    • Abstract: Ever since Montaigne, it has been a favorite strategy of personal essayists to take a simple object and use it as the point de départ for a much larger consideration. We open this issue with just such an offering from Chris Arthur, "Sleepers"—a patchwork rumination that begins with Arthur recalling the old railroad ties that, when he was a child in Antrim, his father would use for starting fires. Arthur comes to realize that there was "a lot more tied up in our fire than just providing warmth"—for, "along with the basic practicalities of fire-making I was imbibing a set of values that had nothing to do with chopping wood and arranging paper, sticks, and coal together." With his characteristic open-endedness ... Read More

  • Sleepers
    • Abstract: Unlike many people today, I grew up with fires. In County Antrim in the early 1960s it was unusual to have central heating. There was none in my parents' house. Instead, an anthracite stove burned day and night in the kitchen. It provided a hob and oven for cooking, hot water for baths, and lent a trace of background warmth to all the rooms. Before we went on holiday, the fire at its metal heart was allowed to die. Coming back, as soon as we opened the front door, the house felt saturated with an unaccustomed iciness. The chill only lifted once the stove had been relit and was burning steadily enough to provide the core of warmth we were so used to. Its absence made the house seem not our own. It was my mother ... • A Female Voice in Irish Cinema: Women Filmmakers and the Creative
           Documentary
    • Abstract: In common with the situation globally, women are significantly under-represented in the Irish film industry, and most conspicuously so in the influential and prestigious role of director. In their study of Irish fiction films released between 1993 and 2004, Roddy Flynn and Tony Tracy note that "behind the camera, one in five directors were women," accounting for forty-seven films out of 195.1 Had Flynn and Tracy included documentary releases in their survey, and had it covered the last thirteen years, it would have been interesting to see whether these ratios shifted and the tally of women directors increased.Just as documentaries have gained increasing visibility in the Irish cinematic landscape, documentary ... • Waging the Economic War: The IRA, Fianna Fáil, and the Boycott
           British Campaign, 1932–33
    • Abstract: In the early morning hours of November 25, 1932, IRA Volunteers Donal O'Connor and Tom Molloy were arrested as they attempted to destroy the contents of the Bass Ale warehouse in Dublin. When arrested, O'Conner declared, "We are engaged in an economic war and Bass is an English firm, and we are going to make them feel the effects of an economic war."1 Their actions were part of a larger IRA project known as the Boycott British League, which began as an attempt to lead the Irish people in a boycott of British goods. When individual suasion failed, the campaign attempted the mass picketing of firms selling British goods. When this also failed, the IRA attempted to enforce the boycott by focusing on the destruction of ... Read More

  • "Fine When She Left Us"': Theater and the Titanic's Belfast Legacy
    • Abstract: In the spring of 2012, Belfast hosted a massive "Heritage Festival," complete with a rock concert staged by MTV and an enormous light show featuring projections, fireworks, and music. This festival also coincided with the opening of a £100 million exhibition center that is in itself a dazzling architectural feat, a building covered with shards of aluminum that reflect the sun's light, giving it the appearance of rippling water. In addition to these headline festivities, other smaller cultural and historical events including talks, exhibits, and theatrical productions explored the city's past. In all, the celebrations took on a triumphant and joyous feeling, and acted almost as a symbolic rebirth for a city that had ... Read More

