  • Crossing the Lines: Borders, Transgressions, and a Spot of Smuggling
    • Abstract: Although I grew up in Deansgrange on the south side of Dublin, I was never let forget that we were blow-ins to the big smoke. My mother from Collooney, County Sligo, and my father from Warrenpoint, County Down, made sure that their respective counties and provinces loomed large in a childhood that seemed full of borders. There was the one created by the Shannon, which, when crossing, my mother would say "to hell or to Connacht, here we come!" and there was the more serious one between North and South. That one created a place that others called "Southern Ireland," a place we were deemed to be from by visitors from England and further afield. But I knew it as a place that did not exist in any legal entity, but one ... Read More

  • The Irish Catholic Church and the Internet
    • Abstract: In an article about the current state of the Catholic church in Ireland published in an Italian Jesuit magazine in 2017, the former Irish provincial Gerry O'Hanlon wrote that the challenge for the Irish church today was "to re-awaken the need for salvation and the Good News of the Gospels within a culture which experiences no such need."1 Back in 2004, another Jesuit, writing in the Review of Ignatian Spirituality, had already warned that "effective advertising and marketing" were crucial" to "develop a fresh image" of the Catholic church, one that would be more likely to "capture the imagination of [its] customers."2 The emergence and growth of the church's digital strategy in Ireland must be understood against ... • A Slightly Revolutionary Party: Labour and Parliamentary Politics in the
           Early Free State
    • Abstract: In the run-up to the 1922 Dáil election, the first conducted after the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, a Labour newspaper warned voters that, "No matter what is happening don't let anything discourage you. We are a young party and to a great extent we are unskilled in electioneering. We shall make blunders—many of them and often, too, and some of them may be so serious as to be fatal."1 This statement, which echoed Pearse's famous declaration that the Volunteers may mistakenly shoot the wrong people at first, both lowered expectations for the fledgling party and reminded voters of its decidedly non- parliamentary roots. Much of the historical analysis of the Labour Party's parliamentary launch has focused on its ... Read More

  • Against Reference: On Reading Objects in Éilís Ní
           Dhuibhne's The Bray House
    • Abstract: Ireland as we know it—as it could be known in the way we know things—is gone. In the near future depicted in Éilís Ní Dhuibhne's novel The Bray House (1990), it has been decimated by ecological catastrophe and unchecked British nuclear ambitions. The narrator, Dr. Robin Lagerlof, is an archaeologist with an authoritarian streak who mounts an expedition to Ireland from Sweden, leading a small team that includes Karen, also a researcher, and two young volunteers, the couple Karl and Jenny. They land near Dublin, and after exploring Bray's desolate landscape of ash, discover and excavate the titular house. Robin's report, which occupies the entire midsection of the book, details what she discovers in the home, which ... Read More

  • Changing Places: Locations of Contemporary Irish Poetry
    • Abstract: The sense of place in Irish poetry used to be one of its pleasures and an identifying mark of what was Irish about Irish poetry. That sense of place, though, almost always used to refer to rural landscapes and settings, from Yeats's Sligo, to Kavanagh's Monaghan, Montague's Tyrone, and Heaney's County Derry—all of which in their different ways have fed into the discourse of the nation, and what Benedict Anderson, in his classic study of nationalism, would call the "imagined community" of Ireland.1 Indeed, the names of places have long played an important role in combining Irish landscape, language, history, and mythology, and established a continuity between literature in Irish and English. The Irish-language genre ... Read More

  • Sidney Olcott and Irish Politics: The Lad from Old Ireland (1910)
    • Abstract: In 1910, it was a novel idea for an American production company to go abroad, film fictional material on location, and then return to the United States to exhibit these foreign stories. The New York-based Kalem company started these transatlantic forays, traveling first to Ireland, England, and then on to Germany; their initial trip to Ireland yielded a one-reel, twelve-minute film, The Lad from Old Ireland (1910)—a fiction film that has become central to Irish American film history—as well as a travelogue, An Irish Honeymoon (1911).1The Lad from Old Ireland was co-created by Sidney Olcott and Gene Gauntier, which we know from Gene Gauntier's much-cited 1928 memoir and Sidney Olcott's almost unknown contemporary ... • "The Scale of Horror Has no Shape": Representing War in Observe the Sons
of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme
    • Abstract: Frank McGuinness's Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme debuted in 1985 to widespread acclaim. From one perspective, its positive reception is not surprising—Observe the Sons of Ulster is a beautifully written and technically innovative piece of theater. Nevertheless, the production was a remarkable risk, and its success something of a marvel. A depiction of Ulster nationalists written by an Irish republican could easily have met with a harsh reception in the polarized political atmosphere of 1980s Ireland. Republicans might have taken offense at the production's sympathetic depiction of Unionists, and Unionists themselves might have sensed, and resented, the skepticism regarding their ideology and ... • After the Epiphany: Gabriel Conroy, Gabriel Conroy, and the Journey
           Westward
    • Abstract: On January 7, 1904, James Joyce wrote the manuscript of his essay "A Portrait of the Artist." Submitted to a new journal called Dana, it was rejected, but subsequently provided the seed for Stephen Hero and, later, A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man. Richard Ellmann properly calls the piece "the extraordinary beginning of Joyce's mature work," adding that it demonstrates characteristics of an essay but also of "an autobiographical story that mixed admiration for himself with irony."1 The date Joyce penned on the manuscript essay may not be as widely celebrated as the one, a little more than five months later, June 16—the "sacred day" Joyce first went walking with Nora Barnacle and later immortalized as ... • Clúdach: Cover
    • Abstract: With this issue, we present the last of a quartet of covers drawn from nineteenth-century paintings (all of them, in our selection, featuring animals) held in the collections of the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork. The cover of our Winter issue is Feeding Time by the Cork-born artist Hugh C. Charde (1858–1946). After early studies in Cork, Charde went to Antwerp from 1883–84 to study at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts; he is thought to have studied in Paris as well, though the records are unclear. During his years on the continent, he sent paintings for exhibition at the Royal Dublin Society. He returned to Cork in 1886, but after showing a portrait at the Royal Hibernia Academy that year, did not exhibit his work ... Read More

