  • We Are (Not) All Bulldogs: Minoritized Peer Socialization Agents’
           Meaning-Making About Collegiate Contexts
    • Abstract: Collegiate socialization initiatives such as campus tours, orientation, and fall welcome—processes through which “normative influences can be transmitted to students” (Weidman, 1989, p. 300)—attempt to foster prospective and new students’ sense of belonging while educating students about the institution’s culture. These socialization outcomes are connected to enrollment and retention (Capps & Miller, 2006; Mullendore & Banahan, 2005; Rode, 2000). As such, socialization programs serve as the starting point for institutions to enact their espoused goals for diversity and inclusion (Ibarra, 2001) and retention-to-graduation (Renn & Reason, 2013). Undergraduate socialization initiatives serve as a ... Read More

  • Encouraged or Weeded Out: Perspectives of Students of Color in the STEM
           Disciplines on Faculty Interactions
    • Abstract: Students’ interactions with faculty have been demonstrated as being important in helping students through their undergraduate programs (Crisp & Cruz, 2009; Komarraju, Musulkin, & Bhattacharya, 2010; Merriweather & Morgan, 2013). Student–faculty interactions become even more crucial as students aspire toward and enroll in graduate programs, for which faculty serve as role models, guide them through programs, and often offer research or career support (Gardner, 2007; Herzig, 2006; Merriweather & Morgan, 2013). For Students of Color, interactions with faculty may be vital to their ability to navigate educational systems that historically have excluded them (Herzig, 2006; McCoy, Winkle-Wagner, & Luedke, 2015). ... • Empathy and Extracurricular Involvement in Emerging Adulthood: Findings
from a Longitudinal Study of Undergraduate College Males
    • Abstract: Empathy is a foundational construct for emerging adults entering college as it is associated with numerous prosocial outcomes and is a quality sought after by diverse employers. Although, according to a recent meta-analysis, empathy has declined among American college students in recent decades, changes in empathy among individuals over the full course of the college years has not yet been studied. We sought to examine changes in empathy among college students in emerging adulthood, and to determine if extracurricular involvement significantly predicted changes in empathy during the college years. In the following literature review we will explore the theoretical basis for the importance of empathy during ... Read More

  • Examining Developmental Readiness in an International Service-Learning
           Context
    • Abstract: To prepare college students to meet the complex demands of today’s globalized world, higher education institutions seek to help students develop equally complex competencies such as thinking critically and creatively about real-world problems, interacting effectively with intercultural communities, and acting ethically to uphold one’s personal and social commitments (aAssociation of American Colleges & Universities [AAC&U], 2016a). Developing these competencies requires students to be ready to not only add to what they know but also transform how they know (Baxter Magolda & King, 2012). For example, students must be ready to shift from viewing their own culture as right and other cultures as wrong to ... Read More

  • Sexual Perceptions Versus Reality in Undergraduates: Data-Driven Praxis
           for Sex-Related Campus Programming
    • Abstract: Sexual development is an important aspect of overall development and one that has been identified to continuously evolve over the life span (Tolman & Diamond, 2014). The college years, however, provide a unique opportunity for students to explore their sexuality and sexual development. From Animal House to Van Wilder, popular culture portrays the college experience as a reckless, no-rules free-for-all. Despite Hollywood’s extensive creative license, college often presents emerging adults with more freedom and less adult supervision than ever before. In terms of sexuality, students also have greater access to a new and larger pool of potential partners and live immersed in a culture seemingly accepting of ... Read More

  • A Post-Intentional Exploration of Agnostic College Students’
           Experiences
    • Abstract: First-year students are entering colleges and universities with no religious affiliation more so now than ever before. The number of students who selected none as their religious preference increased by 23 percentage points between 1966 (6.6%) and 2015 (29.6%; Eagan et al., 2016). More specifically, researchers at Harvard University found a shift in the majority of their first-year population who identified as atheist and agnostic. (In this article, agnostic and atheist are used as common nouns and lowercased accordingly.) Responses from the class of 2019 indicated that 38% identified as agnostic or atheist, while 34% identified as Catholic or Protestant (Winsor, 2015); still, by only providing a none option ... • “How Do I Quantify This'”: Students Reflect on Survey Items
Related to Diversity and Cross-Racial Interaction
    • Abstract: Higher education researchers have used survey data to answer questions on the campus racial climate for over 30 years. Since the origination of such questions on surveys run by the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute, researchers leading other key studies such as the Michigan Student Survey, National Survey of Student Engagement, and National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen have incorporated questions related to cross-racial interaction, engagement with diversity activities, interracial friendship, and openness to diversity. Such surveys provide institutions with valuable information for campus assessment efforts gauging climate and inclusion. National data sets further allow researchers to capture the ... Read More

