  • Carver, Cavell, and the Uncanniness of the Ordinary
    • Abstract: Atypical philosophical move is to divide our world into two. In its most general variety such a division leads to a distinction between appearance and reality. In more subtle versions it comes out as the difference between the just government and the world we live in, between the true me and the lowlife I am, between our emotionally charged responses to each other in contrast to strictly rational ones, etc. We are supposed to move away from the ordinary world toward a better one, from our ordinary selves toward our true selves; and philosophy is often thought to be the prime mover here. This sense of a doubled world is so common in philosophy that it would be more accurate to say that philosophy begins in a turn ... Read More

  • Toward an Ordinary Language Psychoanalysis: On Skepticism and Infancy
    • Abstract: I want, however, to make a different argument here, namely that Cavell's consideration of Phillips's neologism shows that he is sufficiently taken by the apparent affinities between psychoanalysis and ordinary language philosophy to wonder whether there might be an as yet unacknowledged kinship between them. In the term "ordinary-language psychoanalysis" he hears an invitation to consider more closely the relationship between psychoanalysis and philosophy as it is practiced by Wittgenstein, Austin, and, presumably, Cavell himself.2 This essay takes up this invitation by considering the hitherto unexplored family resemblances between Cavell's inheritance of ordinary language philosophy, as demonstrated by his ... • Ulysses, Blindness, and Accessible Modernism
    • Abstract: Pro captu lectoris habent sua fata libelliCan james joyce's ulysses be read with the ears instead of the eyes' The question might seem to be a frivolous one were it not for a group of people who were unable to read in the conventional way because of impaired vision—much like Joyce himself, at least in his later years. Blind and partially sighted people had few options when Ulysses was first published in 1922. Most depended on volunteers to read aloud to them, and even the minority who could read braille with their fingertips had a limited selection of titles from which to choose. Almost no one had access to Ulysses either way. Yet this same decade witnessed the development of sound-recording technologies designed ... Read More

  • Trade Secrets: Poetry in the Teaching Machine
    • Abstract: In a 1996 interview with the poet Mark Wunderlich, Jorie Graham admits that while teaching creative writing "puts one into contact with an incredibly wide swath of reality" (a net positive, in this context), the vocation in which many contemporary poets find themselves is also the source of an intractable, almost existential tension:Sometimes teaching feels like an extraordinary price to pay for the freedom to write poems. I find myself increasingly unable to write—to make contact with my work—while I'm "talking out" so much, burning a hole in my silence … I've taken to not writing at all when that starts to happen. I need certain things to remain secret from my own conceptual intellect for a poem to actually ... Read More

  • Reading for the Plotter
    • Abstract: Miss Prism: The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what Fiction means. Cecily: I suppose so. But it seems very unfair.there is a creation of a fiction which has many roles (doubts, reproaches, desires, melancholies).Every creator is a plotter; and all the pieces impersonating his ideas on the board were here as conspirators and sorcerers. Only in the final instant was their secret spectacularly exposed.Once imbued with story-level mastery, a literary character can no longer be called a mere "actant," a functional embellishment of narrative's aesthetic unity. Neither reducible to an echo of the author's meticulous plotting, nor conflated with the reader's as-meticulous counterplotting in the throes ... Read More

  • Toward a Computational Archaeology of Fictional Space
    • Abstract: Space is a hard thing to pin down. It identifies dimensional continuity and a topography, that is, a relationship between objects. It is also itself an object: a limit-defining quantity even in its most abstract sense. "O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space—were it not that I have bad dreams," Hamlet says of his ambition and his dreams.1 A human palm is a part of the body and a map. A mirror is a piece of furniture and a frame for reflection. Under extreme magnification, the head of a pin appears a vast and mountainous terrain, home to angels and bacterial detritus. The characterization of diegetic—let us call it also virtual and fictional—space presents further ... Read More
