  • Redemption and Representation in Goblin Market: Christina Rossetti and the
           Salvific Signifier
    • Abstract: Critical pieties die hard on the well-trodden slopes of Christina Rossetti’s “mossy glen” (l. 87).1 “[T]here is no market in Goblin Market,” Simon Humphries pointed out in 2007,2 an observation that has gone stubbornly unnoticed, or unprocessed, in subsequent scholarship on the poem. Rather than reconsidering the now venerable tradition of market-oriented readings of Rossetti’s text—a tradition whose founding moment we may locate in the early 1990s, when scholars such as Elizabeth Campbell, Terence Holt, Elizabeth K. Helsinger, and Richard Menke proposed their influential accounts of the poem as a more or less radical critique of commodity capitalism:3 in Herbert Tucker’s catchy formula, “put[ing] the market back ... • “Like Two Pigeons in One Nest, Like Two Seedlings in One Capsule”:
Reading Goblin Market in Conjunction with Victorian Twin Discourse
    • Abstract: The first four lines of Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market contain four of the most arresting instances of twinning in Victorian literature:The duplication of “come buy” in the final line and its repetition of the single “come buy” in the line before are the most obvious of these twinnings, but there is also the homonymic slippage by which that same “come buy” is simultaneously “come by, come by,” an invitation to the listeners. Most subtly, there is the joining of morning and evening, two sides of the day, two sides of the line, made interchangeable by the copulative “and.” Such repetitions, duplications, and connections both give Goblin Market its uncanniness and reveal its roots in the uncanny. They also link ... Read More

  • Gathering Sense from Song: Robert Browning and the Romantic Epistemology
           of Music
    • Abstract: The place of music in nineteenth-century poetry and fiction has garnered much interest in recent criticism and has stimulated innovative work on the idea of music in nineteenth-century British literature, including the political, class, and gendered implications of music in fiction and poetry; yet the crucial fact that music provided poetry with a philosophic language is given less attention than it merits.1 Felicia Bonaparte argues that its philosophical significance is often missed because twentieth- and twenty-first-century thought has inherited an empirical concept of music. This is distinct from the Victorian idea of music that was influenced by German Romantic theory.2 While the predominant eighteenth-century ... Read More

  • “A Royal Lady [Re]born”: Balladry, Transport, and Transgression in
           Michael Field’s The Tragic Mary
    • Abstract: When “Michael Field”—the pseudonym of Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper—visited Edinburgh in October 1889, they experienced a transportation into the city’s poetic past. Edinburgh, allegorized as a woman in the opening lines of the preface to their play The Tragic Mary (1890), fascinates the couple and draws them to her: “Beautiful for situation, happy in the way the light visits her, noble in natural outline, and favoured even in the rise and declivity of her streets, it is nevertheless as the repository of her Queen’s tragedy that Edinburgh fascinates us to herself.”1 Michael Field’s language of transport and suspension of volition as the city “fascinates” them and draws them toward its historically tragic queen ... • Wandering between Ten Worlds: Morris’s Guenevere Poems and the
           Failure of Discourse
    • Abstract: In “The Defence of Guenevere” and “King Arthur’s Tomb,” the opening poems of William Morris’s 1858 volume The Defence of Guenevere, and Other Poems, Morris shows through the tragic relationship of Guenevere and Launcelot how discourse systems limit the ways we can experience our lives. By representing the conceptual struggles of Guenevere and Launcelot, whose needs, natures, and experiences greatly exceed their systems’ ability to define and categorize, Morris critiques not only the conceptual systems available during his own time but the very possibility of achieving satisfying truth or transcendence. In these early poems, conflicting conceptual systems, each of which claims full interpretive authority, plague the ... Read More
