  • Introduction
    • Abstract: This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of a number of milestones in the histories of both queer thought and digital technology: Judith Butler published Gender Trouble, ARPANET was decommissioned, Paris Is Burning premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Alan Emtage wrote the implementation for Archie—widely considered to be the first search engine. This special issue thinks through the intersection of queerness and the digital. In "Queer OS," Kara Keeling argues for scholarship that takes "historical, sociocultural, conceptual phenomena that currently shape our realities in deep and profound ways, such as race, gender, class, citizenship, and ability (to name those among the most active in the ... • Absence, Disappearance, and Obfuscation: Contouring the US Anime Market
through the Nonpresences in Crunchyroll's Yaoi Catalog
    • Abstract: In october 2018, crunchyroll, a us-based video streaming service that focuses on anime, announced that it has over two million paid subscribers globally, in addition to its forty million registered (but nonpaying) users.1 More impressive, Crunchyroll has doubled its paying user base in less than two years, since it reportedly aggregated more than one million paid subscribers in February 2017.2 In truth, Crunchyroll's revenue numbers pale in comparison to those of streaming giants such as Netflix, which boasts over sixty million subscribers in the United States alone as of April 2019.3 But for a video streaming service that focuses solely on a niche medium, this is a significant achievement that indicates the ... • Nelson Sullivan's Video Memories: YouTube Nostalgia and the Queer Archive
           Effect
    • Abstract: On april 17, 2011, rupaul andre charles, drag queen and host of the reality television program RuPaul's Drag Race, tweeted about a 1980s videographer named Nelson Sullivan, one of the first gay mentors who showed him the ropes when they were roommates in New York City in the mid-1980s.1 In 2018, a young drag queen named Desmond Is Amazing posed in front of the entrance to Nelson Sullivan's former townhouse at 5 Ninth Avenue in New York City in an Instagram post captioned, "I was shook to the shookest degree to visit the former home of Nelson Sullivan, one of my heroes, today."2 In early 2019, the drag queen Sharon Needles, winner of the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, eulogized Nelson Sullivan's home video ... • The Queer Public and its Problem with Representation
    • Abstract: To invoke the term "queer" is to invoke an existential crisis: Does it mean anything, everything, or nothing at all' I ask this not as a critic but rather as an acolyte of queer theory—but one who still can't quite put together what most people mean when they refer to themselves, objects, communities, or culture as being "queer." Most attempts to clarify queer's meaning only exacerbate my confusion. Take, for example, this popular definition provided by Seventeen magazine: "For activist and performer Leah Juliett, a big part of being queer is ~not~ having a hard definition. 'I can exist in the gray areas,' they said. 'I can be undefined, and that is okay.'"1 Setting aside the normative claims in Juliett's ... Read More

  • Toward a Filipinx Method: Queer of Color Critique and QTGNC Mobilization
           in Mark Aguhar's Poetics
    • Abstract: On april 14, 2011, the tumblr user markaguhar posted a text painting to her online portfolio on the Tumblr blog Mark Aguhar (see fig. 1). Rendered in purple and pink gouache, glitter, and Arches paper, the words "I'd rather be beautiful than male" sparkled on computer screens.1 While the original post only has 263 likes and reblogs, the work of the transfeminine, Filipinx American, multidisciplinary artist Mark Aguhar (also known by the Tumblr username calloutqueen) continues to be circulated and celebrated amidst our protracted movement for queer, trans, and gender nonconforming (QTGNC) justice.2 Although Aguhar was known for her blunt and flippant microblogs that called out racism, fatphobia, misogyny, and ... • Queerness in the Digital Age: A Scholarly Roundtable
    • Abstract: For this issue on queerness in the digital age, the velvet light trap gathered a diverse group of scholars with a range of specialties related to queer theory and media. The conversation that follows touches on everything from dating apps to the films of John Waters to a livestreamed Indigo Girls concert, demonstrating the myriad ways digitality has affected queer media, representation, and audiences. Apropos of an issue concerned with digital spaces, this roundtable took place via email. The editors began this roundtable on March 9, 2020, only for closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic to begin in earnest a few days later. Thus, the participants' contributions began to reflect this fraught period toward the end of ... Read More

Lives Matter by Charlton D. McIlwain, and: Distributed Blackness: African
American Cybercultures by André Brock Jr. (review)
    • Abstract: In black software: the internet and racial justice, from the afronet to Black Lives Matter, Charlton McIlwain links the parallel yet often perpendicular histories of the computing industry and Black social and cultural movements in the United States. André Brock's Distributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures examines how Blackness is operationalized discursively, rhetorically, and digitally in the creation of Black cyberculture. These books consider the relationships among Black people, computing technology, and digital practice through a historicized reframing of Black political movements and innovative theorizations across Black critical theory through the lived experiences of Black people. The ... Read More

