  • Editorial Introduction
    • Abstract: In this latest issue of Feminist Formations, we are excited to feature a dossier on Lynne Huffer's Are the Lips a Grave' A Queer Feminist on the Ethics of Sex, cocurated by Meridith Kruse and David A. Rubin. Huffer's scholarly work, as Kruse and Rubin explain, imagines queer feminism as a significant space from which to engage current ethical, social, political questions and challenges. Following Huffer, Kruse and Rubin "define queer feminism as an expansive project that seeks to hold the critique of biopolitical normalization and structural violence together with a vision of ethical remaking." This timely dossier includes writings by Shannon Winnubst, Angela Willey, Kent Brintnall, Stephen Seely, Kyoo Lee, David ... Read More

  • Materializing "Family Pressure" among Taiwanese Queer Women
    • Abstract: Chinese parents place more responsibilities on boys, so they are stricter with boys. Boys have pressure to continue the paternal line, girls have less pressure. So I think it is easier for lesbians than for gay men.1Huang Mama shared this opinion as we finished a lunch she had paid for at a café owned by one of her good friends, in the hills of New Taipei City. Although I fought to pay, Huang Mama insisted in a motherly kind of way, treating me as her guest and as one of "the children," close in age to her adult lesbian daughter. This motherly aura suffused Huang Mama's person and her interactions with me, from her rose-colored silk blouse buttoned at the neck, to the way she fussed over the details of my ... Read More

  • Lacerated Girls' Uniforms and What the Cuts May Engender
    • Abstract: She was riding the morning train to school when the middle-aged Japanese man came up behind her and slashed her traditional Korean uniform. She kept her mouth shut because she was afraid he would attack her more if she screamed. But the 11th-grader could not hide her terror as she described her experience on national television Wednesday. "I was so scared," she recalled. "I couldn't say anything" (Watanabe 1994).It was at the crowded Minami Koshigaya Station where An Misong, 17 years old, on her way home from school, felt someone touch her back in the crowded train. Fear came over her, then she heard the sound of a garment being torn behind her. She ran to the station bathroom but felt someone was following her. She ... Read More

  • Locating A Transborder Archive of Queer Chicana Feminist and Mexican
           Lesbian Feminist Art
    • Abstract: Queer US Chicana and Latina feminist activists and artists are members of the transborder publics that have collectively articulated and debated lesbian feminist political frameworks in Latin America since at least the 1980s, making them part of the transborder formation of Latin/a American lesbian feminism, or lesbofeminismo. Within the larger network of Latin/a American lesbian feminist encuentros (meetings), art-based encuentros are especially productive sites of transborder dialogues among US Latina and Latin American lesbian feminists. These encuentros enable exciting collaborations and cross-fertilizations in the realm of activism and art.In their 2014 anthology Translocalities/Translocalidades: Feminist ... Read More

  • Gendering Geography: Space Politics in Nepali Tīj
    • Abstract: Location of the Problem: Situating the Silence Tīj has become a central cultural metaphor in Nepal. In contemporary academic, popular, and journalistic discourse, it is invariably constructed as the idiom of Nepali woman. The leading daily, Gorkhapatra says "Nepali mahilā (woman) cherishes the festival of Tīj because Tīj is related to the māitī of Nepali mahilā" (P. Regmi 2011). Another national daily, Kantipur states that "myriad songs of the Tīj are hitting the market on the occasion of Haritālikā Tīj; the mahān (great) festival of Nepali mahilā" (L. Regmi 2009).Celebrated annually from bhādra, śukla dwitīyā to panćamī (mid-August to mid-September), married Nepali women are taken to their māita, the natal home ... Read More