  • Remembering and Forgetting: William Trevor's Ethics of Memory
    • Abstract: In the late 1960s, after he had spent much of his adult life in England writing fiction that was set there and populated with English characters, William Trevor turned his best creative attention to Ireland, the site of his own past. By that time, Northern Ireland's late twentieth-century Troubles were rekindling the flames of Ireland's early twentieth-century revolutionary zeal. In a 1989 interview, Trevor explained his sense of time as a force that "both heals and destroys, depending on the nature of the wound."1 His attentiveness to the Janus-like nature of memory is especially clear in his Irish fiction, which, as Mary Fitzgerald-Hoyt notes, can be read as "a sustained lesson on the dual dangers of repeating or ... • Poem as Animal: Oppression and Redemption in Paul Muldoon's Maggot
    • Abstract: Paul Muldoon's poetry has employed extensive animal imagery since the beginning of his career. New Weather (1973), his first volume, includes a clever quasi-religious "Hedgehog" that weds evocations of the Christ with a pessimistic diagnosis of man's irresponsibility: "We forget that never again / Will a god trust in the world."1 His 1977 collection, Mules, brings in more animal imagery, which repeatedly emphasises the hybridity of Muldoon's world, strung, as Tim Kendall observes, between "mortal and immortal, beastly and divine."2 Jefferson Hold-ridge, focusing on a different set of dichotomies than Kendall, argues that Mules features "a type of bestiary of human aspirations, and, as a result, a meditation on ... • Bounty, Moderation, and Miracles: Women and Food in Narratives of the
           Great Famine
    • Abstract: Toward the end of the eighteenth century, the travel writer Arthur Young wrote in his celebrated A Tour in Ireland that, "The men dig turf and plant potatoes and work for their landlord, and the women pay the rent by spinning."1 Young's observation was partly correct, but oversimplified, for it failed to recognize the full spectrum of Irish women's work. Although a division of labor did exist at the time, it was certainly not cast in stone. Further, women's various economic endeavors did more than "pay the rent"; it would have been more accurate to say that they were essential to survival.2 When necessary, women not only cared for homes and children but also compacted dung, gathered turf, and set and dug potatoes ... • Rising to the Occasion: Irish Theater in 2016
    • Abstract: The year 2016 in Irish theater began, inevitably, with an abundance of artistic and theatrical events anticipating the centenary commemorations of the Rising, and climaxing in intensity sometime around Easter. After that, a more varied approach to making theater provided options for commemoration-fatigued audiences—although the entire year was shot through with work that engaged with the historic events. Much of the debate in Ireland around the commemorations focused on inclusivity and balance, with public events also marking those who fought in World War I; the often-overlooked roles that women played in the Rising were likewise the subject of discussion and some official acknowledgement. In general, theater-making ... • Irish Nationalists in America: The Politics of Exile, 1798–1998 by
           David Brundage (review)
    • Abstract: The historiography of Irish-American nationalism is rich with studies of key periods of activism, the role of prominent leaders, and the achievements of specific groups and organizations. David Brundage focuses on some of these topics, but has instead written the first comprehensive history of Irish-American nationalism, from its roots in the waves of United Irish exiles arriving in the early American republic to the crucial United States involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process. Central to his analysis is the assertion that, "Irish nationalism in the United States was not the unmediated expression of some timeless, primordial Irish identity but rather an ongoing work of political invention and ... • Masculinity and Power in Irish Nationalism, 1884–1938 by Aidan
           Beatty (review)
    • Abstract: Timed to coincide with the Paris Olympics, the revival of the Tailteann Games in 1924 was intended as a public display of the strength and vitality of a newly independent Ireland. The Olympic-style competitions were open to all men of Irish descent, with athletes traveling to Ireland from the settler colonies of the British Empire, as well as from Britain itself. Organizers hoped that hosting the games every four years would exhibit Ireland's physical prowess and enthusiastic nationalism. Diminishing budgets hampered the games over the next decade, and because the competitions were largely associated with, and promoted by, the Free State government, the project did not survive the rise of Fianna Fáil. One could ... Read More

