  • Abortion, Gay Rights, and the National Gay Federation in Ireland,
           1982–1983
    • Abstract: The issue is about a woman's right to choose to control her own body and it's about your right as a gay man to control your body.In the period between 2015 and 2018, the Republic of Ireland held two seminal referendums: the 2015 same-sex marriage referendum and the 2018 referendum on repealing the Eighth Amendment, which had placed a constitutional ban on abortion in 1983.1 Both referendums, which passed by large majorities, signaled the dramatic transformation that had taken place in the Republic of Ireland in the preceding years, allowing the country to leave behind the image of a socially conservative society dominated by the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The 2015 same-sex marriage referendum was all ... Read More

  • Foucault, Early Christian Ideas of Genitalia, and the History of Sexuality
    • Abstract: This article is a combination of historiographic theoretical revision and a close reading of medical, philosophical, and theological texts referring to the genitalia between 50 BCE and 450 CE. The Latin noun pudenda, which became a common term in the theological and medical writing of antiquity, innovated the localization of sexual shame in a specific part of the external generative organs: the genitalia. The adjectival form of genitalia—genital—first appeared only around the mid-first century CE.1 But Roman uses of "genital" differed in a fundamental way from the reconstruction of the nominal form in early Christian theology between the first and fifth centuries. This article is about that important conceptual ... Read More

  • "This Will Be the Love of the Future": Italian LGBT People and Their
Emotions in Letters from the Fuori! and Massimo Consoli Archives,
           1970–1984
    • Abstract: "Reading your magazine has enabled me to liberate myself from every prejudice once and for all. . . . You can't believe . . . how much joy I felt after receiving your letter. I turned it over in my hands, I read it again and again, incredibly happy about the fact that somebody was addressing me . . . as I really am and not as I pretend to be."1 This is one of many enthusiastic reactions—in this case, that of a nineteen-year-old boy from Rome—by readers of Fuori!, the first Italian LGBT magazine, published in Turin between 1971 and 1982. The letters analyzed in this essay are full of references to emotions. Expressions of rage, affection, joy, and affliction permeated both the debate and the rhetoric of the first ... Read More

  • "Gay Teachers Fight Back!": Rank-and-File Gay and Lesbian Teachers'
Activism against the Briggs Initiative, 1977–1978
    • Abstract: At a press conference in Los Angeles in September 1978, John Briggs, a California state senator from Orange County and self-proclaimed born-again Christian, roared: "If you'd put a second-grade child with a homosexual you're off your gourd. . . . We don't let necrophiliacs be morticians," he persisted. "We've got to be crazy to allow homosexuals who have an affinity for young boys to teach our children."1 The "homosexual" in question at the press conference was Larry Berner, a thirty-eight-year-old second-grade teacher at Fitch Mountain Elementary School in Healdsburg, California, a quiet town on the Russian River sixty-five miles north of San Francisco.2 Briggs directed his animosity at Berner because Briggs was ... • Alternative Histories of the Self: A Cultural History of Sexuality and
           Secrets by Anna Clark (review)
    • Abstract: The constitution of the self has done more to orient—and disorient—Western philosophy, art, and culture in the last several centuries than just about anything else. Rapid economic and social change and the proliferation of encounters of difference within and between cultures have destabilized or shattered inherited certainties about the self and identity. Anna Clark's Alternative Histories of the Self contributes a compelling close study of five key personalities, the Chevalier/Chevalière d'Éon, Anne Lister, Richard Johnson, James Hinton, and Edith Ellis, whose biographies are mapped against the radical rethinking of subjectivity that spanned the eras from Rousseau to Nietzsche. The stories of these personalities ... Read More

           and Katherine Inglis (review)
    • Abstract: Few people believe in free speech. Many pay lip service to a Voltairean ethos—"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"—but few mean it in practice. Rare is the person with no red lines. This fascinating volume by Matthew Fellion and Katherine Inglis is about those red lines: the attempt since the fourteenth century—by religious and political authorities, by morality crusaders, by the "politically correct," and by self-censorship—to impose, police, reinforce, move, or erase them. The authors claim that their book is a "history," but it is not—not even really a "literary history." Anyone searching for a coherent narrative and analysis of censorship and its travails in the two ... Read More

  • The War on Sex ed. by David Halperin and Trevor Hoppe (review)
    • Abstract: Michel Foucault undid the repressive hypothesis and then some. While Foucault reimagined sexuality as a site of perverse implantations, as biopolitical administration, and through such striking images as the "perpetual spirals of power and pleasure" at play in the various regulatory technologies of sex and its confessions, the generations of historians of sexuality inspired by Foucault's work may also have overemphasized some of the productive aspects of repression at the expense of attending to crude old methods like incarcerating people in cages as punishment for their sins.Or at least, such is the tacit gambit of David Halperin and Trevor Hoppe's War on Sex, whose blunt title is elaborated on in Halperin's ... • Reproduction: Antiquity to the Present Day ed. by Nick Hopwood, Rebecca
           Fleming, and Lauren Kassell (review)
    • Abstract: Reproduction: Antiquity to the Present Day is an enormously ambitious interdisciplinary collaboration by over sixty scholars that attempts to trace the history of human reproduction from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to the twenty-first century. Edited by Nick Hopwood, Rebecca Fleming, and Lauren Kassell, the volume collects forty-two essays, as well as forty "exhibits"—short essays dealing with particular images and artifacts. Reproduction draws on a wide variety of academic fields, from sociology to the history of science, from art history to demographics, not to mention philosophy, theology, and botany. The volume addresses an impressively broad range of topics, including Galenic medicine, scholastic theology ... Read More

