  • Subjective Social Class and Subjective Well-Being among College Students:
The Mitigating Roles of Self-Esteem and Critical Consciousness
    • Abstract: Social class is an essential cultural construct that affects human development, physical and mental health, and overall well-being (Liu et al., 2004a; American Psychological Association Task Force on Socioeconomic Status, 2007). It is also an important aspect of diversity that affects the experiences of college students—along with gender, race, sexual orientation, and other aspects of culture—especially given that the sociocultural context of college campuses makes social class more salient for students (Jones & McEwen, 2000). Specifically, social class influences how students perceive and experience the world (Ostrove & Cole, 2003; Seider & Aries, 2007), it shapes their decisions (Massey, Gross, & Eggers, 1991) ... • Can Text Message Nudges Improve Academic Outcomes in College' Evidence
           from a West Virginia Initiative
    • Abstract: While college enrollment has increased substantially over the past few decades, the total share of Americans with a college degree is essentially unchanged since 1980 and socioeconomic inequalities in college completion have widened over time (Aud et al., 2013; Bailey & Dynarski, 2012; Bound, Lovenheim, & Turner, 2010). These gaps in college success persist even after controlling for students' academic achievement (Belley & Lochner, 2007; Kena et al., 2015; Long & Mabel, 2012). There are also considerable geographic gaps in college attainment. Students from rural areas are more likely than their non-rural peers to come from lower-income families and, even after accounting for family income and academic preparation ... Read More

  • Lifting While We Climb: Undergraduate Students of Color Communal Uplift
and Promotion of College-Going within Their Communities
    • Abstract: Researchers have attributed gaps in access to college knowledge1 to students and their families, describing their experiences from a deficit perspective (Espino, 2014). In doing so, researchers have ignored structural barriers, or the ways in which institutions reproduce limited access to college-going cultural capital (Espino, 2014). "College-going" is a term used throughout the current publication to describe an environment or orientation that contributes to the development of a college-going habitus, which is connected to my use of social reproduction theory. Racially and ethnically underrepresented students, in particular, often experience intersecting barriers in accessing college-going knowledge. Barriers ... Read More

  • Negotiating Place and Gender: Appalachian Women's Postsecondary Transition
           Experiences
    • Abstract: Two decades ago, Eller (1999, p. ix) argued, "No other region of the United States … plays the role of the 'other America' quite so persistently as Appalachia." West Virginia has been painted in the popular media as a homogenous and "backward" place, home to "hillbillies," "pillbillies," and "racist rednecks," and is often characterized in the American mindset as "other." In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, when 69% of West Virginia voters supported Donald Trump, these constructions have taken on increased prevalence and significance, further relegating the people who inhabit the state to the margins of society (National Public Radio, 2016). This exclusion includes both social and economic forms.West ... Read More

  • Possible Selves and Higher Education: New Interdisciplinary Insights ed.
by Holly Henderson, Jacqueline Stevenson, and Ann-Marie Bathmaker (review)

    • Abstract: Three decades ago, Markus and Nurius (1986) proposed an influential concept they termed Possible Selves. These include the selves that we expect to become (ideal selves), the selves that we are able to become (actual selves), and the selves that we are afraid of becoming (ought to selves). This model leads us to connect our lives with our imagined world and our past experience, and motivates us to rethink our lives in a new way. Although the concept of possible selves "…has its origins in the field of social psychology" (p. 2), it has long been researched as a psychological concept, with less concern about its social aspects. To fill this gap, this volume offers theorization about possible selves from a ... Read More

  • The Assault on American Excellence by Anthony Kronman (review)
    • Abstract: Elite American colleges and universities have misguidedly adopted the egalitarian concerns of law and politics, weakening their own aristocratic purpose of discerning and cultivating human excellence (not merely scholarly or vocational achievement), and, ironically, robbing the Republic of just the kind of independent-minded citizens who would strengthen democratic life. Or so, at least, says Anthony Kronman. To the library of whither higher education tracts, Kronman—dean of Yale Law School 1994–2004—adds The Assault on American Excellence, a sequel of sorts to his Education's End: Why Our Colleges and Universities Have Given Up on the Meaning of Life (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2007). • Knowledge, Power, and Academic Freedom by Joan Wallach Scott (review)
    • Abstract: Knowledge, Power, and Academic Freedom by Joan Wallach Scott grapples in essay format with the topic of academic freedom. Unapologetic, Scott clearly articulates the various nuances surrounding the discussion of free inquiry. This is a timely, engrossing book that peels back the layers of the topic. The essays point out the "tensions, paradoxes and contradictions" in relation to academic freedom while challenging the reader to question feasibility of past, present, and future educational environment's inclusivity of free inquiry (p. 1). Scott explores academic freedom in the historical context of the definition of the term and in relationship to power, civility, and free speech within various social structures. The ... Read More