  • The Implications of University Outcome Expectations for Student Adjustment
    • Abstract: Outcome expectations in regards to the benefits of attending university or college are considered to be students’ main consideration for entering higher education (Lee & Park, 2011). Outcome expectations refers to beliefs about the anticipated consequences of a particular course of action (e.g., If I do this, what will happen'; Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994, p. 83). According to Bandura’s (1986) social cognitive theory (SCT), outcome expectations can be physical (e.g., financial gains), social (e.g., respect from others), and self-evaluative (e.g., self-satisfaction), and may relate to specific life contexts (Lent, 2004) such as academic domains (e.g., If I get good grades, I will be able to have the career ... • Unwanted Sexual Contact: Students With Autism and Other Disabilities at
           Greater Risk
    • Abstract: Ten percent of college students identify as having a disability (Snyder & Dillow, 2011), and a subsample of this population, students with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), are increasingly participating in higher education (Geller & Greenberg, 2010). Disability resource offices at doctoral-granting institutions serve an average of 8.6 students with ASD per semester (Kasnitz, 2011), whereas these offices at 2-year colleges serve an average of 16.4 students with ASD per semester (Brown & Coomes, 2015). Furthermore, the participation of students with ASD in postsecondary education is expected to increase as one in 68 individuals is diagnosed with ASD (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). ... • Social Belonging and College Retention: Results From a Quasi-Experimental
           Pilot Study
    • Abstract: Educators, policymakers, and institutions have worked for decades to increase rates of college graduation, but about half of students who enter college drop out without completing a bachelor’s degree (National Student Clearinghouse, 2014). Although the rate of student attrition is higher in the United States than in any other industrialized nation (Harvard Graduate School of Education, 2011), about 30% of U.S. students will drop out during their first year of college (Schneider, 2010). Persistence and retention point to an array of negative individual-level consequences that can have implications for society in general. Higher education persistence and retention programs seek to avoid the negative ... Read More

  • Black, White, and Biracial Students’ Engagement at Differing
           Institutional Types
    • Abstract: Student engagement is “characterized as participation in educationally effective practices, both inside and outside the classroom, which leads to a range of measurable outcomes” (Harper & Quaye, 2015, p. 2), such as college persistence (Astin, 1993; Kuh, Cruce, Shoup, Kinzie, & Gonyea, 2008; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Stage & Hossler, 2000). Engagement involves both the time and effort students put into educationally effective practices, as well as the time and effort institutions put into engaging students (Kuh, 2001; Kuh, Kinzie, Buckley, Bridges, & Hayek, 2007; Wolf-Wendel, Ward, & Kinzie, 2009). Student engagement, however, is not a monolithic phenomenon; therefore, researchers have begun to explore ... Read More

  • Assessment in Student Affairs by John H. Schuh, J. Patrick Biddix, Laura
           A. Dean, and Jillian Kinzie (review)
    • Abstract: A growing body of assessment resources has emerged as foundational levels of assessment proficiency have become less an aspiration and more an expectation for student affairs professionals at all levels. Assessment is integral to the ways units and programs function, evaluate their relative effectiveness, negotiate for resources or staff, and contribute to accreditation processes and related institutional reports. More divisions have hired directors of assessment who work closely with institutional research and planning offices, units within the student affairs division, and student affairs professionals at all levels. Consequently, study of assessment design and execution is an even more critical element of ... Read More

  • Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach by Nancy J.
Evans, Ellen M. Broido, Kirsten R. Brown, and Autumn K. Wilke (review)
    • Abstract: In Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach, Evans, Broido, Brown, and Wilke did an outstanding job creating a resource for disability scholars, faculty, and practitioners and a textbook for disability education courses within higher education administration, student affairs, disability studies, and human services programs among others. This comprehensive book provides a view of disability in higher education through a social justice lens from its roots to today’s college campus experience—traditional, virtual, and global. Using the social justice lens is one of the main contributions this book makes to the topic of disability in higher education. In doing so, the authors address the power ... Read More
