  • Editors’ Note
    • Abstract: CR: The New Centennial Review is devoted to comparative studies of the Americas. The journal’s primary emphasis is on the opening up of the possibilities for a future Americas that does not amount to a mere reiteration of its past. We seek interventions, provocations, and, indeed, insurgencies that release futures for the Americas. In general, CR welcomes work that is inflected, informed, and driven by theoretical and philosophical concerns at the limits of the potentialities for the Americas.Such work may be explicitly concerned with the Americas or it may be broader, global, and/or genealogical scholarship with implications for the Americas. CR recognizes that the language of the Americas is translation, and that ... Read More

  • Introduction: Declining Translation
    • Abstract: decline di’klīn verb4 [with obj.] (in the grammar of Latin, Greek, and certain other languages) state the forms of (a noun, pronoun, or adjective) corresponding to cases, number, and gender. The articles published in this issue are not, properly speaking, essays in translation studies. They are all, however, essays on “translation plus”: translation, that is, plus an academic discipline or a translational practice that situates its meaning, as in translation + media; translation + biography; translation + literature; translation + linguistics; translation + history; translation + religion, and so forth. Indeed the most salient trait of this collection is that it records a successful experiment in creating a forum ... Read More

  • An Interview with Emily Apter
    • Abstract: How have you defined “untranslatability” or “un-translatables” in relation to what you have called “translational humanities”?My interest in untranslatability grew out of collaborative editorial work on the Dictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon, an English edition of the French Vocabulaire européeen des philosophies: Dictionnaire des Intraduisibles edited by Barbara Cassin. In my book Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability written while working on the Dictionary, I looked at how nontranslation, retranslation, mistranslation, sovereign exceptionalism, and the translational interdiction in law, cultural prohibition, and theology might be used to recontour the map of the ... • Decipherment and Translation: An Egyptological Perspective
    • Abstract: Within the field of Egyptology, translation plays an absolutely central role; indeed, the birth of Egyptology as a scientific discipline is typically associated with the decipherment of the Rosetta Stone in the early 1820s, which allowed ancient Egyptian texts to be translated for the first time in approximately 1,500 years (Thompson 2015, chap. 7). Before that point, texts in the ancient Egyptian scripts (hieroglyphic, hieratic, and demotic) had been essentially untranslatable since those scripts fell into disuse in the late Roman period—although this did not deter various medieval and early modern commentators from offering “translations” (sometimes wholly spurious) of individual inscriptions or documents. The ... Read More

  • Reinventing Translation: Icons and Dictionaries
    • Abstract: It is often forgotten that [dictionaries] are artificial repositories, put together well after the languages they define. The roots of language are irrational and of a magical nature. The dictionary has consistently been viewed fundamental to the act of translation, while icons are conceptual images that, in many cases, transcend the need for a dictionary and provide a form of automatic translation. The study of icons and dictionaries makes an apt pairing for analysis. At what stage in the interpretation of a linguistic unit does dictionary intervention become necessary? In thinking about when dictionary intervention becomes necessary, it is illuminating to first examine icons, whose presence implies the ... Read More

  • Vibrating States of Uncertainty
    • Abstract: To read that Flaubert wrote “Ma mère m’a apporté la lettre de Mme de Maupassant” is not, in the absence of context, revelatory. That’s true whether or not one reads French or is provided with a translation (such as “Mother brought me Madame de Maupassant’s letter”). We only begin to grasp the sentence once we know that Mme de Maupassant was the mother-in-law of Alfred Le Poittevin, that Alfred Le Poittevin was Flaubert’s oldest and most beloved friend, that the sentence was jotted down on Tuesday, April 4, 1848, and that the letter in question brought word of Alfred’s death. As students of Flaubert’s life know, that only skims the surface of a nearinfinite potential contextualization. We could add that two years ... Read More

  • The Spacious Ironies of Translation
    • Abstract: I confess that I have not been able to take my eyes off translation since at least 1978 when, as a 17-year old, I read an article in the National Geographic called “Ebla: Splendor of an Unknown Empire.” Here I met with the astounding discoveries Italian archeologists were pulling from the rubble of that ancient Near Eastern city, but more importantly with the work of a Semitic language expert who had successfully deciphered the third-millennium BCE, Eblaite language that appears on some 15,000 clay tablets that were among those discoveries (La Far 1978). I can still feel the visceral amazement that welled up in me at that feat—painstakingly working out the meaning of an utterly forgotten language based on ... Read More

