  • A Note from the Editor
    • Abstract: Welcome to the first issue of 2018. As one of the official journals (along with Theatre Journal) of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, Theatre Topics traditionally dedicates a section of the first issue of the year to documenting the previous ATHE conference. 2017 brought the conference to Las Vegas, a location that generated a wide range of responses from attendees. For some, Las Vegas seemed an ideal place for a theatre conference—a place of wondrous spectacle, sexual liberation, and fascinating simulacra. One attendee (who shall not be named) even revealed that graduate-school bills were paid off with some shrewd card-playing skills at the casinos. For others, Las Vegas represented commodification ... • 2017 ATHE Presidential Address
    • Abstract: When I joined the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) in summer 1999, eighteen years ago, and attended my first conference in Toronto, I knew very little about ATHE. It was one of several academic associations to which I had been directed by faculty. I returned to ATHE over the next few years, not because I had a clear sense of what the association does, but because I liked the people. ATHE members are passionate about theatre, devoted to pedagogy, and eager to share new skills and research with one another. ATHE friends helped me to appreciate the scope and mission of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. When smart, driven, charismatic educators like J. Ellen Gainor, Daniel Banks, David ... • The Open Forum of ATHE
    • Abstract: On August 5, 2017, before the business meeting of ATHE at the 2017 conference, the governing council brought together a group of interested attendees to talk about the current state of affairs in our institutions at this political and cultural moment. Attendees were asked the following questions:What are the greatest challenges you are facing in your own institutions' How are you meeting those challenges'What realities are you facing in terms of funding and institutional support'How are you supporting students' How are students reacting to the present moment in your classrooms and in their academic and creative work'How might ATHE support you in your work in the future' How would you like to continue discussions in ... • 2017 ATHE Conference Plenary: A Spectacular Balancing Act
    • Abstract: When the thought came up about discussing the overall theme of our conference, “the art of the spectacle,” as it relates to the circus arts and particularly its contemporary iteration and the influence Cirque du Soleil has had for such performance in our country, the name of Louis Patrick Leroux immediately came to mind. Dr. Leroux is a playwright, director, and professor at Concordia University; he is also the founding director of the Montreal Working Group on Circus Research. While solidifying his role as a contemporary circus dramaturg for companies and institutions such as les 7 doigts de la main and Montreal’s École nationale de cirque, Leroux, through his media commentary, ended right at the center of the ... • Freedom Singer: Modeling Performative Witnessing in Documentary Theatre
    • Abstract: This essay will illustrate how Freedom Singer, the latest documentary theatre offering from Toronto-based company Project: Humanity, combines personal narrative with a unique repurposing of headphone verbatim; this combination complicates and interrupts easy identification with the autobiographical subject to highlight the responsibility and culpability of the individual in the perpetuation of national narratives. The play wrestles with Canada’s history of slavery, its national narrative regarding the Underground Railroad, and the question of whose stories have been included or erased from that narrative—all through the lens of the researcher/performer, who is both a musician and descendant of a “freedom runner” (a ... Focusing on the inter-Asian context of East Asia and Southeast Asia, “A Home on the Island,” parts 1–2 is a multisite practice as research (PaR) project that examines the formation of home through commercialized transnational-marriage migration. Part 1, “A Home on the Island: Bodies, Objects, and Narratives,” was conducted on June 28, 2015 as a one-day applied-theatre workshop at National University of Singapore (NUS). Through Boal-inspired theatre games, exercises, image theatre, and scene improvisation, workshop participants explored the notion of home and its formation in relation to migration and globalization. Part 2, “A Home on the ... Read More

  • Teaching Worldmindedness in a Mixed Majors and Nonmajors World Theatre
Course: The Work of Rabindranath Tagore Explored through Third Culture
           Classroom Spaces
    • Abstract: Acknowledging the subjectivity of students is at the heart of pedagogy intent on cultivating students’ worldmindedness.1 Creating a classroom that gestures toward what Homi Bhabha calls a “third space”—“a space . . . of translation: a space of hybridity, figuratively speaking, where the constructions of a political object that is new . . . properly alienates our political expectations, and changes, as it must, the very forms of our recognition in the moment of politics”; such a space enables instructors and students to engage more fully with diverse cultural artifacts and vantage points (25). Current pedagogic texts like the Longman Anthology of Drama and Theatre, Theatre Histories, and World Theories of Theatre ... Read More

  • One Summer, Three Hamlets: A Practical Guide to Flow Fight Direction
    • Abstract: The concluding sword fight in Hamlet . . . after 400 years, has been staged in almost every conceivable way—from Lord Olivier’s florid and athletic fencing exhibition (including that extraordinary leap) to Mel Gibson’s gritty minimalism. . . . Since Hamlet is one of the Western World’s most frequently produced plays, it is likely that someone using this book will be called upon to direct or perform its final, fatal fight. What would you do to bring new life and luster to this best-known of all stage combats'As a Shakespearean scholar and a fight director, it was simply a matter of time before someone hired me to stage the iconic duel in Hamlet. It just so happened that the first of many such opportunities came not ... Read More

  • Guest Editor’s Introduction: Failing Better
    • Abstract: In the sciences there is growing recognition of a phenomenon known as “publication bias,” in which studies with positive findings are more likely to be published. It is not surprising perhaps that researchers are more likely to publish results that successfully prove their hypotheses, but this bias can also come from the editorial side. After all, when a technique or treatment cannot be proven to be effective there is less urgency to share that information. When a hypothesis goes unconfirmed it is much more difficult to see how the project answers the inevitable “so what'” question. The field of theatre and performance studies is hardly exempt from our own forms of publication bias. When selecting the artists ... Read More

