  • In Memoriam
    • Abstract: The JMGS editorial team grieves the loss of two remarkable colleagues who, as the stellar first two editors of the journal, established its high standard of excellence.William Hardy McNeill (October 31, 1917–July 12, 2016; JMGS Editor May 1983–October 1985) was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago and a prolific historian with an interest in exchanges between civilizations and an exceptionally broad geopolitical vision. When the MGSA launched the biannual JMGS in May 1983 as part of the organization’s larger project to establish a viable discipline of Modern Greek Studies in North America, Professor McNeill was chosen to serve as its first editor; he stepped down in 1985 to become the president of the ... • Some Debts Can Never Be Repaid: The Archaeo-politics of the Crisis
    • Abstract: As if we wanted yet another reminder, the recent avalanche of photographs and videos depicting the deliberate destruction of archaeological objects and sites in the Middle East, as well as the various attempts at virtual or actual reconstruction of these monuments in Western capitals, would not let us forget that antiquities are always entangled with politics, subjected to claims and counterclaims, and often projecting their own agency. Sadly in the case of the ISIS visuals, most commentators, with few exceptions, took them as documentary devices, while they were in fact carefully choreographed spectacles of destruction, ironically, by people who for religious reasons are supposed to despise images. These ... Read More

  • The Song of Songs in the Rhythms of George Seferis
    • Abstract: “Were it not for this obsession with certain rhythms of the Septuagint,” writes George Seferis (1966, 7) in the introduction to his 1960 translation of the Song of Songs (Άσμα Ασμάτων, Ásma Asmáton), “I am afraid I would still be wondering whether it is worth it to attempt this.”1 Constanze Güthenke (2005) and, more recently, Irene Loulakaki-Moore (2010) have concluded that a great part of these rhythms—at least in Seferis’s Modern Greek rendering of them—lies in words, syntagms, and images of the long Greek tradition: they echo the third-century BCE Idylls of Theocritus and can be easily and profitably related to the seventeenth-century CE romance idiom of Erotokritos, as well as integrated into Seferis’s own love ... • A British International Humanitarianism? Humanitarian Interventions in
           Eastern Europe (1875–1906)
    • Abstract: Humanitarianism … depends upon the general Weltanschauung of the promoter. The Turks are what circumstances have made them.International government, no less than national government, must have its fulcrum. In 1929, the German legal scholar Hermann Kantorowicz published The Spirit of British Policy and the Myth of the Encirclement of Germany. He presented himself as an intellectual belonging to “that species almost extinct in Central Europe, Homo anglophilus” (Kantorowicz 1931, 34). By offering an analysis of the inner workings of the English national psychology, the book ventured both to soften the increasingly belligerent attitude towards the continent in England and to counter the rising Anglophobia in Germany ... • Georgios Streit on Crete: International Law, Greece, and the Ottoman
           Empire
    • Abstract: The second half of the long nineteenth century witnessed a transformation of what we today call international law. While jus gentium or droit public européen had been conscious of its Euro-Christian character, during this period it increasingly became proud of its universality through its expansion to non-European countries. Non-Westerners were compelled to learn what the Europeans called international law if they wanted to remain independent. Consequently, in Japan and China, for example, international law textbooks, especially Henry Wheaton’s Elements of International Law (1836), had a profound impact on their state formations, as well as their ideological development (Sato 1996).The Ottoman Empire is one of the ...            Making of Refugee Identity in Interwar Greece
    • Abstract: The idea of Asia Minor is deeply embedded in the structure of Modern Greek identity for two main reasons. First, since the nineteenth century, the region had been celebrated in the Greek national narrative as part of the country’s imagined homogenous, national space. Second, it was the physical territory where hundreds of thousands of Greek-speaking Orthodox Christians had lived for centuries until they were forced to abandon their homeland in 1922. Consequently, Asia Minor occupied an important place in the Modern Greek national imagination.1 The forced population movement that was one result of the Greek-Turkish War (1919–1922), an event referred to in Greece as the Μεγάλη Καταστροφή (Great Catastrophe, hereafter ... • The Poetics of Meráki: Dialogue and Speech Genre in Kalymnian Song
    • Abstract: A moonless midnight in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The open kitchen window invites the salt-tinged scent of citrus trees in from the backyard, and the table is lurching under the weight of the wine jug and the seismic thump of stomping feet. Skévos peers at me over his glasses as he blows into his goatskin tsamboúna bagpipe with the aid of an air compressor that he’s rigged up with a long plastic tube (almost eighty, his lungs are starting to give out). He’s teaching me how to exchange impromptu mantinádhes, the fifteen-syllable rhyming couplets popular on his native island of Kálymnos. The melody he’s playing drags out the first few words of each line and repeats them, so I hear the phrases «Ήθελα να ’μουν μερακλής» ... • Skyros Carnival by Dick Blau et al. (review)
    • Abstract: For anthropologists, conveying the richness of our experiences in the field in text and image remains a perpetual challenge. The authors of Skyros Carnival have responded to this challenge by creating a kind of portable multimedia museum exhibit that engages the eyes and ears as it describes the engrossing festivities that take place each year during the three weeks before Lent on Skyros, an island in the Sporades chain. This annual celebration has been the most important event on the island for over a century; while many scholarly works have studied, recorded, and theorized about it, few have captured its intense sensory impact in quite the same way as this volume. The very layout of the book underscores the ... • Byzantine Matters by Averil Cameron (review)
    • Abstract: Weaving together history and historiography into a unified reflection on the state of Byzantine studies, Averil Cameron manages to stage the strengths, challenges, and possibilities of the field within the contexts of their Byzantine and modern origins. Given that a comprehensive historiography of Byzantine studies is yet to be written, Cameron’s method here is both methodologically useful and historically enlightening. Her narratives allow this intellectual lineage to not simply explain where the field has come from but to poignantly and suggestively nudge us into the future, indicating to us where the field might and at times must go. Of particular and notable merit is the book’s generosity to younger scholars ... Read More

