  • Introduction: Unveiling Domestic Work in Times of Crisis
    • Abstract: For female migrant domestic workers, past job dependencies, as well as new ones, make life outside of Greece and beyond the boundaries of private households undesirable or almost impossible. This tendency has persisted even in the current recession, which has led to an increase in unemployment, racism, and poverty, as well as to other forms of social hardship for these women. To understand their conditions of life one has to look at how domestic work shapes these women's perceptions and prospects for mobility in Greece.A number of scholars see a supposed opportunity for change in the socioeconomic crisis. They observe this change, on the one hand, in the fact that migrants now contemplate returning to their own ... Read More

  • Family Strategies, Work, and Welfare Policies toward Waged Domestic Labor
           in Twentieth-Century Greece
    • Abstract: This article focuses on the female domestic workers in order to explore how women experienced paid domestic labor and its gender and class dimensions, as well as the ways in which state authorities and the middle class addressed issues raised by this type of work. Our study examines one of the most concealed and invisible social groups, women domestic workers, and highlights the mechanisms that shaped and imposed the terms of their position as so-called silent subjects. Both the available demographic data and oral testimonies suggest that we are dealing with a rather sizeable labor force, consisting mainly of women and children.1 The origins of this group are essentially to be found in rural society and among the ... • The Social Setting of Female Migrant Domestic Workers
    • Abstract: There were two distinct historical phases in the development of the migrant domestic service worker in Greece. Each of them manifested different regimes of workplace control, and in each of them, the job itself was accorded a different status. According to earlier studies of domestic service, the first period, 1960–1980, introduced classifications and regulations for new workers.1 Essentially, domestic service in this period was part of a broader international system of work and welfare organization, or what is usually referred to in short as "Fordism," a mode of organization of work and employment structured around the fragmentation of jobs and tasks associated with mass production and consumption (Castles and ... • The Careers of Migrant Domestic Workers in Greece: Perceptions of

    • Abstract: In a period of economic crisis and rapid social change, the experiences, routines, and values associated with certain jobs and types of employment are important in shaping workers' career choices. The case of migrants—and in particular immigrants—who are employed in domestic work is one of the most interesting, especially if we take into account the fact that in the past these workers had already undergone similar experiences of sudden destabilization in their lives, which impacted their career paths.1In the context of the crisis, social and occupational status may lose their importance as work values and, in turn, may have specific practical implications, such as the inability to ensure a place to work or even a ... • Migrant Domestic Workers: Family, Community, and Crisis
    • Abstract: This study revisits, in the context of the ongoing Greek recession, the main sociological questions that were examined regarding the nature of migrant domestic work during the first decade of the twenty-first century. Looking at workers' primary and secondary solidarity, family, and community groups has always been of central concern to the analysis of domestic labor.1 This seemingly narrow focus on a specific aspect of domestic work is in no way coincidental or unintentional. For over a century, social scientists have been greatly concerned with the impact of laboring in domestic service on workers' families and communal organizations (Addams 1896; Du Bois [1899] 1995; Coser 1973; Chaplin 1978; Cock 1980; Glenn ... • Domestic Work and Welfare Values of Migrant Women in Modern Greece: The
Juncture of a Dual Process of Exclusion
    • Abstract: From its outset, the current recession in Greece has left no aspect of life in the country untouched. The crisis's consequences on the daily lives of workers but also on the rights associated with their employment are symptomatic of these broader structural changes in Greek society. Although these effects have been widespread, they can be seen perhaps most keenly in the realm of domestic work, especially in the context of women migrant workers. Examining how these women participate in and help shape the social values of the Greek state in crisis can provide insights that allow us to reflect on the broader consequences of the crisis and the recession in particular. This article looks at the lives of these domestic ... • Ancestral Return Migration and Second-Generation Greeks in Italy
    • Abstract: The study of return migration has received considerable attention in the academic literature. The first studies, published in the 1970s and 1980s, focused on the return of first-generation immigrants who had previous social ties with their country of origin and on immigration as an object of analysis (Braun 1970; Bovenkerk 1974; Cerase 1974; King 1978; Behrmann and Abate 1984; Thomas-Hope 1985). These studies tended to distinguish migrants whose return was part of the initial migration strategy from those who desired to settle permanently in the host country and then decided, or were forced, to return for economic, political, or social reasons. Other social scientific studies have shown that the main reasons for ... Read More

