  • Kritika Comes of Age! Twenty-One Years and Counting …
    • Abstract: We are on the eve of an important year for Kritika—just a few months from now, we turn 21. It is an important year, a coming of age, not to mention the legal drinking age in many parts of the United States. So, in the spirit of the moment, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on how we got here and express our gratitude to all of you who have helped us along the way.We should start by being precise: Kritika as a whole is not turning 21. It is the current edition of the journal that is having the birthday. Our predecessor, the original Kritika, was founded by Russian history graduate students at Harvard in 1964 as a forum for offering longer than conventional reviews of Soviet historical scholarship that tended to ... • From Mare Clausum to Mare Liberum: Black Sea Diplomacy in the Era of
           Russo-Ottoman Duopoly
    • Abstract: The central thesis of this article is that conventional historiography misrepresents the transformation of the Black Sea as an internationalization of a closed sea through great-power diplomacy (i.e., the "Eastern Question paradigm") and the incorporation of an isolated space through the conquest of European capitalism. The Black Sea has also not received due attention from global historians, who tend to reduce changes in the Black Sea region to the perennial question of the Straits as part of the Eastern Question and their inevitable incorporation into the world economy through Russian grain exports.1 Since the 1970s, historians have tended to avoid using the term "Eastern Question," considering it a Eurocentric ... • Yardstick of Friendship: Soviet-Turkish Relations and the Montreux
           Convention of 1936
    • Abstract: Beginning in 1920, bitterness against the postwar international order drove Soviet-Turkish relations. Nationalist Turks and internationalist Bolsheviks laid to rest four centuries of rivalry between their imperial predecessors as they found themselves in a convergence that each side defined as anti-imperialist. At the heart of their cooperation was a geopolitical alignment that sought to shield the greater Black Sea region from Western intrusions. Equally, both sides shared a commitment to the creation of modern states. This interwar exchange between Ankara and Moscow has aptly been called anti-Westernism on the European periphery; it was a meaningful partnership.1 All the way up to the final hours of peace in ... • Excavating Byzantium: Russia's Archaeologists and Translatio Imperii
    • Abstract: The Greeks of Constantinople … held in their lifeless hands the riches of their fathers, without inheriting the spirit which created and improved that sacred patrimony: they read, they praised, they compiled, but their languid souls seemed alike incapable of thought and action. In his six-volume tour de force of the downfall of what he clearly perceives to have been a remarkable imperial civilization, Edward Gibbon structured a historical paradigm that effectively separated West from East, much to the detriment of the latter. The most significant reason for the collapse of "the grandeur that was Rome," in Gibbon's accounting, was the rise of Christianity, with its intolerance for cosmopolitan pluralism. This ... Read More

  • The Russian Jesuit Myth
    • Abstract: In 1865, Iurii Samarin, a representative of the second generation of Slavophiles, wrote five open letters to the Jesuit father, Jean (Ivan) Martynov, a Russian convert to Catholicism. This series of letters, published first in Russian in the Slavophile journal Den´, then translated into French and published in Paris in 1867, formed the basis for the Russian Jesuit myth. Partly inspired by the French, and more generally European, Jesuit myth, it can be understood as a "message," a "language," a "narrative," a "legend," or even a "fiction that claimed to be true."1 It was the Russian version of one of the three influential modern European myths of conspiracy that formed during the long 19th century: those of the ... • The Enchantment of an Earlier Black Sea, 1768–1856
    • Abstract: The Black Sea's relevance for global geopolitics is hardly news in 2019. Important for European self-definition since ancient Greece, it represented the limit of Asia for Aeschylus and later separated a Christian Europe from the specter of Islam. Indeed, the globe itself is arguably the product of ripples that began on the Black Sea in the 15th century (1475), when the Ottomans shut down the last of the foreign (largely Genoese) trading colonies on the littoral and transformed what had been a "Genoese lake" into an Ottoman one. In so doing, they interrupted income from the Silk Road that had fed directly into the coffers of the Republic of Genoa and provoked a reorientation of Genoese commerce and finance toward ... • A Window to the South: The Russian Empire, the Black Sea, and Beyond
    • Abstract: For decades, Western historiography has critically addressed Vasilii Kliuchevskii's famous idea of Russia's expansion toward the Black Sea as the natural end of Russian colonial expansion. While the inclusion of southern Russian and Ukrainian territories into the empire undoubtedly marked a watershed in its history, the motifs and aims, as well as the process itself and its short- and long-term consequences, continue to offer ground for debate. The southern parts of the Russian Empire acquired between the late 17th and the early 19th centuries have stimulated research directly related to the character of the empire itself. Among them are issues of foreign policy, migration, various aspects of state building, and ... Read More

