  • Not Text but Texture: C.P. Cavafy's Poems Unread, Unfinished, Unwritten
    • Abstract: The poet's common tools are peculiarly—one might say, risking a mild paradox, emphatically—absent from Cavafy's verse. One looks in vain for erudite vocabulary, complex syntax, or convoluted imagery, which is why his early Greek audience, brought up on the grandiloquence of Palamas and Sikelianos (two of the national poets of Greece during the first half of the twentieth century), so often dismissed him as prosaic and cerebral. Yet Cavafy's singular power to induce his readers to feel the very moods he conjures in his poetry, to breathe directly the atmosphere he concocts, and to compel us to see in exquisite detail the images at which he no more than hints is as concrete as its sources still remain mysterious. ... • Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Twilight of the Republic of Venice: The
Church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Višnjeva, Montenegro
    • Abstract: In his 1884 publication, Secrets d'État de Venise, Vladimir Lamansky described the last century of the Republic of Venice as "Italo-slavo-grècque" ([1884] 1968, 552; see also Paladini 2003, 164), stressing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the Serenissima after the Ottoman-Venetian wars. In the field of the arts, this threefold cultural dialogue between the Italian, Greek, and Slavic element of the Republic can be observed in the decoration of Orthodox churches along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, especially in Dalmatia and in the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska). During the eighteenth century in particular, the presence of Slavic and Italian influences alongside the Greek in church decoration was becoming ... Read More

  • The "Peaceful Conquest" of Lake Kopaïs: Modern Water Management and
           Environment in Greece
    • Abstract: Until recent times, a natural body of water called Lake Kopaïs occupied a large part of the region of Boeotia in Central Greece (Figure 1). At its largest extent, Lake Kopaïs covered a surface area of 240,000–250,000 stremmas, or about 100 square miles, but the lake would recede in the dry season by as much as 100,000 stremmas—and even more during a drought—and leave behind a boggy, reed-covered wetland. Bronze Age occupants of the region drained the lake so they could cultivate the land beneath it, but when the drainage works were abandoned, the lake reformed and remained a fixture of the Boeotian landscape until the modern era. After Greece became an independent kingdom in the early nineteenth century, the ... Read More

  • "This Wonderful People": Darwin, the Victorians, and the Greeks
    • Abstract: In March 1860, at the end of a brief letter, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend and mentor Charles Lyell about an unexpected attack on the concept of evolutionary progress:By an odd chance (for I had not alluded even to subject) the Ladies attacked me this evening & threw the high state of old Græcians into my teeth, as an unanswerable difficulty; but by good chance I had my answer all pat & silenced them.2(Burkhardt and Smith 1993, 128–129)As Darwin explained in the letter, the subject of this friendly debate had come up in an earlier discussion with Lyell: did the ancient Greeks' "high state of Intellectual development" and humankind's "little or no subsequent improvement" constitute a challenge for the ... • SOE in Wartime Crete: An Instrument of Control
    • Abstract: The strategic purpose of British Special Operations Executive (SOE), established on 22 July 1940, was—in Churchill's famous phrase—to "set Europe ablaze" (Beevor 1981, 12; Foot 1984, 30; Stafford 2000, 12). More formally, its task was "to coordinate sabotage, subversion and secret propaganda against the enemy overseas" (Wilkinson and Astley 1993, 75). However, the historiography of SOE makes it plain that the process of establishing and developing this secret organization was one of Byzantine complexity, and it was riddled with interdepartmental and interpersonal feuds of a Machiavellian nature (Sweet-Escott 1965; Beevor 1981; Wilkinson and Astley 1993; Foot 1984; Mackenzie 2000; Stafford 2000; Williams 2003; ...            with Education and Assisted Reproductive Technology in Modern Greece
    • Abstract: Minorities indigenize and create their own cultural configurations of modernity within the world cultural order. These understandings of the modern, especially when elaborated by those at the margins of European nationstates, involve mobility processes that bring ideas of Europe and the West into minority spaces. Mobility is a polyvalent concept providing a useful framework for studying much more than just global migrations; it effects a certain kind of unification of differentiated forms of movement by creating a continuum, uniting symbolic and physical movement under the same conceptual rubric. In addition, mobility emphasizes the possibility of traversing the space between polar extremes, thus challenging ... Read More