  • Postcolonial Overtures: The Politics of Sound in Contemporary Northern
Irish Poetry by Julia Obert (review)
    • Abstract: In the Telemachus episode of Joyce's Ulysses, Stephen Daedalus walks along Sandy mount Strand, experimenting with means of perception. He orders himself to "Shut your eyes and see" and contemplates the "ineluctable modality of the audible. … Rhythm begins, you see. I hear." Stephen may contemplate the unavoidable aural mode of perception, but Julia Obert's Postcolonial Overtures: The Politics of Sound in Contemporary Northern Irish Poetry suggests that critics of Irish poetry have long ignored this central perceptual force. The possibility that soundscapes more accurately create a sense of place in Northern Ireland is the premise behind this study. In chapters on Ciaran Carson, Derek Mahon, and Paul Muldoon, and in ... • John McGahern and the Imagination of Tradition by Stanley van der Ziel
           (review)
    • Abstract: Rising to prominence in the 1960s with the publication of The Barracks (1963) and The Dark (1965), John McGahern has, Stanley van der Ziel writes, traditionally been regarded as a chronicler of "the lives of farmers, teachers, schoolboys and policeman in the Irish midlands in the twentieth century." McGahern is also, he notes, an author able to depict "a recognisable culture at a specific moment in history" and one whose "identity as a writer is inseparable from that of the reader." There is already a considerable body of McGahern criticism—Eamon Maher's John McGahern: From the Local to the Universal (2003), Dermot McCarthy's John McGahern and the Art of Memory (2010), and Richard Robinson's John McGahern and ... • A Tug of Blue by Eleanor Hooker (review)
    • Abstract: Eleanor Hooker's second volume of poems, A Tug of Blue, is a volume of striking formal and thematic range that confirms—indeed, exceeds—the promise of her lauded first volume, The Shadow Owner's Companion (2012). The poems situate the reader in "that other land," a land "modulated by worlds at war inside [the] mind." Divided into two sections, the volume traverses external and internal worlds with an almost cartographic impulse, holding the problem of the solipsistic self under a microscope to describe its shifting contours. At times this cartographic impulse manifests itself explicitly, as when, fearing for her father's death, the poet writes, "A map of the Namib Desert grew / on my back." In this poem and ... Read More

  • Grave Matters: Death and Dying in Dublin, 1500 to the Present ed. by Lisa
Marie Griffith and Ciarán Wallace (review)
    • Abstract: Grave Matters arose out of a 2014 conference at the Glasnevin Cemetery Museum; it comprises fourteen essays divided into four sections. The editors recognize the already extensive work concerning death and dying in Ireland, and so, rather than offering yet another historical survey of beliefs, rituals, and events, this collection explores how death becomes a spectacle under urban circumstances. The capital has always offered a large audience for public commemoration and for social, political, and economic maneuvering. Its higher population also equated to more deaths, and resources like hospitals and job opportunities drew in concentrations of specific types of fatalities. Additionally, certain mortuary businesses ... Read More

  • The Irish Enlightenment by Michael Brown (review)
    • Abstract: In his Philosophical Notebooks, the Irish philosopher George Berkeley famously refuted John Locke's epistemology by objecting that "We Irish men can conceive no such lines," thus suggesting that that Irish thinkers had developed a distinctively "Irish" mode of thinking. Although Berkeley repeatedly returned to this phrase over his career, intellectual historians have faced a steep challenge supporting the implications of Berkeley's note, namely that there was an Irish Enlightenment. From the historical perspective, mapping traditional interpretations of the Enlightenment as a movement espousing rationalism, toleration, and liberty onto a nation mired in the Penal Laws has proved problematic at best. Similarly ... Read More

  • Clúdach: Cover
    • Abstract: We continue our presentation of nineteenth-century paintings from the collections of the Crawford Gallery in Cork—all of which feature animals—with a work from one of Ireland's best-known artists, Daniel Maclise (1806–1870)."The Falconer" is an 1853 oil on canvas painting that measures 61 cm x 417 cm. The Crawford's website notes that the subject of the painting is likely inspired by a fourteenth-century Florentine folk tale, "Frederigo's Falcon," adding that "Maclise has paid a good deal of attention to the implied drama between the two figures and to the Renaissance period costume. The three-quarter length pose in an enclosed space but with an outdoor setting is reminiscent of Renaissance portraiture. The ... Read More