  • Norms, Vulnerabilities, Paradoxes: Greeks and MTV
    • Abstract: In December 2014, MTV released a promotional trailer of an upcoming reality show featuring Greek American youth and families in Tarpon Springs, Florida, prompting not only a wave of discussions but also a heated controversy. Organizations and grassroots initiatives criticized the show, entitled Growing Up Greek, for caricaturing the Greeks as undereducated, disorderly, and oversexed buffoons. There was outrage, taking the network to task for ethnic misrepresentation. In the ethnic media and in various commentaries, voices proclaimed that the cast did not deserve to call themselves Greek. But there appeared also a counterperspective, one of support, even if on a (perhaps) smaller scale. A sector of the Greek ... Read More

  • History—Past—Memory—Space—Body—Image: Artists' Performative
Interventions in the Refugee Houses on Alexandras Avenue, Athens
    • Abstract: Busy Alexandras Avenue, like many other areas in central Athens, demonstrates a tight succession of buildings that do not seem to conform to any easily graspable logic of urban planning. Walking west from the Ampelokipi metro stop, right after passing the small hospital of Agios Savvas, one encounters a series of almost identical, two-story social housing blocks. They are in a state of striking disrepair. The first block's half-dilapidated façade on Alexandras Avenue is out of place with its surroundings: the Panathinaikos football (soccer) stadium is just across the way; the massive, well-maintained buildings of the Police Headquarters and the Supreme Court on either side. These housing blocks, known as οι ... Read More

  • The British Intervention in Greece: The Battle of Athens, December 1944
    • Abstract: On Christmas Eve, 1944, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill crossed the streets of Athens in an armored car in order to participate in a conference that had been organized on his initiative. He was there because British troops, along with Greek government forces, had been conducting a counterinsurgency operation designed to defeat the communist-led forces of Ethniko Apeleftherotiko Metopo and its armed wing Ethniko Laiko Apeleftherotiko Strato (EAM-ELAS), and by so doing to stop a left-wing coup d'état attempt.Much has been written about the political aspects of the December events, and the role Britain played in them has been adequately analyzed, thanks in great part to the declassification of the National ... • Ideologues, Partisans, and Loyalists: Ministers and Policymaking in
Parliamentary Cabinets by Despina Alexiadou (review)
    • Abstract: This book is based on comparative research involving a large quantitative database. The latter involves the coding of data from eighteen Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries over a forty-year period. Greece, however, is one of three countries chosen for special investigation (alongside Ireland and The Netherlands). The book addresses two interrelated questions: do individual cabinet ministers make a difference in policy? Also, what determines ministerial appointments? Some ministers make a difference and others do not. The variation is to be explained according to what type of minister is appointed. The book categorizes individual ministers according to their party affiliation ... Read More

  • The impossible revolution: The social dynamics of civil war by Polymeris
           Voglis (review)
    • Abstract: In this extremely informative, well-documented, and compact study based on extensive bibliographical and archival research, Polymeris Voglis examines the Greek Civil War, 1946–1949, as a conflict that extends far beyond the limitations of its conventional periodization. He begins with a review of the prolific empirical and theoretical work about the Greek Civil War over the past 20 years, criticizing the new trends that stemmed from this explosion of academic and public interest in the Greek 1940s. Shaped primarily by the work of political scientists, such as Stathis Kalyvas, these trends have tended to deconstruct the (supposedly) dominant left-wing narrative by extensively discussing the violence of the Left from ...            and Representations. Vol. 2, Political Violence and the Balkan Wars. Vol.
3, The Young Turk Revolution and Ethnic Groups ed. by Dimitris
           Stamatopoulos (review)
    • Abstract: The University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki is emerging as an important powerhouse in Balkan Studies. Thanks to the energetic efforts of Dimitris Stamatopoulos, who organized three successful conferences in 2008, 2012, and 2016, we now have three volumes of deliberations, grouping some 37 contribution in three clusters (and three volumes): the growth of national movements in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, nationalism around the Young Turk Revolution, and aspects of the Balkan wars, specifically around the trope of violence. The three volumes are prefaced by a brief but perceptive, theoretically savvy introduction by Stamatopoulos, offering a characterization of the historiography produced in the Balkans ... • Heritage and Memory of War: Responses from Small Islands ed. by Gilly Carr
           and Keir Reeves (review)
    • Abstract: The editors of this interesting volume do not insist that islands are uniquely proficient in remembering the past, but as with other bounded geographies, islands can have considerable capacity for retaining information that might otherwise become forgotten over time. Islander memory traditions benefit from population continuity and physical isolation, which means these traditions are less susceptible to extraneous influences. In regard to wartime, these can have particular kinds of effects and leave distinctive legacies. The editors, Gilly Carr and Keir Reeves, claim that islanders can find it harder to dispose of, or recycle, war "debris" (4–7) by which they mean actual debris, infrastructure (for example, jetties ... • Suspended modernism: Technology, ideology of science, and politics in
interwar Greece (1922–1940) by Vasilis Boyiatzis (review)
    • Abstract: Using methodological tools from science and technology studies, along with modernity studies and the sociology of knowledge, and traversing the fields of political sciences, philosophy, sociology, and the history of ideas, this book is in dialogue with a wide array of questions and scholarly debates. The issues at hand relate to modernity and modernism, the interwar period, the reception and appropriation of technological progress and scientific ideals in Greece, the fusion of technology and science with political and ideological objectives and discursive formations, as well as the beliefs and ideas of influential individual figures (prominent politicians and intellectuals). The book's very title seems to be in ... Read More

