  • The State of LGBT and Queer Research in Higher Education Revisited:
Current Academic Houses and Future Possibilities
    • Abstract: Bans instituted and overturned. Equality achieved and in danger. Tipping points and record-breaking violence. Visibility and erasure. These concepts, words, and phrases all resonate with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in their public and private lives. In the past decade, in the US and beyond, marriage within a framework of monogamy has become more accessible for those who are a part of LGBTQ communities. Pop culture has continued to take up, appropriate, and profit from phrases and concepts like “shade” and “spilling tea,” which emerged from poor and working-class Black queer, trans, and gender-nonconforming communities (Livingston, 1989). Ironically, visibility on screen and in ... Read More

  • “The Whole Weight of the World on My Shoulders”: Power,
           Identity, and Student Activism
    • Abstract: The failure of institutional leaders to respond to and disrupt racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and the intersections of multiple forms of oppression on campus often compels students with minoritized identities to engage in activism and resistance. These students may not identify with the term activist (Linder & Rodriguez, 2012) and rarely receive formal support from administrators for their activism (Linder, 2019). Some university administrators view student activists or students who attempt to interrupt traditional power structures as “troublemakers” rather than engaged students (Spade, 2017, para. 13). As a result, some college and university educators miss opportunities to improve campus ... Read More

  • Do Working Students Buy Into HIPs' Working for Pay and Participation
           in High-Impact Practices
    • Abstract: As government subsidies per student have decreased, the cost of postsecondary education has been transferred to the consumer (Toutkoushian & Paulsen, 2016). According to the U.S. Department of Education, for 2011–12, the average educational debt among student borrowers aged 18 to 24 attending 4 or more years of postsecondary education was $26,600 (McFarland et al., 2017). To offset unmet financial need or to reduce borrowing, many students work while enrolled in college; however, students who work may have less time to invest in their studies, restricting their ability to participate in curricular opportunities intended to enhance the educational experience. It is not uncommon for undergraduates to work while ... • White Privilege Awareness and Openness to Diversity: The Moderating Role
of Gender for White, Christian Students
    • Abstract: A mission of many colleges and universities is to promote openness to diversity as an educational goal to prepare students to participate in a democratic multicultural society (Denson & Bowman, 2013; Gurin, Dey, Hurtado, & Gurin, 2002); and because openness to diversity and campus diversity engagement are associated with positive educational outcomes (e.g., Bowman, 2009, 2010, 2014; Gurin et al., 2002; Kilgo, Sheets, & Pascarella, 2015; Pascarella, Edison, Nora, Hagedorn, & Terenzini, 1996; Whitt, Edison, Pascarella, Terenzini, & Nora, 2001). In this research, openness to diversity is generally defined as awareness or appreciation of differences, whether in regard to race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual ... Read More

  • Preparing Youth in Foster Care for College Through an Early Outreach
           Program
    • Abstract: Foster youth are among some of the nation’s most underserved students in higher education. Of the more than 430,000 youth in the foster care system, only about 50% will graduate from high school and as little as 3% will ever earn a bachelor’s degree (Pecora, 2012; Wolanin, 2005). These trends are even more troubling when you consider that over 70% of all foster youth aspire to attend college (Kirk & Day, 2011; Tzawa-Hayden, 2004). A burgeoning line of research on foster youth offers insights about the complex web of personal and educational challenges that significantly limit their college-going rates. For instance, researchers have documented the challenges foster youth experience, such as: difficulties satisfying ... Read More

  • Early Identification of Students’ Social Networks: Predicting College
Retention and Graduation via Campus Dining
    • Abstract: Colleges and universities have long sought to improve their students’ adjustment, retention, and likelihood of graduation (Berger, Ramírez, & Lyons, 2012). To help with this goal, institutions have increasingly attempted to identify students who are struggling early in college so that they can provide timely support and assistance. These early efforts can include a variety of institutional assessments or commercial tools. Some research has shown that social adjustment and engagement measures gathered approximately 1 month into the first semester can predict short-term college retention (Bowman, Miller, Woosley, Maxwell, & Kolze, 2019; Sun, Hagedorn, & Zhang, 2016). These results support the potential importance of ... Read More

