  • Embracing the Complications
    • Abstract: I’m sitting in Michigan watching videos I took last month at the homecoming football game of Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA, where my nephew studies marine biology and plays defensive end. There’s a football game here in East Lansing today, and all I can think—as I hear the furnace kick in and watch the pouring icy rain hit the storm windows—is that absolutely nothing could get me to spend the morning tailgating, and the afternoon sitting in the stands over at the 75,000-seat stadium in this town. But there will be thousands and thousands of Spartan fans huddling, roaring, and bleeding green and white, as they like to say.Football at Humboldt State is of a different sort. Built by the WPA, the 6,000-seat ... Read More

  • Box Set
    • Abstract: for my great-aunt Antoinette (Nettie) Bope, 1880–1902Nettie in a pine box. The family Bible says died young. Erased. Then written in again. A scandal, my mother says. Botched. Back alley. In all the papers. My mother’s name is Moo. He took advantage. Got her drunk. My great-grandma, Nettie’s mother Susan—I’m named for her—saw a bell of fire in Nettie’s shoes left out on the landing. Why don’t you go back to teaching' Names. Begottens. A line of heroes, toting muskets, bugles—our ticket to the DAR. Proper. Nettie’s name erased. Who wrote it back' Moo says Our people didn’t slight. Men’s names, doing muskety things. No family tree for Antoinette. Antoinette (Nettie) Bope. Frenchified Ohio. My mother’s name is Moo. ... Read More

  • Attachment Therapy
    • Abstract: Violence is what happens when we don’t know what else to do with our suffering. In a pile of papers on my desk, I have a picture of a picture of my family in 1979. My mother holds me on her hip, though I am six and too big. Her shoulder-length hair is permed into a mini-afro and she’s Patti Smith–thin. Her dress is the same fabric as my dress, the same fabric as the dress on the doll in my arms. Dad sports shaggy hair and a beard, his hand resting on my nine-year-old brother’s shoulders. The wood paneling on the wall behind us casts an amber glow. Despite my brother’s spazzy, forced-photo face, we look happy—a family alive and going places. The original photo hangs on the dining room wall of my parents’ home in ... Read More

  • Sardine Parties
    • Abstract: Everyone in your little city of Lexington, Kentucky, lives in houses that fence off their neighbors with the bushy heads of oak trees and the cold cement of two-car driveways. Neighbors here keep a perpetual distance from one another. But on weekends, your classmates in 10th grade travel three hours to go to the Smoky Mountains and stuff themselves in tiny tents with their cousins. Or they pile in the car with mom and dad to visit Uncle Max in Cincinnati or Aunt Erma in Indiana. You don’t have extended family less than a 15-hour plane ride away. That’s why your people spend Saturday nights bunched together in a stranger’s house like a can of sardines.Your mother buys a slab of pork, bags of shrimp, and wonton skins ... Read More

  • Goats
    • Abstract: My loathing of farm animals is a consequence of familiarity—I was raised on a farm, and not the tidy kind in pastoral dramas. Ours was muddy and labor-intensive with livestock always needing water or getting loose, always birthing and dying at inconvenient times. I wanted to go to boarding school and be a ballerina. Why then, as an adult, was I spending a perfectly good Monday morning sitting in my mother’s kitchen doing my damnedest to make three newly born kids drink from a bottle' They’re too uncoordinated to eat well. Weak and hungry, they can’t focus and their need is painful. My throat and chest tighten and I can’t draw a deep breath. There’s a little bit of panic for me when I’m holding something so ... • Popo
    • Abstract: The Chinese World Daily is my grandmother’s gospel. This is how she knew that Clinton had an affair with Monica, and Hillary is a good woman. This is how she learned she should stock up on bottled water after September 11th and stay away from LAX around New Year’s. And this is how she heard that too much Vitamin C might actually be bad for you, but eating large quantities of mu’er (a kind of fungus) helps the heart.Every day Popo goes out to buy the paper from the corner store for 50 cents. Most days, it’s her only excuse to step outside her condo. But first, she must get ready. Since her arthritis makes her cold, she puts on long underwear beneath tight jeans and a thin wool sweater, even if it’s 80 degrees out. ... Read More

