  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: Mountain / Home presents new translations of Japanese works from the medieval period to the present. The volume opens with selections from "One Hundred Literary Views of Mount Fuji," a collection of Japanese writing showing the ways in which the mountain, more than any other national symbol, has represented the soul of the country. Sacred home of the gods and an emblem of romantic love in medieval Japan, the mountain becomes, in the Edo Period, a symbol of the transcience of all life. In the darkest years of the twentieth century, a dramatic change occurs when the image of Mount Fuji is manipulated to reinforce Japanese imperialism. The national self-image changes once again after World War Two, and despite the ... Read More

  • One Hundred Literary Views of Mount Fuji
    • Abstract: Through clouds and fog appearing, disappearing, one hundred views of Fuji.Mount Fuji has been celebrated by poets, novelists, and playwrights for almost 1,500 years, from Japan's earliest literary works to the present. In the anthology "One Hundred Literary Views of Mount Fuji," I have compiled and translated some of this important writing referring to Mount Fuji. The literature in which Mount Fuji appears includes Man'yōshū; The Tale of Genji; The Tales of Ise; Kokin Wakashū, Shinkokin Wakashū, and GosenWakashū; Tales of the Heike; poetry by Matsuo Basho, Kobayashi Issa, and the Imperial family; fiction by Natsume Soseki; Noh and Kabuki drama; and commentary and poetry by early foreign visitors—in the Momoyama and ... • The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
    • Abstract: The general led his troops back to the emperor and reported in detail to him that they had fought the heavenly beings but were not able to prevent them from taking Princess Kaguya to the moon. And then the general gave the emperor the elixir container with a letter from the Princess. The emperor opened the letter and, upon reading it, was filled with a deep sadness. He could partake of neither food nor musical entertainment. He summoned his senior advisors and asked them which mountain peak was closest to heaven. One person answered, "The mountain that is said to be in Suruga is close to the capital and supposed to be closest to heaven." Hearing this the emperor composed a poem:As I could not meet youI float in ... Read More

  • from The Confessions of Lady Nijo
    • Abstract: After several days we arrived at the Akasaka lodgings in Mino. I decided to stay at these lodgings because I was still unused to the difficulties of travel, which increased as I went along, making me feel sad and empty. There were two young sisters related to the owner who were pleasure girls. They played the biwa and the koto in such an elegant way that it made me feel as if I had returned to the past. At dinnertime I arranged for them to perform. The one, who looked as if she was the older of the two, seemed to be recalling an incident from the past, and tried to deflect her feelings in the playing of the biwa. But she could not, and her eyes filled with tears. I could not stop looking at her because I recognized ... Read More

  • A Tale of a Mount Fuji Cave
    • Abstract: Shogun Yoriie sent Wada no Heita Tanenaga to see what was in the cave. Deep inside, he was surrounded by young, pretty maidens who told him he could go no further and return alive. Then the shogun offered a reward of land to anyone who would go in. Nitta Tadatsune went, hoping to get the reward for his sons. Inside the cave he found a pond that had an island with a splendid palace on it. A huge snake appeared with sixteen horns and a long, red tongue and declared himself to be the Bodhisattva of Fuji Sengen. He asked Tadatsune for his two swords as an offering to relieve his suffering. The snake swallowed the two swords, and as a reward he offered to show the six worlds to Tadatsune. Then he changed his form into ... Read More