  • Futures: Poetry of the Greek Crisis ed. by Theodoros Chiotis, and: Crisis:
Greek Poets on the Crisis ed. by Dinos Siotis (review)
    • Abstract: If you stopped following Greek poetry around 1980, now is a great time to catch up with it. Of all the arts, poetry has been identified as the most representative of the current national crisis. It constitutes the major cultural domain where the Greek emergency and/or exception are being negotiated. What makes things even more interesting is that a crisis of poetry preceded the “poetry of the Greek crisis” and ushered in the most exciting new generation of poets in half a century. The generations of the 1970s and 1980s were collective failures of form and force, but at least they produced a few excellent writers who continue to thrive, while that of the 1990s sank without trace, as poetry underwent a fundamental ... • The Edinburgh History of the Greeks, 1768 to 1913: The Long Nineteenth
Century by Thomas W. Gallant (review)
    • Abstract: The book under review here is part of a ten-volume series, of which Thomas Gallant is the editor, that aims to trace the history “of the Greek people from antiquity to the present” by “focusing on the history of a people, the Greeks, and not a place, Greece” (xi). As far as the modern period is concerned, this is a sound principle, for it offers a useful corrective against the idea, still prevalent in many accounts, that Modern Greek history is little more than the history of the places that eventually came to be included in the Greek state. Gallant’s volume covers the period from the late eighteenth century to the end of the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, “the long nineteenth century.”The author makes good on his ... Read More

  • The Edinburgh History of the Greeks, 1453 to 1768: The Ottoman Empire by
           Molly Greene (review)
    • Abstract: Following the recent publication in Greek of Petros Pizanias’s history of Greece from 1400 to 1821 (Pizanias 2014), the present work comes to provide a fresh historical account of a period generally unexplored by contemporary historians. As part of The Edinburgh History of the Greeks series, Molly Greene’s book aims to provide a history of the Greek people and not of Greece in geographical terms. It also takes into account the latest findings on the political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the period, employing the methodological tools of other disciplines apart from historiography. The result is intended to provide an innovative and exciting approach to the history of the period. In a study that ... Read More