  • Russia and the Making of Modern Greek Identity, 1821–1844 by Lucien
           J. Frary (review)
    • Abstract: How much do we know about Russian foreign policy and its agents in Greece in the period before and after the emergence of the post-Ottoman and postRevolution Greek state? As it turns out, very little before Lucien Frary's book, which reveals the machinations of Russian policy and its reactions to the establishment of an independent national, or rather, more accurately, an autocephalus Church of Greece. The importance of this development for the emergence of other national churches as a spur to Balkan nationalism has been emphasized in earlier publications. The role of Russia in the creation of a Church of Greece, however, had received little attention except from the point of view of the legitimacy it aimed to ... Read More

  • Camera Graeca: Photographs, Narratives, Materialities ed. by Philip
Carabott, Yannis Hamilakis, and Eleni Papargyriou (review)
    • Abstract: The 16 essays that comprise Camera Graeca originated in a conference, "Greek (Hi)stories through the Lens: Photographs, Photographers and their Testimonies," that took place in 2011 at the Centre for Hellenic Studies, King's College London. The editors' introduction lays out the broad parameters of the volume: "with a few notable exceptions … most work on the photography of and in Greece to date has avoided explicit theorization and reflection on its ontological, epistemological, and political work and impact. One of the aims of this volume is to fill this lacuna" (7). The scope of the essays, then, is admirably broad.Art historian John Tagg coined the useful plural term photographies to denote the many ways ... Read More

  • Counter-Diaspora: The Greek Second Generation Returns "Home" by Anastasia
           Christou and Russell King (review)
    • Abstract: Counter-Diaspora: The Greek Second Generation Returns "Home", by Anastasia Christou and Russell King, collects personal narratives about the relocation of Greek diaspora individuals—intended to be permanent—to their historical homeland. As the title indicates, the subject is the second generation's aspiration to start life anew in urban Greece. Based on a multisited ethnography (New York, Boston, Berlin, and Athens, as well as other cities in Greece) conducted between 2007 and 2008, this comparative study juxtaposes Greek American and Greek German life narratives. The book organizes itself around the notion of "homing," the "continuous process of transition from one's previous home towards one's ideal or future ... Read More

  • Rural Lives and Landscapes in Late Byzantium: Art, Archaeology, and
Ethnography by Sharon E.J. Gerstel (review)
    • Abstract: Decades of archaeological survey in the Eastern Mediterranean have ignited an interest in the study of rural landscapes and have resulted in numerous studies of village life by prehistorians, classical archaeologists, and ethnographers. Byzantium, however, is still often missing from such discussions. In her book, Rural Lives and Landscapes in Late Byzantium: Art, Archaeology, and Ethnography, Sharon Gerstel successfully reconstructs aspects of rural life in Late Byzantium and contributes to the diachronic study of village life in Greece.Gerstel's approach to the Byzantine village is inherently different from previous scholarship that focused on Byzantine villagers' economic activities and legal status. As the ... Read More

  • Mediterranean Diasporas: Politics and Ideas in the Long 19th Century ed.
by Maurizio Isabella and Konstantina Zanou (review)
    • Abstract: Mediterranean Diasporas is a great example of the value of collaborative efforts in presenting and analyzing themes that span across national historiographies, languages, and disciplinary categories. Maurizio Isabella and Konstantina Zanou, the editors of this volume, elected to focus their investigation on what they call diasporic intellectuals and, by so doing, succeeded in revealing a new perspective on Mediterranean history in the nineteenth century. The contributors in the volume problematize notions of nationality, imperial allegiances, and the nation state, often rejecting common understandings of the reception of Western ideas in the region. This volume breaks down the compartmentalization of national ... Read More