  • Daring to Look: Women without "Faces" and Humanitarian Resentment
    • Abstract: In his book On Suicide Bombing (2007), Talal Asad examines post-9/11 shifts in the production of "terrorism" as an object of knowledge. Tracing the tautological movement of those arguments that assert a distinction between terrorism and war (in order to authorize the latter over and against the former), Asad notes that they tend to locate that distinction in the individual psyche of the terrorist versus that of the military member, subjects who supposedly have different motives to commit violence and are moreover differently affected by that commission. • Introduction
    • Abstract: The etymology of the noun "dossier" can be traced to the French dossier, "bundle of papers," from the twelfth-century dos, meaning "back." Dos stems from the Vulgar Latin dossum, a variant of dorsum, an expletive for "back" or "backside." A dossier was originally so-called because the bundle bore a label on the back, or possibly from resemblance of the bulge in a mass of bundled papers to the curve of a back. Additionally, the Old French dossiere referred to the "back-strap" or "ridge strap" of a horse's harness. Both dorsum and dossiere are closely related to lordosis, "curvature of the spine," from modern Latin, from the Greek lordos, meaning "bent backwards," a word of uncertain origin, with possible cognates in ... • To Come Undone or Never to Have Been "Done" at All': A Sounding of
Lynne Huffer's Are the Lips a Grave'
    • Abstract: I originally wrote this essay for a session on the book at the National Women's Studies Association in November 2014. At that time, the Black Lives Matter movement was just coming to national and international attention, and I began the essay with the urgency of the epidemic of violence against young black bodies that continues to ravage the United States. Writing now just before the inauguration of Donald Trump as the President of the United States, my concerns in 2014 about systemic state violence against persons of color seem anemic. I am more convinced than ever that we all must theorize, write, read, and live through this singular touchstone of systemic violence against vulnerable populations, especially as ... Read More

  • Lesbians, Life, and Antiracist Ethics
    • Abstract: I was delighted to be asked to offer commentary on Are the Lips a Grave'—I read the book as soon as it came out, and as soon as I read it, I fell in love with it. I love the form of the book both for this book—on queer feminism—and as a model for feminist scholarship. It is deeply personal in ways that are made so clearly and viscerally relevant. It is at once rigorously critical and devotedly generous. It is creative in its conceptualization and archival breadth, and it richly explores so many narrative resources for thinking queer feminism—that is, queer feminism as something more than an amalgamation of the queer and the feminist. This is one of those books we needed; a book that we hungered for long before it ... Read More

  • Psychoanalysis's Tragedy
    • Abstract: What is the place of the tragic in queer theory' Has queer theory ever given tragedy a place at the table, alongside performative resignifications, micro-resistances, and novel corporeal economies' And what would a politics that embraces the tragic fully and forthrightly look like'While arguing that queer theory has never given Michel Foucault's History of Madness its proper place, and that this failure has prevented it from recognizing the arranged marriage between Freud and Foucault as both theoretically unsound and politically disastrous, Lynne Huffer frequently invokes the tragic dimensions of subjectivity, contending they are central to Madness as well as to the ethics of eros she develops in conversation with ... • Sexual Difference in/and the Queer beyond of Ethics
    • Abstract: In her recent book, Are the Lips a Grave' A Queer Feminist on the Ethics of Sex, Lynne Huffer offers a daring call for a reconsideration of the rifts between feminist and queer theory in order to develop a "queer feminist ethics of eros" (Huffer 2013, 44). Arguing that sexual ethics lies at the fractured nexus between feminist and queer theory, Huffer seeks both to restore "a claim to an ethical queer feminism" and to transfigure ethics as "erotic living" (22). This project is clearly staged in the book's titular chapter, which provocatively brings together Michel Foucault's and Luce Irigaray's respective reformulations of sexual ethics with the so-called antisocial queer theory of Leo Bersani and Janet Halley. • Toward a Moral Theory of Sex, Its Lipkinkiness: On Oral, Labial, Dental
           Caesura, Fermata, Aria
    • Abstract: I noticed that if I am sad or in danger or preoccupied by some serious undertaking, I sleep deeply and eat voraciously. But if I am full of joy, I do not eat or sleep.Literature is the space where language becomes an image of itself, where language speaks as an image of words. What would happen—to Blanchot, to literature, to theory—if the feminine opened up, if the feminine became feminist, if Eurydice and the mother began speaking to each other'Gasp, cough, throw up, bite, lick, suck, spit, sip, slurp, nibble, mumble, babble, swear, scream … sexily or not: as I, or you, breathe, eat, and speak, sometimes with our mouth full, for life in any case, the oral-labial-dental zone of this body that can be and do many ... • "This Kinky Practice of Freedom": On Lips, Restoring Rifts, and Huffer's
           Queer Feminist Ethics of Eros
    • Abstract: In Are the Lips a Grave' (2013), Lynne Huffer reworks Leo Bersani's infamous question about homosexual self-shattering—"Is the Rectum a Grave'" (1987)—into an occasion for theorizing the desubjectivating possibilities of a queer feminist ethics of eros. Heterotopian, not utopian; nonredemptive, but attentive to harms; restorative (in a rift-restoring sense), not reparative; promiscuous, and therefore both relational (Huffer 2013, 32) and nonrelational (48) at the same time—"this kinky practice of freedom," as Huffer calls it (2013, 32), at once builds on and departs from the so-called antisocial thesis in queer theory (Caserio 2006), particularly as Janet Halley formulates it in Spit Decisions: How and Why to Take ... • Rethinking Sexual Literacy in the Comp Classroom: Huffer, Alexander,
           Foucault
    • Abstract: In 2008, Jonathan Alexander, a leading scholar in Queer Composition, published the influential book Literacy, Sexuality, Pedagogy: Theory and Practice for Composition Studies. Given the widespread tendency among scholars of First Year Writing to avoid significant contact with queer theory, I welcomed Alexander's risky, promiscuous text with open arms. Finally, I cheered, a comp scholar who is not afraid to venture outside the traditional boundaries of our field to consider how the insights of queer theory can enliven our work. Glancing at the table of contents for Literacy, Sexuality, Pedagogy, it seemed this text had the potential to fulfill my hope for such courageous crossings with chapter titles such as ... Read More

