  • 29.2 Editorial Introduction
    • Abstract: I want to write something hopeful and healing, but these have been such difficult days . . .Since our last issue of Feminist Formations, white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, spreading hate, terror, and violence. A white nationalist drove into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing Heather Heyer, and injuring more than thirty people. The police killed Jordan Edwards, a Black 15-year-old in the passenger seat of a vehicle driving away from a party. The US military dropped the so-called "Mother of All Bombs"—the largest non-nuclear device ever deployed in combat—in Afghanistan. Republicans in the US voted to defund the Affordable Care Act, which will leave millions of people without health insurance. An ... Read More

  • Aligned Across Difference: Structural Injustice, Sex Work, and Human
           Trafficking
    • Abstract: Feminist debates surrounding sex work and human trafficking are notoriously contentious, with a binary approach that sees pro-sex work and anti-human trafficking ideologies as incompatible. This article enters the debate among feminists working to end sexual violence, address human trafficking, and ensure the rights and agency of sex workers. These debates have pitted feminist against feminist as they try to create more livable lives for people globally. The stakes are high because the manifestations of this conflict have become entrenched in legislation, incarceration, and deportation—structures that affect real people's material conditions and lived experiences. The battle lines are drawn on these bodies ... Read More

  • Nicki Minaj and the Changing Politics of Hip-Hop: Real Blackness, Real
           Bodies, Real Feminism'
    • Abstract: Perhaps the most influential female rapper in history, Nicki Minaj has set records in her music sales, chart-topping singles, social media usage, and overall net worth (Staples 2012). Minaj had a quiet entrance to the hip-hop world in 2007, but by 2012 she had two best-selling albums and seven singles simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100, bringing her to the pinnacle of media exposure. Although everyone is talking about Nicki Minaj, few agree on the meaning of her music and performance. Is she talented and taking hip-hop in a new direction or simply a bubble-gum version of more authentic hip-hop' Is her music potentially feminist, or is she simply drawing on historical narratives of black womanhood that ... • "I'm a Motherfuckin' Monster!": Play, Perversity, and Performance of Nicki
           Minaj
    • Abstract: Amid images of lynched women, wealthy black men, and the uncomfortable sounds of low-fidelity drum kicks and eerily pitch-shifted voices, rapper Onika "Nicki Minaj" Maraj delivers arguably one of the most provocative performances in the music video for Kanye West's 2010 single "Monster." In a deceptively simple torture scene between her binary identities, the pink-wig-white-dress-wearing "Barbie" Minaj is hooded and tied to a chair while a stylized vampire/dominatrix Minaj holds a whip and abuses her victim. Positioning herself on all fours, she thrusts her buttocks at the camera as she shouts that she is a motherfucking monster (West et al. 2010). Inhabiting what literary critic Jenny Sharpe calls the "crevices ... Read More

  • Feminine Subjects and the Emasculated State: Performances of Gender in
           Pakistan's Red Mosque Movement
    • Abstract: In December 2010, I visited the site of what used to be the largest religious seminary for girls in Pakistan, Jamia Hafsa. In 2007, the Jamia and its surrounding buildings became the site of a violent armed confrontation between the Pakistani Army and members of what came to be known as the Red Mosque movement. The week-long confrontation unfolded in an elite neighborhood in the capital city of Islamabad, was televised live, and left 100–200 men, women, and children dead. The confrontation was aptly termed "Operation Silence" by the Pakistani Army, and I was among the many Pakistanis who watched this spectacular and surreal battle unfold on television without knowing how to make sense of it. Three years later, I ... Read More

  • Discursive Presence through Group Anonymity: Ethnonational Belonging,
Gender, Sexuality, and Activism in the Republic of Armenia
    • Abstract: In this article I explore the multivalent queering of gendered belonging in an almost exclusively monoethnic, landlocked country of the (formerly Soviet) Republic of Armenia (RA). I focus on the political artistic activism of a women's group called Queering Yerevan Collective (QYC), because this Collective destabilizes variously guised normative gendered ideologies of hetero-reproductive belonging as part of their effort to disrupt habitual and uncritical perceptions of sociopolitical processes, thus creating alternative radicalizing spaces and discourses. Through their art interventions, the QYC members queer the habitual, redefining the term "queer" by "strip[ping] it of its label-oriented functions . . . us[ing] ... Read More

