  • My Life in Joyce Studies, Such as It Is
    • Abstract: Coming from someone who takes pride in writing clearly, that simple, seemingly comic add-on, “Such as It Is,” seems strangely ambiguous: Does it refer to “My [Academic] Life” or to the state of “Joyce Studies”? And why the ambiguity?I have never thought of myself as a Joycean. My professional interest in Joyce has almost from the start been his place among the Modernist Masters—the great age of the novel, as I (continue to) understand it—and in his role as a lodestar for the generations of novelists who have followed him. But from the very start, nearly half a century ago, Joyceans have insisted that I was indeed one of them. I feel honored by the label and also a bit limited.I first read Ulysses in an ... Read More

  • Textual Authority and Diagnostic Joyce: Re-Reading the Way We Read the
           Wake
    • Abstract: The publisher asks the reader’s indulgence for typographical errors unavoidable in the exceptional circumstances. The lines that open this essay are from the first edition of Joyce’s Ulysses, on an un-numbered page just before the main text begins. Any scholar of Ulysses knows how much of an understatement that sentence is, how great an “indulgence” the edition had asked Joyce’s readers, and how much that indulgence has been given, in the form of the now-standard Gabler edition. The line is an apology in both the modern sense of the term, in which one asks for forgiveness, and in the ancient Greek sense of apologia, in which one mounts a defense or offers an explanation (think here of that most un-apologetic of ... • Joyce’s “meanderthalltale”: Tracing the Passed/Past in
           Finnegans Wake
    • Abstract: Toward the end of the opening chapter of Finnegans Wake, the voice of an imagined eulogist warns HCE as “Mr Finnimore” (FW 24.16) about the dangers of waking. The speaker’s rationales relate to the perils of exploring the urban landscape: The dreamer would probably get lost, given changes in the roading; his feet would be endangered by the damp; unpleasant noises would disturb his hearing; and his vision would be assaulted by a sick bankrupt man and a fallen woman with an illegitimate child (see FW 24.17–24). This synaesthetic dystopia is part of a larger dream language of anxiety that closes I.1.1 The eulogist concludes, with questionable persuasiveness, that HCE is better off in a furnished structure that ... • Degeneration, Decadence, and Joyce’s Modernist Disability Aesthetics
    • Abstract: Shortly after the publication of James Joyce’s Anna Livia Plurabelle as a standalone volume in 1928, the Observer issued an unfavorable review by Gerald Gould. “It looks as if he had a spelling-bee in his bonnet, and had got confused by the buzz,” he complained.1 To Padraic Colum, whose preface to Anna Livia had praised Joyce as “an innovator of literary form,”2 Gould countered, “I doubt whether it is really an invention to burble, since all babies do it” (7). His summary response to this chapter on rivers and flowing waters was blunt: “The only water it all suggests to me,” he wrote, “is water on the brain” (7). Gould’s technique—discrediting Joyce by invoking disability—is dashed off with a lightness of touch ... Read More

  • Patriarchal Dissolution in Finnegans Wake: Reading Joyce’s
           “porterpeace”
    • Abstract: In 1898, Father James Cullen, S.J., formed the Pioneer Total Abstinence League of the Sacred Heart in Dublin. It was endorsed and supported through indulgences by Pius X in 1905.1 During the same period, the Intoxicating Liquors Act was passed in Ireland in July 1902. It reduced the number of pubs in the country, and introduced a 10:30 p.m. closing time. A bill banning Sunday opening was passed on November 29, 1906. “Drink,” as alcohol is known in the Emerald Isle, was under sustained attack from political and religious quarters. The attempt to restrict drinking was undertaken in tandem with a greater degree of church influence on Irish political administration in general. Thomas Hofheinz proposes to capture the ... Read More

