  • Harnessing the Transformational Potential of Education to Meet National
and Global Developmental Needs of Southern Cameroons: Re-Thinking Theory
           and Practice
    • Abstract: “…history exerts a powerful influence on education, in the sense that educational development is a function of societies’ historical development; that education bears many traces of the past and, finally, that it is time for education to help make history, by preparing for it.”1 What is the purpose of education' Although this seems to be a straightforward question that most societies are concerned with, the answer is not so easy. Education is a universal construct, but its conceptualization differs from context to context, and among policy makers, educators, politicians, philosophers, and nations. For the purpose of our topic development, I will suggest a simple definition of education as the process of ... Read More

  • Who Will Succeed Sako' A Paradox of the Ambazonian Revolution:
Fighting for Liberation but ending up with an Autocratic Post-Independence
           Government'
    • Abstract: The recent uprisings against dictatorships in North Africa and the Middle East have generated a lot of excitement. But the expectations from this “Arab Spring” have rarely translated into a new emancipatory society. Even in cases such as Egypt where authoritarian leadership was toppled by the people, the dream of a new Egypt has not been realized. In fact, in some places, one repressive regime replaced the other. This experience is similar to what many other Africans experienced in the 1990s prodemocracy uprisings against totalitarian governments and after the liberation wars against colonialism in the 1960s. The societies for which they fought never materialized, but in their place emerged African leaders who ... Read More

  • Beyond Settler Futurism: Schotten’s Queer Terror
    • Abstract: In Queer Terror, Heike Schotten provides an important contribution to continued efforts to theorize the enduring legacies of US imperialism and settler colonialism. In a creative and compelling blend of queer theory, biopolitics, canonical political theory, settler colonial studies, and critical indigenous theory, Schotten sets out to explore the roots of the War on Terror in the settler colonial project. One of Queer Terror’s central contributions is to reframe “the biopolitics of settler sovereignty as operating primarily at the level of desire, not biology, which establishes the distinction between life and death via the institution of temporality” (xiv). Put differently, settler sovereignty ideologically ... Read More

  • Good White People: Lisa Slater’s Anxieties of Belonging in Settler
           Colonialism
    • Abstract: It is neither an accident nor a secret that settler colonialism constitutes settlers as specific kinds of subjects.1 This is Lisa Slater’s focus in Anxieties of Belonging in Settler Colonialism: Australia, Race, and Place (Routledge, 2019), where she wagers that specific types of settler subjects must be unmade or reconfigured if decolonial futures are to become possible. Slater focuses on a configuration of subjectivity she calls “good white people” (or, sometimes, “good white women”)—“progressive, educated, middle class, cosmopolitans, whose political and personal identities are tested, and found wanting, in the face of cultural differences and Aboriginal self-determination” (5)—and the anxiety they experience ... • Unsettling Democracy: Adam Dahl’s Empire of the People
    • Abstract: At the close of Adam Dahl’s Empire of the People, he calls for unsettling democracy. To do so, he turns to Indigenous political thought, in particular decolonial theories of democracy. It is here that he finds the conceptual tools that he argues are vital to reimagining the democratic tradition. Invoking and extending the work of Mohawk scholar Taiaiake Alfred, he appeals for political theorists to draw upon Indigenous conceptions of nonsovereign democracy, to rethink power: not based upon mastery and control, but rather in terms of relationality and interdependence. Power is ecological, each part dependent on the other. Justice is an ongoing process of harmonizing of collective life; however, equilibrium is ... Read More

Drawing from Foucault’s methodological orientation and, more specifically, Foucault’s conception of genealogical historical inquiry by emphasizing complexity, contingency and critique, Koopman asks what are the conditions that make it possible for us to be our data' Koopman does not argue that we are nothing but our data but that, given our epoch of informational culture, data comprises a significant facet of our “being.”Koopman’s thesis rests on the historical development of data formatting, illuminating how in the development from older analog technologies to more ... • #DIFFERENTIATE #SPECIATE: On Jairus Victor Grove’s Savage Ecology
    • Abstract: Georges Bataille began the first volume of The Accursed Share as such: “No one can say without being comical that he is getting ready to overturn things. He must overturn, and that is all.”1 Whatever else it does, Jairus Victor Grove’s Savage Ecology overturns many things without comically announcing as much. The result is a darkly explosive work. While writing The Accursed Share, Bataille was “embarrassed” to be composing an economic opus which “qualified economists” would not likely accept.2 Bataille’s embarrassment stemmed from the fact that he was known as a fiction writer, and yet here he was attempting to overturn economic thinking. Per Bataille, such thinking had conventionally understood economics in a ... Read More

