  • Editorial Note: Suffrage and Beyond: Celebrating Women's History
    • Abstract: 2020 is the centennial year of the granting of women's suffrage in the United States through state ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. Many diverse celebrations are planned to commemorate the anniversary, from museum exhibits and symposia to workshops and concerts. Indeed, as we write, local singers in Binghamton, New York already performed a concert called "Women of Note," featuring music composed by women and highlighting suffragist songs. The anniversary is a milestone of sorts. Suffrage was a cardinal aim of feminist mobilizations across the globe over the past two centuries, and the topic has spurred a vibrant yet increasingly critical historiography. With this issue, the JWH brings the insights of ... Read More

  • Introduction
    • Abstract: As the debate over ratification of the Susan B. Anthony Amendment to enfranchise American women intensified after the Great War, both suffragists and antisuffragists believed that a great deal was at stake. Suffrage proponents promised that, armed with the ballot, women would tackle the great social issues of the day and usher in a new era of progress and peace. Antisuffragists, by contrast, worried that suffrage would damage women's elevated moral stature and threaten the very stability of life in the home. Now, in 2020, historians have the opportunity to reconsider those predictions using a century's worth of evidence. A hundred years out, what difference did the Nineteenth Amendment make'The Nineteenth Amendment ... Read More

  • Radical Imaginings: The View from Atop a Slippery Slope
    • Abstract: What were they thinking' As we consider the impact of the Nineteenth Amendment, let us abandon for a moment what we call the wisdom of hindsight and ask what the earliest advocates of woman suffrage imagined would happen once women secured the vote. Most Americans decried the mere suggestion of women's political equality as a radical disruption of God's and nature's plan and warned that votes for women would set the nation on the road to ruin. But what did the first generation of suffragists—who did not, after all, live to see what the consequences of enfranchisement would be—believe woman suffrage would accomplish, and how shocked, pleased, or dismayed would they have been by the results'Declaring women's right to ... • The Nineteenth Amendment and Its Outcome for African American Women
    • Abstract: African American women were not promised inclusion in the Nineteenth Amendment. The ratification was achieved at a time when segregation and racial discrimination characterized American institutions. Although Black women had been woman suffrage advocates since the movement began in the post-Civil War years, their inclusion in the Nineteenth Amendment was not a given. This was a struggle that took considerable effort, primarily among African American women who set out to educate Black people about strategies for change. Nonetheless, like Black men a generation earlier, the majority of African American women—those living in the South—were disenfranchised, or lost the right to vote, soon after the amendment was ... • Women in Hawai'i and the Nineteenth Amendment
    • Abstract: On March 22, 1922, the Hawaiian Women's Republican Auxiliary Club held a rally in Honolulu. It was just three days prior to a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the untimely death of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole, the current territorial delegate to the US Congress. According to an article in The Woman Citizen, the public organ of the National League of Women Voters (NLWV),about five hundred women composed the audience, filling the hall to capacity. They were Hawaiian and part-Hawaiian, varying from pure dark brown types to fair mixtures with English, American or Chinese. . . . Tiny brown babies were there in the arms of mothers who wore lauhala hats, around whose rims were yellow ribbons bearing ... Read More

  • "Our Democracy and the American Indian": Citizenship, Sovereignty, and the
           Native Vote in the 1920s
    • Abstract: Two key events in suffrage history parallel important moments in Native history. In 1890, national suffrage organizations reunited to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) during the pinnacle of federal assimilation policies that aimed to destroy the cultural and political structures of Indigenous nations and to assimilate them into the citizenry of the United States. The year 1920 fell amid what is often called the nadir of Native history, characterized by poverty, disease, massive land dispossession, and little to no political power, all of which were the direct result of federal policies. These concurrent developments are rarely discussed in tandem, but some Indigenous feminists engaged ... Read More