  • Elegiac Ulysses
    • Abstract: What shall we call Ulysses? In a 1974 essay on “The Genre of Ulysses,” A. Walton Litz offered a short catalog of terms that scholars have applied to Joyce’s great experiment in fiction. “At one time or another,” Litz wrote, “Ulysses has been presented as a stark naturalistic drama, a symbolist poem, a comic epic in prose, even a conventional novel of character and situation.”1 Joyce himself, as he prepared his readers for an encounter, in the early 1920s, with a work with few obvious precedents, did somewhat better. He told his friend Carlo Linati that the book was an “epic of two races (Israel-Ireland),” a “cycle of the human body,” and “a kind of encyclopaedia.” It was also, he said, a “little story of a day.”2 ... • Real Time in Ulysses
    • Abstract: “Real Time in Ulysses” started as a way to organize more than two dozen of my illustrations for James Joyce’s Ulysses. The poster finally came together when the images were arranged along the watch dial, with the position of each scene corresponding to the time of day the action took place in the novel.Initially, I used The Timeline 12-hour Clock, shown on the upper left, but it presented difficulties with the overlapping of the images, making the chronological order of events difficult to follow. The Timeline 24-hour Clock solved this problem by clearly separating scenes among morning, day, and evening. The passage of time described in the book took on a concrete scale and even its own color scheme. Eighteen hours ... Read More

  • Epiphanic Ulysses: Joyce’s Trail of Breadcrumbs
    • Abstract: As he shepherds the unsteady Stephen Dedalus to the cabman’s shelter early in the “Eumaeus” episode of Ulysses, Leopold Bloom inhales “with internal satisfaction the smell of James Rourke’s city bakery” (U 16.55–56).1 Inspired by the “very palatable odour indeed of our daily bread,” he coins another of his many advertising slogans: “Bread, the staff of life, earn your bread, O tell me where is fancy bread, at Rourke’s the baker’s it is said” (16.56–59). The whiff of fancy bread certainly tickles Bloom’s appetite, and because the narration here is closely allied with his point of view, it also tickles his fancy, as the slogan puns on a song from The Merchant of Venice, beginning “Tell me where is fancy bred,/Or in ... • Bronze by Goldenhair: Music as Language in Chamber Music and
           “Sirens”
    • Abstract: To approach James Joyce’s Chamber Music properly equipped with the foreknowledge of what the future of his career would hold is to encounter not the cloacal fixation occasionally imposed on the poems,1 but nascent revelations about the nature of Joycean modernist style. First among these is an inventiveness in regard to the semiotics of music in literature. A collection of love poems published in 1907, Chamber Music examines the intersections of music and poetry, investigating the ways in which the written word can take on purely abstract qualities of music—an interest also explicitly pursued in the “Sirens” chapter of Ulysses. Comparing these early poems with Joyce’s famous, if contentious, fuga per canonem ... Read More

  • Speak, Suck, Bite … Kiss: Mother–Son Love in Joyce
    • Abstract: You must remember this: A kiss is just a kissWhat does it mean for a mother to kiss her child? Common sense would have us believe that a parent’s kiss is the most natural display of affection. And yet, in the child’s consciousness, is a kiss really just a kiss? Joyce poses these questions about mother-son love, and his vision is heavily influenced by Irish Catholicism. In Joyce’s work, parental love is complicated in the boy’s mind by the competition of religious feeling and prurience, as well as by the unconscious identifications and motivations of mother figures. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the young boy Stephen worries and deliberates over expressions of maternal love, particularly when his ... Read More

  • A Little Cloud of Queer Suspicion
    • Abstract: A number of the stories in Dubliners have what we might call “oblique” titles that, instead of pointing directly to an apparent principal character or an ostensible major theme, point away to seemingly secondary characters, subordinate themes, or minor—even incidental—narrative concerns.1 Consider, for example, the first and last stories. While “The Sisters” is primarily concerned with the young boy–protagonist’s processing of the death of a priest with whom he had a fairly intimate relationship, the title identifies the secondary figures of the priest’s two sisters, directing our attention to their sisterly part in upholding illusions concerning the dead priest/brother and to their eventual disillusionment. While ... Read More