  • Reframing Decadence: C. P. Cavafy’s Imaginary Portraits by Peter
           Jeffreys (review)
    • Abstract: The subtitle of Peter Jeffreys’s Reframing Decadence invokes Walter Pater’s Imaginary Portraits, first published in 1887 (Pater 1887). This is appropriate to Jeffreys’s argument for “Cavafy’s literary descent from the decadent tradition” (x). Jeffreys’s thesis is completely persuasive. Chapters on Cavafy’s translations of Baudelaire, his ekphrastic poems, his echoes of Pater, and his fascination with Byzantium in decline document in detail his deployment of Decadent styles and themes. Jeffreys is the author of Eastern Questions: Hellenism and Orientalism in the Writings of E.M. Forster and C.P. Cavafy and has edited two volumes of Cavafy’s extra-poetic writings, The Forster-Cavafy Letters and Selected Prose Works ... Read More

  • Modern Greece: What Everyone Needs to Know by Stathis N. Kalyvas (review)
    • Abstract: Stathis Kalyvas is the Arnold Wolfers Professor of Political Science at Yale University. He is also known to Greek audiences for his columns in Sunday papers. This book was published around the time of the electoral victory of SYRIZA (Συνασπισμός της Ριζοσπαστικής Αριστεράς, Coalition of Radical Left) in January 2015 and consequently only marginally addresses the rise of SYRIZA or its politics. The author’s treatment of Golden Dawn is equally superficial. The author describes his book as an “essay of historical interpretation” rather than a “comprehensive and detailed history book” (xi). The book attempts to show how the present crisis fits in the context of Modern Greek history. In seven brief chapters, it ... Read More

  • Inside Greek Terrorism by George Kassimeris (review)
    • Abstract: A recent imbroglio regarding whether or not to stage a play at the Greek National Theater that was partly based on the recollections of Savas Xiros is indicative of the everlasting explosiveness of the issue of terrorism in Greece. Xiros was a member of the leftist terrorist organization 17 November (17N) who was badly injured and arrested in the summer of 2002 after a bomb exploded prematurely in his hands. As an organization that was operational from late 1974 (right after the collapse of the Colonels’ dictatorship) and up to the early 2000s, 17N retains the capacity to polarize Greek public opinion, partly through its various afterlives. Its history, action, effects, and consequences, as well as the various ... Read More

  • Greek Urban Warriors: Resistance & Terrorism 1967–2014 by John Brady
           Kiesling (review)
    • Abstract: Left-wing terrorism in Greece was one of the most enduring in Western Europe. John Brady Kiesling offers a meticulous study of its emergence and decline between 1967 and 2014. He explores the activity of all left-wing terrorist groups that were active during those years. His comprehensive account includes the notorious 17N (Revolutionary Organization 17 November) and ELA (Επαναστατικός Λαϊκός Αγώνας, Revolutionary Popular Struggle) but also ones that were short-lived, such as LEP (Λαϊκή Επαναστατική Πρωτοβουλία, Revolutionary Popular Initiative).Kiesling analyzes the attacks of the terrorist groups in question, including arson or attacks against specific individuals. He also scrutinizes the ways in which those ... Read More

  • After Civil War: Division, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation in
Contemporary Europe ed. by Bill Kissane (review)
    • Abstract: Bill Kissane’s After Civil War: Division, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation in Contemporary Europe describes nine intrastate armed conflicts that took place from 1919 until the present, including those of Greece and Cyprus in addition to Bosnia, Finland, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Spain, and Turkey. The conflicts erupted in such distant areas ranging from the Mediterranean south to the Arctic north, and from the Atlantic to the eastern frontier of Turkey, which makes the collection of cases both geographically representative and politically diverse. Each article in this compendium covers a particular civil war. Based on the individual author’s extensive research in a given area, it examines whether the process of ... Read More