  • A Look Back at Influential Books in Student Development
    • Abstract: As I was pulling my thoughts together for this review I was grading the second set of final papers for the initial theory course in our graduate program. This first-of-two theory course is focused on constructivist-developmental theories. I’ve taught our second theory course, grounded in identities and critical theories, for 22 years and I found myself surprised at how many students used Chickering and Reisser’s (1993) theoretical concepts to make meaning of their own lived experiences. I was surprised because my critical theory focus from studying emergent identity theories rooted in oppression and the politics of power moved me to sideline most early developmental theories. Ironically, my critical epistemological ... Read More

  • Building Transfer Student Pathways for College and Career Success ed. by
Mark Allen Poisel and Sonya Joseph (review)
    • Abstract: Building Transfer Pathways for College and Career Success is the result of a sponsorship collaboration between the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS). Editors Mark Allen Poisel (Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock) and Sonya Joseph (Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs at Valencia Community College) are experts on student transfer, each with decades of experience cultivating transfer-receptive institutions. Their original exploration of this topic, Transfer Students in Higher Education: Building Foundations for Policies, Programs, and Services That Foster Student Success ... Read More

  • “Whispers and Concerns About the Lawyers Taking Over”: How Student
Affairs Professionals Think About the Growing Need for Legal Education
    • Abstract: Decisions in student affairs often require the integration of multiple knowledge bases (O’Brien, 2018). Although learning and development have historically been core values of the profession (Evans & Reason, 2001), legal demands on student affairs professionals have grown with increasing responsibility for compliance in areas like Title IX and campus speech policies (Kaplin & Lee, 2014; Lake, 2011). While guidelines for relevant legal training exist (American College Personnel Association & National Association of Student Personnel Administrators [ACPA & NASPA], 2015), student affairs professionals come from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds (Wesaw & Sponsler, 2014). Using a focused reanalysis ... Read More

  • Cross-Socioeconomic Class Friendships Can Exacerbate Imposturous Feelings
           Among Lower-SES Students
    • Abstract: One need not travel far on a university campus before finding a student who is feeling like a fraud who does not belong in the academic setting. The impostor phenomenon—the psychological experience of failing to internalize one’s successes, having a distorted sense of one’s capabilities, and having strong feelings of self-doubt and fraudulence when faced with novel tasks (Clance & Imes, 1978)—is rampant in higher education settings (Parkman, 2016). Counterintuitively, this is typically experienced by students who are not impostors at all, but are highly competent students among the brightest in their peer group (O’Brien McElwee & Yurak, 2010). Imposturous feelings can undermine academic success as they have been ... Read More

  • Exploring Predictors of Sense of Belonging in Trinidad and Tobago
    • Abstract: Research in the United States has consistently highlighted the importance of students’ sense of belonging—or feeling of being connected and supported—to their success in postsecondary education (e.g., Hausmann, Ye, Schofield, & Woods, 2009; O’Keeffe, 2013; Strayhorn, 2012; Thomas, 2012). As Strayhorn (2012) argued, sense of belonging is a critical aspect of students’ postsecondary experience and is associated with academic success. Research from the United States has provided ample evidence of some of the ways in which educators can foster students’ sense of belonging, including encouraging students’ relationships with faculty and peers and providing opportunities for cocurricular engagement (Hausmann et al., 2009; ... • Applying Student Development Theories Holistically: Exemplar Programming
           in Higher Education ed. by K. Branch, J. S. Hart-Steffes, and C. M. Wilson
           (review)
    • Abstract: Many faculty members who teach in gradate preparation programs in student affairs and higher education have long sought a book that explores the connections between student development theory and practice. Branch, Hart-Steffes, and Wilson’s new book, Applying Student Development Theories Holistically: Exemplar Programming in Higher Education, appears to meet that need. The book includes 11 chapters authored by 28 writers (inclusive of the editors) who primarily serve as practitioners in student affairs administration. The book includes a thought-provoking Foreword contributed by Susan Komives who discusses college outcomes, high-impact educational practices, and student development theories in practice. Contents of ... Read More