  • When Feminist Falls in Love with Queer: Dan Mei Culture as a Transnational
           Apparatus of Love
    • Abstract: For many Chinese queers, April 15, 2013 was a special day as the People's Republic of China welcomed the world's first openly homosexual government head, the (former) Prime Minister of Iceland, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and her wife for an official visit. Yet in its report of this monumental event, Network News Broadcast, the flagship program of China Central Television and the most authoritative voice of the party-state, not only censored the images of the Premier's wife, but also eliminated her entirely from the news story.1 he significance of this milestone visit to queer Chinese, by contrast, was heralded by numerous other media outlets, including major mouthpieces of the state, such as Xinhua News Agency,2 ... • Queering the Homeland: Chicanidad, Racialized Homophobia, and the
           Political Economy of Homopatriarchy
    • Abstract: "I am a turtle, wherever I go I carry home on my back."He felt an unease even before stepping foot on the blistering hot tarmac. He had traveled to Mexico numerous times before. Yet, this time felt different. Perhaps it had been too long, but Miguel2 no longer sensed an emotional attachment to the spaces he had been pressured into identifying as home. The smiles and hugs he once recognized with clarity were nothing more than cordial acts of respect. If the duration of time were any indication, it certainly showed on Miguel's young adult body: a few whiskers straining to form a mustache; the bulge of a bicep peeking out from under a sleeve. As a young adult male, Miguel was expected to be wildly successful ... Read More

  • Identity and Cross-Cultural Empathy: Writing to Sister Maryagnes Curran,
           O.S.F.
    • Abstract: What we do have together in the middle of this thing is a brush with solidarity, and that's real.As a non-Latina working in Latina/o Studies, questions about my identity have always hovered around my claims to knowledge. After two decades of teaching and publishing in the field, I continue to struggle with the possibility and desirability of cross-cultural identification.1 Critiques of identity politics have led to a variety of more fluid and contingent relations to identity—such as those theorized by Paula Moya, Linda Martín Alcoff, and other postpositivist realists—but unless we are to embrace an unrealistic sense of being "post-identity" (which would obscure the ways in which powers and privileges continue to ... • Antipolygamy Narratives after 9/11: Writing and Rewriting the Abduction of
           Elizabeth Smart
    • Abstract: In the early morning of June 4, 2002, Brian David Mitchell brazenly abducted 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart from her Salt Lake City bedroom at knifepoint. In the nine months that followed, Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, held Elizabeth captive at a dilapidated campsite just miles from her home, moved west to California for the winter, and returned to Smart's hometown where police arrested them that spring. During their daughter's absence, Ed and Lois Smart held weekly press conferences to call attention to the case, which became the most publicized child abduction since the Lindbergh baby (E. and L. Smart 2003, 54; E. Smart 2009, 6). Elizabeth remained in the public eye long after her return home, in part ... Read More

  • Black Daughter/Father Poetics: Beyond Patriarchal Longing
    • Abstract: My work is an oracle practice. Again and again I sit down with questions I cannot answer and I journey. I don't ever necessarily arrive at an answer, but I do move. Some people in my family open up the Bible to any page, close their eyes and place their finger on a verse and trust the words they touch to heal and help them. I am the same. Except I turn to phrases from Black women theorists and I choose them with my eyes open. I choose the phrases that disrupt my breathing.Recently my father died of metastasized prostate cancer. And now I have another question with no answer. How do I grieve and honor my father' How do I create a Black feminist relationship across death that does not reproduce an afterlife of ... Read More

  • A Taste for Brown Bodies: Gay Modernity and Cosmopolitan Desire by Hiram
           Pérez (review)
    • Abstract: Queer theory has a race problem. Despite countless interventions by a growing constellation of critical scholars for more than two decades, the glaring whiteness of queer studies persists. Literary critic Hiram Pérez wrestles with this foundational, field-defining concern in his Lambda Literary Award-winning book, A Taste for Brown Bodies: Gay Modernity and Cosmopolitan Desire. An associate professor of English at Vassar College, Pérez is perhaps best known for his essay "You Can Have My Brown Body and Eat It, Too!" in the 2005 special issue of Social Text, "What's Queer About Queer Studies, Now'"1 Published more than a decade before the release of Pérez's long-awaited monograph, the special issue offered a clarion ... • Feminist Ethnography: Thinking Through Methodologies, Challenges, and
Possibilities by Dána-Ain Davis and Christa Craven (review)
    • Abstract: Dána-Ain Davis and Christa Craven, feminist anthropologists and coeditors of the anthology Feminist Activist Ethnography: Counterpoints to Neoliberalism in North America (2013), collaborated to produce a valuable resource for those who want to learn about or conduct feminist ethnographic research. The intersectional and transnational feminist textbook is organized into eight chapters that introduce readers to key concepts, methods, and histories of interdisciplinary feminist knowledge production in predominantly, though not exclusively, North American universities. Each chapter addresses a different aspect of feminist ethnography, which the authors describe as1. Involv[ing] a feminist sensibility and commitment ... Read More

  • Gut Feminism by Elizabeth A. Wilson (review)
    • Abstract: Over a decade ago, Karen Barad challenged feminist and queer theorists to give a precise account of how discourse materializes in and as bodies. Recognizing that many of the most important theories of sex and gender at that time took the flesh as the result of iterative performative enactments, she asked what we might be able to say about the nature of the flesh such that it is open to the shaping effect of discourse. "If performativity is linked not only to the formation of the subject but also to the production of the matter of bodies," as she put it, "then it is all the more important that we understand the nature of this production" (2003, 808). Elizabeth A. Wilson's recently published monograph Gut Feminism ... Read More