  • More Than Double: African American Women and the Rise of a "Women's Vote"
    • Abstract: On a late October day in 1920, forty-seven-year-old homemaker Matilda Wheelock and three other African American women visited the Board of Elections in Phoebus, Virginia, to register to vote. Each filled out an application, signed it, and answered a question about the definition of "a republic." All four women registered without incident.Wheelock's experience was not typical for southern African American women in the first elections after the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified. The document that testifies to her success—a remarkable field report by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) investigator Addie Hunton—also details the obstructionism that many Black women encountered at ... • The Forgotten History of Japanese Women's History and the Rise of Women
and Gender History in the Academy
    • Abstract: While it is commonplace to think about women's history as a relatively recent development, in fact, Japanese men began writing histories of Japanese women shortly after the turn of the twentieth century. This article sketches the development of the history of women and gender in Japan and later the Anglophone West over the past approximately 130 years; it considers where the fields developed separately and where they converged.1 To a lesser extent, it also touches on some of the people who wrote this history. While individuals have been writing Japanese women's history for many decades, the field only became established within the academy starting in the 1970s.In an era when fields like global history have come ... • "A World of Concubines": Fissures in the Category of "Woman" in Republican
           China
    • Abstract: The formation of a Chinese republic in 1912 called the elite prerogative of polygyny (male family head with a wife and one or more concubines) into question.1 Historians attribute the shifting optics of concubinage in the Republican era to the global hegemony of Western norms of marriage and Western legal models, a situation that might be likened to Japan's Meiji era legal reforms. To gain European recognition of the modernity of Japanese law and overturn unequal treaties, the Meiji government determined that "civilization" disallowed polygynous domestic arrangements. Japan's erasure of concubines from household registries in 1882 and legal embrace of monogamy in 1898 articulated monogamy as a new modern value. If ... Read More

  • Humanitarianism and Child Refugee Sponsorship: The Spanish Civil War and
the Global Campaign of Esme Odgers
    • Abstract: In June 1937, during the height of the Spanish Civil War, Esme Odgers, a twenty-seven-year-old Australian communist from a coal mining family, wrote to Phil Thorne of the Spanish Relief Fund (SRF) from Puigcerda in northern Spain, on the border of the Pyrenees.1 Her task was urgent. As an active member of the Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain (PLAN) she reported how sixty-eight children had arrived safely from Madrid, out of danger from the war. The children, Odgers insisted, could not "go on living in a city where shells were bursting daily in the streets, where bombing planes were a constant menace, where food was scarce."2 The scenes of separating mothers and children were highly emotional but probably ... • Shaping Modern Girlhood
    • Abstract: In her important 1999 book, Ladies of Labor, Girls of Adventure: Working Women, Popular Culture, and Labor Politics at the Turn of the Twentieth Century, the historian Nan Enstad pushed scholars to recognize that the young women who took part in militant labor activism and strikes were also "movie-struck girls," joyfully flaunting their newest fashions.1 Clothing choices and cinematic fantasies that seemed frivolous, while certainly not intended to foment rebellion, actually played a part in encouraging young women to think of themselves as ladies, as worthy of the militant labor demands they made. Enstad's book challenged the prevailing idea that there had been two sets of young women—one that enjoyed the ... Read More

  • Capitalism with a Female Face
    • Abstract: The five books under review address important issues about white women, money, and power from the late seventeenth century to the late twentieth century in Great Britain, the British Americas, and the United States. Previous scholarship covers women's work in the home (paid and unpaid, productive and reproductive), the paid labor force, and women's charitable efforts, as well as women's activities as shopkeepers, artisans, and consumers.1 The authors being considered here, however, analyze women in additional financial arenas—investments (Froide and Robb); philanthropy and social change (Neuman and Johnson); and manufacturing (Sparks)— and they provide various lenses through which to examine capitalism and women. ... • Gender, Power, and Religion: Orientations of the Self in African America
           and the Black Diaspora
    • Abstract: In Black Women's Christian Activism, The Promise of Patriarchy, and Religion in the Kitchen, Betty Livingston Adams, Ula Yvette Taylor, and Elizabeth Pérez each explore, albeit in different ways, the role of religion in self-making and the relationship between religious self-understanding and critical engagement with racism, patriarchy, and socioeconomic marginalization. This triptych highlights a rising wave of work across scholarly fields that not only reveals the significant political work of women in seemingly mundane or unexpected spaces and places but also delves deeply into the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual lives of women who are actually far more than ordinary.1 The early twentieth-century suburb ...
