  • Reflections on Russia and World History, and a Call for Papers
    • Abstract: "Global Russia" is one of the catch phrases of our times. To the Russian political establishment, the term and its analogues offer a shorthand for evoking Russia's growing reach in international politics. To European and US politicians and scholars, the meaning is similar, only darker. One of the research programs of the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, for example, bears the name "The Return of Global Russia," and all it takes is a moment on the endowment webpage to see that it clearly does not approve of the idea.1 Obviously, the real concern here, for the Carnegie and many other commentators in the United States and Europe, is not the rise of a global Russia but rather the possible ...            Historiography
    • Abstract: How do historians think' How do judges arrive at their decisions' What can a historical comparison between the methods of reasoning and substantiation in two contiguous disciplines contribute to our understanding of Russia's politics and culture' This article focuses on the use of evidence and the different ways of seeking truth and justice in historical studies and jurisprudence to reveal and explain the effects of legal and political governance on intellectual life and the processes of decision making. Instead of dealing with such visible and obvious frames and mechanisms of control as censorship and policing, the article analyzes more subtle methods, revealing the role of power in the creation of epistemic ... • Provisional Redemption and the Fate of Kaliningrad's Germans
    • Abstract: After the end of World War II, the Soviet Union annexed the northern third of the Baltic German province of East Prussia, along with its capital city, Königsberg, as the result of a series of wartime geopolitical negotiations between Stalin and the Western Allies. Königsberg and the surrounding territory were incorporated in 1946 into the RSFSR and were renamed Kaliningrad. The Soviet Union's newest territory, however, was populated almost exclusively by Germans—by ethnicity, by elective affinity, and by citizenship—over 150,000 of them at war's end, and they remained the majority until late 1946. These Germans' experience of Sovietization differed significantly from that of populations elsewhere in East Central ... Read More

  • The Fall of the Zariad´e: Monumentalism and Displacement in Late
           Stalinist Moscow
    • Abstract: The USSR Council of Ministers issued a decree in January 1947, calling for the construction of eight skyscrapers in Moscow. The decree listed heights and locations for each of the buildings. It assigned Soviet ministries and organizations to build each structure. And it set forth aesthetic parameters for design, stating that "the proportions and silhouettes of these buildings ... must be drawn from the historical character of the architecture of the city and from the silhouette of the future Palace of Soviets."1 Moscow's skyscrapers would ring around that future Palace of Soviets, serving one or more purposes specified in the decree: residential structure, office tower, or hotel.2 These buildings would also ... • Memory of Vorkuta: A Gulag Returnee's Attempts at Autobiography and Art
    • Abstract: After years of corresponding with the Vorkuta Museum-Exhibition Center following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Gulag returnee and artist Konstantin Petrovich Ivanov explained why he never wrote a memoir. In a letter to the museum from December 1996, Ivanov described himself as "derailed" from a life worthy of documenting:I don't need to write memoirs but a confession [pokaianie]. When I wrote you about my friends-comrades and, as you say, "in connection to them I mentioned my own affairs"—I could manage. ... But to write about myself ... that is already a pretension ... a claim to be someone [lichnost´]. But I am a nobody. I am the most ordinary-mediocrity. • Myriad Designs and Legacies of Regret: Alfred J. Rieber's Early Articles
    • Abstract: The corpus of Alfred Rieber's scholarly contributions ranges from the imperial to the Soviet period, encompassing institutional, social, and intellectual history, as well as the history of foreign policy, all replete with insights and challenging interpretations. This collection of articles shows the same breadth and expertise under the rubric The Imperial Russian Project: Autocratic Politics, Economic Development, and Social Fragmentation. The project's overarching goal is economic development. Rieber traces its uncertain fate from its inception with Peter the Great through the Petrine era and beyond, making his way through a formidable mass of materials to mark its successes and, more often, its failures in an ... • "New" Histories of the Russian Revolution'
    • Abstract: The recent centenary of the Russian Revolution presented an opportunity for public commemoration that was not fully grasped. In the Russian Federation, authorities were keenly aware of how discussion of revolution necessitates talk of regime change. As far as can be ascertained, popular attitudes toward the revolution are polarized along generational and, to a lesser extent, professional lines, with polling showing roughly equal numbers of people either positive, negative, or indifferent toward the main events of "Red October."1 The contrast with World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War, could scarcely be more marked. While one event is seen as potentially divisive, the other is a unitary ... Read More

  • Love and Other Legacies in Soviet Crime and Punishment
    • Abstract: Ever since I got into contact with you, I have been in a remarkably serene, tranquil, cheerful mood. I am more good-humored than I have ever been ... I pay absolutely no heed to all the surrounding trivialities and rubbish. Physically I now feel my condition is completely satisfactory: recently we had our latest quarterly medical inspection, and they found absolutely nothing wrong with my health (except for my heart, but whose heart is in good shape nowadays')Arsenii Formakov was most definitely lying. At least he was not telling the whole truth. When he finally got in touch with his wife, Anna, Formakov had been incarcerated for three and a half years. Most of this time he spent in the Kraslag labor camp in ... Read More

  • Ante-Mongol Rus´, Seen from the Top
    • Abstract: The clan-based, hierarchical, status-obsessed, conflict-ridden, and violence-prone nature of most medieval secular orders was such that chronicles, except when dealing with church matters and extraordinary natural phenomena, were almost exclusively interested in the tippy top of the ruling elite. This proceeded as if, in modern parlance, "politics" (who reigns where), "society" (elite births, deaths, marriages) and "sports" (challenges, skirmishes, standoffs, and wars) were all combined within one section of an annual newspaper. It is not, as any student of early Rus´ knows, that archaeology and numismatics have not provided rich data for economic history and plebeian life,1 nor that one cannot reasonably assay a ... • The Challenges of Sensory History
    • Abstract: We know how it works: historians concern themselves with empirical things; scholars in other disciplines—literature, visual culture—concern themselves with the more tenuous evidence provided by cultural texts. As such, historians have the stronger claim to knowing the lived past. So have our disciplinary distinctions long been articulated. Yet recent years have seen the intensive development of new kinds of histories: histories of the emotions and histories of the body, for instance, and (still more recently) even histories of the senses.1 What evidence can there possibly there be for such histories' How can the intuitive, often incommunicable, responses of bodies in the past be recuperated for scholarly ... • The Lives and Times of Leonid Brezhnev and Mikhail Gorbachev
    • Abstract: The biographical turn has finally hit the Soviet field full force. Certainly, Soviet historians started writing political biographies early on—with subjects such as Lenin and Stalin, who can blame them for taking on the task' Even without access to primary sources, books about the first Soviet leaders have always attracted large audiences, and, admittedly, the classical political biographies provided a timeline and an overview of main themes and topics that helped outline the state of the field. It was only in the 1990s, when research on diaries and letters, mostly driven by the subjectivity school, allowed for a different approach to evaluating individual lives in the Soviet Union. After decades of ... Read More

  • Late Soviet Memoirs
    • Abstract: In 1932, the recent University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate John Scott set off to the Soviet Union in search of work and the opportunity to contribute to something bigger—opportunities he felt were unavailable in the Depression-era United States. Fortified with newly acquired welding skills, he set off to a Soviet Union that, in the midst of the First Five-Year Plan, defied global economic trends. Scott was welcomed as a foreign specialist and assigned to help build the steel works in Magnitogorsk. He described his contributions to this iconic Soviet project in his memoirs Behind the Urals. Scott's early experiences reflect a kind of optimism with the Soviet project that became unimaginable after the early Soviet ... Read More