  • Introduction
    • Abstract: This issue takes up questions of activism, postcoloniality and creation of new states. Focusing on how European colonialism continues to affect the African continent, this issue turns to the Western African nation-state of Cameroon. A consequence of German colonization, Cameroon was divided into two sections in the wake of the First World War. The largest Eastern landmass was controlled by the French, while England claimed the West. Even after decolonization, a portion of the Eastern area known as Southern Cameroons continued to use the English language and British common law.In the 1990s, political representatives of this area—the Southern Cameroons National Council—emerged to claim independence from Cameroon. In ... Read More

  • Introduction
    • Abstract: The articles in this special issue represent only one area of Ambazonian global activism. Over the last four years, there has been a concerted and diverse effort to draw attention to the genocide in (Ambazonia) the former British Southern Cameroons territory now under occupation by the government of French Cameroun. Ambazonians have staged protest marches from Lagos, Abuja, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, to Washington, London, Berlin, Geneva etc. They have utilized social media instruments including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, and have written letters to the UN, AU, Commonwealth and many foreign and international organizations. Like with other advocacy movements, gauging the success of every action is ... Read More

  • Southern Cameroons/Ambazonia Conflict: A Political Economy
    • Abstract: Critical issues of governance in Cameroon and the unfair domination by the Francophone political class have historically attracted little external focus. However, this perception has changed due to the economic and political upheaval in the country known as the Anglophone crisis or the Ambazonian war, which is a long standing dispute between the government of Cameroon and independent separatists from the Southwest and Northwest (Southern Cameroons) region.1 Cameroon is referred to as “Africa in miniature”2 owing to its geographical, linguistic and cultural heterogeneity. Host to one of the highest literacy rates on the continent, Cameroon is viewed as all of Africa in a single country because it exhibits all the ... Read More

  • Question Concerning the Nationality of the People of Ambazonia: A Critical
           Inquiry
    • Abstract: Everyone has the right to a nationality. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality. (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Art 15)Nationality is the legal affiliation of a person with a sovereign state. It is “the legal status of membership of the collectivity of individuals whose acts, decisions, and policy are vouchsafed through the legal concept of the state representing those individuals.”3 A man’s (sic) nationality has judicially been described as forming a continuing state of things and not a physical fact which occurs at a particular moment. … a continuing legal relationship between the sovereign State on the one hand and the citizen on the other. The fundamental basis of a man’s nationality ... Read More

  • Southern Cameroons/Ambazonia: The Economic Beacon in the Making'
    • Abstract: Many countries have once been in the situation where Southern Cameroons finds itself today. But Eritrea and South Sudan provide the most productive sites for comparison for a number of reasons: (1) at least a decade has passed since their independence struggles, (2) their economies are stabilized and regularly assessed for growth potential, and (3) they share similar colonial histories of being subject to and fought over by multiple European and African countries. A significant amount of time has passed since these countries achieved their freedom from the nations that oppressed and tried to deny them independence. It is understood that political and judicial freedom or independence does not necessarily mean that ... Read More

  • The Plight of a Failed Decolonization: The Southern Cameroons,
           1946–1961
    • Abstract: In October and November 2016 the Lawyers and the Teachers of the English expression in the two Anglophone regions (North West and South West) of Cameroon went on strike against the continuous attempts by the Francophone majority to wipe out the English Common Law practice and the English educational system. The strike action soon morphed to involve students, pupils and the civil society. The Anglophone crisis in Cameroon, as it has come to be known, has excited great public curiosity in the history of the Southern Cameroons and the reunification of former and the Cameroun Republic. The discussions and debates have animated both public and private space, dominating news headlines in the popular press and equally an ... Read More

  • Pondering France’s Silence and Inaction in the Southern Cameroons
           Genocide
    • Abstract: The study of conflict in Cameroon prompts a study on France because in Cameroon, as elsewhere in francophone Africa, France has always had the ultimate say on all existential crises that threaten regime survival or that impugn on the shape, form or direction of the state. In 2011, for example, France intervened militarily in Cote d’Ivoire to reassert control and deny Laurent Gbagbo, then president, from taking the country into a direction that would have been detrimental to French interests.1 This has been the case in Chad, Burkina Faso, Togo, Gabon, Mali, Congo Brazzaville, the Central African Republic, and Cote d’Ivoire. The crisis in Cameroon is undeniably an existential crisis. Carried to its logical ... Read More
