  • 28.3 Editorial Introduction: From Arizona to Oregon
    • Abstract: I begin writing my first introduction to an issue of Feminist Formations on a beautiful fall morning in Oregon, as the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red, and it’s clear that transitions are taking place all around us. I return to it a few weeks later, in Montreal for the 2016 National Women’s Studies Association conference, while many of us are deep in the process of collective mourning post-election. I’m thrilled to be assuming the editorship of what is considered by many to be a flagship journal within the field of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. But I’m reminded of the critical urgency of our work here and now, as we acknowledge the reality and consequences of a Donald Trump presidency. Many ... Read More

  • Beyond Symbolic Rape: The Insidious Trauma of Conquest in Marguerite
Duras’s The Lover and Eileen Chang’s “Lust, Caution”
    • Abstract: In outlining the pleasures and dangers of women’s sexual journeys, Marguerite Duras (1914–1996) and Eileen Chang (Zhang Ailing) (1920–1995) are fellow travelers, though the backgrounds and contexts for their writing are distinct. Duras was born in colonial Indochina (present-day Vietnam), and grew up in relative poverty. Chang lived much of her life in two colonial cities: Shanghai and Hong Kong, though she eventually moved to the United States after World War II. Of the same generation, Duras and Chang experienced the complex machinations of imperialism and the suffering of war, though they later went on to live in Western societies. The texts to be discussed—Duras’s novel The Lover (1984) and Chang’s short story ... • War, Healing, and Trauma: Reading the Feminine Aesthetics and Politics in
           Rubaiyat Hossain’s Meherjaan
    • Abstract: The release of Rubaiyat Hossain’s 2011 film, Meherjaan, a story about loving the Other set amidst the Bangladesh independence war, met with masculinist responses in Bangladesh from audiences across generations and political persuasions. These responses hint at a national anxiety in grappling with the “politics of truth” in regard to the 1971 War of Liberation, which has come to occupy a sacrosanct space within the national imaginary in Bangladesh (Alamgir and D’Costa 2011).1 In this paper, I explore the anxieties underlying the gendered responses to Meherjaan, particularly with regard to the relationship of nation to gender and sexuality, and to the (im)possibility of loving the Other. I explore these themes on ... Read More

  • The Other Third Shift?: Women’s Emotion Work in Their Sexual
           Relationships
    • Abstract: Feminist psychologists and sociologists have both devoted much attention to the problem of gender inequalities. While gender equity has made significant strides in public realms (e.g., women having access to education and traditionally male jobs), women have achieved far less progress in the private realms (England 2010). Famed sociologist Arlie Hochschild (1989) argued in her classic, The Second Shift, that women in the workforce faced a burden not only of their “first shift,” that is, working an eight-hour day outside of the home, but also the “second shift”: eight hours of domestic labor once they got home. Further, persistent gender essentialism, or the belief in men and women as fundamentally different, has ... Read More

  • Understanding the Complexities of Contemporary Feminist Activism: How the
Lives of Older Women Activists Contest the Waves Narrative
    • Abstract: On a rainy Thursday in September 2013, we sat listening to “Sam,” an intelligent, energetic, and politically savvy 69-year-old woman, as she shared the story of her journey with activism with us. A recently retired scholar, feminist, and grandmother, Sam was one of the co-chairs of the Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN). GRAN is a Canadian network of older women that then depicted itself as mobilizing in solidarity with grandmothers from sub-Saharan Africa who had lost their children to HIV/AIDS and were caring for their families with inadequate resources and tremendous insecurity. In the few years since her retirement, Sam had spent many hours leading GRAN, exerting pressure on the Canadian government and ... Read More

    • Abstract: Louis Althusser (1971) views education as one of the main state institutions through which the modern state controls the mindsets of its people. Within Literacy and Development Studies, education is regarded as a key instrument for achieving equitable relations among diverse social groups, particularly between men and women (Stromquist 2006). State education in Pakistan has always been strictly controlled by the governmental policies to harmonize people divided by languages, cultures, ethnicities, and religious sects as well as to construct a masculinist nationalist identity as a means of uniting these diverse groups. Neelum Durrani’s (2008) study highlights the significance of education for the development of ... Read More

  • Discourses of Shari‘a Law and Muslim Women: A Critical Reflection on
           Sharia in Canada
    • Abstract: Many women’s rights organizations and the media, particularly in the post-9/11 environment, represent shari‘a law as detrimental to the rights of Muslim women. Within such representation, religious laws are portrayed in opposition to civil laws, with the former constituted as dangerous and the latter as prudent and efficacious in securing women’s rights. This portrayal is potently presented in the two-part documentary Sharia in Canada, which the National Film Board of Canada released in 2005. The documentary was produced in the midst of a moral panic that emerged following the 2003 announcement by Ontario’s Islamic Institute of Civil Justice (IICJ) that, under the Ontario Arbitration Act, S.O. 1991, Muslims could ... • Decolonizing Patent Law: Postcolonial Technoscience and Indigenous
           Knowledge in South Africa
    • Abstract: Hoodia gordonii is one of several succulent plants within the Hoodia species known for generations by Indigenous San peoples as !Xhoba for a variety of uses to stave off hunger and increase energy (Wynberg 2004). Hoodia became the subject of political controversy when, in 1998, South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) obtained patent rights to Hoodia’s chemical compositions. CSIR primarily focused on Hoodia gordonii, which I refer to as Hoodia for short or by its San name, !Xhoba. CSIR quickly partnered with Phytopharm, a UK biotechnology firm, as well as global pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and eventually Unilever, to develop Hoodia for global commercialization and sale as an ... • “On the book of my body”: Women, Power, and “Tattoo
           Culture”
    • Abstract: In a story in the New York Times about men’s aggressive sexual advances toward women in an oil boomtown in North Dakota, a local woman is quoted specifically expressing no interest in these men’s offensive offers: “I said I make more money doing my job than degrading myself to do that” (Eligon 2013). Yet she is identified as a tattoo artist, and her ink and piercings are described, subtly or not so subtly undermining her authority. These gratuitous details are not mirrored by the descriptions of the perpetrators, the men on the make. More recently, Nicolas Kristof, on the Times editorial page, shot back at commenters on an earlier column in which he had described an impoverished, struggling mother of a ... Read More