  • The Sign Language Interpreted Performance: A Failure of Access Provision
           for Deaf Spectators
    • Abstract: Sign language interpreted performances (SLIPs) are performances of spoken-language theatre rendered simultaneously to Deaf spectators through a single interpreter using sign language (Gebron; Rocks 2015) rather than other access tools, such as supertitles or captions. Initially requested from within the Deaf community, nowadays the demand for SLIPs is driven more by audience-development goals and access requirements (Simpson), and significant time and money are invested in their provision in the UK by both producing and receiving theatres. Despite this, the number of Deaf people attending is lower than expected (Lee), and Deaf theatre-makers suggest that SLIPs do not offer genuine accessibility (Bangs; Conley). My ... Read More

  • The Many Middling Failures of Miss Virginia Calhoun
    • Abstract: Performance historiography is premised on success. Watershed dates, events, and figures focus our narratives, coordinate our periodizations, and anchor our claims for significance. Our traditional tales of theatre’s history depend on such moments of invention and intervention, or on occasions of disruption and discovery: Thespis steps from the chorus; Okuni dances in the riverbed; Nora slams the door. Synecdochic evocations of past “success” stand as privileged cues to apprehending what matters, then and now, in performance history. Those tales of obscurity and failure that we tell are likewise typically rendered in triumphant terms. Theatre historians routinely rediscover and retroactively celebrate the heretofore ... Read More

  • World Theories of Theatre by Glenn A. Odom (review)
    • Abstract: Contrary to his title’s first impressions, Glenn Odom’s World Theories of Theatre makes no claims of exhaustiveness. Odom specifies world as “that portion of the world which is not Europe, Russia, or the U.S.—which is to say, most of the world” (1). He thus contests the tendency of English-language theatre-theory anthologies to relegate “most of the world” to a few stray contributions tucked between works from Anglo-/Eurosphere authors. As a corrective, Odom focuses on theatre as theorized by artists from Africa, the Middle East, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Oceania. As a teacher and scholar, I endorse Odom’s lament about the hegemony of Western views and the tokenization of “everything else.” Our field ... Read More

  • Digital Costume Design and Collaboration: Applications in Academia,
Theatre, and Film by Rafael Jaen (review)
    • Abstract: Designing in an increasingly digital world with tech-savvy students presents a new set of challenges to an old art form. Students obtain and disseminate information and communicate primarily by digital means. Adapting theatre classes to a digital world is not difficult, but finding a text to suit the needs of a costume design course that still addresses some of the more elementary but critical skills needed of costume designers has not existed. Many costume-design faculty use Liz Covey and Rosemary Ingham’s incredible resource, The Costume Designers Handbook, in their classes. Other foundational texts might be Rebecca Cunningham’s The Magic Garment and Melissa Merz’s The Art and Practice of Costume Design. However ... Read More

  • Rhythm in Acting and Performance: Embodied Approaches and Understandings
           by Eilon Morris (review)
    • Abstract: To start, Eilon Morris informs the reader that they will not find a simple definition or universal concept of rhythm in this book. Instead, through a well-balanced dose of theory and practice as research from his years in rehearsal and training rooms as a theatre practitioner, percussionist, educator, and scholar, Morris adeptly unpacks the complex relationship with rhythm in training and performance. With risk of sounding overly effusive, as an acting instructor this is a book I have been wanting for years. Its value comes from Morris’s approach. While he may at times seem to prize an empirical rather than the rational interaction with rhythm, he does accept that analyzing rhythm for performance requires ... Read More

  • Playwriting: A Writers’ and Artists’ Companion by Fraser
           Grace, Clare Bayley (review)
    • Abstract: Playwriting: A Writers’ and Artists’ Companion by Fraser Grace and Clare Bayley is a readable and mostly comprehensive introduction to writing for the stage for new playwrights (or students of playwriting as yet too unsure to claim the title). The book is divided into three parts: “Playwriting: The View from Above”; “Tips and Tales: Guest Contributions”; and “Write On: The View from the Ground.” Between these three parts the authors offer advice for both effective writing and maintaining a career. For readers with some basic theatre training Grace and Bayley do not chart unknown territory, but they do present a detailed map of the current playwriting landscape. For true beginners this book would be an extremely ... Read More

  • Annotating Vegas: Mapping Performance Interventions at ATHE 2017
    • Abstract: In August 2017, the annual ATHE conference was held in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. As the co-organizers of the Performance Studies Focus Group’s (PSFG) fourteenth annual pre-conference, we had hoped to arrange a backstage tour of one of the many spectacular entertainments on offer in Vegas. We had imagined the theoretical thrills of taking a few dozen performance scholars backstage at Cirque du Soleil or Blue Man Group or Thunder from Down Under. We thought we might offer multiple plenary sessions addressing Las Vegas and its myriad spectacular pleasures, along with its overt and aggressive embrace of fantasy, simulacra, and misogyny. It was obvious to us that the work should exist—perhaps ... Read More

  • Four Principles about Site-Specific Theatre: A Conversation on
           Architecture, Bodies, and Presence
    • Abstract: Amid the flashing neon signs for Bally’s, the replica Eiffel Tower, and people dressed in oversized Spongebob Squarepants costumes, four figures dressed completely in white, with stark white makeup, move slowly down the Las Vegas strip. A small girl ignores the jumping fountains of the Bellagio behind her to stare in seeming wonder at these silent people progressing toward her. She reaches out and the person is real and present with her, reaching back. In this glittering city of spectacle a different form of spectacle has been momentarily introduced.Site-specific performance is nothing new. In Western theatre the Futurists and Dadaists in the early 1900s to 1920s, the Happenings and Richard Schechner’s ... Read More