  • The Adulterous Muse: Maud Gonne, Lucien Millevoye and W. B. Yeats by
           Adrian Frazier (review)
    • Abstract: Anyone who has read the poems of W. B. Yeats, or knows anything about his life, knows that he fell in love with Maud Gonne, the beautiful Irish nationalist, when he was a young man; proposed marriage to her several times over the course of almost thirty years; that she did not requite his passion; and that Yeats wrote some of the finest love poems in the language, ranging from the adulatory and mythologizing to the accusing and embittered: "Why should I blame her that she filled my days / With misery. …" The conjunction of sexual desire and political nationalism in her person was typically transmuted in Yeats's poetry into a powerful erotic nationalism, so that even when a poem (such as "Easter, 1916,") appears ... • Post-Ireland' Essays on Contemporary Irish Poetry eds. by Jefferson
Holdridge and Brian Ó Conchubhair (review)
    • Abstract: This expansive collection not only revisits familiar staples of contemporary Irish poetry from fresh angles, but also brings younger writers such as Sinéad Morrissey and Caitriona O'Reilley into the conversation. The overall movement of the book connects this younger generation of writers with their predecessors, while also considering how these poets will relate to those writers whose work is yet to come. Indeed, the collection is at its strongest when it sets its eyes on the future, or links familiar authors to contemporary concerns about multiculturalism and transnational identities; when it occasionally flags, it is often from the tenuous connection of the "post-Ireland" of its title to the fragment of Irish ... • The Wireless Past: Anglo-Irish Writers and the BBC, 1931–1968 by
           Emily C. Bloom (review)
    • Abstract: Emily Bloom's The Wireless Past: Anglo-Irish Writers and the BBC, 1931–1968 analyzes the work of four Anglo-Irish writers—W. B. Yeats, Louis MacNeice, Elizabeth Bowen, and Samuel Beckett—who independently contributed to the British Broadcasting Corporation in the mid-twentieth century. The four authors central to her study were but a few of the writers from Ireland who gravitated toward radio and specifically the BBC during the era of World War II. Bloom finds in their adaptations and original writings for radio a complex set of negotiations that transform our understanding of radio's impact on both literature and on literary modernism.Indeed, The Wireless Past is a highly intentional effort to improve on previous ... • Nótaí na nEagarthóirí: Editors' Notes
    • Abstract: Growing up in Dublin in the 1960s and '70s, the poet Siobhán Campbell was well aware that she lived in a world of borders—the geographic one that stood between her family and their relatives in the North, and also the borders of decorum, propriety, and identity. In an engaging, unspooling memoir, she teases out several sorts of boundaries that she and her family felt. These days, Brexit and speculation about what it will mean for the Irish border is on everyone's lips, but Campbell reminds us that internalized borders can be just as potent—yet, as she matured, Campbell found that even supposedly intractable borders have a way of growing permeable: petty smuggling (some of it ingenious in its deception) became ... • Lawrence M. O'Shaughnessy, Humanist
    • Abstract: On December 3, the Center for Irish Studies, the University of St. Thomas that is its home, and indeed, the Irish American community as a whole, lost a remarkable friend when Lawrence M. O'Shaughnessy—always known to us as Larry—died in St. Paul at the age of ninety-six. We extend our deepest sympathies to his widow Bonnie, to his five surviving children, to his extended family, and to his many friends.Born in St. Paul in 1921, Larry was the last surviving child of Ignatius Aloysius O'Shaughnessy, a legendary philanthropist; in addition to his benefactions to higher education, Larry's father was one of the donors who purchased what is now Killarney National Park and presented it to the Irish state to keep it from ...