  • Not in My Backyard
    • Abstract: For a few months one summer when I was a kid, a homeless man slept in the alleyway behind our home. Our backyard shared a fence with a two-story Methodist church that went largely unused during the week, and the small concrete patio beneath its back stairs made for a quiet, inviting shelter from the rain. The man generally came and went under the cover of night, so we didn’t notice him much, but occasionally we’d hear him cough, or smell cigarette smoke wafting over the fence, and we’d know he was back again. I don’t remember actually fearing him, per se, but fearing the idea of him—that someone could so easily breach our quiet suburban bubble. And I don’t know how many nights he spent sleeping on the other side of ... Read More

  • Dog Brain
    • Abstract: We are at a spiritual retreat in a Florida state park in January, and it is below freezing outside. Inside, the heating vents are loud—so loud we are nearly shouting to be heard—and cigarette smoke fills the upper third of the large room. This is the last habit we kick. The retreat is for addicts. While it is welcoming to all, most of the attendees’ primary problem is one of substance: cheap liquor thrown up first thing in the morning, lighter burns on finger edges, track marks in the armslegsfeet. Once the substances are gone, other problems linger. We make wishes on lottery tickets and card hands. We struggle to leave abusive partners. We tear open our bodies with sharp objects. We watch pornography compulsively. ... Read More

  • Whale Fall
    • Abstract: This is the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the drowned valley of the Susquehanna. Out on the water, the dim opal surface of an overcast morning, my uncle reels in his cages. Each one is bursting with blue crabs. Sputtering and cackling, they stumble over one another. They snap at the metal bars. They’re looking for a break. The bayside docks are awake, and the smell of coffee billows out to sea from the little inlet cafés. The smell is warm and rich. There, too, is the downwind smell of phosphorus, a rank smell, drifting off the tidal wetlands: the marine dead zone of stagnant water thickly blanketed in algae bloom. This is the end of September. The trees have begun to drift, dropping their red and brown lashes along ... Read More

  • The Maternal Lizard Brain
    • Abstract: two almond-shaped clusters of cells located deep within the gray matter of the temporal lobe. The second oldest part of the brain, the lizard brain is responsible for fear and may override the thinking brain, resulting in fight, flight, or fright.the part of the brain that senses danger; the amygdala.Uses in a sentence: Emerging from the top of a spinal column at night, moonlit and glistening, the lizard brain is hardy, bent on protecting its young.See also paleomammalian brain, the boogeyman, monsters under the bed. When my husband and young daughter are sleeping, my house made peaceful with the hum of a floor fan and the soft hoot of a great horned owl in our backyard maple, my lizard brain buzzes with neural ... • Emily in the Ocean
    • Abstract: On a snowy evening in December, Emily and I eat together in the dining room of her senior assisted-living facility. It’s cold outside, the first significant drop in a mild Minneapolis winter, and the room is set at 76 degrees.“Do you see him'” Emily asks me.I follow her gaze across the room. “The men at the table over there'”“No, no, behind them.”“I don’t think so.”“He’s beautiful. So beautiful. In swim trunks diving off that giant board into the big pool underneath. Now he’s doing a back dive.” The man flips and climbs, she says, before flipping again.I look around the dining room. Everyone wears sweaters and scarves, despite the warm room. They sit in groups of four or six, eating and sipping water—and ... Read More

  • Don’t Fucking Touch Me
    • Abstract: Mary Magdalene was the first person to see Jesus after his resurrection. Mary who is not “Mary,” who is not the whore she seems to be. Imagine her wonder as the corpse walks towards her, hard drops of blood on his temple wettening as night turns to morning and history begins again. In the King James Bible, Jesus emerged and “saith to her, ‘Touch me not: for I am not yet ascended to my Father.’” The World English Bible takes issue with touch, maintains that our lord and savior looked on to Mary, his devoted disciple, and told the poor girl, “Don’t hold me.” In Latin, noli me tangere.Jesus, ping-ponged between death, divine daddy, and back again, loses something in translation. Always one for a foot bath or a ... Read More

  • What Waiting Looks Like
    • Abstract: I hold out my fingers and count forward to nine. I land on July, when I will scan the Indiana sky for signs of rain, then hang my sheets and towels on a line between two crooked trees. The heat will draw my dogs out like hyphens across the floor and the cat will roll over, white belly turned up to me when I check the mail—nothing there. Tiger lilies will brushstroke towards the blue-white sky and the hosta will burn brown, curling in on itself in the afternoon sun.The November rain begins again. I put my hands back in my pockets and shiver. Inside, the dogs curl their bodies like commas and the cat tucks his feet under him like a black and white chicken. The neighborhood’s Christmas lights glow watery under the ... Read More