and Sustainable Scholarly Practice by Dannelle D. Stevens (review)
    • Abstract: Writing and publishing are crucial to the development of a successful academic career. Whereas writing and publishing are essential skills in academia today, they are seldom taught explicitly in graduate school. Write More, Publish More, Stress Less! • Unequal Higher Education: Wealth, Status, and Student Opportunity by
Barrett J. Taylor and Brendan Cantwell (review)
    • Abstract: In the current market-driven higher education system, the race to elite status has created competition for institutions to fill seats and acquire large sums of revenue (Marginson, 2006). In this book, Barrett J. Taylor and Brandan Cantwell cast a critical light on the conditions of the unequal higher education system. Unequal Higher Education: Wealth, Status, and Student Opportunity, discusses both the historical and theoretical foundations that have created today's competitive institutional hierarchy and the role that universities, states, and policy makers have in reversing these trends. The first portion of the book focuses on orienting the reader to the current context in which institutions operate, by ... • Living on Campus: An Architectural History of the American Dormitory by
           Carla Yanni (review)
    • Abstract: Though many readers of this review view the residence hall through the lens of professional practice, it takes a book like Carla Yanni's wonderful Living on Campus to wipe that lens clean of so much additional, accumulated haze: contemporary myths and propaganda, our own memories of formative experiences in residence halls and, perhaps most provocatively for the field, the ideologies and interests driving the incorporation of auxiliary services such as housing as an essential part of the "college experience". By bringing historical depth and an interdisciplinary sensitivity to the evolution of dormitories on campus, Yanni's elegant study will challenge scholars and practitioners to question their working ... • Reimagining the Study of Higher Education: Generous Thinking, Chaos, and
Order in a Low Consensus Field
    • Abstract: [2019 ASHE Presidential Address]Hundreds of thousands of graduate students around the world will complete their degrees in 2020. Tens of thousands of them will begin work as faculty or administrators in postsecondary institutions. If all goes well for a number of them—and the institutions that hire them—they are likely to retire sometime around the year 2060. Whatever the sector may look like in 2060, let's assume there is still some fraction of young adults that will begin postsecondary education that year. If there is still any such thing as a bachelor's degree, and people who complete it in five years, give or take, many of those young adults who enter in 2060 will celebrate their 50th reunions in the year 2115. ... • An Exploration of Actionable Insights Regarding College Students with
Autism: A Review of the Literature
    • Abstract: A large and growing population of students with autism is increasingly pursuing higher education. Yet, the field has a remarkably small literature base from which to glean actionable insights that might enhance postsecondary success for this population. Our examination of 13,000 items published in sixteen journals over a sixteen-year period revealed only 21 articles on the topic; none were published in mainstream higher education journals. Our explication of this literature maps the contours of the emerging body of literature on college students with autism, uncovers problematic patterns within that literature, identifies important questions that remain unanswered, and provides explicit guidance for future research ... • From Equity and Enlightenment to Entrepreneurialism: An HSI's Pursuit of
"Tier-One" Status in the Neoliberal Era
    • Abstract: As public funding for higher education decreases in most states, many universities are striving to raise their status as research-intensive institutions, aiming to capitalize on increased state funding, more research grants, and the prestige that comes with them. This is particularly evident in Texas, where the legislature in 2010 presented a competitive challenge to its state universities to achieve tier-one status (Hamilton, 2010). Based on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, "tier-one" denotes "schools that receive at least $100 million each year in research grants have selective admissions and low student-faculty ratios and competitive faculty salaries" (Texas Tribune, n. d., ¶ 2). ... • "We're Caught In Between Two Systems": Exploring the Complexity of Dual
           Credit Implementation
    • Abstract: We're just in both worlds. I think that's the odd thing about dual credit … They haven't really figured out our role. I think for both systems, not just high school side or college. It's both. We're just kind of dead in the middle, and nobody understands exactly what it is that we do.Rigorous academic preparation is a key predictor of postsecondary outcomes (Adelman, 2006), and is positively associated with grade point average, time-to-degree, and persistence (D'Amico & Dika, 2013; Farruggia, Bottoms, Leighton, Wellman, & Moss, in press; Long, Iatarola, & Conger, 2008). Unfortunately, academic under-preparation is widespread among first year college students (Venezia & Jaeger, 2013). For example, Woods, Park, Hu ... Read More

  • What Do We Know About Campus Sexual Violence' A Content Analysis of 10
           Years of Research
    • Abstract: Over the past several years, issues of sexual violence have received increased attention in higher education, commanding the attention of a variety of stakeholders including students and parents; policy-makers (on and off campus); and faculty, staff, and administrators, among others. Research on campus sexual violence has grown exponentially over the past several decades, yet a review of the literature indicates most of this research remains siloed in individual disciplines and centers cisgender heterosexual white women (Harris & Linder, 2017).Power and domination are the root causes of sexual violence (Deer, 2015; Harris & Linder, 2017; Hong, 2017), yet most educational programs and research practices fail to ... • The Cost of Caring: An Arts-Based Phenomenological Analysis of Secondary
Traumatic Stress in College Student Affairs
    • Abstract: Reports of traumatic experiences faced by college students have increased in recent years, including increased reports of severe mental health episodes (Locke & Stauffer, 2015), sexual violence (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network, 2016), hate crimes (U.S. Department of Education, 2016), and housing insecurity (Sackett, 2015). Student affairs professionals are often called on to act in trauma support capacities due to their day-to-day proximity to students on campuses with resource-strapped counseling centers (Lynch & Glass, 2018). Reynolds (2010) underscored this trend, stating, "Student affairs professionals are frequently placed in the roles of helpers, and many students rely on them for compassion, support ... Read More

  • Neoliberal Consequence: Data-driven decision making and the subversion of
           student success efforts
    • Abstract: Student success and the associated measures have become key indicators for institutional quality, and the focus of accountability efforts across the landscape of United States higher education. The focus on student success has been, and continues to be, heavily influenced by national economic goals and associated policies; more especially federal legislation focused on enhancing U.S. competitiveness in global markets, and the mounting pressures for higher education institutions to produce highly skilled graduates to meet U.S. workforce needs (Ewell & Wellman, 2007; McCormick, Gonyea, & Kinzie, 2013). Considering these goals, legislators and institutional leaders have been tasked with getting students to and through ... Read More