  • History, Time, and Economic Crisis in Central Greece by Daniel M. Knight
           (review)
    • Abstract: This account of local modes of understanding and explaining contemporary conditions of austerity and perpetual crisis after nearly three decades of prosperity is very timely. It is based on research in the town of Trikala, western Thessaly, Central Greece, and in surrounding smaller towns and villages; the town is a four-hour drive from Athens and three from Thessaloniki. It is an urban center that used to act as an important hub for the agricultural villages around it, many of which are now in decline. Daniel Knight first visited the town in 2003, carried out fieldwork for 18 months from November 2007 to April 2009 based in a village four kilometers outside of the town, and visited again in 2012. He has thus seen ... Read More

  • Educating across Cultures: Anatolia College in Turkey and Greece by
           William McGrew (review)
    • Abstract: Anatolia College, an American school founded in Merzifon, Turkey, in 1886 and relocated to Thessaloniki in 1924, is a highly privileged institution in many respects. One of them is the plethora of works written about it, mostly in English and almost exclusively by authors who were closely related to it. With the exception of a doctoral dissertation in Turkish (Alan 2002), the story and the history of Anatolia have been mainly written by its presidents or their spouses (White 1918, 1940; Compton 1986; Riggs 2007). William McGrew follows in this tradition. He served as president for 25 years and has stayed close to the school since retiring. Educating across Cultures was in the making for almost ten years and was ... Read More

  • Render unto the Sultan: Power, Authority, and the Greek Orthodox Church in
the Early Ottoman Centuries by Tom Papademetriou (review)
    • Abstract: Following his conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Fatih Mehmed had to decide what to do with the office of the patriarchate. According to the chronicler Kritovoulos, Mehmed chose a monk known as Scholarios, born Georgios Kourtesis, who took the patriarchal name of Gennadios II, and elevated him to that post in January 1454. Although Kritovoulos is the only contemporary source to mention Gennadios’s elevation to the patriarchate, historians both of the Orthodox Church and of the Ottoman Empire have accepted that the event occurred. What privileges and obligations came with that office, however, have been points of controversy at least since the sixteenth century, when Orthodox Church leaders in the Ottoman ... Read More

  • Militant around the Clock? Left-wing Youth Politics, Leisure, and
Sexuality in Post-Dictatorship Greece, 1974–1981 by Nikolaos
           Papadogiannis (review)
    • Abstract: The study of leisure brings to the fore the political dimensions of social relatedness; it also provides an alternative lens through which to analyze social and cultural transformations. Historical approaches to youth, on the other hand, question it as a reified and bounded notion and investigate the historical processes by which it emerged as a distinct category. Moreover, such studies stress that youth as a unified entity tends to conceal internal differences and variations stemming from cultural or social stratifications such as class. Nikolaos Papadogiannis’s Militant around the Clock? Left-wing Youth Politics, Leisure, and Sexuality in Post-Dictatorship Greece, 1974–1981 is embedded within the rich matrix of ... Read More

  • Dreaming and Historical Consciousness in Island Greece by Charles Stewart
           (review)
    • Abstract: New York, 1823. A farmer dreams of an angel directing him to a golden book holding the secrets of distant ancestors. An ancient text is discovered, and the Mormon Church is founded. A decade later, on a rocky outcrop on the Greek island of Naxos, poor farmers experience a series of dreams and visions in which the Panagía (Virgin Mary) urges them to dig for her icon. In 1836, several icons are unearthed, breathing life into a new cult of the Panagía. In the 1930s, there is a new bout of dreaming and prophesizing on Naxos. Dreams quickly become part of the local imaginary, setting people against the religious authorities, the state, and official history. Dreams produce histories, presents, futures (xvi). Throughout ...
