  • Problematizing Community: A Network Approach to Conceptualizing Campus
           Communities
    • Abstract: Community is a central value of student affairs (Lloyd-Jones, 1989) as well as a key mechanism associated with a range of desirable student and institutional goals. Although defined in a variety of technical ways in the academic literature, the concept of community depends on how interrelationships among group members produce shared meanings that effect social action. All college-level learning occurs within a community, whether it is a group of students seated in a lecture hall, a highly structured living-learning program, participants in a web-based course, or student cocurricular engagement. Interrelationships occur that may, or may not, foster positive academic outcomes.Despite community's prominence in ... Read More

  • "When You Don't Really Focus on It": Campus Climate for Social Class
           Diversity and Identity Awareness
    • Abstract: Scholars have well documented the social class divide in the United States, especially in education (Carnevale & Rose, 2003; McDonough, 1997; Park & Eagan, 2011; Putnam, 2016). Class divides in education start early (Lareau, 2011; Putnam, 2016) and continue throughout the educational pipeline (McDonough, 1997; Park & Eagan, 2011) and beyond (Walpole, 2003, 2008). Evidence reveals marked challenges of being a low-income student in higher education (Aries, 2008; Aries & Seider, 2005; Armstrong & Hamilton, 2015; Martin, 2015a, 2015b; Ostrove, 2003; Ostrove & Long, 2007; Schwartz, Donovan, & Guido-DiBrito, 2009; Steinmetz, 2008; Stephens, Hamedani, & Destin, 2014; Walpole 2003, 2008). At the same time, even ... Read More

  • Supervised Practice Experiences and Professional Preparation of Graduates
           from Student Affairs Master's Programs
    • Abstract: From the earliest days of professional practice the principle of supervised practice—or learning by doing—has been widely used in professional education (D. L. Cooper et al., 2002; Janosik, Cooper, Saunders, & Hirt, 2014). Later, when the practice found a place in the curriculum of higher education it became known as an internship or practicum. Hands-on supervised training has been a historical component of preparation for a variety of professions, including student affairs in higher education. The first master's degree in student affairs, granted in 1914 at Teachers College, Columbia University, required a "practicum in which concrete problems confronted by the dean of women were discussed" (Lloyd-Jones, 1949, p. ... • Food Insecurity and Academic Achievement Among College Students at a
Public University in the United States
    • Abstract: The purpose of this study was to estimate correlates of food insecurity among college students at a public university in the Western United States and to assess the association between food insecurity and academic achievement. In addition, this study gauged the extent to which food insecurity accounted for the associations between students' academic performance, their racial/ethnic identity, and their socioeconomic status (i.e., income and parents' educational background).Food insecurity, or lack of consistent access to affordable, nutritious, and adequate food (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA], Coleman-Jensen, Gregory, & Rabbitt, 2017), is a serious public health problem (Pereira & Hodge, 2015) affecting ... • "They Don't Even Know that We Exist": Exploring Sense of Belonging Within
Sorority and Fraternity Communities for Latina/o Members
    • Abstract: Studies have pointed to the positive role that campus subcultures, such as racial/ethnic–based student organizations, may play in Latinx/a/o college students' sense of belonging (Garcia, 2017; Gonzalez, 2002; Museus & Quaye, 2009). Note that the term Latinx/a/o(s) is used here as a gender-inclusive term to refer to members of the Latino/Hispanic community, while Latina/o is used in reference to the women and men that participated in this study. I also use Latinx/a/o in reference to sororities and fraternities, though I recognize these organizations have largely excluded individuals who do not identify as women or men. Latinx/a/o sororities and fraternities are student organizations that serve a dual role as ... Read More

