  • Nótaí na nEagarthóirí: Editors’ Notes
    • Abstract: On many levels, in-betweeness is a condition that permeates Irish life and thought. Perhaps the nearness of the border to poet Mary O’Donnell’s childhood in the drumlin country of County Monaghan was a geographic reminder of that familiar, liminal state, for dividedness runs throughout the memoir that she shares with us to open this issue. Now settled in County Kildare, in O’Donnell’s portrayal of a weekend spent with her ninety-year-old mother in the family home, she finds herself amid other murky boundaries: a grown woman, but still a child to her mother, a devoted caregiver but sometimes a reluctant one, and an adult for whom time and distance have potentiated both the pull of home and her insistence on ... • My Mother, in Drumlin Country
    • Abstract: Whenever I travel to Monaghan for the weekend, I usually juggle my options for some days in advance. The drive is only two hours from where I live in Kildare, and I head up roughly every two weeks. There are often things I’d prefer to do, but my mother lives alone. She is one of today’s miracles of modern medicine, kept going by a concoction of Warfarin and anti-hypertensive drugs to ensure she won’t die from circulatory ailments, at least. I park the car. Already the dog, Cleo, is barking. The cat has slithered beneath the high oak hedge on the west side of the house. I notice her keeping a predatory eye on a cluster of blue-tits further along, as they swing from the peanut holder that projects ... Read More

  • Thomas MacDonagh’s 1916: Protagonist and Playwright
    • Abstract: On the evening of Saturday, April 23, 2016, a group gathered inside the always chilly precincts of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. They were there to attend the opening night of Signatories, a play about the seven men who had signed the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. The play consisted of eight monologues by contemporary Irish writers; seven about the signatories, and the eighth, by Emma Donoghue, about Elizabeth O’Farrell, the woman who brought the surrender order from Pádraig Pearse. Signatories was UCD’s contribution to the commemoration of the Rising and all eight of the playwrights were UCD graduates: Donoghue, Thomas Kilroy, Hugo Hamilton, Frank McGuinness, Rachel Feehily, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne, Joseph ... • Lucy Caldwell’s The Meeting Point (2011): From Ireland to Bahrain
           and Back
    • Abstract: The Meeting Point (2011), the second novel by Belfast native Lucy Caldwell, focuses on Euan and Ruth Armstrong, an Anglican minister and his wife who travel from County Down to Bahrain for a mission trip; Euan’s mission is both a response to the events of September 11, 2001, and an anticipation of the war in Iraq, which is declared during the course of the novel’s narrative.1 When they arrive in Bahrain, Euan reveals that the true nature of the mission is something quite different. The real purpose of the trip is to enter Saudi Arabia, where he and a contact will distribute Bibles and baptize converts. During the course of their month-long stay in Bahrain, Ruth has an affair with a local man, Farid, and ... Read More

  • Gender and the Nationalistic Ballad: Thomas Davis, Thomas Moore, and Their
           Songs
    • Abstract: Thomas Davis was a powerful force behind the wave of cultural nationalism that swept Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century. A cofounder of the influential Irish weekly The Nation, Davis used the journal as a platform to promote a brand of Irish nationalism distinctive for its nonsectarian appeal. Fiery editorial prose carried his message to the public, but so, too, did poetry and song, modes of cultural expression increasingly linked to nationalist agendas throughout Europe at the time. “Young Ireland,” as Davis and his followers became known, focused much of their attention upon the traditional Irish song.1 Celebrating the genre as an exemplar of their cultural heritage, they harnessed its emotional power ... • John O’Keeffe and the Fenian Brotherhood in the American West and
           Midwest, 1866–1890
    • Abstract: In the course of reminiscing about the Fenian invasion of Canada in 1866, Captain John O’Keeffe, a prominent activist and recruiter for the group, declared that the Fenian Brotherhood was “the greatest revolutionary organisation in the history of the world,” continuing that it “spread like lightening [sic] over two hemispheres.”1 Even allowing for hyperbole, O’Keeffe’s boast does not hold up under scrutiny. Certainly, from its formation in 1858, the Fenian Brotherhood—the more common name of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB)—became one of the vehicles through which Irish nationalism in America was most effectively articulated during the second half of the nineteenth century. The purpose of the ... Read More

  • “The Reductive Logic of Domination”: Narratives and Counter-Narratives
           in Irish Poetry Anthologies
    • Abstract: The falsely homogenizing ideology that underpins the dominant criticism of Irish literature, and more specifically of Irish poetry, originated in the postcolonial Cultural Revival movement of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. This ideology has had a profound and lasting effect on anthologies and criticism of poetry from the island of Ireland. Familiar declarations include Douglas Hyde’s infamous call in 1892 to “build up an Irish nation on Irish lines.”1 Forty years later, Daniel Corkery offered his well-known prescription for “national literature . . . written primarily for its own people” and “referable to their life.”2 Such assertions stand as archetypal examples of what Frantz Fanon ... • John McGahern, Post-Revival Literature, and Irish Cultural Criticism
    • Abstract: John McGahern’s attitude to many Irish writers from the first half of the twentieth century was often ambivalent. He instinctively disliked and distrusted the overt polemical stance adopted by many writers in the decades immediately following Independence, even if he could find in those same writers qualities of style or vision that he admired and, on occasion, even echoed in his own fiction. His relationship with the poet Patrick Kavanagh is a case in point. As early as 1959 he wrote to Michael McLaverty that, “Kavanagh is an irresponsible critic and a careless poet. It is a pity he doesn’t take more care with his poems because he is richly gifted.”1 On the one hand, McGahern deplored Kavanagh’s ... Read More

  • Deirdre Madden’s One by One in the Darkness (1996): Impossible
           Reconciliation?
    • Abstract: The BBC’s coverage of the Enniskillen bombing that occurred on Remembrance Day, 1987, highlighted Gordon Wilson, the father of a victim. On the day of the bombing—that is, on the day of his daughter’s death—Wilson declared that he bore “no ill will” to those who planned the attack, and stated that he forgave the perpetrators.1 Years later, a column in the local Enniskillen paper, the Impartial Reporter, asked, How could you forgive them? I thought. I can’t forgive the people who terrorised me. To be honest I did not believe him, could not believe him, and did not believe it was humanly possible to forgive someone for killing your daughter. The only thing that had kept me going over the years was the ... Read More

  • Clúdach: Cover
    • Abstract: We are delighted to return, in the covers of our 2017 volume, to the rich collections of the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, which our longtime readers may recall was also the source of our cover art in volume 3 (1999). Over the course of the next four covers, we will present nineteenth-century Irish paintings from the Crawford’s holdings that feature animals. We start with Bay Horse by Samuel L. Murphy, an 1871 oil on canvas, measuring 44 x 60 cm. Little is known about Murphy, who is generally identified as a member of the Irish School of painting; he flourished in the period 1860 to 1880. Surprisingly, given the extensive history of horse breeding and training in Ireland, there are relatively few ... Read More
