  • Editors' Note
    • Abstract: CR: The New Centennial Review is devoted to comparative studies of the Americas. The journal's primary emphasis is on the opening up of the possibilities for a future Americas that does not amount to a mere reiteration of its past. We seek interventions, provocations, and, indeed, insurgencies that release futures for the Americas. In general, CR welcomes work that is inflected, informed, and driven by theoretical and philosophical concerns at the limits of the potentialities for the Americas.Such work may be explicitly concerned with the Americas, or it may be broader, global, and/or genealogical scholarship with implications for the Americas. CR recognizes that the language of the Americas is translation, and ... Read More

  • Subjectivity and Femininity: Reading Antigone
    • Abstract: The one who loves sees the world only through the absence of what he loves, and this absence, for him boundless, flows back on the entire world; if a single person is lacking, all will fall back into vanity. What is a subject in the feminine' i will try to answer this question looking at Sophocles's Antigone and starting from a particular content in the reading that Kierkegaard gives of tragedy in his "The Tragic in Ancient Drama Reflected in the Tragic in Modern Drama" (Kierkegaard 1987, 8). Here we learn immediately that the essay is read in the presence of the , an expression that can be translated as "brothers in death," "brothers in burial," or "fellow-dying-men." Although in the text the confirmations are not ... Read More

  • Self-Determination and Personal Identity: A Note on the Prenormative Roots
           of Moral Action
    • Abstract: Practical life and human action are meant to exceed the realm of natural, economical, and technical causation. Certainly an action may be completely subordinate to and determined by a knowledge of causes. Not only because it is always possible (in principle) to trace the psycho-physical adventures of a determined intention and a course of action. In addition, a "cause" is often also invoked when we want to understand or to orientate an action in its full meaning, beyond its psycho-physical dimension. In fact, it is sometimes believed that the question about practical life amounts to the question about the causes to which one must adhere to solve dilemmas that are raised in everyday existence. In such cases ... Read More

  • The Corporeal Meaning of Time: Phenomenology and Literature: Lévinas,
           Reader of Proust
    • Abstract: There is an omnipresence of literature in the philosophical work of Emmanuel Lévinas, but this omnipresence is not circumscribed by unique narrative idioms or occasional references.1 Creating proximity between writing and thought, between philosophy and literature, is one of the characteristics of modernity in the twentieth century. In regards to this, Proust represents what Roland Barthes called in 1974, "a complete system for reading the world. … There is no incident, encounter, characteristic, or situation, in our daily lives that does not have a reference in Proust" (Barthes 2002, 569).If Emmanuel Lévinas did not deny this tradition—which is very ancient in relation to France—it must be added that he was ... • External Things, the Subject, and Language: Lichtenberg and Kant
    • Abstract: Lichtenberg's probably most quoted aphorism—at least regarding his epistemological concerns—proposes an impersonal pronoun (Es) that has made history in the epoch of the subject.1 The reference seems to be fundamentally directed against the Cartesian cogito, as we will see. It belongs to the Notebook Kofthe Waste Books,2 whose records date from 1793 to 1796, a period, like the immediately preceding, of an intense preoccupation with Kant's philosophy. Therefore, it has been pondered that it is also necessary to assess the aphorism in connection with Kant's "I think."Some letters exchanged by both authors are preserved: two of them by Lichtenberg, dated October 30, 1791 and December 9, 1798, sent from Göttingen ... • From the Self to Oneself: Subject and Interiority in Spinoza
    • Abstract: If Spinoza philosophizes in the first person, as the prologue of On the Improvement of Understanding attests, his preference for the plural over the singular must be noted. To describe the human experience in its cognitive and affective form, he prefers to use "us" over "I" in parts 2–5 of Ethics. In addition, he essentially uses impersonal and third-person expressions, such as "man thinks" (Spinoza, II, Axiom 2) or "a free man thinks of nothing less than of death" (Spinoza IV, Prop. 67). This is well known, but we will not go as far as to conclude that there is no subject in Spinoza's work. In her book L'automate spirituel, Lia Levy successfully shows the existence of subjectivity in the work of Spinoza. Although ... Read More

  • Kant's Conception of the Subject
    • Abstract: In a few passages of the Critique of Pure Reason,1 Kant seems to treat the terms "soul" and "subject" as identical; for example, when he speaks in a general way of the faculties or capacities of the soul (see, e.g., Kant 1998, A94/B127; A124; A141/B180; A406/B432). The majority of the time, however, Kant claims that the soul is an object of inner sense (see, e.g., Kant 1998, A22/B37; A361; A381; A385; A846/B874); that is, that the soul is identical to the thinking I precisely as it appears to itself under the form of time. In this case, Kant is referring to the phenomenal or psychological I, and he cleanly distinguishes this from the I of transcendental apperception, that is, from the transcendental subject of ... • Salomon Maimon on the Form of Thought and Consciousness
    • Abstract: In his Essay on Transcendental Philosophy, Salomon Maimon criticizes the Kantian notion of the thing in itself as well as the Kantian attempt to bind sensibility on the part of the understanding, once it has been affirmed that they are two different fundamental sources of our cognition. Interpreters of Maimon's work have given prominence to either of these two aspects. Here I will try to show that these critiques can only be understood against the background of a prior problem posed in Maimon's work, namely that of the form of thought and consciousness. It is by means of the determination of such a form that Maimon is then able to offer a criterion for posing the other two problems and for advancing their ... Read More

  • Cohen and Natorp on Transcendental and Concrete Subjectivity
    • Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the way in which Hermann Cohen and Paul Natorp deal with the problem of the cognitive subject and, in particular, with the relationship between transcendental and concrete subjectivity. Even though Cohen and Natorp share a certain philosophical method for approaching this problem, their results are quite different. While for Cohen concrete subjectivity remains an open issue, without a proper philosophical account, Natorp manages to put forward a theory of concrete subjectivity within the very limits imposed by the transcendental method. However, Natorp soon encounters difficulties in this doctrine and modifies his initial position. In his late theory of ... Read More

  • The Critique of Psychologism and the Conception of Subjectivity in Frege
    • Abstract: 1. There is something like a standard reading of Frege regarding his interest in questions concerning subjectivity.2 This reading is defended by representatives from two diametrically opposed parties, that is, by orthodox analytic philosophers and by defenders of phenomenology. Each party's rationale is, however, completely different. The former want to see in Frege the hero of the semantic turn and, perhaps, a pure philosopher of mathematics; by posing a legitimate question that Frege neither understood nor was sensitive to and then fully answering it, the latter wish to show the superiority of Husserl's way of proceeding over Frege's.2. The standard reading can be summed up in two theses, to which two more are ... Read More

  • Furtive Contemplations: Self, Time, and Affect in Deleuze
    • Abstract: Il y a moi dès que s'établit quelque part une contemplation furtive …With a remarkable and perhaps unparalleled longevity, contemplation stretches from the first chapter of Empiricism and Subjectivity (1953) to the last chapter of What Is Philosophy' (1991).1 This contemplation, of course, is not the contemplation readily recognized by the tradition. This contemplation is not Plato's contemplation of Ideas. For Deleuze, on the contrary, the Platonic Idea prepares the regime of representation, which constitutes one of the most general and sustained targets of his writings. This contemplation, rather, is empirical; it comes from Hume. But it does not therefore escape scrutiny. Hume himself signals a fundamental ... Read More