  • Emotionalized Learning Experiences: Inspiring Students in Pakistan to
Reinvent Themselves to Nurture Social Competence
    • Abstract: In a developing economy like Pakistan, even the graduates with a good academic record are ill-equipped for the highly competitive job market, as they lack social engineering skills and fail to demonstrate positive behavioral attitudes (S. Ahmed, 2012; Mirza, Jaffri, & Hashmi, 2014; Shahbaz, 2016). They may be cognitively smart, but deficient in affective skills (Dar, 2015); for example, they may be outstanding at what they do, but possess less than desirable conduct and personal values (Kuboja & Ngussa, 2015). Therefore, educational institutions in Pakistan may need to focus on developing more socially competent students.A predominant objective of higher education systems in the affluent nations is the development ... • The Will and the Way' Associations Between Purpose and Grit Among
           Students in Three US Universities
    • Abstract: Purpose is defined as a longstanding aim that is personally meaningful but also involves a desire to contribute to the world beyond the self (Damon, Menon, & Bronk, 2003). Research suggests that purpose is a key developmental task (Bronk, Hill, Lapsley, Talib, & Finch, 2009; Damon, 2009) as well as a major contributor to thriving (Damon et al., 2003; Bundick, Yeager, King, & Damon, 2010). Purpose is associated with positive outcomes including achievement, hope, life satisfaction, gratitude, compassion, and identity development (Bronk et al., 2009; Bronk, 2011; Damon et al., 2003; Malin, Liauw, & Damon, 2017). Adolescence and young adulthood represent critical periods in purpose cultivation (Damon, 2009).Along with ... Read More

  • In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development by
           Carol Gilligan (review)
    • Abstract: The enduring influence of Carol Gilligan's In a Different Voice is best understood by stepping back in time and understanding the challenges she faced. At the time of publication, 1982, human development was viewed through men's development and she challenged this norm. Though Jane Loevinger (1976) included women in her ego development research, she did not critique previous research for privileging men. In this book, Gilligan used three studies to examine how people develop relationships and reflect on their lives and connections to consider how they see the world and develop their senses of self. Through the synthesis of these three studies, she created a critical analysis about existing developmental theories ... Read More

  • Undocumented and in College: Students and Institutions in a Climate of
National Hostility ed. by Terry-Ann Jones and Laura Nichols (review)
    • Abstract: The issue of immigration in the United States has been brought to the forefront of national discourse yet again. At the time of this writing, reports of large groups of migrants caravanning to the US–Mexico border to seek asylum in the US have dominated the news headlines. While much of the present rhetoric has centered on restricting immigration, the continued unresolved issues with the US immigration system leaves many undocumented immigrants in a precarious position, including their children. These children (through no choice of their own) were brought to the US, grew up here, attended K–12 education, and upon legally arriving at adulthood find themselves without the privileges many of their peers take for ... • Student Affairs by the Numbers: Quantitative Research and Statistics for
           Professionals by Rishi Sriram (review)
    • Abstract: At a time when data and accountability measures are becoming increasingly prevalent in student affairs, quantitative literacy is an essential tool for analyzing and improving student support structures and experiences. Too often, however, the necessary skills for quantitative research and analysis are buried in inaccessible statistics textbooks filled with arcane mathematical models and examples that do not connect to higher education and the work of student affairs. Rishi Sriram's new book, Student Affairs by the Numbers, does away with the language and mathematics that shroud statistics in an incomprehensible fog, and he provides the building blocks for student affairs professionals to develop their own ... • Effects of Undergraduates' Academic Self-Efficacy on Their Academic
Help-Seeking Behaviors: The Mediating Effect of Professional Commitment
and the Moderating Effect of Gender
    • Abstract: When learners perceive they cannot master what they are trying to learn, they should seek assistance from others who can help them; however, an increasing number of undergraduates are unable to seek help effectively (Kun, Jyh, & Chin, 2013). This is a burning issue because academic help-seeking behaviors are defined as proactive and mastery-oriented learning behaviors that play a crucial role in the long-term complex process of academic learning (Ryan, Pintrich, & Midgley, 2001). Various factors influence how individuals ask for help when they experience difficulty learning, including self-efficacy and negative affect (Meera & Dustin, 2013). Some research suggests that academic help-seeking behaviors take two main ... Read More