  • Circulating Queerness: Before the Gay and Lesbian Novel by Natasha Hurley
           (review)
    • Abstract: Within the last several decades the world of queer studies has rocketed through several stages, from the discovery (or rather uncovering) of gay writing of the past, through analysis and digestion, to become finally the grist of theory. In such an extremely short passage of time, these stages inevitably overlap and sometimes run headlong into each other, so that the work of the so-called anthologists—still ongoing, as Natasha Hurley acknowledges—is being published alongside that of the theorists, often before a full exploration of its substance. Circulating Queerness hovers, sometimes uneasily, between these several stages, not quite sure where it will alight. Clearly adapted from a dissertation, its insistence on ... Read More

  • Effeminate Years: Literature, Politics, and Aesthetics in
Mid-Eighteenth-Century Britain by Declan Kavanagh (review)
    • Abstract: Effeminate Years undertakes the task of exploring the extent to which the discourse of effeminacy shaped and was shaped by eighteenth-century political life, literary culture, and aesthetics, concluding that the landscape of gender ideology changed dramatically across a very short period between 1756 and 1774. Using the political writings of a number of men, including John Wilkes, Tobias Smollett, and Edmund Burke, Effeminate Years locates the discourse of effeminacy within the development of ideas about the political subject and modern Western ideas about liberty and freedom. In focusing on political life, the text adds to a particularly vibrant body of scholarship on eighteenth-century masculinities that centers ... Read More

  • Conjugal Misconduct: Defying Marriage Law in the Twentieth-Century United
           States by William Kuby (review)
    • Abstract: The US marriage equality movement has injected new life into an old topic. In the 1980s white feminist settler scholars like Elaine Tyler May, Maureen E. Montgomery, and Karen Lystra examined the relationship between American culture and marriage and how matrimony structured the experiences of everyday Americans, particularly women. Historians of African American experience explored marriage to illuminate how it both creates, organizes, and gives meaning to racial categories. The emergence of the marriage equality movement in the 1990s revitalized the field, this time with historians more closely scrutinizing how the state used marriage to confer and withhold rights and benefits. Nancy Cott's 2000 Public Vows and ... Read More

  • Sissy! The Effeminate Paradox in Postwar US Literature and Culture by
           Harry Thomas (review)
    • Abstract: Harry Thomas's Sissy! The Effeminate Paradox in Postwar US Literature and Culture is an ambitious book that investigates the fascination with effeminate men in American culture since World War II. It looks at a number of case studies: effeminate prepubescent boys in the fiction of Carson McCullers and Truman Capote; effeminate men in Gore Vidal's The City and the Pillar and James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room; heterosexual women's fandom of Liberace and Edward of the Twilight series; effeminate gay men in depictions of the AIDS crisis, including Randy Shilts's And the Band Played On, Tony Kushner's Angels in America, and Sarah Schulman's Rat Bohemia; "sissy memoirs" of the late 1990s and early 2000s by Mark Doty, André ... • What Is Sexual History' by Jeffrey Weeks (review)
    • Abstract: Jeffrey Weeks is perfectly positioned to write a comprehensive history and analysis of the history of sexuality. He was an early activist and chronicler of the gay liberation movement in the UK. He trained as a sociologist, but his first books on sexology and the politics of the homosexual rights movements in Britain had a distinctly historical perspective. His first book on the history and regulation of sexuality in Britain from 1800 to the present came out in 1981, and several more volumes on the history of sexuality, gender, and sexual morality have followed. However, he has not lost touch with other activists and with their efforts to preserve the memories and mementos of the last fifty years of political ... Read More

  • Oneida Utopia: A Community Searching for Human Happiness and Prosperity by
Anthony Wonderley, and: The Ministers' War: John W. Mears, the Oneida
Community, and the Crusade for Public Morality by Michael Doyle (review)
    • Abstract: The Ministers' War and Oneida Utopia both explore the history of Oneida Community, a group of religious Perfectionists who lived together in a system they called "bible communism" from 1848 to 1881 in rural upstate New York. In a departure from many other scholarly works about this socialist utopian community, both Doyle's and Wonderley's books are distinguished by their emphasis on historical actors other than the community's founder, John Humphrey Noyes. Noyes was a charismatic leader and voluminous writer whose influence loomed large over the Oneida Community and its story many years after the community voluntarily disbanded in 1881. In moving away from the long shadow of Noyes, Doyle and Wonderley add to the ... Read More
