience is a chief concern of 21st-century higher education. Federal and state policymakers, employers, parents, and the public have all complained that college is not worth the price and worse, that students are ill-prepared for the world of work upon graduation. These critiques, along with data showing lagging completion rates, have helped usher in expanded institutional assessment projects, greater accountability for student outcomes, the adoption of performance indicator systems, and a range of educational improvement initiatives (Kuh et al., 2015). Learning outcomes have recently become the center of the debate. Amid the public conversation about the cost ... Read More