  • Mutant Tongues: Translating English in the Postcolonial Humanities
    • Abstract: About a year ago, I received an invitation to give a talk at the Nanyang Technical University (NTU), the second-largest university after the National University of Singapore in the Southeast Asian city-state. As part of a series of celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the founding of the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences at NTU, it was also an opportunity to reflect on the role of humanities in Singapore and the world at large. As the e-mail from Professor Wee Wan-ling put it: “Since the late 1990s, many East and Southeast Asian societies have become increasingly interested in reforming their educational systems … to produce creative and thoughtful students who can better participate in an ... • Algorithmic Translations
    • Abstract: The spiny ink shapes of Eric Zboya’s visual translations of Mallarmé’s Un Coup de Dés radiate, insectlike, against a white background, the sharply angular lines spinning out from quasi-larval cores suggestive of the sudden dynamic movements of alarm, attack, flight. A nightmare of a Rorschach test for an entomophobe, perhaps, but the discrete shapes also conjure up speculative life forms—transgenic fusions of sea horse and sea urchin, mutant species emerging from the oceanic abyss of Mallarmé’s poetic text. When understood as page-by-page, verso-recto renderings of the complex typographic design of Un Coup de Dés, the images start to coalesce and lend themselves to optical rearrangement and imagined visual ... • The Ars and Translation: Ramon Llull’s Strategies for Communicating
           Truth
    • Abstract: Only a brief perusal of the major publications and collections of essays in the field of translation studies during the past several decades reveals a dearth of materials exploring either the theory or process of translation during the period of the European Middle Ages. Introductory surveys and authors’ prefaces have a distinct tendency to leap from brief references to Cicero and Jerome’s Vulgate translation of the Bible straight to the world of eighteenth-century Romanticism with occasionally a perfunctory touchdown in the environs of the Renaissance humanists or the rationalists of the Enlightenment (for example in the collections of essays in Baker 2010; Munday 2008; Schulte and Biguenet 1992; Venuti 1995). ... • Translation: An Exercise in Midrashic Reading, or Translating the Intentio
    • Abstract: Set in motion by seminal theoretical work by Walter Benjamin, Roman Jakobson, and Jacques Derrida, translation studies has since expanded into literary and cultural studies. The realization that the focus of translation studies needs to expand is pointedly recapped by Jeremy Munday, who demands that more attention be paid to the “cultural and sociopolitical contexts in which translations are produced” (Munday 2012, 158). With a change in approach, the nature of the discussion has also changed, arguing that the unit of study needs to be bigger than the sign: it needs to incorporate the cultural identity of the speaker and the language while it separates itself from a structuralist approach. However, along with an ... • On Translation: Between Postcolonialism and the Global Humanities
    • Abstract: Words are not proper and don’t stay put; they wander into adjacent language fields, get lost in translation, pick up ticks from foreign interference, and so can’t quite mean what they say. Teaching bilinguals about deconstruction is almost redundant. My daughter speaks without rolling her “R” and replaces this sound with a voiced labiodental fricative . While this hardly affects her when she speaks English, it is much more evident when she speaks Italian. She says “amoe” instead of “amoe” (for love) and, within the entire Italian extended family and group of friends, we have all started using (and writing) “AmoVe” for “sweetheart” when Ada is part of the conversation. It is clearly a term of endearment, an ... Read More

  • “I Am Those We Are Here”: Multiplying Indigenous Voices
           through Poetic Translation
    • Abstract: In the poem that gives a title to this essay, “Soy los que estamos aquí” (“I Am Those We Are Here”), Enriqueta Lunez speaks to the vibrancy of her Tsotsil culture and language. Though the indigenous cultures of Mexico are often praised in the past tense they are very much alive today. The poem begins:Her title holds the key to the message of this poem: cultural identity and success are a communal pursuit, and one that is intimately tied to language. The challenge of balancing individual ego with community goals is echoed by the inconsistent use of the grammatical subject in the title: “I am” (firstperson singular) takes on a plural pronoun (“I am they”) and in the subordinate clause the subject shifts to ... • How ‘Bout Them Sapotes?: Mendicant Translations and Maya Corrections in
           Early Indigenous Theologies
    • Abstract: The encounter with the Americas posed new challenges for European translators, who struggled to render Christian concepts into non-Indo-European and non-Semitic languages. The most influential treatise on translation published between the late medieval period and early modernity, Étienne Dolet’s 1540 essay La manière de bien traduire d’une langue en aultre, outlined five basic principles for translation.1 Historians of translation theory have argued that these principles were already used in Iberia by the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, especially translations of Jewish and Muslim texts from classical languages into Castilian and Catalan (Cartagena 2009).2 Furthermore, the influence of Erasmus’s humanism—which ... • Lessons for Losing
    • Abstract: The terms language and vulnerability come together in many ways. There is the vulnerability of infants, who quickly perceive they are nonverbal beings in a verbal world and for whom acquiring language becomes the central focus of effort. There is the vulnerability of the dislocated—travelers, migrants, immigrants, refugees, deportees. As a geographic fact, the multiplicity of languages on the planet challenges those who move and those who receive them. As a social fact, that multiplicity endlessly generates dynamics of empowerment and disempowerment: state-based disenfranchisements of minority languages; gatekeeping that limits access to languages of power; war scenarios in which invader and invaded cannot ...
