  • Nótaí na nEagarthóirí: Editors’ Notes
    • Abstract: We open this issue with a reflection from the poet and critic Eamonn Wall, as he muses on the centennial of the Easter Rising that has been so widely marked in the year past. There are, he ruminates, many ways of remembering: the written record, of course, and the public commemorations that crowded the calendar both in Ireland and abroad, and also the witness of fiction and poetry. But we first learn our history at home, Wall says, and so at the center of his reflections he places the unspooling conversations he heard as a boy in Wexford, when his aunts gathered to play cards. “I understand why they had no need of history books,” he recalls, as his relatives “belonged to the continuum of events from 1916 that ... • My Aunts at the Card Table: Ways of Remembering the Rising
    • Abstract: Earlier this year, I took a Saturday morning walk through the streets of Clifden in County Galway. As is frequently the case in Ireland a burst of sunshine was followed by a downpour of rain, the rain pounding and cascading from above and from all sides so that I had the feeling I was not in Connemara but instead onboard a trawler during an episode of Deadliest Catch, that television show of last resort. Quickly, I beat a retreat to the Clifden Bookshop where a large space, nine feet tall by about six feet wide, if I recall correctly, had been set aside as a gathering place for books published to celebrate, commemorate, and analyze the centenary of the 1916 Rising. As it happens, at that point I already knew that ... Read More

  • Ireland and Brexit: A Roundtable
    • Abstract: editors’ note: On June 23, 2016, voters in the United Kingdom stunned the world by voting to leave the European Union, which it had joined in 1973. Governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide are still grappling with the question of what the long- and short-term consequences of the unprecedented decision may prove to be. Ireland, given its geographical proximity (the only nation to share a land border with the UK), and its extensive trade relationship with the United Kingdom—not to mention a centuries-long history of complex Anglo-Irish relations—almost certainly will feel the results of the Brexit vote more than any other member state.Recognizing the uncertainty and volatility of the Brexit fallout, New ... • “Singin’ Sprees” and Death Songs: Marina Carr’s
           Lyrical Loss
    • Abstract: Marina Carr’s interest in playwrights tends toward the poetic. In 1998 she wrote that “there are poets of the theatre and there are prose writers of the theatre. The ones who interest me are the poets of the theatre.”1 She also has stated directly that she prefers poetry to other genres, and two of her plays, By the Bog of Cats (1998) and Woman and Scarecrow (2006), specifically turn on the concerns of lyric poetry.2 These plays are not lyric dramas in the sense that the term is applied to opera and musical theater—although Carr translated the libretto for Verdi’s Rigoletto for a 2015 production in Dublin. Rather, these two plays are lyrical in the sense that they borrow from poetic form and participate within a ... Read More

  • Poitín agus an “Tercer cine”
    • Abstract: Tá áit lárnach ag Poitín le Bob Quinn i stóras scannánaíochta na Gaeilge, más stóras scáinte féin é. Is é Poitín an chéad scannán a phléitear in “Breakthroughs,” an chaibidil in Cinema and Ireland (1987) le Kevin Rockett, leabhar a chuireann síos ar bhunú is ar bhuanú thionscal logánta na príomhscannánaíochta in Éirinn. Míníonn Rockett an tábhacht a bhain leis an spéis úr a bhí ag an gComhairle Ealaíon sa scannánaíocht sna 1970í. Deir sé: “The Arts Council’s first Film Script Award was made to Bob Quinn’s Poitín (Poteen), from a script by Colm Bairéad [a bhí bunaithe ar dhráma aonghnímh dá chuid, ar bronnadh Duais an Oireachtais air]. • Etcetera Theatre Company: An Exercise in Ulster Loyalist Storytelling
    • Abstract: The inept or simply nonexistent portrayals of Ulster loyalists—and of Northern Protestants more broadly—in film, television, and the theater have often been noted, with detrimental ramifications for the group itself.1 This is partially self-inflicted; loyalists have in many cases unwisely shirked partaking in their own portrayal, of a piece perhaps with “the general defensiveness that Protestants have about their whole culture.”2 In recent years, however, some loyalists have become aware of the necessity of articulation, with one avenue potentially offered by the “safe thinking space” of the theater, where the mind intuits “no danger from the alternative actions, thoughts and feelings being presented.”3 I serve on ... • “You Have Made Him What He Is”: Irish Laborers and the Preston Strike
in Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South
    • Abstract: In early May of 1853, Elizabeth Gaskell wrote a letter to Charles Dickens proposing a new serialized novel that would eventually become North and South (1855), a novel that depicts her growing understanding of the complex labor relations in industrialized England.1 Gaskell’s novel would not appear in the pages of Household Words for more than a year, and in the interim, the Preston Strike—a vastly publicized and highly emotive labor struggle—drew national attention to workers’ conditions and wages in England. The strike also drew national attention to the immigrant Irish workforce’s role in the same context. Gaskell had previously fictionalized the struggles of the working class in industrial towns, notably in her ... Read More