  • Algorithms Of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism by Safiya
Umoja Noble, and: Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New
Jim Code by Ruha Benjamin (review)
    • Abstract: Against a backdrop of rapid technological advancements and expanded attention to the relationship among algorithmic data, its utilization, and societal structures, discourse about how the roles and responsibilities of big tech companies relate to the data they acquire, as well as to contemporary social justice efforts, increasingly takes center stage. The neoliberal structures that undergird much of contemporary America (visible through assessment of systems that reinforce conceptions of individual, commodifiable success as somehow contributing to collective efforts toward advancements for marginalized populations) are being baked into algorithmic design by rapidly growing tech companies, which provides those ... • Queerbaiting and Fandom: Teasing Fans through Homoerotic Possibilities ed.
           by Joseph Brennan (review)
    • Abstract: The edited collection queerbaiting and Fandom: Teasing Fans through Homoerotic Possibilities provides timely and incisive perspectives on a central node of contemporary queer, fan media criticism. From the editor's dedication to his husband ("we're canon, baby") to the last short "thought piece" on queerness in Eurovision (camp, kisses, and post-Soviet geopolitics!), the collection is smart, to the point, and as queer as its subject matter refuses to be. This volume makes a welcome addition to Paul Booth and Katherine Larsen's edited book series Fandom and Culture and provides an excellent point of entry for the curious fan or critical scholar."Queerbaiting" is generally understood as the practice of media ... • Beyond Hashtags: Racial Politics and Black Digital Networks by Sarah
Florini, and: #HashtAgactivism: Networks of Race and Gender Justice by
Sarah J. Jackson, Moya Bailey, and Brooke Foucault Welles (review)
    • Abstract: As #metoo was spurring a widespread reckoning over sexual harassment and assault, #BlackLivesMatter propelled the issue of police violence against people of color into mainstream news and public consciousness. Many other hashtags have brought national and international attention to social justice issues, and it is no wonder that a spate of academic works have recently dedicated themselves to understanding activist hashtags. Social media, and digital technology more generally, is heralded as a mechanism by which those outside mainstream media organizations can have a voice in the public sphere, allowing for grassroots visibility and organizing on a scale impossible before its advent. But this activist work also ... Read More

  • Justice on Demand: True Crime in the Digital Streaming Era by Tanya Horeck
           (review)
    • Abstract: As true crime dominates netflix recommendations, podcast charts, and internet memes, Tanya Horeck's Justice on Demand: True Crime in the Digital Streaming Era is a welcome, valuable contribution that updates the academic conception of the genre and its continued popularity. Horeck grapples with the widespread prominence of true crime media in all its forms, taking as the core of her analysis the affective responses produced and managed by contemporary true crime. Through a surprising range of rich case studies, Horeck explores "how the audience is affectively imagined, addressed, and commodified by true crime, in order to consider the ethical and political significance of the genre for a twenty-first-century media ... • Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism by Safiya
Umoja Noble, and: Pattern Discrimination by Clemens Apprich et al.
           (review)
    • Abstract: Algorithms of oppression and pattern discrimination are two works that grapple with the disjuncture between big data's supposed objectivity and the very real ways in which it discriminates on the basis of identity. Specifically, both books build on the idea that the imagined objectivity of big data and search algorithms masks the fact that human beings compile, read, sort, and interpret data and that these interactions reflect the implicit and explicit prejudices and values of the society in which they live. Both books are also attempts at using humanist disciplines to question and contextualize the practices and assumptions of information and computer sciences. While Safiya Umoja Noble merges her background in ... Read More

  • Queer Times, Black Futures by Kara Keeling (review)
    • Abstract: With queer times, black futures, kara Keeling critically explores themes of temporality, spatiality, affect, futurity, and ultimately liberation through engagement with and theorizations of Blackness, queerness, and media. Opening with an invocation of Audre Lorde's "A Litany for Survival," Keeling positions this rich and compelling project as informed by the notion that "poetry is a way of thinking the space/time of politics for those deemed disposable . . . within the contexts of heteropatriarchy and white supremacy" (xi). Central to the text is poetry's role as a tool, or possibly a technology, for working through queer possibilities and futures: poetry's ability to incorporate affect and senses into the ... Read More

  • Superior: The Return of Race Science by Angela Saini, and: Proud Boys and
the White Ethnostate: How the Alt-Right Is Warping the American
Imagination by Alexandra Minna Stern (review)
    • Abstract: Right-wing extremism and its accompanying racism and xenophobia are always simmering under the surface of Western political discourse. The people of color, immigrants, and religious minorities who are targeted by right-wing hatred have to deal with its micromanifestations on a daily basis. For those who do not experience constant reminders of the existence of racism and xenophobia, however, it can be easy to believe that these violent beliefs are held only by those on the fringes of politics, rendering them seemingly powerless. The election of Donald Trump in the United States and the pro-Brexit vote in the United Kingdom in 2016 demonstrated the enduring power of racism, white supremacy, and ultranationalism in ...