  • Queening/Queering Mexicanidad: Lucha Reyes and the Canción Ranchera
    • Abstract: In 1939, director Raúl de Anda released Con los Dorados de Villa (With Villa’s Veterans), starring Pedro Armendáriz, Susana Cora, and Domingo Soler and co-starring Lucha Reyes. Reyes played the character Adela, a soldadera—a female soldier of the Mexican Revolution. Of the nine films she appeared in during her lifetime, Reyes’s interpretation of Adela would be her most significant cinematic role. In this and other comedia ranchera (ranch comedy) films, Reyes received little acclaim for her acting skills; instead it was her evocative and astounding performance of the canción ranchera (country or rural song) that garnered the most public attention. Even then, critics’ praise was limited and recognition was fleeting. ... Read More

  • Neocolonial Biopolitics in Southern Arizona: Lessons Learned from the SB
           1070 Boycott
    • Abstract: In April of 2010, in response to Arizona Senate Bill (SB) 1070, a nationwide boycott of Arizona was implemented by local and national non-profits, grassroots groups, celebrities, musicians, politicians, activists and other stakeholders.1 The general thought was that by hitting Arizona in its economic gut, the Arizona state legislature would be forced to rescind SB 1070 and to confront the racist social conditions—such as racial profiling and extralegal detention—leading to the generation of SB 1070 in the first place. Spearheaded by grassroots activist groups in Southern Arizona such as PUENTE Arizona—a Phoenix-based organization dedicated to community organizing, coalition building, and migrant social justice—the ... • Plastic Bodies: Sex Hormones and Menstrual Suppression in Brazil by Emilia
           Sanabria (review)
    • Abstract: Grounded in an ethically rigorous ethnographic account of the widespread administration of hormone regimes to manage menstruation and fertility among racially and socioeconomically diverse populations of Brazil’s northeastern Bahia region, Emilia Sanabria’s Plastic Bodies: Sex Hormones and Menstrual Suppression in Brazil promises a uniquely valuable contribution to the concerns that, well beyond the parameters of geography and case specificity, have animated scholars working at the nexus of feminist science studies, trans studies, biopolitical theory, and new materialisms in recent years.Sanabria’s fieldwork orbits the empire of Dr. Elsimar Coutinho, “a polemical and highly mediatized doctor” who has, with much ... • Wrapped in the Flag of Israel: Mizrahi Single Mothers and Bureaucratic
           Torture by Smadar Lavie (review)
    • Abstract: The book Wrapped in the Flag of Israel: Mizrahi Single Mothers and Bureaucratic Torture represents its author, Smadar Lavie, and her milieu, as the personal becomes the political and the subject of a case study in a scenario of transnational capital and war. Lavie maps and historicizes the apparatus of the Israeli state from the perspective of one of the vulnerable populations it dominates—Mizrahi women, single mothers who must fight for meager welfare checks and benefits from a state that deals in what Lavie calls “bureaucratic torture”: the somatic transposition of social maltreatment to emotional and physical pain. As she explains, Lavie studies her own position in her investigation and research for the book ... Read More

  • Transnational Feminism in the United States: Knowledge, Ethics, and Power
           by Leela Fernandes (review)
    • Abstract: As an activist and academic, I have had numerous debates around women’s rights and empowerment. For those who prioritize social justice ideals, it becomes our duty to ask important questions about women’s rights, access, and accessibility. Within a predominantly Western realm, this is further complicated when we begin to discuss how these ideas impact women in different countries. My expertise is often called upon to answer and consider matters of “oppressive regimes” on women of color overseas, for example, how veiling, violence, and religion are seen to impact these women. Often these conversations are under the guise of a concerned feminist debate around transnational issues, but these conversations always leave ... Read More

  • Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity by Robert Jensen
           (review)
    • Abstract: In Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity, Robert Jensen analyzes contemporary mainstream (most commonly rented or purchased) heterosexual pornography as one key method of domination in the US patriarchal system of oppression, along with its effects on both men and women. Jensen argues that pornography has normalized and mainstreamed a particular conception of sex as both violent and degrading. He details how mechanisms of power are eroticized and unchallenged, where men dominate, and women’s sexuality is objectified and commodified. Jensen labels and rejects systems of oppression as anti-human and inconsistent with general principles of justice. He demonstrates how pornography reinforces patriarchy ... Read More