(Anatoli. De l'Adriatique à la Caspienne: Territoires, politique,
sociétés ed. by Méropi Anastassiadou (review)
    • Abstract: This is a welcome volume in the growing field of cultural history and heritage studies, with new research on the politics of national states toward religious, linguistic, and ethnic minorities in Turkey and the Balkans. In this post-Ottoman world, state authorities have developed strategies to conceal and silence evidence of past history inconsistent with national ideologies—including the presence of autochthonous minorities, a reminder of a common past strongly anchored in the background of national territories. Contributors examine state policies against heritage claims and analyze the consequences of a major contradiction between the will to build modern, homogeneous nation-states and the cultural realities ...            πολιτικές στην Ελλάδα [Body, gender, sexuality: LGBTQ
politics in Greece] ed. by Anna Apostolelli and Alexandra Halkias (review)

    • Abstract: The condition of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer) people in Greece is currently at a crossroads. The rise of the Golden Dawn neofascist party has amounted to an increasing danger that LGBTQ individuals may experience with a rise in violent attacks against them. Simultaneously, recently passed legislation—such as the laws recognizing same-sex unions (2015) and streamlining gender identification in the issuing of public documents (2017)—is meant to safeguard some of the rights of LGBTQ people. In this context, a variety of LGBTQ organizations have been active, including Thessaloniki Pride, Athens Pride, the Colour Youth, OLKE (Ομοφυλοφιλική και Λεσβιακή Κοινότητα Ελλάδας, Homosexual and Lesbian ... • About Antiquities: Politics of Archaeology in the Ottoman Empire by Zeynep
           Çelik (review)
    • Abstract: In the past three decades, the history of archaeology has emerged as a distinct discipline attracting scholars from a wide range of specialties. The people who dig up the past, it seems, can be just as interesting as the material emerging from the ground. At times, however, this story-behind-the-excavation scholarship can be remarkably uncritical of the political and economic dynamics inevitably underlying the archaeological expeditions of the long nineteenth century, especially those that took place in the Middle East and North Africa. Inspired by postcolonial theory and heritage studies, numerous publications have sought to address the link between political ideology and archaeology. One work that particularly ... Read More

  • Counter-Diaspora: The Greek Second Generation Returns "Home." by Anastasia
           Christou and Russell King (review)
    • Abstract: In Cartographies of Diaspora: Contesting Identities, sociologist Avtar Brah comments on the complexity of "home," especially for diasporans: "Where is home' On the one hand, 'home' is a mythic place of desire in the diasporic imagination. In this sense it is a place of no return, even if it is possible to visit the geographical territory that is seen as the place of 'origin.' On the other hand, home is also the lived experience of a locality" (Brah 1996, 192). In their book on second-generation Greek-Americans and Greek-Germans who return "home" to Greece, Anastasia Christou and Russell King carefully navigate through this supposed impossibility of return, the lived experiences of a second generation that does not ... • "Give Me Athens to Stand on, and I Can Move the Art World": A Reading of
           documenta 14 in Athens, 8 April–16 July 2017
    • Abstract: documenta is a large-scale exhibition that since its inception in 1955 has documented, reconfigured, and reinterpreted the contemporary. In Spring 2017, it adopted Athens as a secondary home along with Kassel. documenta is a name invented for an exhibition that documents the present time and space, while at the same time making art and proposing ways of perceiving it. Its permanent home in Kassel was for decades a provincial city at the frontier of the Eastern Bloc. Over time, however, Kassel became the place where contemporary art found a suitable forum to challenge expectations and activate a range of new ways to perceive art. In its history, documenta has evoked viewer participation in multiple ways and has ... Read More