  • The Alienated Russian Nobility'
    • Abstract: Much writing about the pre-reform nobility is a search for solid ground. Russian nobles, it seems, somehow lacked substance. As Petr Chaadaev put it in 1829–30, they were "nomads" in their own country.1 To generations of Russians and Westerners in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were lackeys of despotism and imitators of foreign cultures.2 This conception shaped much of the scholarship of the second half of the 20th century. Marc Raeff wrote of the Westernized nobility's "rootlessness" and "lack of contact with both the Russian tradition and the Russian people."3 Iurii Lotman argued that "the Russian nobleman was like a foreigner in his own country": "To behave properly," he explained, "was to behave like a ... • Discovering Russian Regions: Fruits of the Archival Turn in Imperial
           Russian History
    • Abstract: The drama of the opening of the Soviet archives in the early 1990s is well known even among the general public; the transformative interventions of newly accessed documents are still avidly awaited as the field continues to work through that material even now. The historiography of imperial Russia was also affected by the limited access to archives of the Soviet period, yet the fuller exploration of those archives—especially provincial archives—since the early 1990s is rarely recognized as a fundamental driving force of historiographical change. Studies of the imperial period from the past three decades vary widely, but this diversity reflects archival richness as much as the political divergences and renewed ... Read More

  • Weaving a History of Russian Orthodoxy
    • Abstract: "Tapestry" is an apt metaphor for this long-awaited collection of essays so multicolored and textured in topic, scope (chronological and thematic), and style on Rus´/Russian Orthodox spirituality. Based on two conferences at Harvard (2002) and Yale (2003), the time lag in publication has not rendered obsolete the conclusions of any of the articles, which have been updated since their original presentation.1 Anyone interested in Rus´/Russian history or the history of Christianity would benefit from reading this anthology, which includes a preface by Jennifer B. Spock; "Introduction: Christianity East and West" by Nickolas Lupinin and Donald Ostrowski; a glossary for the entire volume (xxvii–xxxiii); a chronology ... Read More

  • "Laughter Is a Serious Matter"
    • Abstract: Making jokes was fatally dangerous in the USSR. Any expressions of free spirit—humor, satire, and even poetry—were taken deadly seriously by the Bolsheviks and Communists. The regime, with its distrust of the population and inherent tendency to politicize even innocent things, saw humor as a "weapon of class struggle." Respectively, "official" humor was directed against the revolution's enemies while popular political anecdotes were equated by the regime with anti-Soviet agitation: thousands were arrested under article 58-10 of the Criminal Code targeting anti-Soviet agitation, and Osip Mandel´shtam was killed for an epigram. The three books under review perfectly cover all these kinds of Soviet humor—both ... Read More

  • Conjuring the Bad Object in New Writing on Socialist Television
    • Abstract: Television is the love-to-hate medium. Or, in the more erudite formulation of the historian Michele Hilmes (by way of psychoanalytic theory), TV is the "bad object" of academe.1 Frustrating and alluring, ontological uncertainty rubs against its heels like a cat: what is TV, after all' Is it a text, a technology, an institution, a way of life' On a more practical level, too, the case against studying television history has always been unusually strong: depending on the context (era, country), researchers find themselves with either far too much TV programming to watch or too little; the form is too fleeting and trivial or, again depending on the context, too obvious and predictable, unworthy. Socialist television ... Read More
