  • Marketing to International Students: Presentation of University Self in
           Geopolitical Space
    • Abstract: Amidst a public discourse in higher education policy circles across the world calling for greater internationalization, defined as increased "border crossing activities amidst a more or less persistence of national systems of higher education" (Teichler, 2004, p. 7; see also Stein, 2017; Tadaki & Tremewan 2013), many universities are marketing to international students. As universities project themselves to prospective students, they are enacting public performances to particular audiences (Goffman, 1959). In those performances, they are presenting images of themselves educationally, economically, and socially. At a time of widespread, market-based conceptions of knowledge and learning characterized as "academic ... Read More

  • Promoting the Attainment-to-Transfer Pathway: Effects of Transfer
           Associate Degree Policies Across States
    • Abstract: The transfer of credits from two-to four-year institutions can be a critical challenge for baccalaureate-seeking students who first enroll in community colleges. Although the odds of attaining a bachelor's degree are 2.5 times greater for students who successfully transfer all of their credits, only 58 percent of transfer students are found to do so (Monaghan & Attewell, 2015). On average, students lose 8.2 credits when transferring from community colleges, but as many as 20.9 percent of all students who transfer are unable to successfully transfer any credits to a four-year college (Simone, 2014). Notably, transfer students often lose credits when their college-level courses are not deemed acceptable by their ... Read More

  • Incentivizing Longitudinal Survey Research: The Impact of Mixing
Guaranteed and Non-guaranteed Incentives on Survey Response
    • Abstract: For years, research has been plagued by declining survey response rates (Dey, 1997; National Research Council, 2013; Sax, Gilmartin & Bryant, 2003). Such declines contribute both to smaller-than-desired samples as well as to non-response bias, the notion that survey respondents represent a biased self-selected sample. Further, low response rates may be particularly evident among college students, who represent a frequently surveyed population (Porter, Whitcomb, & Weitzer, 2004). Because small sample sizes and non-response bias affect our ability to make inferences to a larger population, survey researchers have tried a variety of approaches to increase response rates by incentivizing survey response. Some research ... • The Push and Pull of Social Gravity: How Peer Relationships Form Around an
           Undergraduate Science Lecture
    • Abstract: A small number of social connections, perhaps as few as two or three, can positively impact a student's campus engagement (Chamblis & Takacs, 2014) and performance in a course (Rizzuto, LeDoux, & Hatala, 2009). The importance of interaction among peers for learning is especially apparent in math and science where work is often completed in pairs or small groups (Callahan, 2008; Deslauriers, Schelew, & Wieman, 2011). When students interact to complete course tasks, they exhibit significant learning gains in comparison to students who work independently, especially in undergraduate courses like mathematics (Callahan, 2008) and physics (Brewe, Kramer, & Sawtelle, 2012) where the material is provided in an ordered ... • Personal and Institutional Predictors of Work-Life Balance among Women and
           Men Faculty of Color
    • Abstract: In recent years, the importance of recognizing faculty's need to balance work responsibilities with life commitments received yet another wave of national attention. In 2013, the American Council on Education (ACE) started its "National Challenge for Higher Education to Promote Faculty Work-Life Balance" campaign, focusing on the implementation of policies and practices that support a flexible academic workplace. As noted by ACE President Molly Corbett Broad, "We've found time and time again that flexible workplace policies make for happier, more committed faculty, which ultimately translates to better outcomes for our institutions and our students" (American Council on Education, 2013). The ACE initiative came ... Read More

  • Race-Related Activism: How Do Higher Education Diversity Professionals
           Respond'
    • Abstract: U.S. colleges and universities have witnessed an increase in race-related campus activism in the wake of highly publicized racial violence and the emergence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement (Rhoads, 2016; Wong, 2015; Wong & Green, 2016). In January of 2016, American Council of Education's (ACE) Center for Policy, Research, and Strategy conducted a Pulse Point Survey of college presidents, assessing how they were experiencing and thinking about the activism on their respective campuses. Almost half of the presidents serving at 4-year institutions indicated that their students had organized around their concerns about racial diversity, and approximately three quarters noted that high profile acts and issues off ... • Different, Difficult, and Local: A Review of Interdisciplinary Teaching
           Activities
    • Abstract: In this paper, we present a review of online, peer-reviewed articles on interdisciplinary teaching activities in higher education. The aim of the paper is to address a lacuna in the literature concerning concrete examples and empirical evidence of interdisciplinary teaching. As interdisciplinarity is a slippery term, which is reflected in the many alternative names and definitions constantly added to the field (Moran, 2010, p. 14), we employ, in the review, the widest possible definition of the term, namely "any form of dialogue or interaction between two or more disciplines" (Moran, 2010, p. 14). 'Teaching activities' are, in this setting, defined as formally structured activities planned by a teacher with the ... Read More

  • The Rediscovery of Teaching by Gert J. J. Biesta (review)
    • Abstract: Gert Biesta is a highly respected European philosopher of education who deserves to be better known in the United States. His recent book, The Rediscovery of Teaching (2017), the 4th book of a previous trilogy, could be said to play a similar role to that of John Dewey's Experience and Education (1938) in that it focuses upon the nature of teaching and its critical role in the schools of purportedly free societies. Moreover, both books were written rather late in their authors' careers, and as relatively short texts, they seem to serve well as accessible descriptions of their philosophies for readers not yet familiar with their earlier works. In addition, although both men wrote primarily about the education of ... Read More

  • Measuring Success: Testing, Grades, and the Future of College Admissions
ed. by Jack Buckley, Lynn Letukas, and Ben Wildavsky (review)
    • Abstract: The value and proper role of standardized tests in American higher education admissions processes has been vigorously debated for decades. Proponents and critics have disagreed about the use and fairness of the two most popular college admissions tests: the ACT and SAT. To further the discussion of standardized admissions testing, Jack Buckley, Lynn Letukas, and Ben Wildavsky edited Measuring Success: Testing, Grades, and the Future of College Admission, as a result of their shared "frustration with the fragmented and incomplete state of the literature around the contemporary debate on college admissions testing" (p. 2). In the Introduction chapter, "The Emergence of Standardized Testing and the Rise of ... Read More

  • A Fractured Profession: Commercialism and Conflict in Academic Science by
           David R. Johnson (review)
    • Abstract: Does commercialism impede upon academia' The book's author, David R. Johnson, Assistant Professor of Higher Education Leadership at the University of Nevada at Reno, noted, "We know remarkably little about commercial culture in the academic profession" (p. 6), and studied the prevalence of commercialism and its effects on highly esteemed American universities, from academic scientists' viewpoints. Specifically, he queried: "How does a commercially oriented reward system operate in the academic profession'" (p. 2).Methodologically, the author conducted a qualitative study in 2010, interviewing traditionalists, or "scientists [who] advance knowledge by sharing their discoveries with the scientific community. . . in ... • Engaging Images for Research, Pedagogy, and Practice ed. by Bridget Turner
Kelly and Carrie A. Kortegast (review)
    • Abstract: In Engaging Images for Research, Pedagogy, and Practice, Bridget Turner Kelly and Carrie A. Kortegast brought together a collection of essays that contribute to the scope of research on utilizing visual methods within higher education-based pedagogy and programming. Additionally, this anthology contributes to the broader context of implementing the use of technology within the fields of student affairs and teaching in higher education. According to the text, the term visual methods encompasses multiple education-and technology-based practices that utilize images and is said to contribute to "human sense-making" in that it "challenge[s] spoken or written texts by offering uniquely rich vantage points" that may not ...