  • Sanshirō
    • Abstract: At Hamamatsu, Sanshiro and the other passenger began to eat from their lunch boxes. Even after they had finished eating, the train did not depart from the station. Looking out of the window, they saw four or five Westerners walking along the platform. In the group there was a couple holding hands even though it was hot. The woman was dressed in white from top to bottom and looked exquisite. Sanshiro had only ever seen five or six Westerners since he was born. Two had been high school teachers in Kumamoto, and another had been a hunchback. Of the women he had seen, one was a missionary. She had pointed features like a barracuda. • Yoshioka Minoru: A Life of Poetry
    • Abstract: Still Life and Monks, published in 1955 and 1958, respectively, contain the poems that launched the career of Yoshioka Minoru, one of Japan's most important and singular poets of the post–World War Two period. Still Life drew the attention and admiration of other poets of his generation, while Monks brought him a major prize for younger poets and the recognition of critics. Yoshioka went on to become the most influential poet of the avant-garde, embraced by countercultural circles in the 1960s, such as the Butoh dance group of Hijikata Tatsumi and figures in the underground theater such as Kara Jūrō and Terayama Shūji; virtually all of the major poets of the following generation were profoundly influenced by both ... • Ayukawa Nobuo: Poet of Arechi
    • Abstract: Ayukawa Nobuo (neé Uemura Ryuichi) was born in Tokyo in 1920. A leading poet in Japanese Sengo-shi, or "postwar poetry," he was one of the founding members of Arechi (Waste Land), a poetry group that was heavily influenced by European modernists, including T. S. Eliot, and that had a strong impact on the direction of Japanese poetry after World War Two.Ayukawa had first been drawn to Eliot after encountering "The Waste Land" when it was translated into Japanese in the 1930s. He had been captivated by Eliot's modernist language and radical use of imagery, and found that the sociopolitical environment of pre-fascist Europe and economically depressed England resonated for him, as it reflected the situation in his own ... • Three Linked Stories
    • Abstract: Late at night, around the time the dog, husband, and children were sleeping peacefully, Keiko touched up her makeup, getting ready to meet someone. She told no one about this, not because she needed to keep it a secret, but because there was no need to tell others. There was another world and she had been seeing people from that world, and it would be difficult for anyone to understand such an explanation.Keiko looked at her reflection in the mirror. Because she had applied her evening makeup, her face emitted a bewitching phosphorescence that seemed to confirm her transportation to the other world. When she felt the presence of someone outside, she got up and slipped out of the house. She passed through the walls ... Read More

  • Shining Genji
    • Abstract: In The Tale of Genji, the main character, known as Shining Genji, is no more than seventeen when, in the second chapter, he has a chance tryst with the young wife of the Deputy Governor of Iyo. Ostensibly horrified at his advances, she nonetheless yields to him, while tearfully insisting that the gulf in social rank (he is, after all, a son of the reigning emperor) renders impossible any enduring relationship. She then avoids further meetings by hiding herself away. Genji composes a verse likening her to the mythological broom tree (hahakigi) on the moors of Sonohara, which, on being approached, recedes into the distance. Nonetheless, undeterred, Genji pursues her, utilizing her younger brother—also his page—as his ... Read More

  • The Cicada Shell, from The Tale of Genji
    • Abstract: "Never before have I been so rebuffed!" his Lordship lamented, unable to sleep. "This night I have come to know the cruel nature of the world, and the humiliation is such that I wonder how I may endure."The tears shed by the boy lying beside him only added to his charm. Small and slender, with hair that was not so very long, he bore a poignant resemblance to that other figure his Lordship had held and caressed. Well aware that further pursuit would be most unseemly, his Lordship resigned himself to brooding away the nocturnal hours and sent the youth on no more errands. While it was still dark, he arose and departed, leaving the boy quite forlorn. The lady was not without her own bitter regrets, as there came from ... Read More

  • Villon's Woman
    • Abstract: I'm awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of the front door clattering open. I realize it's only my husband coming home drunk, however, and just lie here quietly in bed.He switches on the light in the next room, and I can hear him panting noisily as he rummages through the drawers of his desk and bookcase, searching for something. Then he plops down heavily on the tatami mats, and all I hear is his husky, rapid breathing. I wonder what he's up to."Welcome back. Did you eat dinner' There are rice balls in the cupboard.""Oh. Thank you," he says in a gentle tone I'm not accustomed to hearing from him. "How's the boy' Still got a fever'"This, too, is unusual. Our son will be four next year, but whether ... Read More

  • Sketches: A Man and His Home
    • Abstract: I must have been in my late teenage years when I first watched the Italian director Vittorio De Sica's moving film Il tetto (The Roof). The story takes place soon after World War Two in Rome. A poor, young couple gets married, but because they both live in small places with many other family members, they find themselves without any space of their own. They come up with a plan. They decide to construct an illegal residence in the vacant land next to the railway tracks—land that probably belongs to the government. Their friends and brothers hear about the plan and decide to pitch in. In the course of a single night, they build walls, hang a door, and construct a roof. The finished house (perhaps the word shack might ... Read More

  • Haiku
    • Abstract: 三界はやせ犬わしる天のがはsangai wa yaseinu washiru amanogawaDuring the late 1940s and early 1950s, Japan was living through the aftermath of war. The country was poor, and the stray dogs and cats were skinny. The ecosystem, however, was rich. We saw bats flying over the town at dusk, and weasels crossing the roads during the day. I particularly remember the beauty of the starry skies of autumn—I would stare in adoration at the shooting stars as I walked back from taking a bath at one of the public bathhouses. Later, the haiku poet Nagata Kōi (1900–1977) took a liking to this haiku and asked me to write it with a brush on a thin strip of paper, which he hung in his study in Suma, located in the city of Kobe. The expression ...