  • Xenocracy: State, Class, and Colonialism in the Ionian Islands,
           1815–1864 by Sakis Gekas (review)
    • Abstract: Sakis Gekas's Xenocracy is a significant contribution to the literature about British colonial rule in the Ionian Islands. The book makes an important contribution by focusing on the colonial administration through the Foucauldian lens of governmentality and by examining the emergence of a commercial, professional, and administrative bourgeoisie. The work is thoroughly researched, especially with regard to the records of the British colonial administration, and its economic focus makes it a unique and interesting companion to earlier works, such as Thomas Gallant's Experiencing Dominion (2002).The first chapter, "The First Greek State and the Origins of Colonial Governmentality," introduces the main themes ...            λογοτεχνία και στον κινηματογράφο του
           μοντερνισμού by Maria Oikonomou (review)
    • Abstract: In Maria Oikonomou's Κουπιά και φτερά, oars and wings are more than a titular reference to Dante's Ulysses; they are the central metonymic devices from which her study springs. Oars suggest the modern reader's attempt to navigate the protean slipperiness of myth and its meanings, while wings mark the lines of flight from early versions of the Odyssey. Using postmodern theories of intertextuality and semiotics, Oikonomou's book is one of few works that aims to influence the way we study the reception of classics. Indebted to Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, her rhizomatic approach structures the book into two definable segments: genealogies of Odyssean myth and their modernist remakings. Oikonomou's theoretical ... Read More

  • The Grecanici of Southern Italy: Governance, Violence, and Memory Politics
           by Stavroula Pipyrou (review)
    • Abstract: There are two small corners in Italy where indigenous Greek-speaking communities survive. One is located inland within the heel of Italy (Apulia), and the other, which is slightly smaller but better known, is found just beneath the toe in Calabria. Among a handful of villages there—a century ago there were as many as 12 but now there are 5 at best—live people known as the Grecanici, who still speak a local Greek dialect (Grecanica) and regard it as their mother tongue. As with their counterparts in Apulia, the people of the southern Aspromonte area appear to be a remnant of what centuries ago was a much larger Greek-speaking presence in Southern Italy. In The Grecanici of Southern Italy: Governance, Violence, and ... • Abstract: The importance of film as a medium for imparting knowledge and affect, thus contributing to or even creating a social memory of historical events, is widely acknowledged (Berger 2007). As films, museums, and the press shape the popular understanding of the past, the engagement of academia with such modes of transmission of historical knowledge becomes imperative. The four historical films reviewed here all make references to major events of twentiethcentury Greece, the memory and current understanding of those events, and their connections to today's Greece. For those who know little about Greek history, these films provide an introduction to three traumatic episodes with long-term repercussions: the 1922 Asia ... Read More

  • Re-Imagining the Past: Antiquity and Modern Greek Culture ed. by Dimitris
           Tziovas (review)
    • Abstract: This volume appears in the Classical Presences series, which has now published more than 75 titles in its 10 years of existence. The number of those volumes that centrally address the contemporary Greek reception of antiquity can be counted on one hand; those addressing the Italian relation to the ancient past on one finger. Modern Greece fares well by this accounting, but the series overall serves as a reminder that the views of those people who live in classical lands arouse limited global interest. From the international perspective on classical reception, the Greeks occupy a very particular political space that has given rise to distinctive, not to say parochial, concerns with the question of continuity. In ... Read More

  • Greece on Air: Engagements with Ancient Greece on BBC Radio, 1920s–1960s
           by Amanda Wrigley (review)
    • Abstract: This innovative new study in cultural history explores what its author identifies as the "creative engagements" (3) with Ancient Greek literature and thought on BBC Radio from the early 1920s to the 1960s. During this period, the BBC produced and aired a wide range of programs inspired by Greece (mostly) and Rome (less so); these included straightforward radio performances of Greek tragedy and comedy, as well as their modern adaptations, often commissioned specifically for the radio. The book's material also includes "creative re-workings" of nondramatic texts (3), such as the Homeric epics or the Socratic dialogues, individual talks or series of lectures forming part of the school curriculum or further education ...