  • What’s Not There
    • Abstract: I don’t remember which Robert Ryman painting was on display at the MOMA, but I remember its pull, the spark from the canvas directed right at my chest. It was the same color as the walls, white on white, alone. The paint was thick, in repeated waves, whitecap after whitecap, energy contained, reaching. A white canvas on a white wall in New York City.Giddy seems most apt: from Old English gidig, “insane,” literally “possessed by a god.” Dizzy, whirling, I was giddy, not with God but with art. I wanted to stand by its light for a very long time.“If I look at some white panels in my studio,” Ryman says in an Art21 interview, “I see the white—but I am not conscious of them being white. They react with the wood, the ... Read More

  • Commentary on the Graphic Memoir
    • Abstract: There’s an old Hollywood adage that perfectly describes the sometimes contentious relationship between a film’s director and its writer: “If you think the screenplay is the movie, try running it through the projector.” Reading that, I envision a thick-browed Scorsese type, straight out of central casting. He chomps his cigar and points angrily at the writer, asserting his cinematic command. I can bring this scene to life by describing it, using just a few scratchy black marks we call letters on a page. But film, as the adage points out, is a visual medium that uses more than just the written word to bring story to life. Image is essential. Graphic memoir is much the same. Writers must employ image along with words ... Read More

  • So Slight a Thing as a Word: Reflections on Marilynne Robinson
    • Abstract: On slipping my submission for Marilynne Robinson’s class into her department mailbox, I attached a note. I don’t remember, this quarter-century later, exactly what the note said. I probably mentioned that “A Girlhood” was not really a story but an essay from House Dreams, a memoir that I hoped to publish. I do remember alluding to how the themes implied in my memoir’s title—the housiness and the dreaminess—echoed, by pure happenstance, similar themes in Robinson’s Housekeeping. I tried to convey my excitement at studying under a writer whose sensibilities, like mine, had been honed on western beauty. On my way to class, I saw Marilynne advancing regally down the hall in her long gray raincoat and shoulder-length ... • Alpine Heart
    • Abstract: In the popular imagination, Switzerland is a land of cheese and chocolate, the place where Heidi runs to the mountains to tend her grandfather’s goats. Yet in Alpine Apprentice: A Memoir, Sarah Gorham reaches deeper than these true-enough tropes, sharing what it meant as a teenager to attend an alpine boarding school focused in equal measure on discipline and ex cellence.Sarah Gorham has previously published four collections of poetry and one essay collection, Study in Perfect, which won the Association of Writers & Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction. She is also the cofounder and editor in chief of Sarabande Books. Now, in Alpine Apprentice: A Memoir, Gorham focuses on two years she spent as a teenager ... Read More

  • She Finally Gets Her Close-Up
    • Abstract: Over the last 50 years, Phillip Lopate has published eight collections of essays, including Portrait Inside My Head, three collections of poetry, three novels, two books of nonfiction, and one memoir, while editing six anthologies, most notably The Art of the Personal Essay. His reputation as one of the most distinguished living essayists in the twenty-first century is unquestionably deserved. Mad River Books has published A Mother’s Tale, Lopate’s latest nonfiction book. Not quite a collection of essays, not quite a memoir, A Mother’s Tale is a brazen conversation, a dialogue between mother and son, a drama that I can imagine as a play.A Mother’s Tale shares an intimate conversation between 41-year-old Phillip ... • A Mind Thinking
    • Abstract: Those of us who have followed the work of Julija Šukys have long known what a wonderful writer and rigorous researcher she is. She uncovers previously unexplored archives, finds and secures interviews throughout the world, and uses her fluency in several languages to read her way through the stacks of dozens of libraries; but more than that, she turns her search into a compelling story and braids that story with the story of the lives she’s researching. I know of no one who does this better.Šukys’s 2012 book, Epistolophilia: Writing the Life of Ona Šimatė, is a remarkable work of research, translation, and recovery that tells the story of an unlikely, long-overlooked heroine. Ona Šimatė was unmarried, walked with a ... Read More
