  • Introduction: After Sovereignty
    • Abstract: Sovereignty is dead, long live sovereignty.Or so it seems in these late years of late capitalism, or in the early years of an already exhausted new millennium, years in which the rise of nationalisms past, populisms new, and unheralded, often confounding, pageantries of power beggar all description. If ever globalization seemed to pose alternatives to the enormities of the age of the sovereign nation-state, then it seems, as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri warned some time ago, that the "decline in sovereignty of nation-states … does not mean that sovereignty as such has declined."1 And, as if right on cue, Brexit looms with the dubious and self-debunking promise of security and unity tied to the ancient promise of ... • Sovereignty after Taxes in Shakespeare's History Plays
    • Abstract: What follows takes advantage of the ambiguity in this issue's organizing rubric. To be after sovereignty is, in the present article, less a matter of identifying postsovereign modes of inquiry and more a matter of examining the incompleteness, provisionality, struggle, and conflict suggested by the pursuit of sovereign authority. Dominant accounts of sovereignty understand the phenomenon to be unitary, pervasive, exclusive, and supreme within a bounded, settled territory and autonomous on a geopolitical landscape comprised of other similarly defined entities. Such a view of sovereign authority is frequently associated with the mid-seventeenth-century Peace of Westphalia as a kind of watershed moment consolidating ... Read More

  • Seizures of Sleep in Early Modern Literature
    • Abstract: Despite the many concrete distinctions he draws between sovereignty and biopower, Michel Foucault consistently uses the term prise, or seizure, to describe the various techniques of power that capture bodies in order to take, suppress, control, or foster life.1 In the following article, I take Foucault's characterization of premodern sovereignty and its ongoing transformations as a power of seizure as an occasion to reflect upon a particular form of physiological and affective constraint by which the living human body is involuntarily seized and stripped of the faculties that situate it in the world—the powers of deliberate will and agency, and the anchoring perceptions of consciousness. The experience to which I ... Read More

  • Sovereignty, Communitarianism, and the Shakespeare Option
    • Abstract: The paper that forms the basis of this article contributed to a 2016 MLA panel titled "After Sovereignty"; according to the accompanying description for the MLA conference program, the panel posed the following question: "How did the early moderns imagine individuality and collectivity in ways other than sovereignty'"1 This question seemed designed to spur respondents to move beyond analytical methodologies—often influenced by Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben—that privilege sovereignty as a conceptual category.2 The question posed by the panel invited us to seek out and analyze forms of subjectivity and collectivity that existed in early modern England separate from the exercise and effects of sovereign power. In ... • Forms of Governmentality in The Alchemist
    • Abstract: The concept of sovereignty captures the imagination of early modernists because it addresses the historical reality of centralized absolutist monarchies and provides a novel idiom for debating the perennially popular topic of secularization. In Carl Schmitt's influential formulation, the sovereign figure crystallizes the complex processes of early modern secularization as it transposes theological tropes into political ones.1 In Schmittian political theology, a monomaniacal monotheism underwrites the reign of the singular sovereign. It is easy enough to find tropes such as the singularity of the sovereign exception and the indivisibility of the sovereign decision inscribed in the cultural work of the early modern ... Read More

  • Friendship, Sovereignty, and Sexuality in Katherine Philips's Poetry
    • Abstract: This article examines the tense, contradictory relationships among friendship, sovereignty, and sexuality—especially masochistic sexuality—in the poetry of Katherine Philips. Philips's more optimistic poems suggest that the union achieved in friendship undoes self-sovereignty, but only so that friends might assume other, more valuable sovereignties familiar to friendship discourse. Through their union, friends might free themselves from the limits of ordinary, bounded embodiment, from the desire for power, or from the sting of death. Yet these familiar sovereignties also enable a less familiar, more flexible erotic experience that is masochistic in that the speaker relinquishes the project of mastery for the sake ... Read More

  • Mediating Sovereignty in Thomas Hobbes and Margaret Cavendish
    • Abstract: Then the Emperess asked them, Whether by their sensitive perceptions they could observe the interior corporeal, figurative motions both of Vegetables and Minerals' They answer'd, That their senses could perceive them after they were produced, but not before; Nevertheless, said they, although the interior, figurative motions of natural Creatures are not subject to the exterior, animal, sensitive perceptions, yet by their rational perception they may judg of them, and of their productions if they be regular.Questions about natural philosophy and science appear throughout Margaret Cavendish's romance, The Description of a New Blazing World (1666). All of these references serve to some extent as fictional forays into ... Read More

  • Michel Foucault and Digger Biopolitics
    • Abstract: I would say that one of the first great forms of revolt in the West was mysticism. All the bastions of resistance to the authority of the Scriptures, to mediation by the pastor, were developed either in convents or outside convents by the secular population. When one sees that these experiences, these spiritual movements have very often been used as attire, vocabulary, but even more so as ways of being, and ways of supporting the hopes expressed by the struggle that we can define as economic, popular, and in Marxist terms as the struggle between the classes, I think we have here something that is quite fundamental. In his series of lectures delivered at the Collège de France in 1975–76, published in 1997 under the ... • Epilogue: The Solecism of Power
    • Abstract: The title of this brief epilogue is taken from Francis Bacon's essay "Of Empire." Bacon's essay begins with a discussion of the mindsets of princes, with Bacon developing the position that the greatest difficulty princes face lies in their propensity to hold contradictory desires without fully recognizing it. After several paragraphs of analysis, Bacon concludes the opening section with the following sentence: "it is the solecism of power, to think to command the end, and yet not to endure the mean."1 Three things stand out about this statement, which serves less as a conclusion than a profound aphorism about the nature and limitations of sovereignty. First, Bacon places the mindset of princes in the broader ... Read More

  • After Sovereignty/After Virtue
    • Abstract: In these lines, the novitiate Isabella, advocating to Angelo on behalf of Claudio, draws on the bloody decorum of the kitchen in order to present her brother as an animal sacrifice that is not yet "of season" for temple service. The passage is ripe with many of the issues raised in this special issue: for instance, Isabella's use of the word "minister" in a quasi-liturgical context recasts the sovereign power of the state over life and death as a form of pastoral care, the very transformation explored by Jennifer R. Rust in her article on conduct and counterconduct communities in Michel Foucault and Ben Jonson. Whereas Rust would focus here on the term "ministry," David Glimp might call our attention instead to ... Read More

  • Recent Studies in the English Renaissance
    • Abstract: As I delved into the proliferating books received from SEL for this review, I found myself recalling the pyramid of axioms from my early Catholic-school education: knowledge is good, attentiveness is better, humility is best. The impressive range of the past year's work in early modern studies—excluding for the most part scholarship on dramatic literature—prompted sobering reminders of the challenge built into the omnibus review's dual mission to give an overview of recent scholarship and indicate areas of greatest interest, with attention to methodological and topical trends. Facing this challenge, I wished for a slightly different template, something closer to the format the New York Times uses for its annual ... Read More