  • Ethics/Reading/Sex: Toward a New Historical Reading Practice'
    • Abstract: While I am tempted to begin with the book's provocative title and talk about the lips and the grave, the book's subtitle, "A Queer Feminist on the Ethics of Sex," will instead be the focus of my response. I will begin by trying to understand what this ethics is. This ethics of sex in Lynne Huffer's text has two aspects that I would like to highlight in this response. First, I elaborate on Huffer's ethics of sex as a practice of reading, and, second, I show how such a practice is one of spatializing her ethical concerns to uncover a fissured ground upon which queer-feminist politics and a certain practice of history both come alive. This practice of ethical reading is, in Huffer's evocative phrase, "apocryphal" ... • Recursive, Restorative, Respite
    • Abstract: What a joy it has been to engage these reflections on my work. Reading the commentaries in this dossier feels like returning to old friends, picking up dropped threads and recommitting to the thing we are making together. I am deeply grateful to Meridith Kruse and David Rubin for curating these commentaries, to Feminist Formations for publishing them in its pages, and to all my interlocutors for their careful, fervent, and inventive engagements. I cannot do justice to the detail of these responses, but I hope the reverberation of my thought with theirs will be apparent to those who read this. Importantly, I want to place this recursive movement under the sign of ethics, as an ethical practice of writing and ... Read More

  • Against Citizenship: The Violence of the Normative by Amy L. Brandzel
           (review)
    • Abstract: At the center of Against Citizenship is a question that many scholars and activists have examined: how does advocacy for inclusion in citizenship reproduce the violences of the terms of citizenship itself' Brandzel sheds new light on this inquiry through a mobilization of critical paradigms from several radical intellectual traditions and the use of particularly demanding sites of investigation. The result is a book that exposes some of the most straining tensions these questions place on social movements seeking transformation. As Brandzel describes in the preface, many scholars who take up the critique of inclusion-focused efforts by activists undertake that critique aggressively, taking precious little time to ... • Asegi Stories: Cherokee Queer and Two-Spirit Memory by Qwo-Li Driskill
           (review)
    • Abstract: In this stunning book, author Qwo-Li Driskill produces a tour-de-force with each page where readers engage with Cherokee-specific gender traditions that question the Western, settler colonial narratives that assume a binary, Christian gender configuration that limits Indigenous and Cherokee beliefs about "difference" in terms of body, performance, and life roles. Asegi Stories is the first tribally specific account of Two-Spirit identity, memory, and decolonization. Driskill's work is an intervention into both Native studies and queer studies. Using the metaphor of a double-wall basket, readers are exposed to the many different "splints" or pieces that must be re-woven together from multiple identities to form one ... Read More