  • Family, Linen, and Emigration in Ulster, 1700–1740: The Galphin
           Family in Two Worlds
    • Abstract: In 1735, Thomas Galphin of County Armagh died. His wife, Barbara, and their seven children—George, Margaret, Judith, Martha, Susannah, Barbara, and Robert—lost not only a father and husband, but also the family’s primary caretaker and provider. Already tormented by the pervasive poverty that gripped Ulster in the early eighteenth century, the Galphin family faced an increasingly dire situation that promised to get worse. But into the fray stepped George Galphin, the eldest son, who assumed his father’s responsibilities. Between 1735 and 1737, George sought solutions to his family’s circumstances, which led him to a series of momentous decisions that forever changed his life and the future of his family. Those ... • Flowing Tides: History and Memory in an Irish Soundscape by Gearóid Ó
           hAllmhuráin (review)
    • Abstract: Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin is well-known to specialists in Irish music across the world. As a concertina player and scholar, he has spent his life digging deeply into the sounds and locations of County Clare’s rich musical tradition by playing, learning, and asking questions as a well-informed participant observer. His newest contribution to the library of Irish music scholarship is simultaneously a page-turner, an inspiration, and a “who’s who” of the Clare scene at home and abroad. Ó hAllmhuráin’s years in France (and Francophone Canada) are revealed in the titles of the introductory chapter: “L’Entrée; Clare and its Soundscape” and the conclusion, “L’épilogue: Remembering and Forgetting.” Because languages and ... • After the Titanic: A Life of Derek Mahon by Stephen Enniss (review)
    • Abstract: Derek Mahon (b. 1941), is central to the remarkable late twentieth-century efflorescence of poetry in Ireland that includes Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley, Eavan Boland, John Montague, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Paul Muldoon, Ciaran Carson, and Medbh McGuckian, among others. His essential poetry, translations, and literary journalism from the early 1960s to the present reach from the parish to the universe (as Patrick Kavanagh, a poet he came to late but admired for his attentiveness to “ordinary life” and his profoundly “earthed” quality, would have it) and back, ensuring his work’s relevance for Ulster, Irish, British, continental, and global contexts and concerns.Stephen Enniss’s affective ... • The Ordnance Survey and Modern Irish Literature by Cóilín
           Parsons (review)
    • Abstract: Cóilín Parsons effectively broadens the scope of the British Board of Ordnance’s Survey (1824-1846), which mapped Ireland on the unprecedented scale or representative fraction of six inches to one mile, to yield a novel study of emergent modernism in Irish literature. Mindful of the iconic status of the Ordnance Study maps and declaring his “story” to be “the relationship between a modern mapping project and the emergence of modernist form,” Parsons argues that thissignal modern project—the abstraction of landscape so that it could be made to fit the demands of scientific representation … is a defining point in the cultural history of Ireland, and its imprint was felt for decades after the initial survey was ... • Brewing Identities: Globalisation, Guinness and the Production of
           Irishness by Brenda Murphy (review)
    • Abstract: Everyone knows the Irish love Guinness. This brand of stout, produced by the British multinational, Diageo, has become something of a national icon, a ubiquitous signifier of Irishness around the world. Brenda Murphy’s Brewing Identities aims to strip away the mystique that has grown up around what is, underneath several carefully constructed layers of advertising-generated hype, just a mere capitalist commodity. Adapted from her dissertation at Goldsmith’s College, London, Murphy’s book locates her analysis in a sophisticated mix of semiotics, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. The entirety of the text is structured according to a “Circuit of Culture,” a conceptual model Murphy borrows from the ... • One Crimson Thread by Micheal O’Siadhail (review)
    • Abstract: Micheal O’Siadhail published his Collected Poems with Bloodaxe Books in 2013. Since that landmark, he has published a volume of sonnets describing the daily struggles he and his late wife, Brid, endured as she lived with Parkinson’s disease from 1995 until 2013. The stages of her illness, the significant events they faced together and apart, and the emotional repercussions of Brid’s death are given affecting treatment in One Crimson Thread.O’Siadhail’s poetry portrays his intimate experiences as the husband and, later, as principal caregiver of Brid, his wife for forty-four years until her death in June 2013. This new volume features portraits of the currents of their marriage—described more fully in the earlier ... Read More

  • Seamus Heaney: An Introduction by Richard Rankin Russell (review)
    • Abstract: Though some might sigh at the thought of yet another book on the poetry of Seamus Heaney, Richard Rankin Russell’s new introduction to the poetry fills in a longstanding gap. The last previous introduction, Andrew Murphy’s Seamus Heaney—despite a publication date of 2010—does not discuss any of Heaney’s work after his 1999 translation of Beowulf. Russell’s Seamus Heaney, An Introduction is the first to include the entire scope of Heaney’s poetry, even including sundry poems published after his death in 2013.Those just embarking on a study of the poetry of Heaney could find no more capable or enthusiastic guide than Russell, who is an astute reader of individual poems, yet one who strikes a balance between close ...
